When I first contacted Dante over email, I’d mentioned that I wanted an unrestrained look at his life as one of a select few who can speak to what it was like as a grunge rocker in the 90s. Writing back, he was open to the idea and joked about the very thought I had moments earlier. About feeling like a bunch of dinosaur bones on display. Now, he goes and gets himself a beer and comes back through the mess of his home and asks, “you still want the whole story?” I tell him I do. He takes a long chug of his bottle. “Then I guess let’s start from the top."

I'm choosing to believe the Combat Adjudicator from DMC3 and DMC4 is an idol/goddess just like the Idol of Time and Space. I enjoy the implications of this. The two figures in Devil May Cry that may actually be divine and not demonic can be described as such:

A lion-headed goddess who uses her temporal powers exclusively to barter her knowledge of the past in exchange for crystalized demon blood. The knowledge she sells primarily consists of combat techniques, but also seems to include dance moves. Given the existence of the void, it's possible that she can teach these things in a very direct way.

A snake-tailed, four-armed goddess who's depicted being chained-up, and invites humans to attack her, awarding them with power if they do so in a sufficiently interesting way. Can be picky about what weapon or person she wants to be hurt by in a given moment. Sometimes speaks in rhyme.

Some describe Norse mythology by saying all of their gods are war gods to some degree, even if they formally have other more formal domains. I get the sense that this is the case for the idols that humans worship in Devil May Cry.

Fic: Apep Swallows the Moon

For: Me, the author!

A rebind of my very first bind - same fic, but updated with new skills, supplies, tools, typeset, and design sensibilities! This fic is about some horrible painful body transformations (weredragonism) and ritualistic axe killings in the woods at night, so I wanted the cover and the end-papers to reflect the bloody, uncanny, torn flesh feeling. I first cut a strip of the neon red slub and lay it across the (bradel bound) bookboards; once that was glued down, I tore up the scaly paper until I had the ideal shape for the cover. The end-papers are, of course, Crepaldi.

The fic also deals with ancient Egyptian myth and magic, so the typeset has ancient Egyptian elements, like a panel from the Book of the Dead where the gods kill the demon snake, Apep, that I used for the title spread. Apep is in the odd-page header of every chapter, but each chapter has a different hieroglyph in the even-page header, reflecting a key character from that chapter: the cat, the brother, and the Pharaoh.
