News "Lifeguards who never practiced rescue plans. A complaint about no lifeguards on duty less than a month before tragedy struck. A 16-year-old boy who didn’t know how to swim."
As a lifeguard myself, what bothers me the most is that they try to blame the boy for not knowing how to swim. Yes, it is very important to learn how to swim, but we all know that not everyone does. As a lifeguard, you are responsible for looking out for people who don't know how to swim, and it seems like the lifeguard(s) on duty were not prepared for that. No one should ever have to lose a loved one to drowning, especially not will  a lifeguard on duty!

During training to become a lifeguard I cut my hand while climbing out of the pool. The grating covering the drains had sliced my left palm just under the middle finger deep enough to leave a small inflexible scar as a physical reminder of the experience.
After three dedicated years, just as…

And it is then that you realize how much clothing you need on hand, ready for any type of weather conditions. Because even if you need a sweatshirt, leggings, socks, or a raincoat, people will still come and swim. It also means that you will likely go into a depression for a few weeks, because as much as us lifeguards like to complain about our job, deep down we love it more than anything and leaving only makes us miss it more.

As annoying as they are a lot of the time, having kids around you at the pool makes life more exciting and their cuteness can bring a smile to your face.

Even though you could just jump in to cool off on your break, getting a save is way more exhilarating!

I found this YouTube channel recently that posts videos of real rescues. I think it's fun to watch them and try to identify the person drowning before they do or look at the way the lifeguard conducted the save. Let me know if you watch any of them, I'd love to discuss them or share my own opinions!

A short poem about life guarding
A summers day, bright and warm
brings screaming children through our door
As parents smile and wave goodbye
lifeguards sigh and whisper

Dear Family who Insist on Wearing Wetsuits to a Public Pool,
If you’re really that cold or you can’t handle eighty-degree water, maybe you should, I don’t know…not go swimming?
Sincerely, The Lifeguard who is worried she might have to treat you for heat exhaustion.
