Epilogue:
"Bloody googles" he said on the phone and Miller could listen how he toss them aside "this is a nightmare Miller"
"Are you at home sir?" She asked simply. It had became a ritual for she, Derek and Hardford to make sure he was at home safe at sound, however annoying it may be for him.
It have been 2 months since he finally got his surgery, that was back in December and after the four days he spent at the hospital recovering from the operation, being constantly pampered and taken care of by them, he went back to work to much of Miller concerned, although Miller suspect his main improvement came after he received an special bouquet of flowers and a card from overseas that he didn't show to anyone.
Then it began the new year, and all the challenges that came for the virus made her anxious about his wellbeing, along with Elaine and even Brian, so the moment they could send him home to quarantine with pay they did, so he was back at his place angry out of his mind, but she was sure this time he would get some proper rest.
"Yes I'm home" Alec said and closed the door of his car "Are you sure we can't talk to Elaine again?"
"Good night sir" Miller said repressing a little laugh and hanged the phone.
Alec walk back to his house, angry but when he opened his door he couldn't help a smile to form in his face to the smell of a homemade dinner... then he remembered he was alone at home, and he run to the kitchen with his heart pounding and hoping, just hoping.
She was there, the way he always hope she will be one day, the smell and Miller desperately making him go home early made him know he was not dreaming, he wanted to scream because he was happy, and ask a lot of questions because he was confused but he went silent, at the moment he most needed to say something he just couldn't. He needed to take in a lot of things.
"Are you alright?" She said with concern, she had a haircut, she looked healthy way healthier than before, no dark circles under her eyes and definitely not emptiness nor pain in them "Oh dear God sit!" She said as desperate as always and approach him and took out a chair for him. "I'm sorry, I knew I should have told you, I haven't sent you a letter in a while because there was a lot going on at work, and in the end the school closed so I thought that maybe I could came back"
She was speaking fast, she went back to his pantry once she was sitting and took a couple of mugs to pour some tea, yes they had kept a small correspondence, but he never said enough about how much he missed her since he didn't want to influence in her decisions.
"So I came back, but DC... no DS Harford now, she was promoted, that's wonderful she may be your boss by the end of the year" she said and he bent his head now only enjoyin her ramble "Sorry, yes DS Harford said people coming from out of the country had to be fourteen days isolated in the Trader's, she wanted to tell everyone but I asked her to keep the secret because I will have to be isolated anyway, so naturally she told Miller, and she and Beth sent food for me, not to complain about Becca but she must fire his chef, and well yesterday I made it to fourteen so I came back here, and Ellie said you were leaving to work from home so I thought maybe I could stay here... could you say something please?" She said finally.
He stand of his chair and walk towards her, and before she could react he just kissed her, he would like to say it was a gentle romantic kiss, but it wasn't well maybe first, but it soon became an imploring, hungry and desperate kiss, and she gladly reciprocated his need, she throw her arms around his neck and hold on to him for dear life, she needed him more than air, the moment she step out of Broadchurch she wanted to came back, and even when she was happy in every place she went she still needed him.
The separate after what seem too little, cursing their human need for air. And she was smiling, a smile he haven't see before but that he loved the moment it appeared.
"You still haven't say anything" she said and he realized how wonderful happiness looked on her face.
"What did you make for dinner?" He asked simply and took her by the waist to kiss her again. But he changed his mind and just hold her, tight and firm the way she loved, the way she had missed so much, this time he didn't say anything, he didn't have to.
They will have time to talk, about how she learned French cook, and how he learned to drink fresh coffee every morning, and maybe in an hour after he overcame his embarrassment and take her to his bedroom he will comment on how beautiful the outline of Broadchurch looked tattooed on her side, maybe she would make a comment about his chest scar and how proud she was that he finally had it done.
And maybe in the morning when she will be locked inside his arms she would say that the house looks more like a home now... that the plants looked healthy and that the fridge was finally full... they will have time to talk about everything, the good, the bad, even the sad parts. They will have to stay at home a while after all, but now, at this very moment all they wanted to do hold on to the other, she had accidentally said she loved him in a card and a letter after his surgery, and she wanted to say it properly, but that was not necessary now because he was there, holding her, and at that very moment with the sun hiding everything was fine.
The end

Chapter 22: Handkerchief
"Jonathan Norbury arrived at Broadchurch five years ago, to open an electronic shop owned by his father, replacing a mildly successful motorcycle shop" The lawyer had put an unbelieving emphasis in the word successful, you asume it was on purpose to get a reaction from the man being question, and sitting two meters away from Jonathan you knew she was successful in railing him up "He had, by his own account" She pointed at the speaker where they had played one more time his voicemail to Ashley "An unpleasant experience with woman in a bar that inspire him to go to AA, and therefore had a religious awakening that result in meeting Y/N, Y/L/N" you start crushing a napkin you had in your hand, and DS Miller must have seen how nervous you were because she hold on your hand in hers and gave you a little squeeze, "That woman he meet turn out to be your sister, is that correct Mr. Langford" she addressed the man who was completely bsorbed by his own hands.
It had been almost five months since they pull a very wrecked Ashley away from you, five months of endless paperwork, four since you were actually free to walk without a police officer escorting you, and only one since the actual system to punish those responsible for Jonathan was in motion. They even have someone of his first AA group who testified about the drunk girl story, and you suspect it was because of Paul that he came forward, and you were glad to at least still having him.
"Yes" he responded completely uninterested
"Does Jonathan Norbury had any further contacts with your sister after that?" She asked trying to not loose her patience with him and with his attitude.
"No"
"Excellent. Then after he meet mis Y/L/N and start an amorous relationship with her and make your acquaintance did you or your sister ever brought this incident back?" You wanted to look up but somehow your eyes felt glued to your feet. "Or maybe when he proposed to mis Y/L/N after all you were friends since ypur early childhood, surely the dubious past of his partner was something important to discuss with her"
"No, we ... I didn't mention it" he said and you pull all of your strength in looking up, fearful of throwing up when you met his eyes, but you only saw that odd little boy always on the shadow of his parents, and even after all he had done you felt sorry for him, he met your gaze and look aside immediately with something almost as remorse in them "We knew his father threatened him with with stopping his allowance if he stayed with Y/N, and well I hope that if he actually left the store I could bought it back, that's why I asked him to my place to drink a few beers when he and Ash started sha... I mean a relationship" it was like a tap opening, once he started he was unstoppable, and his own attorney was so aware of it that he just kept looking at his phone.
"Ashley ... she began an affair with him, she had worked with Y/N older doctor before, I never really knew how she knew him, but she gave her ruffies so she could sneak out with him."
"So when did you start taking advantage of Miss Y/L/N" the tap was closed. And you held his look, this time you would definitely throw up, but you felt a tingle in the back of your neck, he was looking at you, he didn't think less of you, he had said it over and over again while you were questioned for those exact circumstances, but now his intense look on the back of your head make you believe it.
"I ..." he went silent for almost a whole minute and you thought that maybe he wouldn't answer "After a month or so of their affair, Jonathan asked me to look after her because he was never truly okay with her being drugged... I didn't planned it, but I have loved Y/N since the first moment I saw her, I know that what I did was wrong, but it was the only way she would be mine, I never hurt her..."
"Do you realize that you took advantage of a drugged, mentally ill woman? I'm sorry but I fail to see how just not hitting her or pointing a gun at her is not hurting her"
It seems like his lawyer was about to comment on something but a quick look at the dead glare of the judge made him realize he shouldn't.
"Why did you record her?"
"It was all for me, the editing and the voice came after, when Ashley... she said it would make Y/N look guiltier..."
"Please do continue, what where you expecting to get with all of this?"
"The plan was" Charles had said almost relieved of the change of subject, "Well it was my idea more or less... to pretend Jonathan had an accident on his way to london the day he disappeared, so they collected some of his blood in the week prior to set the scene, Ashley volunteered at a hospital at some point before Uni so she knew how... but he well he found out about me and Y/N and he dump Ashley he was really mad at us" he said, almost like he wouldn't understand why he was so angry with them.
Ashley was useless past that point in her questioning, she seemed incapable of accepting that Jonathan had in fact broken up their affair, that's why she was not at court that day, but at that point Charles seemed completely over with the whole situation and began confessing everything.
"Jonathan had sex with Ashley before she went out with Y/N, I guess he knew she will act ou so he tried to keep her happy for as long as possible... so she would not be suspicious about him. Then he went back to Y/N place to try to explain everything to her, but she was still at work, he call her to break up with her but she stop answering so he left that voicemail, but she ignored him, that's why he tried to stop her from hurting Y/N again... Ashley sent me to stop him from telling the truth, I made him write the letter leaving Y/N... I wasn't completely sober at the time, he had told me that night he saw us that he was leaving with her and I didn't want him to take her away from me, so I took him to his shop... he was very desperate he even tried to convince me to let him go, he said he will give me the shop back..." He said and the knot in your stomach became tighter, the air was no longer filling your lungs "I didn't mean to, but he start saying thos awful things about me... I just... when I realized how hard I was holding his neck he was no longer moving, I tried to give him CPR but it didn't work..."
"Miss Y/L/N you can't leave the room!" you heard your attorney scream far away but you needed air and a bathroom, fortunately there was one very close, you wonder how common would vomiting would be for that to happen, but you couldn't think it trough because another round of retches made you empty the nice breakfast Beth had gave you that morning, after insisting in going to your place at dawn to help you get ready.
When you look up ther was a white handkerchief ready for you, he had followed you with quick and silent steps and was now there doing those perfect little things that certainly made your life easier.
"Thank you" you said embarrassed, and you felt glad that you were embarrassed because you had vomited and not for all the other things.
"Are you okay?... I mean you're obviously not, but I..."
"I'm better now DI Hardy, truly" you said walking towards the sink and opening the faucet to wash your hands "I have read his confession but somehow listening to him made it real... I don't know, I'm being stupid"
"You are not, this would be hard hard for anyone, I have been wanting to punch that bastard for the past thirty minutes" he said and he gave you that almost smile he had, and once again you thought that he may finally kiss you, like he had been doing for the past four months, not like the bathroom in a courtroom was the most romantic of places, but you have wanted that. Again that part of you that just wanted to leave it all behind, that part that desperately wanted peace, that part that hold on to his words on that cell it's only you...
"DI Hardy this is the ladies bathroom!, come out at once, they are waiting" Beth Latimer said opening the door and pulling you out, it was for the best truly, any possible future with him must be at pause until this whole thing would be over, and you were glad to see the annoyance in his face, maybe this time he also wanted something else to happen.
"Are you able to continue miss Y/L/N?"
"Yes, I'm so sorry for the interruption" you said and took your sit.
"Fine, what does miss Langford did after you told him about mister Norbury decease?" She paus as of waiting for you to exit again, but you just shrugged.
"She blamed Y/N for his death, she said she had to pay for it, so she asked me to move the body to her place and she cut him, she put the blood on the floor and the letter she drive to Y/N school and gave her a small dose so she would be conscious but disoriented and left her at the bus stop, when she get home she saw me, she tried to help him, she punched me, and I did what Ashley told me, I gave her the letter and put her ring in one pocket and gave her the bracelet, Ashley said it was important to gave it to her."
You realize the tears in your eyes but this time you could only look at him, there was no room in your heart for anger or hate, there was only pain, even when you could imagine a happier life and a future the pain will be there, for evere and for ever, because you loved Ashley as part of your family, even when she hated you, and you loved Jonathan, his eyes, his bad jokes, even his darkest demons he thought he should hide from you, you loved him more after knowing about them, because it was all part of him and of his heart, his beautiful heart that was no longer with you.
In the end even when they were locked away for ever you would never be happy about it, because losing them would not make you happy, you would never have him next to you in the morning, or a tea with her in the afternoon, and you realized she had won in one thing, she had tarnished all your memories, and you will have to live with that for ever, she took everything from you, even her.
****
"So what about the lipstick, the sex toys, and all the other evidence presented here??" Derek asked looking at the pile of evidence that seem to delivery lead to nowhere. "Was all of this useful in the end??"
"Yes and no." Miller said offering a cup of tea "Langford wanted Y/N to look more guilty making the case apparently hard to make her look less like a victim" so she make everything more complicated than it had to be."
"Well at least it was impossible to exonerate her from Norbury's murder" Harford said putting down the Echo of that morning, the trial had been long and emotional but with good results at least for them as law enforcement. "But I still can't believe they have to wait that long for sentence them for the murder of Y/N parents"
"All on his time I guess" Derek said and took a biscuit from the tray Miller had "The teacher is leaving town after all isn't it?"
"Yeah, Alec... DI Hardy is leaving her at the station, is the best for her I guess" Miller said maybe a bit disappointed since her life had been almost perfect for the past half of the year, after a couple days at he hospital she and Brian have been happy and at peace, she even took a couple days off to go to Scotland with her kids.
She wish the same for him, however she agreed that Y/N was not ready for another relationship so soon, she just hope Hardy would be fine on his own.
***
"You have everything dear?" Beth asked for the twelfth time
"I do Beth, passport, clean clothes, money, everything"
"Fine" she said more sad than angry "You really don't have to go that far to teach, just go to the next city I'm sure the don't know your name."
"I'm pretty sure they do, but hey I will call when I get to London and again when I land in France, I promise" Beth gave her one last hug goodbye and let Paul talk to her.
"Don't" Y/N said before he could start, "None of this, of any of this is your fault, thank you for being by my side, thank you for being in my life. I love you Paul"
"I truly love you too, there is nice congregation in the town you'll be working, I email the reverend and he will look after you" he said happy.
"Thanks dad" she said, but she was way to move to make another snarky remark. "Beth help me with her luggage" he said to left room for her and Hardy to have a proper goodbye.
"Are you planning on kissing me Detective?" She asked out of the blue, just the kind of question and attitude that he had learned to love.
"I..." he thought about not responding but he was sure this may be his only chance and the other were thankfully far apart. "I was thinking about doing it, but now I won't" he said happy to make her blink perplex.
"Well you should rethink that since I'm leaving for a whole semester, maybe I'll found a handsome French village boy and I don't come back" she said playing along.
"That may be good for you" he said killing the joke. "Y/N I'm to old, to sick and too stubborn not just for you but for everyone, when you said you would leave I was sad, but also glad, you deserve to be happy and not going feeling like you have to comeback."
"And what if I want to? What if I'm happy to be with you no matter how old, how sick and how stubborn you could be? That's not up to you DI Hardy... if I come back Alec, it will be because I want it no matter what you or anyone else has to say, I have spent most of my life listening to others, waiting, being cautious I'm done doing that I'm done being afraid" she said and short the distance between the two.
"I can't" he said pressing his forehead to hers, "I love you Y/N, if I kiss you now I would never be at peace knowing you are gone, it will consume me, you are right, you have to leave, I'll be right here, not waiting, hoping"
"You are the worst detective" she said and gave him a kiss on his cheek "and I think I love you too, I promise you I'll see you again" she said and run inside the train the fast that she could so she wouldn't regret her choice. And a few minutes later he, broadchurch, and blue sea sky were gone.

Blood tears and sea breeze
Hi! I wrote this at 1:46 in the morning, in the middle of a night shift on a saturday and I have some things to say:
It took me so long to finish this story for many reasons, first of all I got a full time job at the hospital and we got a lot of covid and not covid patients so that was physically and emotionally draining. Secondly I just lost inspiration, my life became one responsibility over the other and I had no more time to me, so I went in autopilot mode and tried to do the best I could.
And suddenly the year ended and I realized how much I missed, and finally something wonderful and magical happened. The love of my life proposed to me and I felt alive again,
I change jobs, I'm now a Resident so now I'll have even less time than before but I have so much more hope for the future. So here it is the end, may we read each other again, but for now this the conclusion of this story, told in three parts because it became longer than I thought

Chapter 21: Shadows...
The light inside the narrow corridor was flickering, maybe some old installation, how appropriate, the youngest of the Langfors thought, and old dusty and cold place, to keep the one responsible for all her tragedy.
Looking at her in the tiny space, covering her body with a blanket, she looked pathetic and yet she dare to have that stupid concerned look on her eyes, like she was the one about to go to jail, and not the other way around. Because her plan had worked, it all have worked out so perfectly, and now all that was left for Ash to do was saying goodbye.
Y/N was silent waiting for her to say anything, but she couldn't speak, no yet, she needed to see her like that, to keep in her mind that memory, she needed to remind the pain, because those were the only moments she felt alive.
"Was it something I did?" Y/N had a cautious tone, almost afraid to upset her, it was almost offensive, I'm not going to explode, she tought, I'm not a lunatic, but the familiarity of her concern pleased her. "How can I fix it?" Y/N plead and Ashley finally and looked at her, the fluorescent ceiling lamps gave the white room a blue shine but she was almost sure, as always, that the blue light was coming from her.
"It was just a card mommy" She said and before she could add something about how all the other children at preschool made one, the quick and hard stinging pain of a crop aimed at her side made her five year old body fall to the ground.
"Just a card? A card to a whoreson peasant" He and his stupid need to call himself royalty. There was no ounce of royal blood in him since at least three generations prior but he couldn't left it rest. "No daughter of mine will go around making a fool of herself by fraternizing with bastards in need, you are not some common whore and you will not bring shame to this house" he said about to strike another hit with the crop but she run, and left her room to the backyard, they will catch her in no time of course but she just wanted some air.
She didn't understand half of the words his father said, and definitely none of his stupid hate. She felt so alone, so sad and so empty, but she like it out there, she could look at the blue sky and the blue ocean meeting in the horizon, the beach was kilometers from her but was visible from her house, and specially she could see her, the tiny girl always happy and dancing with her mother and her older sisters, she was desperate to talk to her since she spotted her on day from her window, she wanted to know what she did to make her mother hold her like that, to make her father kiss her and give her presents every other day...
Ashley closed her eyes and shut the pain away like she always did, she needed to remember that pain, but then a tiny soft touch on her shoulder make her look up, there she was covered in a beautiful blue light, with a white dress, concerned look on her eyes.
"Why are you crying?" She asked, Y/N had jumped the fence from her house the moment she saw Ashley running. "Is it because your dress is torn? I can fix that, so your mommy won't be mad. Come on." She gave her a hand and she was sure she would never let her go, and for the years to come she didn't, until now.
"He was mine, and you took him, that's what you did" She said finally "Like you always do"
**********
"Forensics are on their way" Katie said once she entered the room again, the blood on the bodies looked fresh enough to know this was recent, other elements of the force have been there the day before arresting Langford and his sister said the parents where upset when she left them...
"Hey, what is a Baronet?" Derek asked, already gloves in hads and protectors on his feet "Is not like a actual royalty is it?"
"No, is the lowest rank and I think you have to pay for it and have land or something, why?" She asked putting on her gloves as well.
"A very old framed portrait of a guy, it says it's a baronet" He said showing it to her. A rapid Google search later and they found out that in fact Mr Langford's grandmother Dame Mildred Langford was the last Baronetess in their line, subsequently his father, Mildred's child born in 1946 chose to not keep the title and the nobility ended there.
There were many signals of adoration towards the woman, but very little towards his father.
"Langford is almost forty, so he was born around 1980, let's asume his father was 20 when he had him...Do you happen to know royalty gossip in broadchurch from the 1960s?" Katie said looking at the necks from the victims, there was a lot of hate and anger in there.
"No but I know someone who might" Ramos took out his phone and start calling "it may take a while, you should check the other room while I'm here... Hola tita? Como estas? Oye me pasas a tito por favor? It's a work thing please" Katie gave him a puzzled look. "My grandmother remarried to a English guy shut up!" He said while she exited the room. "Hola tito, I have a question for you"
The rest of the house was like the exterior, it surely had seen better days, old fashioned furniture and mold growing in some places, the only place remotely modern was in Langford's sister room, all pink an glittery, with 90s pop stars posters on the walls, the place was torn however, someone had been seeking something frantically there, Katie looked in the open window she could see next door house, smaller, and vacant but somehow happier. And in the backyard there was a pile of apparent garbage with flames and smoke coming out of it, with smoke still coming out of it and she run downstairs.
By the time she arrived at the backyard Ramos was already putting down the fire and trying to pick something before it was too late.
It was mostly old photographs in albums in the style of the framed picture in the livingroom. What probably were letters were now completely burn and in the middle of all the ashes there was a wooden box that miraculously haven't succumb to the fire yet.
*********
"Broadchurch police open now" Brian was about to tear the door down but nobody open, and even with Hardy screaming and putting out his gun the place looked abandoned.
"Looks pretty empty" Not only the deli but also the street, it was possible they hadn't open the whole morning "Are you sure she said the deli?" He said looking at the back alley next to the Trader's. But Brian didn't answer, he was trying the phone once again trying to reach her, and Hardy thought of how much would he loved to hear that stupid ringtone of Miller's phone when suddenly the muffled notes of the song he now will love for ever, whatever the fuck it was, came from behind the deli.
They rushed to the door of the back of the restaurant where they probably downloaded supplies and before they could agree on their actions they pushed the door down, of course it was empty apart from some vegetables but the sound was not coming from there, it was coming from behind the door of the freezer, where a fine line of light was coming maybe indicating the last hope they had.
They opened the door and Hardy's heart must be stronger than he had thought because he almost died with horror at the sight of Miller unconscious, with the skin completely pale, and the hair and her lashes covered in frost, with only a tiny mist coming out her mouth indicating she was still alive.
A millisecond after their initial shock they took her out and before she fall asleep again she was conscious enough to see both of the men she loved and to look at Alec and whisper a silent "Thank you"
****
"Maybe it would be easier if you told me how I stole him" you said, with the same tone you use to have for misbehaving children, specially since now you could not see an adult in front of you, only a very scared children, and very sorrow eyes. "I'm pretty sure I was already dating him when I introduce him to you and Charles, we were kind of apart at the time because of the Deli..."
"Oh you really are as stupid as you look don't you" she said irritated, but the superiority in her voice made you think she had bite, and she confirmed it when she continued "Do you happen to know how hard it is to win money with a Deli? Because I certainly don't, that restaurant and your idea of working there would have ruined me if it wasn't because I found a way to save myself"
She then proceeded to explain to you how she, Charles and that monster of a doctor that had treated you before worked together luring young rich men into buying rohypnol to drug innocent girls, only that the "innocent girl" in question happened to be a very alert and awake Ashley, so when they arrived at some hotel or secluded place Charles would extorsion them in order to "keep quiet" Easy money at expenses of creeps, and no victims, until she meet Jonathan.
"I texted Charles to let that one go, and we talked all night, I knew then and there that he loved me and that he was the one... he promised to call the next morning, but you have to appear, with your prudish routine, you stole the only man that ever loved me for me" she said and part of you believed her, but part of you was sure she was lying somehow.
"Then when we meet again he tried to denied it, he tried to pretend he didn't remember, he even proposed to you but at the end he couldn't keep it in for any longer and he came back to me" she said with an expression of triumph in her face like she was looking at something that was not there and for the first time since she arrived you felt angry at her, and disgusted by her smile.
****
"So Langford's father was a crazy old fuck, who hated his father's for loosing the title in order to be one with his people, apparently they have an old factory here in broadchurch, and all his workers love the man, when he died his child try by any means to regain the title and he lost the factory, the land and the family money, he only had this house... a tough environment to grow" Derek said once the box was safe out of the fire. "Also you are invited to my aunt Nicole's birthday party" he said a little embarrassed.
"Is your grandmother cooking? I'm in" Katie said casually while she tried to open the box and Derek relaxed immediately.
It opened with a click and inside it was a cellphone, with trembling gloved fingers she opened and realized it was Ashley's phone, there was the text she had seen so many days before, the one Jonathan sent before he died, she had an unopened voicemail so she checked it, it was a regular costumer asking why the deli was closed that day, but before she turned down again she went trough the saved messages it was only one.
"I know you won't listen, but I had to try" Jonathan Norbury's voice said he sounded tired and angry "I have been trying to make it easier for you so you won't get hurt but you left me no choice, I'm talking to Charles tonight, I'll give him his store back and I'm leaving Broadchurch in the morning, I'll go to London to set the venue..." He sighed as if he was about to do something painful "I love her Ash, I'm sorry but I do, I let my fear to disappoint my father drive me back to the alcohol and made you part of my mistakes, I should have never slept with you, I should have never let your brother near her... I'll marry her and I'll take her away from here... from you and your brother, and you can resume your life with Charles and your business, I won't involve the police as long as you left us alone, I promise, I know you, you are not as bad as you think you are, and you are worthy of love... it's only that I can not love you, I hate to said this to you but that night doesn't mean to me what it means to you, the girl of that night became a constant reminder of the life I needed to leave behind, of the man I don't want to be. I could had been you or any other woman that night and the result would have been the same, me going to AA and then to church and falling for her, because is only her, it's always been her and now I have to make it right. I'm sorry"
"Do you remember what they told us about what happened with the psychiatrist? The thing she did with her wrist?" Derek said while Katie's mind was racing with this new information cursing herself for not confiscating the phone the moment she first entered the station, she wasn't a suspect then, her conscience said but it was not enough
"About the bracelet?" She said rising her look surprised she could still process logical thoughts
"Did her mother had another one? You know like a pair or something?" He said completely serious.
"I don't know, maybe, why?" She asked looking at him.
"Because I think we have to arrest the Langford's for a whole new crime" he said giving her a picture of Charles next to a completely damaged car with an old couple dead inside, the woman was wearing a necklace that she immediately recognized as a pair to the bracelet she bagged as evidence so long ago, and even with the wounds the resemblance to Y/N was undeniable, those were her parents.
******
Miller woke up in a hospital bed with an IV on her arm and a lot of blankets and space heaters around her, Brian was there looking shocked at her and she had her heart full with joy for having him, but her sense of duty was bigger so before anything else she just asked "Where is Alec?"
"I'm trying really hard not to take this personally" Brian said almost angry "But is really hard to take you seriously when you look like a bloody burrito" he said pointing at the foil blanket over her "Shitface is out there"
"I'm sorry" She said immediately "I'm so glad you saved me, and I really love you now more than ever, but someone else's life is at risk and I need to talk to DI Hardy. We can discuss how much you hate him when we get home tonight ok?" She said and he was about to respond but the fact that she call his place home was enough to make him stand up and get Hardy inside.
"Is she awake?" He said desperately when he get inside and Brian exited the room not wanting to hurt his pride anymore, he trusted her enough and was enough in love to let her be. "How are you?" Alec said not sure if he could get closer.
"Don't mind me" She simply said like being nearly frozen to death was a regular Tuesday for her. "You have to get to the station quickly" she said pulling down most of the blankets and sitting on the bed. "Y/N is in danger, you were right she is innocent" she said and since Hardy didn't react immediately she add "And someone is about to kill her"
"How do you know?" He said and Miller couldn't help to notice the fear in his voice, he was already convinced she was innocent but he needed for her to tell him to make it real.
"The friend, it was her from the start and even before that... That woman is a monster. There is a sound recorder sewn inside my jacket, she confessed before tying me up and leaving me inside her stupid fridge" She said and show her two burning marks on her side "She used a teaser to knock me out, she knows her brother will break sooner or later so she choose to confess and tied all her lose ends"
"And she confessed to killing Jonathan and what else?" He asked and she was sure what he wanted to ask.
*****
"You should have told me" you said trying to buy time from her to think what to do next "If you knew he loved you so much you should have told me and I would have gladly go away... I have always wanted the best for you"
"Oh don't come at me with that ridiculous attitude, you knew we loved each other and what did you do?? You had to ruin everything, don't pretend now you don't remember" she said and suddenly everything became clear on your head
You were not mad that night because she left you alone in the dancefloor... but because you saw her kissing him, she was all over him and that stupid purple shirt, you were so mad at her, and you saw so much regret on his eyes but it didn't matter and you just wanted to get out of there, and then Charles came out of nowhere and you went out with him because you felt weird and weak and so confused...and then that happened, and by the time you wake up Jonathan was holding you so tightly and so lovingly that you chose to forget... as you had chosen to forget all those other times, you were sure now that that stupid voice in those videos was not you... and you pray for the forensics department to realize it was some cheap editing of your voice over your body... but you were certain you had actually slept with Charles just not as willingly as it seemed
You felt disgusted by yourself, and by those who claimed for so many years to be your friends, and you hate her so much in the way you can only hate someone you loved for so long and you had to ask because your heart was hurting so much.
"Why?"
She didn't answer, you where about to elaborate in the question because she had already told you why she killed him but she did understand you, she simply was looking for the answer
"Because you had everything I ever wanted"
****
Alec was driving as fast as he could, with Miller's story resonating on his head. Ashley Langford loved Y/N's life and hated her for a long time, when she was going away to Paris she thought she will finally take her place on her family.
But she soon realized that in Paris or in Broadchurch her parents would never stoploving her and she send Charles to mess their car, she saw them die, all because they decline her offer to live at their house when she left.
She was convinced Jonathan was in love with her since they met when he arrived at Broadchurch, but he rejected her when Y/N introduced them formally, maybe as Miller thought, he didn't even remember her. And then when they got engaged she found a way to get him drunk.
Their affair was simply disgusting, she will drug Y/N unconcious so she would sneak out with Norbury, assuring him Charles was simply watching her, but she needed to hurt her, to humiliate her, so she let Charlie take advantage of her over and over again until Jonathan found out at the club at the same time Y/N found out.
In the end Norbury had done the right thing and ended the affair. Hardy listen to the audio Harford sent him, and everything was becoming clear, now he only hope he will be on time.
****
"Do what you must then" You said "If this will make up for whatever it is I did to you... then just do it already" you said now ready to accept the end, and desperate to stop feeling this much hurt.
You thought one last time of DI Hardy, you may be innocent from the murder, but Ashley had made a good work destroying everything you care about and you felt so unworthy of him, even if she didn't killed you you could never look at him so it was better this way.
"No yet" she said and she reach inside her pocket, only now you saw she was holding a gun on her right hand "You knew your dear Alec is out of the case for getting too cozy with you?" Maybe when this is over I will visit him, I'm sure a man like him will be glad to have a women in his life after what happened to his friend Miller" She said and you fear the worst specially sin DS Miller had told you she thought Ashley may be involved in all of this "And after his little whore blow her brains out" she said. "Do you think Paul will say something for you? As far as I know suicidal people get no favors from church" every word she said was meticulously aimed to hurt, and she said them so casually that it almost felt spontaneous "Oh don't get anxious, your end is coming, but first you have to wear this"
You knew what it was before she finished her sentence, a delicate necklace just like the bracelet you longed for so many years, your mother had the necklace so you wouldn't feel alienated by having to wear it, you had given her the bracelet back so long ago and when she died it was never found... and you understand without her telling you that somehow she was responsible for them dying too. And the disgust for her and yourself turn to anger, to a primal need to erase her existence and she was there smiling and something broke inside your mind.
****
Alec was walking fast to the cells, ready to kill Ashley Langford but by the time he got to Y/N's cell he froze still as he saw Y/N extended her hand to take what seemed to be a necklace while Langford pointed her gun at her.
What happened next was so quickly that he almost didn't had time take his own revolver out. Y/N trembling hand became steady to take the necklace and she took Ashley by surprised by pulling her arm inside the cell and taking the pistol from her hand.
"Oh come on do it" Ashley said surprising Hardy and Y/N "Prove me and the world that you are not perfect, that you are as rotten and corrupted as me, come on kill me!" She said and Alec finally speak.
"She is not" he said loud enough for them to hear but he was not screaming. "The only corrupted and repellent creature here is you" he said approaching slowly trying to get Y/N's attention but she was still firmly holding bot the gun and Ashley "You are not like her" he said again.
"I told you detective that I never wanted to find out who did this because I was afraid of what I would become" she said and he was afraid for a second by the anger in her voice. "This ... woman" She said as if she wasn't sure she could call Ashley that "Took everything from me, my dignity, my reputation, my friends... even my family" she said with so much suffering in her voice that he only could flinch his fist inside his coat. Where the fuck was the other guard? "She took the man I loved... the man I thought that also loved me"
"She didn't" he said and took out his phone, he held it in front of him as he approached her and play the audio.
"That's a lie" Ashley start screaming, now completely unbalanced, "He loved me, he loved me!!!!" At the moment the words "it's only her" came out of the phone Y/N hand relaxed and Hardy use the opportunity to take the gun out of her hand and pull Langford aside, as the bloody security guard finally arrived, without hesitation he took the keys from his hand and opened the cell while the man carried a very disturbed Ashley away, and before Y/N could fall in the darkness and space out again he hold her against his chest.
"It's you, it's only you"

Blood, tears and sea breeze
Hello hello hello!! I hope some of you keep reading this, and or if there are new people out there I hope you are reading it and being safe.
First a couple things, I decided to divide the final chapter in two parts, it has a better flow that way think, anyway this is a dark and very disturbing chapter, I was in a sad place when I wrote it.
I have something to share, I recently lose my Grampa and an aunt to coronavirus, so now taking care of myself in the hospital and in the street feels meaningless since those who I trust to take care of him staying at home were selfish enough to party and going out without thinking of him... he was the sweetest man ever, I'm just heartbroken and eternally sad since the world lost an honest man, a great father and a loving grandfather. So for what is worth take care of your loved ones.
Thanks if you still here, it means the world to me.

Chapter 20: Cold
Miller image faded into the sunrise on his bedroom, she was desperate to tell him something, and he had listened but now he had forgotten, the pain had passed and before he realized he was walking towards his bathroom, not sure of how he got out in the first place, he definitely needed to see that cardiologist in London that Daze had recommended, apparently he was an assistant professor in her Uni and he would be able to fix him.
"Basic human care on himself? Are you mad darling?" Y/N had said playfully teasing him when he brushed off the suggestion a couple days before.
He hold still to the bathroom sink and regain composure before exiting. Those feelings and thoughts would not let him down, he had a renewed spirit and he was determined to end this nightmare. He looked at his reflection on the mirror, his hair was a mess, and his beard was perfectly uneven, the shirt was opened, when that happened? The echo of Miller's voice was still in the distance, but he will deal with her later.
He took a pair of scissors out of the cabinet and tried to make something about the rebel hairs of his beard, he took a shower and with all the strength he had left on him, he put on a suit in his room trying to ignore the thought of all that could have been and wasn't.
He got out of his house, and drove downtown, not completely sure about what he was going after, but determined to finish it all.
***************************************************
"A bit early isn't reverend?" Dasy Hardy said picking up the phone "Before you said anything, I have to apologize, you acted like a gentleman, and I was being ridiculous" she said remembering the last time she saw him.
She had gone out with Chloe and her friends, they were drunk and she was feeling left out being the only single there, so she called his ride home, as promised to Y/N, reverend Coates was there to pick her up, she had been openly flirting with the man, not that he reciprocated any of her advances, but the alcohol made her bold and she kissed him, and for a brief second after the shock she could almost feel he kissed her back, but he stepped away immediately and scolded her on her behavior, and make sure she went home.
She had been angry at first, and finally ashamed, and went back to London the next day, but after a couple days, and specially after the news from home came that night she was glad to be surrounded by men like him and his father, even when she was not convinced entirely about Y/N culpability, she was hoping her father would found the truth since the teacher made him happy, and he deserved some happiness.
"You were drunk, there was nothing honorable about not taking advantage of the situation" Paul said on the other line, he was not sure why did he choose to call her, he was flattered by her attitude, she was after all a beautiful woman, but she was 19, and his interest on her was merely as a friend, since she had very insightful opinions on many things, and right now he needed an unbiased approach to his problem, so he talked to her.
"I personally think religion takes too much of people, and that may be just my philosophy class speaking, but it is important and a central point of who you are, so if this person whomever it is, respects you as a friend, they wouldn't ask for you to sacrifice that" she said and after a while she add "And I'm sure you came to the same conclusion on your own, so why did you call?" She asked.
"I don't know, to convince myself that I'm not acting wrong?" He said feeling like a child, but glad to have someone to talk.
"I'm sure she will forgive you" she said and the pause on the other side confirm her suspicions.
"I didn't..." he started trying to hide his mistake.
"You didn't have to, so now that we both have an embarrassing secret the other is keeping we can call it even?" She said to his relief, and they talked for another five minutes about nothing in particular.
***********
Miller's hands were hard to move, and his heartbeat was about to give up, the rope against his wrist had definitely marked her skin permanently, but her mind was nowhere near her actual distress, all she could think was her children, and who would take care of them once that lunatic won. Brian for sure, he was a good man, and she actually loved him, she was glad she had the chance to tell him that before everything went down so badly, that morning kiss was so far away now, as a warm tear run down her cheek heating her face momentarily while the cold room make it hard to breathe.
The freezer was small, maybe 2x2 meters, and she was now well aware of the circumstances that lead to Norbury's dead, her phone unreachable to her began to ring, Brian was again calling for her, it was already time to go to lunch, and her last hope was that maybe someone, would be looking for her, and before falling asleep and let the cold to take her away she hoped once last time for Hardy to come find her.
***************
"Is going to be easy right?" Ramos said to Harford looking at Charlie voluminous police record, "I mean the guy rigged his mate motorcycle to get back at him, I don't think we have to worry about him not getting sentenced"
"You'll be surprised on how quickly things change" Alec said on the door of the office and they stood there in dead silence "oh for fucks sake, don't look at me like that, ramos give me my coffee, Harford where the hell is Miller?" He said, and Ramos only gave him a nod, and a quick smile to Katie before running towards the kitchen.
"She hasn't showed up yet" She wanted to ask if she talked to him the night before but she stop herself. "Here are the declarations of the suspects, and the evidence we gather on them.
"What's all that" he said pointing at some old newspaper, it didn't escape Katie's attention that he avoid by all means look at Y/N's pictures.
"Miller's nephew made me a favor and gave me some old papers on our main suspect, mostly bar fights and drunk spectacles" She said and picked one from the pile "The only positive one is this, an add for a motorcycle's workshop" he said and showed him the picture of Charles and other man in front of a familiar street. "The other guy was the owner but he sell out the shop and he had to go back to work with the sister, he rigged the braces on the bike, and that's why he got arrested like... 5 years ago" She said and showed him the record.
"This is the Trader's right?" He said putting a magnifying glass on the facade in the corner of the picture.
"I think so, why?" She said puzzled.
"Because that means this is whe Jonathan's electronic shop is right now" He said.
"So Charlie knew who he was before he started dating Y/L/N?" She asked exited "And since he hates working with his sister so much, that gives him a motive" he said exited too
"Seriously?? I was out 5 minutes" Ramos said holding 3 cups of coffee "SOCO Brian wants to talk to you by the way, he seems upset" he said putting down the mugs but before Hardy could ask anything the man was inside his office.
"Hey Shitface!" He started visibly angry, but he changed his tone once Harford looked at him, he would like to say it was out of politeness but the truth is the anger on his look could make anyone back down. "I get you are sick, and I get the case is important, but why the fuck you can't let my girlfriend come have lunch, that's just borderline psychotic" he said and Alec looked at him perplex.
"Miller is not here, wait... how do you know I was sick?" He asked remembering something.
"Because she talks to me idiot, that's what couples do, she came home last night at midnight because your stupid arse didn't want to go to the hospital and she left way too early this morning to do the work you are not doing, and now she is not even picking up he phone.
"DS Miller isn't here" Ramos said since Hardy was silent "She hasn't showed up yet"
Alec's mind became clear, it wasn't a dream, she was there the night before, she got him out of the bathtub and helped him to bed, she made some comments on the status of his beard so he was anxious to trim it, she told him she was almost sure Y/N was innocent and that there was something wrong about Charles and Ashley stories, and she told him something important, something very important...
"What was the last thing she said to you?" He asked Brian a little to aggressive "Where does she said she went? Did she said something about the case?"
"No, we don't like talking about work, her idea" he said excusing himself and fearing for her safety understanding that something might had happened to her.
Miller was looking thorough his desk while he was sitting next to her, he was barely conscious and the pain was still strong in his chest
"It would be easier if you tell me what are you looking for" he said once she look closely to Y/N journals, for a moment he thought she would make a scene about it, but she was to busy to do that.
"No sir, it would be easier if you do as we told you and go to a bloody doctor for once" she said and smiled when he rolled his eyes. "Here it is" she said putting a piece of paper in her pocket and helping him back to bed"
"I'm sorry" he said once she left him lied down "I shouldn't have trust her..." he started but she stopped him.
"Is too soon to say anything, I wouldn't stop trusting your instincts just yet" she said and before going she gave him a soft kiss on the forehead "I'll see you tomorrow at the parents house"
"She said she would go to keep doing some interrogations first and she told me she will meet me for lunch, she said she would bring something back from the deli" he said and something click inside Hardy's head. He rushed out of his office with Brian behind him and before exiting the bullpen he screamed at Ramos
"Go to the parents house!"
**********
Doctor Florence arrived at the station wanting to see Alec, but he was nowhere to be found, so another agent would have to take her statement, but since she was desperate Elaine Jenkinson have to go out of her office to settle down the matter.
"I saw in the paper that you arrested Michael Bolzano, and the Echo says he was spiking drinks with Rohypnol" she said once she was comfortably sitting on Chief Jenkinson's couch "I'm not sure why but I have a familiar feeling about the name, and then I saw his picture, I'm not sure of course, but he might not be who he says he is" she took out an old phonebook yellow page and gave it to her.
It was from Broadchurch yellow pages, from maybe ten or twenty years before, when such things were necessary and not everything was in the bloody phones as Martha call them, there was an add listing all of Broadchurch psychologist and psychiatrists, but since the list was up to 5 they all have pictures, there was doctor Florence a gorgeous young woman, that turned out to be a very beautiful woman now, and right below her Dr. Valerio Marchesi, an alleged child psychologist and a very young version of Michel Bolzano, with a beard and glasses.
"He was Y/N Y/L/N therapist over twenty years ago, thankfully her parents took her with me before it was too late, shortly after he make a four year old die from a benzodiazepine overdose he was discredited and his license was removed" the doctor said and Elaine was glad she had took the time to talk to her.
***********
"I'll drive shitf... Hardy" Brian said and his worried tone took Alec off guard, but then he realized that of course he was worried, he loved Miller, it made perfect sense, she was after all a magnificent woman, he had loved her deeply and he was sure he still loved her somehow, in a different, more mature way, maybe even stronger, he would give his life for her, even if they were never together again.
"Fine" he said reluctantly giving him his keys. "I shouldn't be driving anyway" he said and inadvertently brushed his hand over his heart.
"You should really go to a doctor mate" Brian said, and the situation was so surreal to Alec that he almost missed the lack of the unflattering nick name.
"Maybe when this is over" he said simply "in the next one to the right, the block before the Trader's garage" he said indicating the way. He was trying to remain calmed, but his mind reminded him of a ticking clock, begging for his instinct to be right and for the first time in years praying to get to her on time.
**********
"And I thought there were no longer rich people at broadchurch" Ramos said once they parked in front of the Langford's old house "Quite the life they wanted to leave behind isn't it?" He said and Harford noted that while the house was big and elegant it looked empty and somehow sad, compared to the comfortable cottage next, she could picture a little Y/N desperate to go play with Ashley and being a happy girl on her backyard, and the feeling of uncertainty about her being the killer once again attack her.
The front door was opened, it felt like a bad omen, Miller had said that Mr and Mrs Langford didn't take well the news of Charlie's arrest, so they walked inside, expecting to see the angry old couple.
The inside was also lonely, several religious pictures on the walls, some even too much for Ramos taste, and that coming from someone raised with a very catholic abuelita was a lot, it also was clear that they were not fond of Ashley, her face was completely ripped off some pictures except for one.
Over a piano, facing a window looking at the backyard was a picture of two girls, it didn't match the rest of the frames, the rest were elegant and gray, this one was pink, with some cute glittery letters that said BFF, it looked old, someone had definitely put there recently since the layer of dust of the others didn't match, and the thing that captured Derek's attention the most was some ugly dark red paint covering one of the girls face...
"Shit! Bloody hell Ramos come here" Derek rushed towards Katie as soon as he heard her screaming. And stood still and cold once he got there.
Lying on their bed tugged in blankets there were Mr and Mrs Langford, anyone could have think they were sleeping, except for the pool of blood under the bed and the exposed flesh on their necks.
*********
You could listen a murmur in the distance, the cold approaching towards you, the sound of papers being checked and a couple of doors opening.
The shadow was closed, and even when it had a name and a face once it was in front of you it was hurtful and almost unbearable to see all that hate and anger on those beautiful green eyes that once meant all to you.
"Hey Ash" you said, remembering some old tv show were they said in an argument the first to talk is the loser, not like it would matter, the mere fact that she was there meant you had already loose. "Could you make it quick at least?" You asked and she didn't say anything, she had that sad empty look in her eyes she used to get when Charles picked on her, when her parents made her cry, when a boy rejected her, when you told her you were engaged... and like all those times you had to make her happy, getting in trouble too, lecturing Charles, talk sense into a guy, lose the man you loved... die.

Chapter 19: Espresso
A defective faucet was leaking in the kitchen, and the sound echoing in the empty room was loud enough to drive someone mental, but for the broken ma siting in the empty room, and looking at nothing in particular it was just something else to listen to.
Alec hardy start pacing the room, thinking about everything and nothing at the same time, he was glad his daughter was already back in school so she was not there to see the spectacular way he destroyed his library the moment he saw the videos of Y/N in his computer a few moments after Harford took her away from him. Daze would have been worried, and he didn't want that. He just wanted to ease the pain and shut down all the screaming inside his head.
Again... was the only word his mind was coherently producing at the moment, Again... the smirking face of Claire Ripley laugh at him You love to fall for the defenseless girl act, don't you Alec? She said and and suddenly the pain in his chest became more real, his hands began trembling and the air became hard to pass AGAIN... the imagine of Tess playfully touching the shoulder of one of his colleagues in front of him while she pretended it was nothing You are being paranoid, you have to trust me. She had said so many times until he found out...
The pain move to his back and her neck and he knew it could be bad, and for a brief moment he considered the possibility of staying there and let his heart fail for once, and shock at his own perceived weakness and altered thoughts he walked slowly to his bathroom and frantically searched the cabinets desperate to find the small bottle Isosorbide, it was still good for another month, and it was almost full since he had been almost a year without needing it, he took one out and crushed it to put the white powder under his tongue, it was bitter for a moment, it had been so long he had almost forgot the taste.
But he needed it, to get better, and to go back to the station, he needed to make it right for Miller, even if it meant to put her behind bars for ever...
Again... he thought for a moment siting on his floor with his back on his bathtub before the darkness consumed him, he remembered that feeling he had that night of summer, after they caught Trish offender, a few years ago. He saw Miller go away without him on the piers, knowing too well he loved her and that it would end up badly, it was the same feeling he had for Y/N when she left, it would take everything from him to send her away, but he had to, he had to do his job, regardless of his own feelings...again.
****
"So she confessed huh?" Agent Ramos said reading Y/N declaration, "I mean I'm glad we have them, but I still think this is confusing, she didn't play the insanity card, and she didn't even wanted a lawyer" he pased the pages of Y/L/N file desperate to find something missing "She insists that she doesn't remember shaggin Langford, but she admits she asked him to murder Norbury?"
"And that she saw him putting his body on her cottage, but Langford keeps saying he didn't killed him, he just says they were together" Miller pointed out, she was sure that the partiality in her confession was insufficient to charge Charlie for anything but she needed time to put all the pieces of the puzzle in place.
She checked her phone, Alec hadn't call yet, and she was desperate to go to his place and find him, but first she had to be sure Y/N was guilty, that was the only way she would talk to him "Katie would you please bring me the DNA results from the ring?" She said, already knowing the cut on Charles' face was made with that rock, how she was not sure yet, but something about the clean cut told her it was. She was interrupted in her train of though when a very flustered Harford entered her office barely looking at Ramos, or better said desperately not looking at the man.
"Is that lipstick?" Miller asked, noticing a nice shade of pink on the agent lips who almost dropped the papers, and now was Ramos the one acting nervously.
"Yeah, it was a present" she said and Miller look at them both, and couldn't help but laugh, it was the single most unexpected thing that could happen that day and yet she was happy for them, and she was surprised to wonder what took them so long since they were quite perfect for each other.
"Just talk to HR before something else happens" she said to relief of the young detectives, "It's quite nice color, by the way" she said taking the results from Katie's hands.
"I was nervous she will be mad that I got the idea from the case, but she found it funny and ironic" Ramos said once she exited the room, and Miller was glad to have something else to talk about if merely for a moment.
"How come?"
"The lipstick, is the same brand we found in Norbury's car, is not the same femme fatal red, but I thought she might like it, like an inside joke, of course I didn't engrave 'My goddess' on it, only her ID number, you know professional" he said and Miller's world stopped for a moment that felt eternal, as the images of pink discrete lips and red seductive ones passed trough her mind she took her coat and the last piece of the puzzle fall in place, Y/N was right this was not over, she needed to find Hardy and fast.

Reverend Coates hanged up the phone, with his heart aching for the poor lost soul on the other line, and then he prayed for his own soul still doubting about whether or not it was worth it to break the seal of confessional for a woman.
But Y/N was not just any woman, he said to himself, she had been so much more in the past, his steps guide him to the graveyard where he had spent so many sleepless nights before. She had been so much more than just a woman for him, and at the same time she had been just the woman for him, and at risk of being selfish or vane, he kept dearly to him the memory of being the first man on her life, in a simpler, easier time... and he will be lying if he denied that seeing her next to DI Hardy didn't bother him, he was okay with Jonathan, even when he had given him ideas about the proposal he never really thought they would go trough with the wedding, something about making it more about his mother than the bride, and he will be there like always to heal her wounds, and maybe when they were both older they would end up together, but of course Paul never thought it will get to that horrid situation.
But it was different with Hardy, he made her laugh effortlessly, and the way her eyes bright and her voice flowed happy when she talked about him make him jealous, not just for losing an unspoken empty promise but one if not his best friend, and at the same time he was ready to let her go, and his childish selfish fantasy, specially knowing Alec Hardy was a good man, who will protect her no matter what, specially since right now she needed someone just as Hardy to protect her.
Since the shadow that desperately seek for her doom was advancing diligent to her end, and he had his hands tied by his faith. Even when he had loved her, he wasn't sure about throwing everything away for her. She had loved him too, when the sadness in her life that drowned her to his arms, and then they just fall out of love when those tragedies were gone, and he became such a different man that their growing apart was a blessing, he spent the next years looking after her knowing too well she was desperate to fly away from the town, but too remorseful and scared to do it.
And he couldn't help but thinking most of this situation was his fault, he thought again of God's ineffable plan and how the gears of destiny started to move the moment a pair of blue eyes sitted across him on his AA and said:
"Hi everyone, my name is Jonathan Norbury, and I'm an alcoholic" Paul committed the sin of prejudice the moment he entered the room, thinking he was just another rich man trying to superficially ease his guilt, judging by his city clothes and posh accent, but there was a sincerity in his voice that make him change his mind as he listened "I did something bad... is not like is the first time, but I need it to be the last one, I'm new in the the town, Broadchurch, my father... that's not important... the thing is I'm on my own for the first time in a long time, I have been drinking and doing a bunch of stupid stuff since I was 14, but I have been specially stupid for the last 72 hours, and something happened last night and I just need it to stop..." he said and Paul listened closely every word. "I meet this girl at the club, she was gorgeous, we danced, we drink, and I tried to take her home, but she refused, then this bloke, the bartender he said I will help you, I was too drunk I didn't understand what he meant, but he gave her another drink an then..." all of the present, specially those that had been there sober for a few years now shared a look, and Paul was horrified by the implications of the story "She was acting like a new born deer, and I help her to walk and she begged me to takeher home, she was needy, trying to kiss me and I realized I didn't even knew her name or who she was, so I drove her to a 24/7 coffee spot, and gave her some espresso... " someone audibly sighed in relief and the man let go a side smile "She sober up and we talked for a while, right now I am almost sure I forgot her name, but for the first time I understand what my father wanted me to see, that my actions had consequences, and I realized I'm not willing to keep hurting people with my ways, so I'm here, I'm willing to do the job, and I'm willing to change" he then smile with that timid disarming smile that Paul was about to know people found so charming.
Coates approach him after the meeting, they exchange numbers, and less than 12 hours later he called, he wanted to drink, and ask him to distract him.
"Just don't send me to read the bible" he said and laughed nervously and he could feel his desperation so he invited him to his church, not to the service but to paint some old benches. "And the lord will heal me?" He asked sardonically.
"No, but you could use some hard work and soul searching, city boy" he said and made him also replant some flowers.
The next day he repair a cabinet, and the third day they just talked, he was definitely not Broadchurch material, but his tortured soul was getting better, and he was glad to have a friend, and then he meet her.
She was scolding Danny Latimer for a poorly written essay, while Tom Miller was trying to make his mother old laptop to work with Paul.
"They are just kids, let them have some fun" He said and she gave Paul and inquisitive look since she didn't knew the man.
"Mr. Norbury is helping me with some work around the church"
"Mr. Norbury, really mate?" He made a disapproving gesture "I'm Jonathan, you can call me John or Johny, whatever sits you love" he said trying to pull out the London charm.
"I'll stay with Mr. Norbury, thanks" she said to him and his smile disappear immediately, making the boys laugh. And just like that Jonathan fall for the same spell Paul had fallen many years before, and his life turned around, Broadchurch suddenly was fun to him, the need to drink was almost nonexistent compared to the need to prove himself to her, and he was happy, and Paul was glad he put them together at the time, maybe that was God's plan, but things turn for the worst as suddenly as they started.
Pretending Paul didn't ask him to tell her the truth was useless because he did, so much that Jonathan changed AA groups, he wanted his past buried, and he understood it, but he was sure Y/N deserved the truth How do you know what is best for her? He had said the last time he confronted him I'm her fiance, I know what is best for us. And Paul hoped it was true, but as trouble with his store and tensions with his parents rose Jonathan went closer and closer to his older ways, and his restraints grew thinner and thinner until they break, and even Y/N compassionate soul was not enough to pull him back to his path.
And the shadow desperate to consume her, luring around her since she was a child took advantage of his weakness to finally take vengeance on her.
That tortured creature on the phone had confessed a few days ago, the how, and the why of Jonathan's death, and his heart was still aching to know it wasn't in pursuit of redemption, but to torture him with his own vow of silence so he could not help her, the woman he once loved so deeply, and now another call, to gloat on the fact that the teacher was paying for Jonathan's death, and since charging on his soul the truth without avail to help her was his punishment, he feared for Alec Hardy, since this shadow was determined to consume every source of love Y/N ever had.
He saw the sun setting on the horizon, wondering again what to do, he ask God for forgiveness, and finally picked up the phone.

I hope everyone is safe and healthy. Please take care of yourselves, mental health is so important, specially in times like this. We will get out of this, until then I send you a lot of love and hugs from here.

Chapter 18: Reality
The stinging pain across your cheek somehow brought you back to reality, a reality that you had comfortably numbed away the moment the handcuffs closed around your wrists.
But reality could be tricky sometimes, because the brief stolen kisses on his livingroom, the innocent way he touched your face, and the hunger look on his eyes every night you escape to sleep alone in his room were part of reality, even when now they feel ages away, and numbing all the pain, all the desperation even those perfect moments was the best solution you could find, because the way the kindness evaporate from his eyes when he told you "Miss Y/L/N, you are under arrest for the murder of Jonathan Norbury" and was replaced for an empty void and disappointment in his voice, was enough to keep you from wanting to be in this reality.
But you were back, the echo of Ash words were hurting you, because she was wrong, you love them too, and you would have never wanted any of that trouble for them, she was wrong for believing that you wanted any of this, but she was right to call you all thos hurtful things, even when you were not sure of what you did you felt like you deserved it.
And what did you do? Did you really slept with Charlie? Charlie who was more like an awkward little brother that anything to you, did you really order him to ... kill Jonathan? Even thinking about it was to hard to process, you tried search for your bracelet again knowing to well it wasn't there, but your hands were handcuffed to the table and the more you pull from them the more they hurt, and the cold steel started to mark your wrists.
And somehow that pain kept you from blacking out, the thought of Alec angry and sad because of you alone in his house again, Ashley's words, and Jonathan's body on the floor, and you started crying, letting the pain wash out from your eyes, and then as your wrist started to bleed from the handcuffs clarity followed, you were not screaming as last time, because there was something you could not shake off your mind, something that was almost ridiculous, like the idea of even touching Charlie, and the sudden realization make you wanted to laugh, but you keep it quiet, because the pretty officer that had brought you in returned with a laptop and you didn't want to appear more disturbed than they already thought you were.
***************************************************
"Sugar?" Miller said offering a small bowl to Ashley Langford, she seemed stressed and there were a few wrinkles around her eyes and her hair looked less shiny than usual, somehow Miller thought, she looked more human.
"Oh no, it's fine thank you" she said and kept looking at the door. " I'm sorry for the way I acted, is just that my parents are very old and having the police coming and trash the place was..." she put the tea aside and covered her face with her hands before starting to cry. "How did this happened? My brother is an asswhole but he would never... oh god what did he do?" She cried again and Miller offered her a paper tissue.
"Miss Langford I'm so sorry for the inconvenience that this process is causing you, but I can't tell you any details about the investigation, we are going to need you to cooperate with us and told us everything about your brother relationship with Y/N" she said and the woman rise her look puzzled.
"I'm sorry, but I already know, everybody knows" she said and Miller was shocked to hear that. "It's all on the internet, a friend of mine send it to me this morning, I called Charlie and he gave me a very confusing response and I run to my parents house to question him about them, but they had already arrested him" she said and took her phone out of her purse to show her.
They were not the explicit videos that Ramos had found, but they left clear that Y/N and Charlie were together and they had killed Jonathan.
"What did your brother said?" Miller asked when a quick search on her social media let her know that maybe all of Broadchurch had seen Y/N confession.
"I don't know, he sounded confused, angry, he said That count thinks that because that old jock is shagging her now she can dump me she is crazier than I thought, we'll see how much he likes her after this" she was convinced he meant some of the girls he often meet at bars, but the truth was clear to Ellie.
A couple nights before, in the middle of the night Alec had texted her to meet on the piers, on their usual spot. And after some crafted lie to Brian she was there, ready to fight whatever demon was torturing his mind, however what she found was different, he had a quiet smile, looking at the waves, and enjoying the sound of the ocean in the night, if she didn't knew him any better she would have swear that he was humming a song.
"Having a good night sir?" She asked and sited next to him.
"Miller, do you think I'm bad at my job?" He asked and she kept trying to guess his train of thought, a sixth sense told her she already knew what was happening, but she didn't want it to be truth.
"Yes, you are a nightmare, what is happening?" She said humoring him and he became all serious.
"Just answer the bloody question Ellie" the use of her name let her know it was serious so she looked at the ocean for a a long moment before speaking.
"You are not, you are capable, witted, yes you are a nightmare, but you are quite good at your job" She said honestly.
"Do you trust my judgment?" He asked then almost in a whisper.
"Without a doubt sir" she said, and before he could reply and make her part of something that was clearly against the rules she stoped him. "I trust you would never jeopardize an active investigation, and that whatever choice you make on your... personal... life, would be after a deep and conscious consideration" she said looking deeply into his eyes.
"Ellie..." He started but he knew he should keep it quiet, this was for the best. "Thank you detective Miller"
"You are welcome sir, and if I may... I hope you are happy, and have a good night" she said, meaning every word, even when the pain was pushing to make her cry. "I will change the patrol on your house tomorrow, to someone more trustworthy, you know for safety" she said and walked away from the piers, leaving him with that stupid smile on his face.
And now all she could think off was him alone in his house angry at himself and she had the need to run to his side, but no, there was only one way out of this for him, without damaging his image more, and that was with a conviction on Y/N, so she took Ashley Langford declaration and it was now certain for her that Charles had posted those videos, the how he found out Y/N was involved with a certain scottish man was still a mystery but she was determined to find out.
***************************************************
But I like you and your cock better than Jonathan's, Charlie the sound of your voice coming from the laptop saying those things almost made you throw up, but you kept watching You should kill him already and we can leave this place, don't you think big boy? It was you, there was no doubt about it, it was you in a very ordinary and nasty room, acting like a drunk idiot, rubbing your almost naked body on Charles, who had the creepiest smug on his face and you wanted to slap that dump expression out of him, this was degrading and humiliating, but you were focused, as you had been the last few days, everything was more clear than it had been in the last year and your mind was running fast trying to focus on one sole detail.
You have seen at least four different videos of yourself and the dates on them click on your head with dumb fights with Jonathan, headaches or days that everything seemed blurry, and for a solid minute your mind start deviating and consider the idea that maybe you were actually guilty, that maybe this semi naked idiot was actually you, but before that ridiculous idea could consume you another stupid phrase out of Charlie's mouth made DC Ramos blush and made you remember something as DC Harford looked careful at you.
The last time you had blushed was a few days ago in Alec's couch, once you came back from the cliff and he turned up the heat since the both of you were wet from the rain that had made you run inside, kissing him had been a childish decision, and he kissing you back was just as bad, but now you were sitting on the couch covered with a blanket and holding a cup of tea, glad that Daze was god knows where and you could talk like adults.
"We shouldn't" you started, "I want to, I really do, but you are still leading the case, and I can't lie, and if someone asks me are you sleeping with detective Hardy I will say yes, and ..." You blush at the look he gave you and quickly hide your face away from his smile.
"Fine, you should lock your door tonight then" he said jokingly with a playful grin and for a moment you wonder were have this man been all this time.
"Sure detective, let's make dinner, I'm starving" you said and kissed him again, thinking at the moment that everything was alright, but now as agent Ramos looked uncomfortable away from you the little bubble of happiness was finally burst, and once again that anger make your memories come back to you the image of the night club cleared, the toothy grin of the man in the red shirt, finally had a name, and things became more and more focused and you looked up to DC Harford.
"Enough" You said a little more aggressive than expected, but they stopped looking at you with petty on their eyes if just for a moment. "I seen enough, what do you want to know?"
***************************************************
"Look everyone in Broadchurch is talking about you" Miller started showing Charles her phone with the edited videos "Are you going to keep pretending that you had nothing to do with this or are you finally going to talk?" She said and the authority on her voice irritated him.
"Where is the guy?" He asked looking at the empty chair next to her, but he had abandoned the erratic tone, and was talking quietly.
"In the other room talking to your girlfriend here" she said pointing at the pictures. "Whom I think will say everything so I will recomend you to start talking"
"No the little eye candy, the other one, the old one" he said and smiled when she change her stoic look. "I liked the guy, seems tough" he said with honesty and she repressed the impulse to sigh in relief.
"He is not working today" she said and tried to regain her pose. "He is loosing all the fun".
"Oh sad, because this is so entertaining" he said sarcastically "What do you expect me to say? I post them, she is suppose to be mourning, and sad, but no, the little cunt is so happy walking holding hands with some arse, well what can I expect right? She cheated on Jonathan, why wouldn't she cheat on me too" he said it upset at the thought of the woman seeing another men, and the whole situation became ridiculous to Miller, and at the same time something was not coming together.
"Did you saw her with someone else?" She asked cautiously, knowing too well that until the las four hours she had been enclosed in Hardy's house and if she ever leave his place was with him.
"I did, a couple days ago, acting like Jonathan was nothing to her, like I was nothing" He said, and she desperately needed to know if he was lying, because if he meant Alec he would have said it since the beginning, but if he meant someone else, who? Unless... maybe he was fabricating the whole thing.
"How was him?" She asked and without hesitation she add "I mean she has a type, Jonathan, you... another how did you call agent Ramos? Eye candy"
"Yeah" he said smiling sardonically "Some bloke, you know tall, black hair, I could take him down" it sounded rehearsed, and it became clear he was lying when he nervously add "Clean shaved bastard"
She was about to say something else when the door was opened and a nervous Harford came inside.
"I'm sorry to bother you, but we need you" she said and Miller followed her outside leaving a puzzled Charlie behind.
"What happened?" She asked and Katie looked at her feet uncomfortable "She still hasn't talked?"
"No, that's the problem, she talks but she says she doesn't remember anything..." she started
"Well she make this idiot kill her fiance I'm not surprised she wants to pretend it didn't happen" Miller say spiteful.
"No that's not the problem, she says she will confess, but only to you" she said and Miller was surprised to hear that.
"Absolutely no" she said calmly.
"I say that and she went silent again" I try everything, we even show her how those videos are running through all the town, by the way how the fuck that happened?" She said and show her a link send to her by her dad. "But she keeps asking for you"
Ellie remembered the last time she walked inside that particular interrogation room, a part of her wanted answers, but she feared she would act up against her, and ruin the case as she have done all those years ago, but no, Haedy needed her to fix this, so she make up her mind an asked Katie to leave her alone inside.
***************************************************
"Ellie" you said once she was sitted in front of you, "it may be in our best interest if you gave me 5 minutes before turning on that thing" you said looking at the tape recorder that Harford had turned off.
"Is Detective Miller, and why would I listen to you?" She said and her tone was not only dry and professional but also rude at some point.
"Because if you care about Alec as much as I do you may want to hear what I have to say first" you said and she raised her hand and you prepared to feel the pain in your face again but she only put the pictures of Jonathan's body and screenshots from the filthy videos in front of you.
"This is caring for him?" She said and this time was no longer any professionalism on her voice. "You have five minutes" she said finally.
"I didn't sleep with him" you said and she gave you an incredulous look "Alec," you said exasperated "I thought is better to let that out in the open, nothing happened, so he is safe on that end... and I have no intention of talking to a lawyer so you can rest" you said and her expression softened a little "where is he?" You couldn't help but ask.
"Alone in his house, probably wondering why did he trusted you" she spat at you "4 and a half minutes"
"Fine, I don't remember anything of this, ok? Completely blank, but I'm not an idiot I know how that sounds, and I won't play the victim, I will confess, to what is here to whatever agent Harford needs to put Charlie on jail, and me if I have to"
"And how are you so sure about Langford being guilty?" She asked.
"Because I remember now, the day I found him like this" you said pointing at the picture, I took the bus home and Charles was there, he put him there" you said since the images were flowing back to your mind, and you remembered, "I start screaming for help when I saw him, he said something about this being what I wanted, what I asked him to do all the time, and I fight him to run away and then I just remember his hand in my neck and the taste of something bitter he force down my throat and before everything went black again I saw him put my ring on his hand" you said and Ellie's eyes opened up drastically.
"The broken ring?" She said quietly.
"Yes, the next thing I remember was being in the front door reading Jonathan's letter, getting inside and freaking out over his body" you said very aware of how unrealistic all that sounded but she had to listen to you "He posted all this crap, but nothing about the parking lot, and I'm sure I fight that time, and this person that I don't remember is willing, drunk or drugged with a split personality or whatever, but she appeared to be ok with what is happening, then why will I need to scream, and run and fight on that car? What was different then, why did he needed to make a show out of Jonathan's dead, if he was so sure I wanted this, why did he have to make it all this big?" you said aware of the way that sounded but for some reason something on her eyes said she might believe you.
"I have no interest in understanding the train of thought of a lunatic" She Miller said trying to hide her own concerns "What is your point?"
"You are bsolutely right, but this was post right after we..." start dating? That sounded childish, we kiss? Sure Y/N rub it on her face "All I can think is that this is not over, and I can't let whatever else is coming affect Alec, so I'll confess so this ends quickly, but I need you to make sure he doesn't get dragged into this, I can't have that on me"
"Your time is up" she said and put out the note pad where you should write the declaration, completely ignoring your words.
"Ok, where should I start?" You said resigned.
"You are really going to confess?" She asked surprised and didn't turn the device on yet "why? If you really think there is more to it than the evidence, then why?"
"No matter how, I'm responsible for his dead, I might as well start paying, also this way I can make sure Alec's reputation and Ashley's life doesn't get more damaged for my mistakes" you said firmly.
"You really care about him huh?" She said and gave you a half smile. "I think I know exactly where you should start" she said and started writing instructions on the notepad, before you start speaking.

Mark the day, July 3rd!!
I'm incredibly sad that there is no Disney + in my country, and my respect for him will keep me from watching it as I watched the Mandalorian, but this masterpiece will be out and even if it takes another year, I'm willing to wait for it.

Chapter 17: Disappointment
"Guilty people are always calm, innocent protest and scream they didn't do it, so maybe he actually didn't?" Derek said looking at the man in the interrogation room who was walking in circles with his head on his hands crying desperate tears, and denying over and over again, looking at the pictures of the gruesome murder of his best friend.
"Innocent people don't screw their best mate's fiance and denied it to the police" Miller said with a bitter tone, putting an special disgust in the word fiance, and Ramos knew to stop talking, he was exited to be in the interrogation with her, but the reasons behind it were terrible.
He expected that in the end detective Hardy could save some of his reputation or at least his job, Derek considered the man a role model in the force, and him being thrown off the case that way had put an asterisk on him and Harford figuring the case out.
Katie was now in the other room talking to the teacher, after all went down she have offered to scort Hardy to his house when he start losing his breath and throwing fist against the evidence they found and he drove them there. Fortunately the chief was nowhere near and they three were the only ones present there. Ramos will remain silent about it, and he was sure Katie would too, but the way Miller coldly told him to get out of the station made him fear that she might talk to the chief later. He had brought the woman back to the station, he would have objected to DI Hardy making the arrest but Katie gave him a look that meant "Let him" and Derek could swear he had never seen someone with a more vacant and sad look on his eyes as the detective told her she had to go to the station as a suspect, but she definitely look worse once she walked outside his house, and it make it even harder to believe that such a frail and innocuous creature could be capable of such things... but she was, and he had listened to the tapes and bloody hell he had seen her talking about killing Jonathan with a smile on her face, she might no have use her hands to kill him but he died because of her and Ramos was convinced of it.
And once she was in custody Miller avoided contact with her and focus on Charlie, and Derek wonder once again if the rumors were true, Alec little outburst had confirmed what he already knew, that he was compromised and possibly involved with the suspect, but the idea of Miller and Hardy having and affair until the now murder suspect got in the middle? He was not so sure, but surely Ellie had acted strangely around them. It took 3 days for him and Katie to gather the evidence against Charles Langford and on that time Y/L/N brought Hardy lunch once, nothing out of the ordinary there, since she was ruled out as a suspect and was living on his house for safety, but Miller had a very conflicted look on her face and seem to disapprove the action. Later that day she change the usual patrol on Hardy's house for him and some bloke that had just start in the force, and it was a fortune the guy fall asleep early of he might have seen Hardy and Y/N dancing on the living room holding each other, something that he was convinced he'll took to his grave, unless of course they went to trial, but then again. Did he really love his job that much? The only he actually enjoyed was a pint with the guys on fridays and a pair of certain eyes rolling when he said something stupid.
"Do you maintain sexual intercourse with Y/N Y/L/N?" Miller asked again once they were sitting in front of Charles, and Derek stop cold on his thoughts since he was at work and had to focus.
"No... I mean yes, we did it" the man said but his doubt seemed calculated, like he knew they were judging his body language more than his words and Derek understood why Miller was convinced of him being guilty.
"Mr. Langford the first time we saw you, you denied having a relationship with miss Y/L/N other than a friendship, would you care to explain why?" She said, and once again he looked at them with the clarity of someone who knows way more that he says but became coy immediately after.
"I mean you told me Jonathan died, I knew how it will look, I didn't... look I didn't do that" he said pointing at the corpse in the middle of the floor of the cottage, "I shag her because he was being a moron, and left her alone all the time, but then it became something more, I thought she loved me ok? I fucking love her... but I didn't do it, I swear I never wanted to hurt Jonathan." He said and put his hands on his head again.
"Then why did you post it?" Derek intervene and Miller seem please with his approach. "He showed him at least five screenshots of amateur phonographic videos, and his user registration on the website.
Ramos still couldn't believe that something that ridiculous had been the key to catch him, he had been the last three afternoons at Katie's house going trough all of Langford's medical record, a lot of bar fights that end on stitches, a broken nose, etc. And some misdemeanors on his criminal record, mainly angry girlfriends who choose to drop charges after some of the old officers talk to them, and some teen vandalism against one of his friends motorcycle, and possession of marijuana, the whole picture of a proud Broadchurch son.
The guy was an arse, but nothing there prove that he would murder his mate or rape the teacher. He was enjoying his time with Katie tough, but it all felt like a waste of time, until one of his old uni friends sent him an email. They always taunt him for choosing to stay in the small town and don't find a better job in the city, so he open it assuming it was something like that.
"Broadchurch babes are HOT" The subject said, and there it was the teacher's face in a very compromising position with the man they were investigating.
A quick embarrassing search on the profile of the site and they got all they needed to dismiss the rape allegations and arrest both of them for the murder, now they just need him to confess.
"Oh for fuck sake what now?" Miller said listening an outburst in the hallway.
"I demand you to let me see her!" A beautiful woman was arguing with an officer and trough an open door Y/N raised her head but quickly look down when Miller gave her a cold glare.
"You, you heartless cunt!!" Ashley Langford managed to pass the guards and enter the room where Y/N was, and slapped her across the face before Katie could intervene "I hope they throw you in the darkest pit they can find, Jonathan loved you, we loved you, why did you have to drag my brother with you? Whore! I'm glad your parents are dead so they can't see the disappointment you turn out to be!" She spit on her face and the other woman didn't intend to defend herself, the officers took her out and Katie looked at her with a curious expression that he had learned to know pretty well by now, something was off.
"I will talk to Miss Langford" Miller said following the woman, "Well take a break with the other guy, help Harford" and exit the room.
As Katie filled him in on with the little progress she had made on the suspect and look at her vacant expression he got an idea on what could make her talk.

ATTENTION: Hi! I want to make a little announcement here, I'm about to finish this story, I have a draft of the last three chapters and I'm polishing them so they make sense, but I may take longer than expected, how are you guys? Are you safe? I'm still working on my small town in the middle of the pandemic, and I have 12 hours shifts seeing patients so I have little to no time to write, but it has become a good distraction from all the horror in my day to day life, so I'm sorry if I left you hanging, specially since this is a sad and very confusing chapter, I hope you enjoy it, and please if possible stay at home, you have no idea how important it is. Stay safe, I can't wait for this to end so we can go back to our normal lifes. Lots of love from Mexico.
Sincerely, a very tired doctor.

Blood, tears and sea breeze
Warnings: ANGST, mental health issues, graphic depictions of violence, blood, cursing, mentions of sexual assault, mentions of sex, substance abuse.
Summary: The not so peaceful town of Broadchurch face dead again, while Alec Hardy continues his journey to redemption will this school teacher be the key to solve the mystery or just another victim of the ever watching evilness that seems to reside in the town.
Notes: My OC Derek Ramos is basically Anthony Ramos (Hamilton) I love him, he is cute and sexy and so freaking talented, and I frankly just wanted to write a story about him, but the In the Heights movie won't be happening any time soon, so I settled for this.
First Previous Next
Chapter 16: Inappropriate
Common sense and logical thinking, as Doctor Florence used to say when you were just a kid, whenever you felt ike you were losing control you needed to found the logical thing to do, and that would calm your anxiety before you have an episode, and usually it worked, most of the time anyway.
What was the logical thing to do now? None of the actions you have been taking the last weeks were logical, and common sense was urging you to stand up and run away from him, but the soft touch of his hands on the small of your back and the warm breath of his mouth were proving to be more calming than any rational thinking.
His lips felt soft on yours and maybe also scared, but he had no hesitation and you have seen the quiet need in his eyes, and you could almost cry since this was the first time in weeks since someone had kissed you, and sadly the first time in months since someone had that actual desire and need on his eyes before kissing you, he doubted for a second the moment you start returning the kiss with the hunger and longing for physical contact that had been denied to you; but he kept you close to him enough for you to feel his heart beating hard and fast on his chest, and you were desperate to know how would it feel under his shirt.
His touch became tighter on your waist and your body was moving on it's own trying to climb on his lap obeying some muscular memory on how familiar it felt, not like they were similar in any way, but he gave you the safe feeling He used to provoke on you, and you finally open your eyes... for a moment you were convinced that a pair of playful blue eyes will receive you with a cheeky grin, but instead there were those sad brown eyes darkened with desire, and logical thinking choose the worst possible moment to start working again.
You broke contact immediately, and felt a little hurt that he didn't tried to stop you when you muttered a little "I'm sorry" and run straight to his room closing thee door behind you and finally letting the tears consume you.
Jonathan's memory deserved better than this reckless and selfish behavior, and Detective Hardy deserved a free woman, free from all the horrors in your past, free from a dead fiance whom you still loved deeply, and free from all the problems you tended to cause. Also you were not entirely sure but it seems like he and Detective Miller had a thing going, and you would never get in between two people, it was a harmful and indecent thing to do specially to people who were as nice and considerate as them.
You could hear him pacing on the hallway outside the door and you wanted to get outside and tell him how much you really wanted to kiss him and maybe more, but you were broken at the moment and how bad idea it was, you wanted to tell him desperately how much you enjoyed kissing him, how his lips bring you back to life and how for a moment all the sadness disappeared, and how much you appreciate all the things he have done for you, and how you bring sadness and trouble to anyone around you so you have to walk away from him before you drag him to your darkness and ruin his life.
Because for god sake Y/N! Your mind told you once he stopped and turned off the light of the hallway, you were a fucking witness/ suspect on a murder case, his bloody career will be in the trash if someone knew that he did as much as looking at you as something more.
No, this was better, you could hide there at least until he left for work the next day and after that... well you will figure it out once the sun were up. You sitted on the bed trying to take Jonathan's disappointed and hurt face away from your thoughts, but two hours later when Daze entered the house you were still awake, ot wasn't until after 4:00 am that the fatigue defeated you and finally closed your eyes.
***
Olly Stevens was waiting outside Ashley Langford's La Boheme deli, holding a tray with two cups of coffee, and saw detective Harford approach him in civilian clothes she pointed to an empty table in the terrace and he followed her.
"Detective, you look as gorgeous as usual, may I offer you a coffee" He said again with exaggerate reverence but before the woman could roll her eyes at him a strong hand took the tray off his hand and gave Harford one of the drinks and took the other for him.
"Oh that's really considerate from you sir" a handsome man with short curly hair and sweet and compassionate eyes sitted next to Katie and offered him his hand. "I'm DC Ramos, you can call me Derek"
"Hi Detective, I'm Olly Stevens, I'm the Broadchurch Eco editor, how can I help you?" Harford smile to his inside since Stevens would act professionally now that other man was in the scene, I was completely ridiculous and insulting, but she had to admit that Ramos had potential and she secretly wanted to spend some more time with him.
"Did you found what I asked you?" She said once he put out a couple folders.
"It wasn't easy, I had to promise a janitor a two page story on how unfair their working conditions are" he said giving her what seemed to be photocopies of a C. Langford medical record.
"And they don't have unfair working conditions?" Harford asked.
"They do, but that doesn't sell newspapers" he said and have her a wink that was received by a dead glare. "Anyway here are the old newspapers you asked for" He said giving a voluminous binder that detective Ramos took. "Now what can you tell me about Jonathan Norbury's case, anything interesting?"
"Absolutely nothing, but we appreciate your collaboration, and once we have something that would sell newspapers you'll be the first to know" Detective Ramos said with a bright smile and Olly couldn't hide the disappointment on his face and after some more small talk he left them alone.
"Did you get the old records that I asked you?" She said once they were on her car.
"I did, they are not digital so is a lot of paperwork he said pointing at a voluminous box in the back "Is gonna take us forever Katie"
"Us? They are not paying us for this you know? I mean you don't have to be here" she said and his eyes went sad for a second and she feared he felt unwelcome when she was actually delighted that he wanted to help.
"Well I know that the files came from a shady reporter, I can't leave you alone now" He said hopefully and she put a serious face for a moment.
"Fine, but I can't take work home, my apartment is tiny and they are renovating the ceiling so is a lot of noise"
"Well you can come to my place, I mean if you want to" he said nervously, and she found him endearing.
"Sure, we can order take out if this gets too long" He smiled with that happiness that reach his eyes and gave her the address so they would start search on Charles Langford's past.
***
"I'm going to beat that bastard" Father Coats said loudly causing a few of the penitent in the church to look at the confession booth.
"Seal of confession father" You said and you could guess the way he was brushing his hair to the back of his head as he used to when he was nervous or angry, or in this case both.
"That only works if I didn't knew who you are" He said sarcastically, since he would have recognized your voice in any place.
"Well then pretend you don't, or better yet, talk to me as my friend" you said to him in the stubborn tone you knew drive him insane.
"If this was a talk among friends I could actually have a word with detective Hardy" He said and you rolled your eyes angry because he was right.
"Well then father, tell me if I'm burning in hell for being a loose woman" you said after a while.
"No more than him" He started and you knew he was joking, was that allowed? For him to make jokes in there? "I can only absolve you if you feel repented, but something tells me you don't, and if that is the case I think there is not such thing as a sin, is terribly inappropriate, and I'm sure if you choose to continue with this you would be jeopardizing Jonathan's murder investigation" He said after thinking throughly the situation.
"Well we wouldn't be the only ones misbehaving right?" You said and you could swear you felt the color rising to his face.
"We are not discussing my personal life here, and there is nothing happening there for your information" He said defensive, he finish with the confession and you follow him outside where Daze was helping some children arrange some flowers for the altar.
"It looks amazing Dasy" you said and she smiled, apparently she pretended to become a teacher eventually and she was searching for opportunities to be around children.
"Thanks Y/N my dad is coming to pick us, I text him we were here" she said and your plan to avoid him fall apart.
"DI Hardy" Father Coats said once he got inside the church.
"Paul" he said with a dry tone, he look sadder than usual and you felt guilty for it. "Are you ready?"
"Can I stay longer?"Dasy said and you wish she could read your mind so she won't left you alone with him, although you hope he would say no, but for your surprise he agreed.
You didn't have time to think when you were already walking towards his car, but before you get back to be reclusive in his room yo thought at least you owe him an explanation.
"Alec I..."
"Y/N I'm sorry..." you spoke at the same time and he immediately shut up when he heard his name on your lips, you haven't call him that yet, but he didn't seem mad. "Go ahead" he said and he stop walking next to the car.
"Can I drive?" You said after a moment and for all answer he gave you his keys and you climb on the driver's seat.
The drive was silent, but relaxing somehow, you had a place in mind to go, and you were sure he knew where were you going but he seemed uneasy once you start walking up towards Danny Latimer's cliff, your pants were now damp by the grass but you didn't care.
You finally reached the top and sited on the grass looking at the ocean, he looked at you concerned but eventually he sited next to you.
"What are you sorry for?" You said finally.
"Well my behavior last night was... " He started taking off guard by the question.
"Inappropriate?" You said remembering Paul words "Well is not like I didn't wanted you to kiss me" you said and you could see relief in his face, and suddenly it was clear, he wasn't mad with you for running away but with himself for making advances on you. "He proposed here you know?" You said fighting the tears and trying to search for the right words to explain yourself.
"Did he?" He said with a cautious tone.
"Yeah, he hated being outdoors, city boy you know?" You laughed remembering Jonathan tired face when you reached the top and he finally put down the picking basket on the floor, and the pain start pressuring your chest "He bring me here because he knew I love this place"
"It's quite nice" he said and offered you a handkerchief.
"Thanks" you took it and clean your eyes smearing some lipstick on the fabric. "I keep thinking about how manny weeks are until our wedding day" You said and he looked confused "I keep questioning me if things had been different... I want to believe that if things had been different I would have ask you your name in one of your appointments with Dr. Florence, and maybe... I don't know maybe I would have postponed my wedding because I was not sure anymore..." you said elaborating the childish dreams and ideas that you told yourself to justify your actions.
"I'm sure you wouldn't have postponed it" he said not understanding where you wanted to go with this.
"Or maybe I would have married him anyway and eventually I would have cheated him with you" You said bitterly "Not like what I did was much different"
"You didn't cheat on him" He said vehemently and he didn't need to elaborate because you could imagine that by now he must know more about Jonathan life than you.
"We hadn't have sex in months and I felt like he was repulsed by me in the end... I'm not justifying him, but that's the truth, I thought that it was wedding nerves, but I was to naive apparently, you must know of course if he cheated on me" you said.
"You know I can't discuss deatails of the case..."He said but that was all the confirmation you needed.
"I know that, and if he was it doesn't make right what I did, I was just not ready to have feelings for someone else so soon, and I feel like by having them I somehow love him less... I should be the one apologizing because I wanted you to kiss me and more..."
"You don't have to apologize, I shouldn't have act upon my feelings, but I'm glad you are not offended by them" he said and you gave him a small smile.
"Why would I? You are a handsome wonderful man, and if I'm honest I feel more free next to you than I have in the last five months of my life, I just wish that maybe the timing had been different"
"I would have asked you your name" he said after a while and you nodded, it was so peaceful up there. "Maybe several months after we met, maybe too late for anything to happen"
"Now what?" You asked standing up after him.
"We go back, and we pretend this didn't happen" he said, and you agreed, logical thinking "and maybe when this over..." he started with hope in his eyes.
"Alec, could you be honest with me?" He nodded as a response "Do you think I did it?"
"I don't" he said, it wasn't a emotional declaration, it was just a fact for him, he was completely sure you didn't do it.
You look straight into his eyes and evaluate the situation, he was right that was the logical, rational, and correct thing to do, but...
"I don't want to be too late" You said and you kissed him, waiting that maybe he would be rational and reject you, but he closed his arms around your back and kissed you with the same intensity of the night before or maybe more, both of you knew this was dangerous, reckless, irresponsible and completely inappropriate, but you couldn't care less.
