It is also Indonesian for 'forest people'. Orang is Indonesian for People/person, and Utan means Forest. Malay and Indo share many of the same words and meanings. People in Sumatra described them as such when trying to explain their existence to original explorers.

Orangutan
Orangutan - “man of the wild”
From Malay orang utan, literally “man of the wild,” from orang (man) + utan (forest, wild). It is possible that the word originally was used by town-dwellers on Java to describe savage forest tribes of the Sunda Islands and that Europeans misunderstood it to mean the ape.

Clearly the next step is to require background checks on all pipe purchases...as we know one in a million people who purchase them use them for violence.

Bra
Bra - “armored armplate”
From Old French “braciere”, a term that referred to the armored armplates used by French Renaissance soldiers. It is unknown why or who at Vogue magazine dubbed the new undergarments after this French battle armor in 1902, but it remains today, albeit in the shortened form of bra.

Grouse
Grouse - “all out (of beer)”
In German taverns they would cry “gar aus!” (all out) when their cups were dry and needed a refill. This gave rise to both grouse (to complain) and carouse (to have a rowdy good time).
