Baby, baby, baby, light my way....
One of the most amazing things about music is its ability to, for the lack of a better phrase, shift its tune. And how with the passage of time, it can take on a new meaning. Like in life, it can be something we used to despise, but then we slowly develop a love for over time. Or the exact opposite (which is something everyone is guilty of at some point. I will admit, I still have Len’s first album). Or it can be something that’s always been there, but then one day we notice how truly brilliant it is, and we wonder how we ever got through life without it. In this particular instance, I’m talking about the tenth track on U2′s Achtung Baby, “Ultraviolet (Light My Way).
Since seeing them live for the first time time in 2001, I’ve loved U2′s music. And while their 2000 “All That You Can’t Leave Behind” is what really opened my ears, mind and soul to them, I had always been familiar with their hits from the late 80s/90s, which of course pushed me to purchased the albums in their entirety for the deeper cuts, with Achtung Baby being one of them.  Looking back now, I can’t remember the day, the year, or anything specific about it, but I just know that one day, I was sitting somewhere (again, my memory is horrible), listening to Achtung Baby on my iPod, and while going through the “regular” tracks on the album (One, Mysterious Ways, Who’s Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses, The Fly, etc), at one point I remember just being ‘caught’ by a particular verse or chorus of a song that I had heard in the background of my listens so many times prior, but that never really gave much notice to. So I looked at the screen, and the song was “Ultraviolet (Light My Way)”. When the song was done, I played it again. And again. And again. I was in love. An old song had become new to me, in the most wonderful away that a piece of music can. Maybe it’s because it’s a song I never hear on the radio, or that it’s a hidden, beloved gem that only true U2 fans would know, but for me, it’s something that reminds me of how music, regardless of its age, can continue to inspire and make you discover a wonderful thing that you were never looking for in the first place. To this day, it’s one of my favorite songs ever, and for the particular fact that one day it made me realize that something I always took for granted as background noise could be something truly wonderful.

Been listening to the new John Mayer a lot recently, with a new favorite song with each listen. Today it’s “Rosie”. It has a “Heavier Things/Continuum” vibe, which is probably why I love it. Really diggin’ the bluesy licks and the horns.

Absolutely loving “Don’t Take The Money”, the new song from Bleachers. It just screams “80s John Hughes movies”.

8 years after hearing her music for the first time, I finally got to see Adele perform live this past Friday night in Philadelphia. Being one of the fortunate few to be able to purchase probably the hottest and most sought after tickets of the year, she did not disappoint. It was everything I hoped it would be. She was on point with her singing, and had such a rapport with the audience. She’s the type of person that you just want to hang out with. So funny, so engaging. A ordinary, everyday girl with an extraordinary, once-in-a-lifetime voice and talent. I will remember it always. Thanks Adele for a wonderful evening.

Current favorite song at the moment. (”Somebody Else” by The 1975). Love the 80s synth vibe going on. Love everything about it.

Happy 20th Birthday to one of my favorite albums ever. Can’t believe it came out 20 years ago. “Shadowboxer” is still one of the best songs ever.

“How could you just leave me standing/Alone in a world that’s so cold?”
I remember the first Prince song I heard was “Little Red Corvette”. But at the time, being probably around 3 years old, I didn’t know Prince was actually saying the words “little red corvette”. But I knew the sound was something special.  My older brother (a budding teenager at the time) was a fan of Prince, so I growing up with him, I heard a lot of Prince’s music over the next few years. 1999, When Doves Cry, I Would Die 4 U, Kiss. And MTV being everything it was back then, Prince was all over the TV too. His clothes, his sound, everything about him was different from everything else in music and culture at the time. I thought he was very weird. But you couldn’t help but want to sing along, or suddenly get the urge to dance a little, even if you weren’t the dancing type.
As I became a teenager/young adult myself, my growing love for music allowed me to listen to Prince with a whole new appreciate and awe of how talented he really was. I never realized what an amazing guitarist he had been. I discovered new songs by him that I grew to love immensely, and wondered how I had spent so many years having never heard them before. The song “Purple Rain” has since become one of my all-time favorite songs. Whenever it’s on the radio, I leave it on, regardless if it’s almost over or just beginning. I still had yet to see Prince live, but knowing that he was only in his fifties, and still touring, I believed it was just a matter of time. Sadly now, it will never come to pass. Yesterday, the world lost Prince, sadly and suddenly, at the age of 57. At the moment, the cause of death is unknown.
Like Michael Jackson before him, social media’s presence made word of Prince’s death spread fast and fierce. I myself, first learned of it on Twitter. At first, I thought it might be a hoax, but as more sources were reporting it, I knew it was true. Not soon after, online and live radio stations began playing countless Prince songs. For the rest of the day, work was put on the back burner for me, as I keep reading and refreshing, trying to learn more about what happened to this amazing artist, who was suddenly gone way too soon.
I was surprised at how upset I became when I learned that Prince had died. I didn’t have to leave work, or go to the bathroom to cry or anything like that. I just sat at my desk with a heavy heart, listening to Pierre Robert on WMMR relay updates about what was known about his death, was playing some of his classic hits. Maybe on a deeper level, Prince dying was just a more concrete reminder of the mortality that we all face, knowing that we all face our eventual passing. Hearing his songs now, while still giving us the secret urge to dance, are chilling reminders that the genius and love behind them is now gone. Probably none more so than “Let’s Go Crazy”, with it’s opening lines “ Dearly beloved, We are gathered here today To get through this thing called life.” His music, his very existence, I’m sure has probably helped countless people “get through life” in countless ways.
Thank you, Prince, for being you. Today, we are all doves crying, wishing you nothing but peace and happiness, and hope that you are laughing in the purple rain.

Rest In Peace.
