I love how Arakawa clearly wrote detailed backstories for her characters and just like… never elaborates on them. I found an old interview where she was asked why she didn’t include a resolution for Hawkeye and Mustangs goals and her response was essentially “cause this story is about Ed :)”

She’s my biggest inspiration.

Envy could have defeated Mustang

Because Roy will never, ever hurt Riza.

Like, duh. Okay, but hear me out. It goes beyond the "I'm never gonna hurt someone I love" kind of feeling.

Roy could never, ever, ever bring himself to physically hurt her. Like, not even in the slightest. Emotionally? That's more debatable. I imagine that tensions can run high between the two of them, that they do argue and—why not—be hurtful toward each other in their worst moments. Sure.

But physically, Roy will never so much as lay a finger on his precious lieutenant.

Take the scene where Mustang almost finishes off Envy. Hawkeye is more than ready to shoot him, yet at no point does he threaten to counter her. In that moment, he's in a place of maniacal rage and hatred, so a natural response to Hawkeye's defiance is to disarm her, right? Actually, that's what he tells Edward when he refuses to hand Envy over; he yells at him and threatens to blow his arm up. But he doesn't even think of doing that against Riza.

Also, in the short scene where Riza drops by his office to pick up some books (after being reassigned under Bradley), the two of them half-joke about the promise she made of shooting Roy, etc. Despite the topic's gravity, the tone of their conversation is actually somewhat lighthearted. It ends with Riza telling Roy that his behavior is still within her acceptance thresholds, to which Roy replies that she's very kind. Thinking about a reversed situation, you'd never catch Mustang jesting about burning Hawkeye for any reason. I believe there's something taboo about Roy touching/harming Riza's body, which obviously finds its roots in the back-burning plea Roy fulfilled. The topic will always remain too raw, too sensitive to be discussed between them, and too traumatizing for Roy to ever consider physically hurting Riza again.

Then, I've always wondered why Roy didn't try to cauterize Riza's sliced throat (okay, maybe that's medically impractical, I have no clue tbh), the same way he did for Havoc (in the manga, Jean even blames Roy for over-burning him). But it's just that Roy could never bring himself to scar Riza any more than he already has. It's too much for him to bear.

So, on the Promised Day, in that tunnel, if Envy hadn't shape-shifted into Hughes but Hawkeye instead, I truly don't think Mustang would have been capable of snapping his fingers to see his flames consume Riza's body. If Envy had been a little smarter, he could have defeated Mustang.

ok but i have not forgotten about royai ofc. royai my beloved. i’m picking up my one-shots first because those are always easier to dive back into, and i’ve been writing snippets of chapter two of the august fic in a completely non-linear fashion, but this is turning into a beast of a character study bcs omg there is actually so much to explore about riza’s decision to join the military. like beyond love what about the false promise of a stable job and three meals on the table and a life bigger than herself and her small, insipid town? and the struggles of trying to fit in with the sudden diverse crowd? of being thrust again into the same spiral of losing control over her life? the earth-shattering realisation that she’s done all the relentless chasing, but it’s like a dog running after its own tail and she’s only distanced herself from the only thing she's ever wanted? and now she’s widened this gulf with her own steps, so wide as to be wholly unbridgeable???
