How To Get Ahead
A trend piece I keep seeing is that Brooklyn is no longer the Brooklyn that made Brooklyn so Brooklyn and why don't you just move to a different shitty neighborhood and wait for it to become Brooklyn because I guess we're all just chasing Brooklyns through life and if we ever catch one then we can say we have lived and can finally start something distinguished and trendy, like a magazine that's just pictures of beets on tables.

J.W. Waterhouse: Penelope and Her Suitors
So, let's talk about the Waterhouse woman this season:
We started from this idea of Penelope's fury. You know, there are suitors at the door, there's this dog about to die, and like, WHERE is Odysseus? So she's really dealing with an onslaught, but she's also a queen--she has a son, she's still got a glow in kind of a juice-cleanse meets up-all-night-at-the-loom kind of thing. Like, proto-spinning.
So there's a grown woman dewiness here in the cheekbones. Ruddy. Flushed. We're keeping the nails clean and mature and just blotting the pads of the fingers with blush for the loom-roughened feel. Hair is swept back to a low bun at the nape. Not quite wash and wear because hello, she's a queen. Also, some of the models will be carrying these handmade foot bowls, because we're definitely influenced by the Xenia ethos.

Had a quick meltdown on Twitter this morning.
So. This article. http://t.co/qQPpSjdDnu

"If a woman wants to do substantive work…she’s going to be criticized—w/comments not just about her work but also about herself"
— Dance, Magic Dance (@thetanyebest)
October 7, 2014
SOLUTION?!? "She must develop a way of experiencing criticism that allows her to persevere in the face of it."
— Dance, Magic Dance (@thetanyebest)
October 7, 2014
SHOCKER. "…And yet, many women don’t have that tool kit."

OTHER PARTS OF THE SYSTEM NEED NOT BE FIXED, I SUPPOSE:
— Dance, Magic Dance (@thetanyebest)
October 7, 2014
"Across 248 reviews from 28 companies, managers, whether male or female, gave female employees more negative feedback…"
— Dance, Magic Dance (@thetanyebest)
October 7, 2014
"76 percent of the negative feedback given to women included some kind of personality criticism…"
— Dance, Magic Dance (@thetanyebest)
October 7, 2014
"…such as comments that the woman was “abrasive,” “judgmental” or “strident.”
— Dance, Magic Dance (@thetanyebest)

Ultimately though, best to adjust to a broken system that demands constant "likeability" than to shine a light on latent prejudice.

Per the review for another recent collection, Getty has “a desire to create pieces that don’t look absurd ‘doing drop-off’ but can also work beautifully at ‘some benefit luncheon or cocktail party’”
At which point I wonder if I’m missing the scads of women who are ‘doing drop off’ dressed like the moor-dwelling monochromatic iconoclast I fantasize about being mistaken for. Or are we talking about a different type of ‘drop off’? Are we not depositing wee Millinaine at her pre-pre-K yoga?
Are we actually dropping off chicken livers with our rune specialist? Dropping off rare scrolls with an antiquarian coke dealer who listens exclusively to Enya? Or just dropping ourselves off at the juncture of a sparely upholstered sectional while we try to remember which jute espadrilles went best with our blush lace tap shorts?
Just trying to get a hang of when I’m going to start seeing anyone in this hyper-luxe priestess garb that by its price point alone seems destined for people more at home in ruthless sheath dresses.

When I was lazy, I used to practice my violin plucking the strings instead of bowing--pizzicato. One of many reasons I'm not an impressive violinist right now.
However, I always thought pizzicato was under-used.

'I always end up looking a little freaky, even a little ugly, especially at night. That way, only other weirdos talk to you, so it sort of helps weed out boring people.'
I ended up reading this the way you drink when you're doing that bad idea thing of playing "catch up" with people. Reading in big swallows, enjoying the burn as I process recommendations. Pore over links to Ellis Faas and Le Metier de Beaute.
"In a perfect world, I’d just go to the hairdresser every week for a wet set and sit under the bonnets and come out with huge curls."

Who is the Wyeth woman this season? Well, she's natural, you know--she's got this center part, she's direct, she knows who she is and maybe sometimes she's wearing, like, a turtleneck because she understands you've got to stay warm in the city but she's not ever conforming, you know? It's kind of that 'weekend away in the country' vibe we're getting. There are wisps, it's edgy, it's natural, we're feeling fun, but contemplative. We're really taking away the brow and giving the lips a little bump in the center. Just that hit of color that says fresh air, that says LIFE, but we're keeping it subtle, we're keeping it contemplative, we're keeping it 1977 but also 2016.

Kendrick Lamar drawling: "You wanna see a dead body?" is one of my favorite musical moments of 2013. There's a kinetic quality to excellent verse. Plenty of playpen space in the early lines, the changes in rhyme pattern standing out like braille.

I'm pretty into Timber Timbre these days.
It's sort of like if Nosferatu got extra-depressed in the 50s and started a band that played slow dances at prom. Which is the essence of a winter that won't end, by the way.
