December brings
cold wind and seasonal flyers –
broken banks

Post: Life isn’t fair…
Stark accumulation of truth
Came across this picture in a social media feed, and it reminded me if the film Labyrinth.
Sarah: That’s not fair!Jareth: You say that so often, I wonder what your basis for comparison is?
Truth hurts

Post: Killing my Clones
Post: Killing my Clones
I am killing off my social media clones that I had used to promote my writing. Twitter; Facebook; and anywhere else that I can remember creating MerlinSpielen or Stephen Mumble web presence.
I linger here even though I have moved some work elsewhere – there are over 2000 posts in this site and whenever I start looking for the ones that are not awful – I get distracted!
Inertia is a powerful…

Ramble: Consternation
I want to be more than this tangled mess of feelings
You fill me with want and panic and sweet dread
Concrete shoes upon my feet pulling me down
Into the eternal green of wine-tossed seas
There is no hope
No escape from what I am
Once upon a time
I had dreams
Sweet as summer clover
Waiting to be mown
Raked into windrows
Dried beneath summer sun
Now I am fallow emptiness
Unfulfilled
Overgrown…

Farm to Table
This
iron knife
wooden handle
from my father's estate
stained by sweat
old chicken blood
we butchered at home
standing in
black rubber boots
silently plucking
rising odor
of wet feathers
assorted viscera
thirty birds
ready for market
rinsed wrapped and frozen
$10.50 each
giblets extra
cash and carry
after market
we'd stop for
breakfast at Marta's
Making plans
to begin again.

Ramble: Zero to Sixty
shattered the morning with coffee again
broken mug patterns of ceramic and cream
Guatemalan grind bitter black dreams
it rarely ever gets better than this
I used to think
there'd be someone
who would laugh
along with me at
my clumsy mess
empty voice echoes off hot shower walls
Ella Fitzgerald lyrics rinsing the blues
drip slap staccato showerhead spray
washing cold morning down through old…

we are separated
by a million years
of evolution

yet in perspective
isolated disconnected
we are no so so different.

droning delinquent
doling discombobulated
dodecaphonic
dodecasyllabic
dodecahedrons
fuzzified faces
full of phonetics
farcically singing
doo-dah dodo
doodling poems
doodad doofus
doowopping doozies
dollies and daises
drooping in dumpsters
finally done.

Ramble: Ninths
broken brittle bits branching
up
across

counter top and floor
swift silent surface sweeping
across
down
under
cleaning out this mess
endless cycle of pretending chaos
might be tamed into order
dish washer
laundry machine
vacuum cleaner
humming weekend jazz and blues
Monday is waiting.

Ramble: Fourths
Morning gurgles coffee brewing
one dark drip by drip by drop
slow agony arising
creaking bedsprings
crackling bones
unbending
I shuffle
towards destiny
barefoot pilgrimage
towards warm lure of coffee
across cold bathroom floor
inexorably
dribbling forward in relief
and eternal salvation.

Ramble: Thirds
I am piling shredded
Christmas paper on the curb
when my cell rings.
We are no longer lovers;
and yet you call – as always.
predictable as January snows
whispering of ennui
and Boxing week sales.
Your voice enticing me to come.
‘It’ll be fun’, your words
garbled promise over
hands-free Bluetooth
when your car glides to my curb
silent electric full stop.
Who am I to argue with
faux leather…

Ramble: Seconds
Primary numbers
sequentially accumulating
beneath fractal snow falls
There are no patterns
in these drifting swirls
piling high around my feet
Inconsequential
I am not a primary number
or elsewise otherwise defined
I am the remains
of an unclaimed archaeology
lost in primordial forests
Here amongst innumerable trees
branches reach toward infinity
waving at the sole hidden sun
Sedentary…

Ramble: New Year Remains
2022
boldly kicked the old year out
2021
new year has arrived
and yet still somehow I think
2021
nothing seems to change
I am convinced this remains
2020 too.

Ramble: 2021 Nears the End
Growing up on the farm.
Black and white TV telling me stories via rabbit ears.
I was certain that I could be the next Tarzan of the Jungle.
The snowy screen showing me dreams I’d never create on my own.
Eventually I realized my many gaps
How my grasp of Great Ape grammar was lacking
and my basic Chimpanzee was none existent.
Still I did try to master vine swinging;
and tree-top jumping

Post: Canadian Federal Election Results - 2021
Post: Canadian Federal Election Results – 2021
Well just took a look at the Canadian Federal Election results and I think we should call this the Groundhog Day Election in reference to the Bill Murray film.
I really think I have seen these results before.
Here is hoping the actors in this comedy-drama learn as much as Phil Connors
