Brazilian police arrest suspected masterminds behind the killing of councilwoman-turned-icon

Brazil’s federal police arrested on Sunday the men suspected of ordering the killing of a Rio de Janeiro councilwoman in 2018, a long-awaited step after years of society clamoring for justice.

The brutal assassination of Marielle Franco, a 38-year-old Black, bisexual Rio de Janeiro city councilwoman in a drive-by shooting, shook Brazil profoundly and reverberated across the world.

Two federal police sources with knowledge of the investigation told The Associated Press that congressman Chiquinho Brazão and his brother Domingos Brazão, a member of Rio state’s accounts watchdog, were detained on suspicion of ordering the hit against Franco. Both have alleged connections to criminal groups, known as militias, who illegally charge residents for various services, including protection.

The sources didn’t make clear what their suspected motive was.

Clothing representing the 11,500 Palestinian and 36 Israeli children who have been killed in Gaza were laid out on Bournemouth beach this week.

The 5km line of second-hand clothes was created by activists were laid out to illustrate the scale of child deaths in Gaza.

Each set of clothing represents a child who had been killed.

The internet is a great way for young people interested in political activism to burn themselves out and become disillusionned with the left without ever actually contributing to anything that really exists. The woke online zone has all the downsides of real activism (constantly dealing with obnoxious pedants, the endless stream of people who have no actual investment in achieving left wing goals but stick around for the social aspect/access to young women, constant ideological disputes) with none of the benefits (actually helping anyone in any way whatsoever)

In a country with epidemic rates of loneliness, expanding our sense of what counts as meaningful love—and acknowledging and supporting relationships in all their forms—could have enormous benefits. Energy spent striving to prop up the insular institution of marriage could instead be spent working to support family stability in whatever form it takes.”
