This week I've been featuring work from former students in conjunction with my upcoming Writing For Comics continuing education class through @svacontinued and @mfavn. Next up is @thechaoman and his post-apocalyptic graphic novel series, Hazmatt. It's two volumes of survival action, with an art Duke that's a potent mix of manga and indie comics. What stands out the most about about Hazmatt and Tony's storytelling is that with he uses no dialogue. "Silent" issues are incredibly hard to pull off, and the fact that Tony has kept me hooked through two volumes without a single word ballon or caption is nothing short of remarkable. With my upcoming Writing For Comics online continuing education class starting Jan 30, I'm continuing to highlight exemplary student work form my nearly 10(!) years of teaching at SVA @mfavn. Next up is the wonderful @susannemreece. As a student Susanne started pushing the boundaries of the comic form immediately, creating a "visual essay" in comics form during her first year, I believe the first ever in our grad program. Since then, she has become a prolific comics creator, both in print and digital. Susanne's focus has been on vivid comics poetry and poignant memoir. It's amazing what she can convey in just a few short panels, and her Instagram comics posts are often the highlight of my day. Scroll to see a mere sliver of her output. Just as impressively, Susanne has joined me as a graduate level instructor at SVA, and it's been a pleasure teaching with her. She's also teaching "Comics Poetry: Experimenting with Text and Imagery" as an @svacontinued class this semester. Since I'm going to be teaching my @mfavn Writing for Comics class at @svacontinued this semester, I thought I'd use that as an excuse to finally feature some of my incredible student's #comics work from over the years. First up is @gdaviscathcart's 1-800-Ghosts, out now from @fantagraphics. Without spoiling too much, it's a time travel heist set in the art world of 1980's New York. But it's much more than that. It's a virtuoso performance of art and writing, one which the prestigious Conics Journal called "a more or less a perfect comic." Scroll to see one if the best action sequences of all time. While I take no credit for my students work it was a pleasure to see this develop from script to comic, and I'm immensely proud of Davis' accomplishment. Starting Jan 30th, I'm teaching an online Writing for Comjcs class at SVA (The School of Visual Arts). Unlike the classes I teach to grad students at @mfavn, this is a continuing education class though @svacontinued that is open to everyone.
