Here's another snippet from my Daddy!Joel and Little!Ellie sickfic:

"You still have enough of everything? Midol? Pads?"

Ellie nodded, adverting her gaze to the floor as her cheeks flushed a bright pink. Despite it having been a year since she came to live with Joel permanently, Ellie was still getting used to being able to talk so casually about these sorts of things without the conversation immediately being shut down by just the mention of her period. It felt awkward as hell (at least on her end), but she had to admit that it was a damn nice change.

"Yeah, I still have enough of everything. Speaking of which, I should probably go pop a Midol, and dig out my heating plushy. I could definitely use both of those things right about now."

"How 'bout I go what you need, while you get settled on the couch? We can even watch something while we have dinner. Anything you want."

Ellie's eyes darted back up to look at Joel. "Anything?"

The man gave a nod, already having an idea of where this was heading.

"Anything."

A slow smile began to creep across the girl's face. "Can we watch Chicken Little, then?"

Out of all the animated movies Joel had guessed might be Ellie's favorite, Chicken Little had not been one of them. Joel lost count how many times they've watched that movie in the year that she's been living with him. He could practically recite the entire script by heart by now.

Ellie's face broke out into a full-blown grin, her arms uncurling from around her stomach and falling back down to her sides.

"If you'll excuse me then–" she moved to stand, prompting Joel to stand with her–"I'm gonna go get Disney+ up and running. Don't be long, old man."

She grabbed the strap of her backpack and slung it back over her shoulder, before turning and walking out of the kitchen with a victorious smile.

Joel just shook his head and rolled his eyes; worried frown being replaced by a fond smile. If she was still able to be her usual jokester self, then she would be just fine.

With his worries subdued for the time being, Joel made his way to the staircase. He stopped at the linen closet in the hallway, grabbing the pinkish red, white striped lobster heating plushy. He then went into the hall bathroom and rummaged around in the medicine cabinet until he found the small bottle of Midol inside. Once Joel had everything Ellie needed, he returned to the kitchen.

Joel first threw the heating plush into the microwave for the recommended five minutes, then he grabbed a glass from the cupboard above the sink and filled it halfway with water. While he waited for the plush to finish heating up, the man took the water and bottle of Midol into the living room where Ellie was now curled into the corner of the couch with her homework resting on her knees and a pencil in her hand. A glance at the TV showed Chicken Little already queued up on Disney+.

Seven Sentence Sunday

Buck did consider going to college just to get away his parents off his back and away from them. However, he really does not want to go into debt. He does not even know what he would study in the first place. He has some money saved from over the years from doing chores, birthdays, mowing lawns and gardening around town, shoveling snow, yard sales, lemonade stands and many more little odd jobs. So, he has some money to hold him over for a little while if he wants to leave.

He thinks about Maddie and asking her for advice. She is his older sister and nine years older than him after all.

He wants to go and explore and travel but not without his sister. Maybe he could convince her.

Maddie lives in her own place and is a nurse. She is nine years older than him and a real adult.

It is June of 2010. Public schools across the nation of The United States Of America are all out for summer vacation from Hershey, Pennsylvania to El Paso, Texas. Evan "Buck" Buckley, Edmundo "Eddie" Diaz and Shannon Macdonald are three eighteen years with baby Christoper. They just graduated high school and running away from home to California, The Golden State and find each other. Shannon drags her best friend who is Eddie and baby to California with her to set off her dream of becoming a therapist. Buck and Eddie have found their passion for becoming firefighters and help and healing people. Into adulthood they go.

“Okay, Mr. Locke, I’m going to undo your gown so I can check your recovery. It’ll only be a couple of minutes.”

Chad smirks. “You’ll take any excuse to see my abs, won’t you?”

April forces the smile to remain on her face. “I’m just checking the incision site. I’m going to lower your gown.”

She pulls on some gloves and checks the site. Chad’s cocky grin remains. April focuses on the wound.

“It seems to be healing up nicely.”

“Will it leave a scar?”

“Likely a smaller one. But,” April pulls away and snaps off her gloves to throw them out. “I’d say that’s a small price to pay for getting a hernia out of your chest.”

Chad moves his gaze into a small pout, batting his eyelashes. “April…”

“Dr. Hunt,” she quickly interrupts.

“Dr. Hunt. Would you sleep with someone with a scar like that?”

April scoffs. “That’s not appropriate, Mr. Locke.”

“I’m just asking your opinion. Someone as beautiful as you must have standards.”

Children deserve patience.

I remember all the times growing up that I’d get in trouble for something I said or did, and I’d get in more trouble when I asked for an explanation. I was told I was “talking back” or being a “smart ass” when I literally was just trying to understand.

I also find that I’d get punished for being emotional. Even if I didn’t handle them in the right way, that was an opportunity to teach me how to handle them better. Instead I got in trouble and it just taught me to suppress my emotions. And honestly? Adults have bad days and difficulty handling their emotions. But somehow as a child, I was punished for not being perfect.

I think, for my parents at least, they’d get upset and ask why I was disrespecting them or doing something to them. And I think that’s the problem. They took my actions to mean I was maliciously trying to upset them when that was never the case. Instead of sitting back and trying to figure out why a child might be doing what they’re doing, they took it personally and that’s what made them so angry. If you think someone is intentionally trying to upset you, it’s going to likely upset you. And that wasn’t a fair assumption to make.

Children deserve patience and the benefit of the doubt.
