I think I want to write a Tumblr post about aac and it's history for aac awareness month. Aac is one of my special interests. I love to talk about it but I have a bad memory so I have to research a lot. To make sure I get everything correct.

I’ve seen some people respond to governments restricting trans affirming care for autistic people with statements like “autistic people have higher IQs” and “I’m autistic and I have a biology degree” and I’d just like to say that autistic trans people with low IQs and no degrees also deserve to medically transition should they choose to do so.

Ok so a lot of people who have been using TD Snap for awhile probably know this but I just discovered this and it’s probably helpful for others, you can add an undo/redo button! The way I did this is I changed the size of the speech bar by dragging it to the left and then moving the other buttons where I want then I added the button in edit mode!
This feature is so helpful when you are still developing a motor plan and press clear instead of delete, or when you clear then someone needs you to repeat yourself!
I am unable to provide an image description, sorry!

Howdy!
Can’t afford aac currently, but maybe someday. In the meantime, if anyone would like to help me pay off my iPad (i owe $240!) or would like to help me buy my aac app (it is $50), my PayPal is paypal.me/jaspy3
i use aac part time as a communication aid. Without it, i am only able to reliable communicate with my direct family and only about 70% of the time. This isn’t an emergency though! It’s just something that would be immensely helpful for me. Don’t worry, I’m okay without for now. It just would be really nice to have more independence and fewer meltdowns lol.
I can do drawings in exchange if anyone is able to help out! send a dm or message and I can show you art examples. i mostly draw animals and anthro characters.
If you have any questions, please reach out. Thanks for reading! Please share if you can <3 (heart emoticon)

I’ve calmed down some but I need an aac device
That was my form of communication at times like this where all it does is anger me and get me overstimulated.
It was my form of communication when I regressed and loss all other ways to communicate my problems and feelings.
It made me…me
And it sucks that I lost that.
I shouldn’t have to fight so hard to have a voice. To be able to communicate in a way that helps me. No one should have to fight for that. If they say they need aac, they should be given (or helped) get that aac. It can be a speech generated device or PECS Board or sign language. It can be a white board or paper. They should be give that. It’s a right.
Don’t stop someone from having a voice because it’s not the type you want them to have. Let them communicate!

howdy friends!
amongst other things, it is AAC awareness month! if you would like to, please reblog or comment how you use AAC to communicate. this can be high tech or low tech, full time or part time. even sign language if you want!
here's a short definition of AAC:
AAC stands for augmentative alternative communication. it can include any method of communication that replaces or adds to verbal speech.
from Wikipedia: AAC is used by those with a wide range of speech and language impairments, including congenital impairments such as cerebral palsy, intellectual impairment and autism, and acquired conditions such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and Parkinson's disease. AAC can be a permanent addition to a person's communication or a temporary aid.
if you have any questions about aac, feel free to ask me! i can either answer from what i know, or do my best to help you find the information online.
i'll go first:
i am able to speak sometimes and often use verbal speech with my family. when i can't, i usually text them. i also use high and low tech aac. i use AAC when im out of the house and need to talk to someone who can't understand me or when i can't speak at all.
my low tech aac includes communication cards with simple words and phrases.
my current high tech aac is an iPad with the app TD Snap. i am using the free trial, but i hope to save up the $50 to buy it! i use AAC to have conversations, to talk to myself, to order food, and to ask for help.
what is your experience with aac?

One thing I urge adults to unlearn is the stigma surrounding forgetfulness.
Perfect memory retention is rare. A faulty memory can be the result a host of mental illnesses, from ADHD to PTSD. It's not a sign that someone wasn't listening. I have a friend that has a four year gap in her memory due to trauma. I have another with poor short term memory retention because that's one of their autism symptoms.
Your brain can also trick you into misremembering things. I can't tell you how many times I've remembered putting my keys somewhere and unearthed them in a completely different place. I have to remind myself what my birth date is because I said it wrong once and now the wrong date is in my memory forever. I have to come up with mnemonics for birthdays, anniversaries, and events because my brain doesn't do numbers for some reason.
I see people bicker about forgetting a person's favorite food or what their mothers favorite color. I think it's important to forgive people who forget easily.

cannot emphasize enough
intellectually disabled people do often have strabismus, autism, and whatever the fuck else you're throwing them under the bus to make the ableds like you better for
intellectual disability is commonly comorbid with many disabilities, both physical and neurodevelopmental, to the point that it is considered a sign of them
you are not a better, more valuable disabled person than intellectually disabled people with the same disability as you
and someone assuming you're id is not a fucking insult to you

Important: If a person on Tumblr says that somebody else writes your posts for you, and wants you to prove that you write everything on your own:
Don't respond. Don't upload a video of you typing or using your AAC device. Block that person, or ask someone to block them for you.
They won't listen to you and you can't convince them. They're just mean. It's spam. Really, just ignore them.
Here's a long post I wrote about that today, in case you're curious:

I wish I lived in a world where there was AAC users everywhere. In tv shows, in movies, in books, in all sorts of jobs, in any creative space you can imagine. I'm tired of always being the first AAC user anyone has seen (unless I'm in disability services).

i got my new iPad yesterday!!
i am doing the free trial of td snap aac app. i already know im going to buy it. it's great. i am already liking it better than coughdrop even though i used coughdrop for years.
im using the motor planning page set. it's really easy to use. i also like the keyboard. i am also trying out the core first page set. it's hard to decide which i like more.
i am still working on editing and customizing, but so far it is pretty good.
this app is a lot less expensive than other apps like this. im very happy. and very excited to try it out talking to people.
