More Than Our Scars - Florence Italy
Tumblr media
Series Masterlist
It's been a while since I wrote for these two. They're my favorite couple. Murder Boyfriend & his Brave Girl. 💕
The culinary course that Billy enrolled you in is so challenging yet so rewarding. This was your dream and the amazing thing is now you have Billy by your side to share the experience. You thought champions & heroes only belonged in fairytales and comic books, but you found one of your very own. Not only did he save you from The Kingpin, but he also taught you how to love again. He built up your confidence and made you believe in your dreams. He adores you, his brave girl.
Billy found the most charming apartment with views of the Duomo, the 3rd largest church in the world. It's not a luxury apartment like his loft back in Manhattan. It's charming & quaint & old world. Turning into the courtyard, it's a 3 story walk-up that you don't mind at all. Letting yourself into your home, you dump your keys on the entry table. Hanging up your jacket, you make your way to the kitchen, to place your bag on the counter & go in search of Billy. "Billy? I'm home."
"Hey, babe!" Dressed casually in a dark green sweater & jeans, Billy walks out of the room he set up as his remote office. He envelopes you in his arms & drops a kiss on your lips. "How was your day?"
"Good!" Squeezing him around the waist, "better now that i'm home.
Billy walks you backwards to the kitchen, stopping by the bags, "What have you brought me to eat?" Letting you go, he rummages through the bag. Whatever you learned to cook that day, you brought home for Billy's lunch for the following day. He always looks forward to it.
"Cacio e pepe."
"Nice! Thank you." Cracking the lid of the container, he smells it & puts it in the fridge. "That's going to be good." Turning back around to you, "What do you want to do tonight? Want to wander?"
"Sure! Let me get changed." To change into something warmer. March evenings are still chilly in Florence. Matching Billy with a sweater & jeans, you apply some lip gloss & re-braid your hair, you're ready to go.
"All set?" You excitedly nod. Bill helps you on with you jacket & you leave to go exploring. Hand in hand, you make your way out to the cobblestone path. You've visit marketplaces in the neighborhood, grabbing fresh produce, bread, cheese...and an abundance of wine. It's such a great feeling to be out in public. You were kept prisoner by Kingpin for 3 years and spent months in hiding with Billy while he plotted your freedom. You had a small taste of freedom when you and Billy spent a couple days in Beacon, NY after James Wesley's murder. But this. This was amazing! Now you're in Florence strolling through markets, fingers entwined with Billy's, living the life you only dreamed of.
*****
The sky starts to darken on your way back home, as you pass Osteria del Flore, Billy's new favorite restaurant. "Do you want to stop for dinner?"
"Bill, we just bought a bunch of groceries"
Wrapping his arm around your shoulders & leaning down to press kisses into your neck, "But you've been cooking all day. Do you really want to cook again?" Billy already starts steering your towards their doorway, even before you can get an answer out.
"Signore Russo. Signora. Bentornato (welcome back)." The hostess greets you upon arrival & leads you to a table. The food has been incredible since you got to Italy. Billy jokes about the weight you guys will be gaining. It's almost sacrilege to have anything but wine while in Italy, but the beer selection here is excellent. Bill is so American. So New York. He wants his steak & a beer. You can't help but give him a besotted smile. You like seeing him so relaxed and happy. You both suffered so much, you deserved this blissfulness.
*****
Full bellied & a little tipsy, Bill's arm is thrown around your shoulders. Your fingers intertwined with his. Leaning into his side, you make your way back home. "Once your classes end & we return stateside, what do you want to do?
"What do you mean? I'll look for a job. I can't keep mooching off you."
"Shut up!" Curling his arm, bringing you closer so he can kiss the top of your head. "Where do you want to work?"
"I haven't thought that far yet. I'm concentrating on doing well here." Mulling it over, "I guess it depends on whoever hires me, that's where I'll go," you shrug.
"I'll make sure you have a driver available to take you to & from work."
"What?! I can get myself to & from work."
"Remember the last time you walked home from work?? You're getting a driver." The last time you walked home, Kingpin's men snatched you off the streets.
You whisper a soft, "thank you."
"What about private chef?"
"Those are long hours. Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner? I'll never see you." You hear a low growl, which makes you smile.
"Or maybe I can buy you a restaurant."
"Are you crazy? No, Bill." You stop in the middle of the sidewalk, letting go of Bill's hand. "I'm serious."
Bill laughs, hitching the tote full of wine & groceries over his shoulder. "You can be your own boss. Make your own hours. Have plenty of time to spend with me." He tugs your braid, wrapping it around his fist, pulling you closer to him, to capture your mouth in a kiss. He only stop when he hears a soft whine escape you. "Don't you like the sound of that, sweetheart?"
Burying your face at the base of his throat, inhaling the smell of him, "I know nothing of running my own business. I'm still learning to be a chef."
Wrapping you in his arms and swaying with you in the moonlight, he dances you into the courtyard. The unevenness of the cobblestones makes you clumsy, but Billy doesn't let you fall or falter. "One day when you're ready, I'll help make it happen."
Laughing, "You spoil me."
"Anything for you, my brave girl."

Bucky wants his best friends to get to know his girlfriend but a little voice makes him worry that there may be more going on between you and Steve.
Word count: 2.5k
Warning: miscommunications and Bucky Barnes being a colossal idiot (theme of this whole story)
Tumblr media
Steve and Bucky walked down the corridor towards the large living room with the massive television screen. Their arms laden with drinks and snacks for themselves, you and Priya. Bucky wanted his best friends to get to know his girlfriend better and you'd begrudgingly agreed to a movie night, comforted by the knowledge that Steve would be present as a buffer for awkward questions.
Steve was smiling softly, happy to be able to relax with the people he cared most about without being interrupted to save the world. His self imposed responsibilities weighed heavily on his mind. Distractions where he could be Steve and not Captain America were hard to find. One of the things he loved about you and Bucky was that you both were his voice of reason, between the two of you, you would argue different sides of a point, until he was happy with the decision he had made. This was why seeing the two of you as a team made him so happy.
You had made yourself comfortable on yours and Bucky's favorite couch. It was just big enough for you and the beefy super soldier and in your mind, you imagined yourself and Bucky being comfortable under a throw blanket while you watched the movie. Your day dream was shattered as Priya dropped into the seat beside you.
"Oh gosh, this is so comfortable! Such a cuddle couch." She elbowed your side gently. "Hey, you think Bucky and I could sit here for the movie?"
It took every inch of your self control to stop a scowl from marring your features. "Sorry to be all Sheldon about this, but this is kinda my spot."
"Oh, yeah, I get it." She didn't, looking at you like she was indulging one of her young patients who was throwing a tantrum. “Do you mind if I sit until Jamie and Steve get back?”
"Sure." You tried to keep the sarcasm to a minimum. You had to play nice, for Bucky's sake.
"Hey Cricket, can I ask you something?" Priya’s voice was slightly hesitant.
"Course. What is it?" You replied. But you had a strong feeling you weren’t going to like what she was going to ask you and steeled yourself for it.
"Do you and Jamie have any history of being more than… just friends?"
"No." You suppressed a sigh. You had expected an annoying comment, as opposed to something that would break your heart all over again. "No, just friends. Why’d you ask?" You felt suspicious of her line of questioning.
"Oh, I was just curious. I know you're not his type and all, so I wasn't very worried about it, but I figured there's always a possibility." She shrugged.
"Bucky and I have never been anything more than friends." You confirmed through gritted teeth, and it was killing you.
"Okay," Priya smiled happily. "That makes me feel better. I really like him, and I just wanted to make sure there weren't any lingering feelings between you two."
"I'm happy for you," you lied through a smile.
"Thanks, Cricket. I appreciate that. And I'm glad we had this conversation, it's always good to clear the air."
"Absolutely."
"Thanks for being so understanding. You're a great friend, I’m glad that James and I have you."
Steve and Bucky as they paused momentarily, not wanting to interrupt your conversation, but at the same time, curious about what you were saying. They both felt a little awkward for eavesdropping but they didn’t feel comfortable making their presence known. Steve glanced over at Bucky, wondering what his reaction would be, but Bucky’s face was bathed in darkness and impossible to read.
When Priya said she was glad to have you as a friend, Steve nudged him gently. "Come on," he jerked his head, urging Bucky to follow. He walked into the lounge and deposited the snacks on the table in front of you and Priya.
"Thanks, Steve!" you reached forwards to grab a bowl of popcorn, but Bucky was blocking you. You swatted his legs playfully. "Buck! What’re you doing?"
"Cricket, can you move over a bit so I can sit with Priya?" Bucky looked at you with wide eyes and pouty lips. How could you say no?
Reluctantly, you got off the couch, Bucky giving you a questioning frown as you did so. You shuffled over and settled in next to Steve, feeling a stab of disappointment that Bucky had chosen to sit with Priya instead of you.
"Did you ladies pick a movie?" Steve asked.
You shook your head, but Priya volunteered a suggestion in a heartbeat. "You've Got Mail!"
Steve pulled up the film from Tony’s endless supply of media and hit play. As the movie started, you tried to focus on the screen, but your eyes kept gazing over to Priya and Bucky and how his arm was draped cozily over her shoulder. Your mind kept wandering back to the conversation you just had with Priya. You couldn’t help but wish that there had been more between you and your best friend. What made her think that you weren’t his type? You bristled at the thought. Bucky had never expressed his preferences to a woman’s appearance. Had he mentioned something to her?
Steve noticed your distraction and leaned over to whisper in your ear. "Are you okay?"
You nodded, trying to push aside your feelings of jealousy and insecurity. "I’m fine," you whispered back. "Just a little tired."
Steve gave you a knowing look, but didn’t press the issue. Instead he wrapped an arm around your shoulders, offering you comfort and support. As the movie played on, you found yourself leaning into Steve’s side, feeling safe and protected in his presence. You couldn’t help but wonder what could have been if things had been different between you and Bucky.
As you and Steve turned back to the movie, Priya leaned towards Bucky and whispered to him conspiratorially. "I think Cricket and Steve make such a cute couple, don't you think? They looked so cozy on their Coney Island date!"
Bucky looked down at her with surprise. It wasn’t as though he hadn’t feared that you and Steve might be more than friends, but it shocked him that other people considered it. As long as he was the only one to think it, he could have lived in denial, but having someone else voice it with such confidence made his skin crawl.
"Um, I don't know. They seem to get along well as friends."
"Oh come on, Jamie. I can see the way they look at each other. We should totally set them up! I mean look how he has his arm around her!"
Bucky hummed with hesitation. "I don't think that's a good idea, Priya."
"Why not? They would be perfect together!"
"I just...I don't think it's the right time for them to start dating." Bucky answered, not avoiding eye contact, his eyes glued to Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan.
Priya was starting to sense that something was off. "Jamie, is there something you're not telling me?"
"Look, Steve doesn’t really talk to people about this, but he had a girl, back in the 40s, Peggy. He isn’t over her. It wouldn’t be fair to either of them to enter a relationship when Steve still has feelings for Peggy." Bucky winced internally, hating himself for using Steve’s past to cover for himself.
"Wow, I had no idea," Priya said softly, her eyes widening in surprise. "That must be really tough for him."
Bucky nodded, feeling a pang of guilt for using Steve’s past as an excuse. "Yeah, it’s been hard for him. He’s never really gotten over her."
Priya looked thoughtful for a moment before turning back to Bucky. "Well, I’m glad you told me. I wouldn’t want to cause any unnecessary drama. They're lucky to have you looking out for them."
Bucky gave her a terse smile, grateful that she understood. "No problem. I just want what’s best for both of them."
As the movie came to an end, you and Steve exchanged a look, both of you feeling a sense of contentment and comfort in each other’s presence. Despite the awkwardness and tension that had filled the room earlier, you were grateful for the friendship and support that you had in each other. Unfortunately for the two of you, your closeness did nothing to assuage the envy that burned deep inside Bucky.
As everyone got up to leave, Priya turned to you and Steve with a smile. "Thanks for the movie night, guys. I had a great time."
You and Steve both nodded, returning her smile. "Anytime," you said, feeling a sense of relief that the night had gone smoothly.
As you and Steve walked out of the living room together, you couldn’t help but feel a sense of gratitude for having him by your side. Maybe things weren’t meant to be with Bucky, but you knew that you had a true friend in Steve, someone who would always be there for you no matter what.
On the other hand, Bucky went to bed that night with Priya’s words burned on the back of his brain. Why did she think that there might have been something between him and you? She had worsened his fears about you and Steve. Would his oldest friend really betray his trust that way? Surely you would have mentioned that to him, wouldn’t you? The tiny voice in his head that sounded just like you, asked him why he would assume such a thing, since he had hidden his relationship for so long.
*
Your voice of conscience in his mind did nothing to mitigate his turbulent thoughts. In fact they swirled around his brain until he found himself confronting you about them. This was becoming too common an occurrence. He blurted out the words while he found you training in the gym.
"You went to Coney Island with Steve." He tried to sound nonchalant as he spotted you with your weights.
You grunted your response, trying to stand up with the heavy weight balanced across your shoulders. Eyes screwed shut with the effort of pushing your knees apart to push yourself upright. You panted slightly, trying to recover your composure, but Bucky wasn’t ready to give up on his point.
"Why didn’t you tell me you were going?"
"Oh, I’m sorry," you attempted a shrug before going back into a squat. "It was Steve’s idea and honestly, I didn’t think it was a big deal since you were busy with Priya."
"It is a big deal! We promised we'd go together."
Your face dropped slightly as you stood up, remembering the promise you’d made almost a year ago. Things had been so chaotic and you’d forgotten about it. You put the barbell back on the rack before replying. "I know, and I was really looking forward to it." There was a sadness in your tone that you couldn’t hide. "But when you started dating Priya, I thought things had changed. I didn’t think you’d care."
"That doesn’t mean we can’t still hang out. You’re my best friend, too." Bucky leaned against the rack, as you busied yourself with unloading the bar.
"I know, and I’m sorry." You hid your face as you answered. "I just felt left out when you didn’t tell me about Priya."
"I’m sorry, I know I should’ve told you. But seeing you at Coney Island with Steve really hurt."
"Wait," you spun around with surprise. "You saw me at Coney Island?"
"Yeah…" Bucky’s anger abated slightly as he realized what he was saying to you.
You huffed. "You were there?"
Bucky had the decency to look ashamed.
"And you’re getting on my case? I mean Steve took me there as a surprise to cheer me up after I got sick. I didn’t decide to go there without you. And it’s not like Steve knew about our promise. What were you doing there, Bucky?"
Bucky sighed, running a hand through his hair. "I was there with Priya. We were on a date."
You felt a pang of jealousy and hurt, but you pushed it down but the aggression in your tone was unmistakable. "I see. Well, I’m sorry if I upset you by being there with Steve. But I'd like to point out that you didn't seem to have any issues going with Priya."
Bucky looked at you, his expression softening. "I’m sorry, Cricket. I should’ve told you about Priya - about Coney Island, about dating her. I didn’t want to hurt you. I just…"
You nodded, feeling a mix of emotions swirling inside you. "It’s okay, Bucky. Just…next time, can you please just be honest with me?"
"Yeah," Bucky nodded. "and hey, you'd tell me if you were, right? As in dating… someone."
"Yeah, I'll keep you apprised." You rolled your eyes and shook your head with a small laugh.
"Even if it was Steve?"
“Why do you keep asking me that? Are you trying to set me up with Steve? Because I don't have those kinds of feelings for him.”
“You don’t? Because Priya said-”
"Bucky, why don't you ask me about me instead of your girlfriend?" The irritation you'd felt about his indignation earlier rose inside you again, enough that you decided to walk away from it.
He caught up to you outside the gym, heart pounding in his chest. "Hey, Cricket," he called out, his voice filled with sincerity. "I’m sorry for how I acted back there. I was wrong, and I shouldn’t have let my jealousy get the best of me. Can we talk?"
You turned to face him, your expression guarded but curious. "What do you want to talk about, Bucky?"
Bucky took a deep breath, gathering his thoughts. "I want to apologize for not being upfront with you. I value our friendship, and I don’t want to lose that because of my own insecurities. I’m sorry for hurting you… and I want to make things right."
You studied him for a moment, your eyes searching his handsome face for sincerity. The way he looked back at you softened your resolve and after a moment, you nodded. “I appreciate your apology, Bucky. Let’s move past this and focus on our friendship.”
Bucky nodded, a small smile tugging at his lips, feeling a weight lift off his shoulders as he heard your words. "Of course. And hey, maybe we can still go to Coney Island together sometime. Just the two of us."
You smiled back, feeling a sense of relief wash over you. "I’d like that."
Bucky fell in step beside you, as you walked away from the gym, the tension between you slowly dissipating. He knew he had a lot of work to do to rebuild the trust between you, but he was willing to put in the effort. He was grateful for your forgiveness and determined to show you that he was a true friend, even if he couldn't have anything more.

Happy? Birthday
Avengers Bucky
Summary: Everyone at the compound forgets your birthday but one. Bucky hurries back from his mission so he can give you his gift.
Content warning: FLUFF, soft Bucky. I can't think of anything else...
Tumblr media
You had woken up extra early since today was your birthday. To say you were excited was an understatement.
You liked birthdays and was always supportive when anyone was celebrating one but today was special. This was going to be your first birthday as part of the team since you had arrived at the compound shortly after your birthday at the start of the year.
Everyone always had plans for their special days. Whether it was a BBQ pool party, a night out to a club with VIP service, or to a wild theme park with crazy rides, everyone always got to choose what they wanted to do on their day.
Since your birthday was in the wintertime, you were slightly limited to what you could do activity wise. You always hated your birthday in the wintertime since you felt like you had to do a lot of indoor activities because of the weather.
This time though, you were thinking of heading to the lake at the compound for some skating, a bonfire, and possibly roasting some wieners and marshmallows since the weather was decent out.
You made your way to the kitchen eager to tell everyone what you had planned when you noticed Sam and Nat sitting at the table talking.
Steve and Bucky were arriving back from their mission in the early afternoon, so you wanted to gather some supplies for the evening. Both Steve and Bucky were your close friends at the compound, Bucky more so than Steve as the two of you instantly hit it off right from the beginning.
It must have been the sassy insult you threw Sam's way on your first day that made Bucky take notice of you as Steve told you that was the loudest he has heard Bucky laugh since the 40's. Nat told you numerous times Bucky had a crush on you, but you always scoffed at her and rolled your eyes.
"Morning guys" you smiled widely at them like an idiot.
"Morning" they both grumbled into their mugs of coffee.
You stood there staring at them a little seeing if they were going to wish you a Happy Birthday, but they didn't say anything.
"You ok Y/N?" Sam asked.
You stood there staring at them trying telepathically to remind them it was your birthday, but it didn't work. You just smiled at Sam and nodded.
You watched Sam get up from his spot and announce he was heading to visit his sister and was going to be away for a few days. He patted your arm and left the kitchen while Nat got up and put her cup in the dishwasher.
You smiled at her thinking your good friend would have remembered your birthday, but she walked past you and announced she was going to DC for a few days to visit Pepper who was there on business.
You stood there staring at the now empty room suddenly feeling like an awkward loser.
No one had wished you a Happy Birthday on your special day. You were bummed and sad to say the least. You turned around and headed back to your bedroom to have a shower and relax.
Since the compound was empty with everyone else being away on a mission or away in general, it was only you that was there. Alone. On your birthday that no one had remembered.
You were a little salty about it too.
You always remembered everyone's birthday and always made a cake for them, or a special treat if they weren't interested in cake but so far, no one even acknowledged it.
You slinked down to the kitchen and made yourself lunch when you noticed a Quin Jet fly in. Thinking it was Steve and Bucky back from their mission, you headed to the hangar to greet them. When you noticed it was a few lower-level agents who got out, you hung your head down and returned to the kitchen to finish your lunch.
When supper rolled around, you still had not received any texts or calls from anyone about your birthday, so you were still miserable. You also had no idea where Steve and Bucky were since they were supposed to be back in the afternoon, and it was dark out.
You grabbed some leftover pizza from the fridge that you thought was Nat's, but you didn't care because you were mad and annoyed. You went back to your room and put on a movie to hopefully get your mind off things.
To someone looking at you from the outside, your reaction to having no one wish you well on your special day would seem childish, but you were sad because all you wanted was to be acknowledged and perhaps a small chocolate cake. You could care less about the presents, as all you want to do is have fun with your friends on your special day.
The movie you had on was becoming increasingly boring, and you had a few tears stinging your eyes when you decided to shut it off and head to your rooftop hiding spot to relax amongst the stars. You usually came out to the roof when you wanted to get away from people, were sad, or just wanted to be alone. Th
e only other person who ever joined you in your secret hiding spot was Bucky, and he was flying around somewhere on a Quinn Jet with Steve. You texted him a few times to make sure he was safe, and he replied they were running late but would be back soon. You grabbed a blanket, pillow, and proceeded to relax.
You took notice of the time, and it was 11:30pm.
Great.
You went the whole day with no one wishing you a happy birthday you thought to yourself as you let a small tear trickle down your face that you let dry in the cold. You sat there with your head down, air pods in, and your music playing trying to drown out your thoughts.
You didn't notice the door to the rooftop open since it was behind you, and your music was playing so you didn't hear the footsteps coming up and were startled when you saw Bucky sit down in front of you.
"Jesus Bucky, you scared me!" you held your hand on your chest.
"Sorry Doll, we just got back 15 minutes ago. I've been looking all over for you, had to use FRIDAY to find you" he smiled at you.
You looked down and continued moping around when his face became serious.
"Are you ok?" he asked.
"I'm fine."
You looked up at him and plastered a fake smile on your face.
He scoffed at that and sat closer to you while he placed your head on his shoulder.
"You can tell me" he whispered.
"It's nothing Buck, I'm fine, honestly" you insisted as you were suddenly warmer from his body heat.
You looked up at him from your close spot and he noticed the few tears you had but didn't say anything, only wiping them away.
"Oh, I almost forgot. Here, this is for you. Happy Birthday Y/n" he gave you a small card and giftbox he had in his hoodie pocket.
"Sorry I wasn't here earlier because of the mission but according to the time, it's still your birthday for another...10 minutes" he smiled proudly while he checked his watch.
"I hated that I was stuck on a boring mission with Steve instead of being able to spend your day with you."
"What is this Bucky?" you asked looking at him.
"It's your Birthday Y/n, so it's a present?" Bucky looked at you confused.
"You remembered my birthday?"
"Of course, I did. You told me a few months ago when it was. Remember when we were training, and you were going to make a list of all the stupid winter activities you wanted to look at for your birthday. I asked you why you thought they were stupid, and you complained about your birthday being in the winter and that all winter birthday activities were stupid. I then asked you when your birthday was, and you told me." he chuckled as he hugged you tight to him.
"I can't believe you remembered that conversation. You were the only one who remembered."
He looked at you with confusion all over his face.
"I don't understand, so no one wished you a happy birthday today?" he sounded angry.
"Nope." You flatly said emphasizing the 'p' then looked down.
"No one did anything for you?"
"No Bucky, and could you stop reminding me?" you huffed.
"Sorry, I don't understand." He was now holding your hands in his.
"I'll have to have a chat with everyone tomorrow about this" he grumbled and was a little scary looking.
"It's ok Buck, the day is over anyways." You shrugged.
"Well, I won't let this slide. You always do so much for us here on our birthdays, it's the least I can do." He held you tighter to him.
"Open your present." He playfully nudged your thigh with his.
You smiled at him and proceeded to open the card first. It was a homemade card with a very primitive stick figure drawing he did of you and him on a mission pointing guns at some bad guys. He even managed to draw you in your tactical gear and give you a cute ponytail.
You giggled at the card.
Inside he wrote:
Happy Birthday Y/n. Life should be lived with a smile on your face, and no one does a better job of putting one on my face than you.  Love Bucky
You smiled up at him after reading the card and he gave you a quick kiss on the cheek causing you to blush and look away.
You grabbed the small box and opened it. When you saw what was inside, your eyes were huge. It was a white gold necklace with a small moon pendant that sparkled in the light.
"Bucky, this is beautiful." You took it out and examined it.
"I wanted to get you something that would remind you of our special spot here on the roof. We often look up at the moon and talk or sometimes we just lay here in silence and watch the sky. I really cherish these times with you because I can fully relax while I'm with you." He helped you hold up your hair as you put on your necklace.
"Bucky, it's lovely." You looked down at it.
He was grinning like a fool.
"Thank you." You leaned into him for a hug.
"No problem doll." He separated from you slightly as he leaned forward and kissed you which you happily returned.
