Heyo! If it's not too much trouble, could I get the FO4 companions reacting to a Sole who's super good with wild animals? Like the animal friend and wasteland whisperer perks but they're out here cuddling wild molerats and are able to pet Deathclaws. If that's not too much to ask, thank you muchly. Love your stuff!
I don't play around with Animal Friend and Wasteland Whisperer as much as I'd like to. I did once befriend a Deathclaw in Fallout 3, who died about five seconds later. He was great while he lasted though. Anyways, I'm glad you're enjoying the requests, thank you so much! I hope this one lives up to your expectations!
//
Companions React to an Animal Loving Sole (Includes: Cait, Codsworth, Curie, Danse, Deacon, Hancock, MacCready, Nick, Piper, Preston and X6-88)
Cait She'll immediately assume that Sole has some kind of death wish the first time she sees them carelessly approaching a wild Molerat with their hand held out. It's only when Sole doesn't lose a limb to the creature that Cait finds herself somewhat impressed, although, she makes a comment about how they'll probably catch all sorts of diseases from 'that rodent'. She doesn't think too much of it afterwards, that is until she finds Sole coming back into Sanctuary with a Deathclaw in tow, it's at that point that Cait will start to question Sole's sanity. Eventually, she gets used to finding Sole hanging out with Radscorpions, as though they aren't known for killing people without hesitation. She still finds it weird and she still isn't happy about that one time she woke up to a Radroach casually jumping around her head, but it becomes one of those things about Sole that she just accepts.
Codsworth Having known Sole for as long as he has, Codsworth is no stranger to his old friend's affinity for all different kinds of animals. He can still recall the amount of stray dogs and cats that Sole had brought into their home before the war, despite their spouse worrying that one might jump up at Shaun one day. If anything, Codsworth actually likes that this is something that hasn't changed about Sole - there's a lot of bad in the Wasteland and Codsworth knows better than any of the other companions how much this new world has changed Sole, so he finds it comforting to see some aspects of him are still the same. Of course, Codsworth is still sure to keep his distance from the creatures that Sole befriends; sure, they may like Sole, but who's to say they'll feel the same way about his robot companion?
Curie She loves having the opportunity to see the creatures of the Commonwealth up close and if Sole's happy to befriend every Mirelurk in sight, then Curie is more than happy to join him. Once Sole gets an animal to settle down, they usually tend to warm up to Curie immediately after - there was an incident with a Radstag kicking her over once, Curie doesn't like to talk about it. She also finds it interesting to see how the different animals in the wasteland have adapted and mutated to their environment and is more than happy to discuss it with Sole, if they're willing to listen.
Paladin Danse Initially, he thinks that stopping to pet every abomination that they come across is a waste of both their time and he makes this very clear to Sole. He tries to shut down Sole's attempts to befriend these animals as often as he can, although sometimes he can't help but find it quite mesmerising to watch a Deathclaw peacefully wander about right before his eyes. Still, it's only when Sole manages to tame a whole pack of rabid molerats that Danse wonders if their odd love for animals isn't so bad after all, not that he'd ever swallow his pride for long enough to admit that to Sole.
Deacon He does try to get used to the idea that Sole is going to pet every dangerous, man-eating creature that they come across, but it just freaks him out way too much. The stray mongrels following them around and wanting to play fetch are cute, even he can't deny that, although he'd prefer Dogmeat over them any day, but there's no way he'll ever get used to turning around and seeing a Deathclaw following after them like a big puppy. All Deacon asks is that Sole doesn't take it personal if he leaves them to fend for themselves when it comes to dealing with animals, he'd just prefer not to give a Molerat head scratches if he can help it.
Hancock Considering Sole chose to take him on their travels, he doesn't find it all that surprising that they'd want to pick up every other ugly stray they come across too. Admittedly, it's probably one of his favourite things about travelling with Sole, he'll never warm up to any of the bugs - Mirelurks are a firm no for him - that somehow become docile in Sole's presence, but he's got a soft spot for the Molerats. He'd love to bring one back home with him, for the sake of having some company and a mascot for Goodneighbor, but he gets the feeling nobody else in town would approve of that, so for now, it stays a simple daydream for him.
MacCready Once he gets over the shock of a pack of friendly Yaoi Guais swarming him and Sole, he's immediately jealous of this strange talent his friend has and wants to know how they do it. He refuses to take Sole not knowing for an answer and makes it his life goal to befriend at least one animal out in the Wasteland, of course, this ends with a dog bite on his arm and a bruised ego, especially when Sole manages to calm down the dog that had just attacked him. After that, he figures it's best for his own safety if he leaves the animal befriending to Sole, but he does ask for his own pet Deathclaw more times than he can count - not that it'd be very practical to have around Duncan, but a man can dream.
Nick Valentine There's not a lot left in the Commonwealth that can shock Nick Valentine, he's near enough seen it all and so, although Sole is expecting a much bigger reaction from the synth detective, he just accepts it. Besides, he once came across a girl roaming Boston Commons with a Sentry Bot for a best friend, a Mirelurk Queen isn't exactly that big of a surprise in comparison. That doesn't mean he won't go out of his way to pet any animals that Sole manages to tam on their travels, his favourite was probably the Radroach that Sole taught to roll over.
Piper Wright She genuinely thinks that she's having some kind of fever dream that first time she sees it, there's no way Sole would actually be sat at their campfire with a Mutant Hound sat on their lap peacefully. After pinching herself a few times and accepting the reality in front of her, Piper doesn't hesitate to dub Sole "The Wasteland Whisperer." If anything, she likes the bonus of not having to worry about fighting off any creatures whilst they're out on their travels, she just wishes that at least someone back in Diamond City would believe her when she told them about her Vault Dweller friend who can tame even the most vicious of creatures; even Nat thinks she's full of it.
Preston Garvey The first time that Preston saw Sole tame an animal was the Deathclaw back in Concord and for a moment, he was convinced that he was already dead and he just hadn't realised yet. At first, he wasn't sure how to bring it up to Sole to question it and so he decided not to question their odd talent at all, that was until he started travelling with them and they came across a Radroach nest. Preston still can't quite believe that there's someone out there that can befriend any animal they come across no matter what, but he finds it remarkable and he really doesn't mind when Sole brings animals back to Sanctuary. He's actually rather fond of the Yaoi Guai Sole brought back after going to clear out a settlement, he just hopes that they stay friendly, for everyone's sake.
X6-88 He doesn't see the point in befriending any of the creatures out in the Wasteland, it's far better to simply put them out of their misery after the generations of mutation they've had to endure. He makes this known to Sole immediately, which seems to offend his travelling companion, after that, he decides not to comment on it at all, aside from a few eye rolls and scoffs here and there. Of course, he doesn't complain too much when it comes to having the extra back up of a Deathclaw during a fight with raiders or Super Mutants.

*holds out hands* spare some preston garvey headcanons, good sir?
Preston is so underrated, I'm so glad he has some fans out there! I personally don't tend to use him unless I'm running a Minutemen playthrough, but he's severely under appreciated. Poor guy just wants to help the Commonwealth. (Accidentally made him hate me in my last playthrough because I was playing around with Nuka World, sorry Preston </3)
//
Preston Garvey Headcanons
Although they met in unfortunate circumstances, Sturges, Mama Murphy and the Longs are the closest thing he's ever had to a real family, as he lost his biological family at a young age and doesn't really remember them.
He expected to rise up the ranks of the Minutemen easily, but actually struggled at first and fell behind his peers a little. It did knock his confidence a lot, but he managed to work his way up, it just took him a bit longer.
Deathclaws just creep him out, more so than any other creatures in the Wasteland, the one in Concord didn't help that.
It's more or less canon that he has a lot of guilt regarding the Quincy Massacre, which is a big reason as to why he's hesitant to help out more settlements. He's worried about not being able to save people a second time around.
He bought Sunset Sarsaparilla from a trader from the Mojave once and no other drink has ever compared to it since, he's often considered heading out West just to get another bottle.
Piper managed to convince him to do an interview for the Publick once, about how the Minutemen had changed since Sole had taken over as the General. It was inevitably scrapped as he stumbled over his words so many times, there wasn't anything coherent that Piper could write about.
Despite most of the Minutemen he used to know being gone, he managed to track down some of the remnants and makes an effort to see them as often as he can. It's somewhat therapeutic to be able to recount old stories with them.

How do you think your top three New Vegas companions (or all if you want to) react to a courier admitting that they have chronic migraines from their head injury that chems can’t dull? (Arcade ready with a whole lecture on chem addiction and courier’s like ‘I just want my brain to stop screaming at me… Both kinds of literally :( )
I FEEL LIKE MY TOP 3 ARE SO BORING but they're also safe choices i think?? rex is definitely top 3 but i don't think he'd be a particularly interesting option, so i hope you don't mind arcade, boone and cass <3
//
New Vegas Companions React to a Courier with Chronic Migraines (Contains: Arcade Gannon, Boone and Cass)
Arcade Gannon We already know he's gonna be giving the courier a lecture on the effects of chem addiction, that goes without saying. He's been in Freeside long enough to see how addiction has affected others around him and he's actually grown to like the courier, so there's no way he's going to watch the same thing happen to them. He knows he can't stop the migraines altogether, but he's willing to be patient with the courier when they do come around and make sure his friend gets the best care possible. He'll likely suggest that the courier lets the Followers try and treat them, since that's probably the best medical care they could get, but if they don't want to go with that option, he won't push.
Craig Boone While his own issues with head pain are nothing compared to the courier's, Boone's suffered from his fair share of stress migraines, with everything that's happened in the past few years. He can sympathise better than the courier may expect and surprisingly enough, he's actually very understanding if Six needs more time to rest up or can't do something on a day where their migraines are worse than usual. He knows the pain and the idea of having to deal with that consistently is a terrifying thought to him, so he can't begin to imagine how the courier managed to keep it together for so long. Boon knows his presence alone can't stop the migraines, but he hopes that it's at least a comfort for the courier.
Cass Any headaches she's suffered from have always been cured by a bottle of whiskey to knock her out for the night, which is the first thing she suggests to Six. Although, when they explain that it's not just your average headache and not even chems are helping anymore, she realises it might take more than alcohol to ease the courier's pain. She finds it quit frustrating at first, when she wants to get back on the road and the courier can hardly lift their head off the ground, but she'd never voice her irritation - it's not like Six can help it. Over time, she becomes more understanding and used to the idea that some days, it's easier on the courier to take a break and try to rest up, she doesn't have the best bedside manner, but she tries to do what she can and it's the thought that counts.

Hellooo again!! Glad to see your up and going again! could you do sole acting gullible to all of deacons tall tales but they eventually tell him they know he’s making things up but just go along with him cause they like hearing how creative he is with his lies.
HI!! Yeah, it's about time I brought this blog back from the dead lmao, I've been meaning to get around to it for a while now, so this is long overdue. As for this request, I love Deacon so much (I think I just have a soft spot for silly guys w sunglasses tbh???? Because I also love Johnny Cage from Mortal Kombat) Deacon deserves way more love though, I don't think I ever would've romanced him personally, but I do wish the option was there for the Deacon lovers.
//
Deacon with a 'Gullible' Sole
Deacon doesn't question it initially, most people tend to fall for his lies, apart from the likes of his fellow Railroad agents, who are more than used to his antics.
Besides, saying he's a synth isn't exactly something that Sole can disprove, unless they plan on killing him to find out, which doesn't sound like an ideal outcome, if you ask him.
But when Sole seems to believe his claim that he's the real leader of the Railroad, no questions asked, he starts to wonder if he's just a good liar or if Sole is somewhat naïve.
He decides to test out his theory, seeing how bold his lies can be until Sole stops falling for them.
At first, he starts small. "Hey, did you know I once beat a Super Mutant to death with a box of Sugar Bombs?"
They eventually get more outlandish, until he's effortlessly convincing Sole that Carrington is a Brahmin, who became sentient and has a really good surgeon.
He has more fun than he expects to, telling the most ridiculous lies he can think of, coming up with intricate stories behind them, more to entertain himself than anything.
Eventually he starts to feel a little guilty about all the lying, surely, this is just bullying at this point, especially when Sole believes him wholeheartedly every single time.
So, he decides to come clean... Well, Glory insists he comes clean, by threatening to put a dead bloatfly in his bed.
Much to his surprise, when he tells Sole the truth, they simply nod and tell him that they've known all along.
He hadn't planned for this outcome, and it starts to make him question the whole situation. Who'd been fooling who?
Sole explains that they'd known he was lying after taking a look at the 'recall code' he'd given them and after that, they'd just enjoyed seeing how creative his lies could get.
Admittedly, Deacon can't help but be impressed that, for once in his life, he's the one being tricked.
But he will make a point to dramatically sulk about it for a few days, his pride is a little hurt after all.

Hi! Can I have the non-human companions' reaction to a male sole that is very protective of them? Like if they're at a bar and someone shouts "get out of here freak/bucket of bolts/etc" he's beating the crap out of them immediately and when he's done he just goes back to the said companion and is all caring like "are you ok? Do you need anything?" Djdjfnfnejjr p l e a s e I've had this idea for so long
Non-human companions will always have a special place in my heart (especially Hancock because characters from Goodneighbor will always be superior to me), so this ask is really fun! Besides, I'm pretty sure every Hancock or Valentine fan has sided against the Brotherhood just for this reason. Also I have a feeling I could be missing someone, since I almost forgot Codsworth and Strong, so please let me know if I am, I can just add them on lmao
//
Non-Human Companions React to M!Sole Being Protective (Includes: Curie, Codsworth, Hancock, Nick, Strong and X6-88)
Curie She insists that Sole didn't have to go to all that trouble for her, she understands that some people are bound to dislike her simply based on her appearance and although that can be disheartening, she's come to accept it. She's a little shocked by how Sole reacts, he's never been particularly violent if he can help it, but it's more how quickly his mood changes afterwards when he goes to check on her that catches her more off guard than anything. She can't help but feel touched by the gesture though, it's nice to know that there's someone willing to look out for her.
Codsworth The Commonwealth is a lot different than it was 210 years ago, Codsworth still remembers the days when people would clamour at the opportunity to have their very own Mr. Handy. Now, all he seems to be is target practice or scrap metal to the inhabitants of the wasteland. Nevertheless, that doesn't mean he's immune to how some people tend to treat him. While Sole's act of violence is quite concerning to him, Codsworth does find himself grateful that his old friend is willing to defend him against the abuse he's become accustomed to. Codsworth assures Sole he's fine and insists that he doesn't cause so much ruckus on his behalf, but he will make a point to thank him profusely for caring, even if he is just a robot butler.
Hancock While Goodneighbor is more than welcoming to people from all walks of life, Hancock isn't blind to the treatment of his kind outside the walls. He'd seen it with his own brother in Diamond City and Hancock wishes that he'd fought as hard for the exiled ghouls as Sole had just fought for him. The name calling doesn't bother him, really, he's heard it all before and he can handle himself. What catches him off guard is Sole beating the bigot that had insulted him to a pulp. He does figure that Sole might owe him one, considering Hancock had handled Finn for him the day they'd met. Still, he assures Sole that he's fine and clarifies that he can fight his own battles, not that the show Sole had put on wasn't entertaining to watch.
Nick Valentine Being around as long as Nick has, he knows what people think of his kind and sometimes it can be hard to blame them. The Institute are dangerous and they've taken countless lives for their own selfish gain, even though it's not his fault he has to walk around looking like their poster boy, he can understand why people might take out their frustration on him. Of course, that doesn't mean he isn't quick to bite back to defend himself. On this occasion though, Sole was quicker and much more vicious and Nick had barely managed to comprehend what had just happened before Sole was back at his side asking if he was okay. Nick was fine, as usual, and only might a slightly irritated remark about Sole using his words next time rather than his fists, before thanking him.
Strong He doesn't really understand the insult being thrown at him and, although he definitely will try to join in, he isn't too sure as to why Sole is attacking a random civilian. Once Sole has made sure that Strong is okay - which, of course, he is - and once he's explained what had just happened and why, Strong isn't particularly bothered, he knows Super Mutants are the superior race, the comments of a "puny human" won't change that.
X6-88 A snide remark from a worthless scavenger means absolutely nothing to him, but apparently it means a lot to Sole, who doesn't hesitate to give the scavenger a beatdown and make him apologise to X6. He decides to wait, rather impatiently, for Sole to be done, before asking that he doesn't cause such a scene again for something so meaningless. Deep down though, Sole knows that's his way of saying thank you.

howdy! if this blog is still active, could you do new vegas companions react to courier six being a synth? idk how they'd find out, prolly either six telling them or a close call with a courser. it's up to you!
This puts anything I've ever requested on Tumblr to shame because this is such a cool idea?? I'm obsessed with crossing over the Fallout games - which is probably why MacCready's my favourite companion - so I find stuff like this so fun to write. I also just love requests like this because it gives me the chance to challenge myself, I feel like I write the Fallout 4 companions better (I definitely have more hours in 4 than any game), so I love getting the opportunity to write for New Vegas companions too!
//
Companions Reacting to the Courier Being a Synth (Includes: Arcade, Boone, Cass, Lily, Raul and Veronica)
Arcade Gannon When the courier reveals the truth to him, he's more embarrassed than anything that he didn't figure it out himself. He's never seen a robot look so unmistakably humanlike before, leaving him with a lot of questions for the Courier. After all, he's seen them eat, drink, sleep and bleed like any normal, breathing human would - can he even be sure this is the same courier that he first met in Freeside? For a while, Arcade will keep a wary eye on the courier, unsure what to believe, whether he can trust the courier, whether he's been able to trust them at all. Eventually, he comes back around, which is arguably worse for the courier, as they spend most of their time answering questions like "do you have an off switch?"
Craig Boone He doesn't think much of the strange man who'd just tried to ambush the courier, even in spite of the odd outfit that was surely far too warm for someone to be wearing in the middle of the desert. It's only when the courier appears shaken up and Boone finds some kind of component when looting the man that he thinks to question anything. The courier is dismissive at first and says that they simply just got caught off guard by the assailant, of course, Boone doesn't believe them but he doesn't see the point in pushing. When the courier inevitably tells him, it doesn't change much for him, he'll naturally be curious at to how the courier's existence is even possible, but as long as they're still willing to take the Legion down with him, he doesn't care what they are.
Cass Similarly to Boone, the revelation of the courier not being as human as they seem doesn't particularly bother her. She'll probably make a couple of jokes here and there, usually ones that the courier has heard a million times before. It doesn't make any difference to Cass though, sure, it's a little weird but she'd seen weirder just by minding her own business at the Mojave Outpost.
Lily Bowen She's fully aware that she's in no place to judge the courier for what they are and she makes that clear the moment that her companion reveals they're a synth. It doesn't necessarily change anything about the courier for her and if anything, she encourages them to talk about what they went through at the Institute, so long as they feel comfortable telling her. She'll remind them that she's still their grandma and she loves them no matter what.
Raul Tejada When you're around for long enough, you hear a lot, specifically whispers of robots posing as humans in the East, spying for their masters and replacing innocent people. Of course, none of that ever sounds like more than old myth to Raul. That is until a run in with what the courier later explains is a courser leaves Raul to deal with a revelation about his new friend. Admittedly, it's a lot for him to take in, especially after hearing so many bad things about synths for so long, but eventually, he figures nobody would want to make a synth replacement of him and if he's been able to trust the courier for this long, then surely he still can.
Veronica Santangelo Being a Brotherhood Scribe, Veronica knows quite a bit about the Institute already, but since hardly any of her fellow comrades have actually gone to the Commonwealth, her knowledge is limited. Still, it causes some uncertainty when the courier tells her the truth about their identity. She's only ever heard bad things about synths and this does seem like the definition of technology gone out of hand. It takes Veronica a while to warm up to the idea that her friend isn't going to bring her or anyone else any harm, but it'll take a bit longer that it would the others to earn back her trust.

𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐭 𝐓𝐨 𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐲
CHAPTER ONE. Into Quietus
A Fallout Fanfiction, Pre-Fallout 4 "For all the ghosts that are never gonna catch me."
Word Count: 2448 words
Summary. Born into the cruelty of the wasteland, rather than the safety of a settlement that some had been handed the privilege of, Arden Flores was born only knowing to fight. When her father finally worked up the courage to flee with his daughter from the raider gang she had been raised in, Arden was forced to learn civility behind the walls of Diamond City.
Civility never came naturally to her, not in the way it seemed to come to her father, and so Arden found herself suffocated behind those walls, almost wishing for a Super Mutant ambush or another nuclear bomb - anything to free her from what she was supposed to believe was a better life for her.
When the only person who'd ever shown her love is killed by her own bravado, Arden finds herself in a new town, where civility is a long forgotten memory and that nuclear bomb she'd wished upon would be the kindest fate.
A/N. As promised, here's the fic I've had hidden away for some time now, despite mentioning it months ago. I do have about seven chapters ready to be posted when and where I can, but they'll all definitely require some editing, because the Google Doc somehow dates back to 2021? As for Arden, I do think she's a very difficult character to like, because given her backstory, I didn't want her to come off as this perfect person. You might dislike her at first, you might hate her the whole way through and that's okay! It just means I did a good job at writing her. She'll always have a special place in my heart, but I definitely go back and forth on her myself.
Tumblr media
Arden Flores had killed before. She remembered her first kill all too vividly, her mother had just taught her how to use a gun, much to her father’s dismay. She was a natural, something her mother had said with pride Arden had never received from her since that day, so it was only fitting that Amara Murdock would take her daughter on her first raid two weeks later. Her first kill was a young boy, older than her by only a few years, too busy mourning his murdered parents to plead for his life. Arden had a black eye for three weeks after she tried to refuse and the pride her mother had felt was gone as soon as it had come about - she was barely seven years old at the time and it was the first of many signs that her mother was a monster.
Killing became easier after that, not wanting to disappoint Amara again and wanting to avoid getting hurt again. Murder was a common practice among the Murdock Raiders and Arden was no different, being born into the violence. Arden was fourteen when her father finally worked up the courage to escape with her in the night, filled with hopes of a city in the heart of what once was Boston - the Great Green Jewel, he called it. She’d never had a real home before, her mother’s gang moved around a lot and she followed, like the dutiful daughter she always had to be. Home sounded nice on paper, a chance to be a child and start anew, but beginning all over again was never as easy as her dad had made it seem.
The journey to Diamond City was a long one, looking back on it, Arden figured they were lucky to have survived it. But it came with a price, one that David Flores had paid so selflessly. While radiation had constantly been a problem, it was only now that Arden had realised the severity of it. David had refused to let Arden share the little RadAway they had and by time they’d made it to Diamond City, he was a freshly turned Ghoul. Despite his rather terrifying new appearance, he seemed to fit in with the settlement incredibly well, too well. Arden, on the other hand, could never find a place within her so-called new home, she hated the kids she went to school with, she hated the residents that looked down upon her and she especially hated the ones who tried to sympathise with her, knowing where she’d come from and excluding her father, there were about four people she could tolerate around the city. She wasn’t cut out for a quiet life and everything within her screamed for something more than Diamond City, but Dad was all she had, she had nobody else to turn to.
Eventually, it appeared that David stopped fitting in with Diamond City, the same way his daughter did. Mankind for McDonough was the end of the peaceful life he’d become accustomed to. The campaign had been started by Guy McDonough, one that advocated for anything not human to be kicked out of Diamond City, but of course, it was mostly the Ghouls that got targeted. One by one, families had been sent away from their homes, left to fend for themselves in the unforgiving wastelands Arden was well acquainted with. A Ghoul himself, David was on the hit list of every self-entitled resident in Diamond City, not forgetting the newly minted Mayor McDonough.
For weeks now, McDonough had been trying to get him and Arden to pack up their things and find somewhere else to live. According to him, there was no place in Diamond City for someone like him, “a walking corpse”, even if he did have a sixteen year old daughter he wanted to keep safe within the walls. They’d gone back and forth arguing about it ever since McDonough had been elected. Arden wasn’t blind to it all, she never really had been the type of child you could tell a comforting lie to, she knew that any day now, they’d be exiled from the city. David had to cave in eventually, even if he didn’t want to leave.
That had been the plan until Arden had taken a life again, for the first time in two years. One of the Diamond City guards had practically barged into their house, making threats and demanding they leave the settlement. Hearing someone speak to her father like that was enough for the same brutal, animalistic instinct that she’d been conditioned into having to take over. The feeling hadn’t changed at all, the same rush of anger you got before you pulled the trigger, the morbid satisfaction right after watching the bullet zip out the gun, claiming its victim and then the adrenaline would wear off, leaving you with a strangely guilty emptiness as you realised just what you’d done.
Dad had decided he’d take the blame and he still hadn’t come home.
There was an urgent knock on the door, the type you heard right before opening up to see the Children of Atom asking for donations or a Diamond City guard asking why you’d been outside the walls past curfew, drinking beer with your boyfriend. Both situations were all too familiar to Arden, but she figured those days were long gone now and in an odd way, she’d miss them. Besides, she’d probably have to break it off with Hawthorne too, not that she really minded much, she never saw it working out in the long run - even if her father seemed to like him.
“Arden, it’s John McDonough. Open up.” That definitely wasn’t a cult asking for donations. In fact, she’d probably prefer the Children of Atom right about now. Mayor McDonough’s brother, what the hell was he doing here?
Truth be told, she’d never really spoken to John before and she had no intentions to make a start. From what she heard, he spent most of his time off in Goodneighbor getting high, but he was just as bad as the rest of his family. Arden could only hope he’d disappear as quickly as he’d shown up, she really wasn’t in the mood for anyone right now. Her dad was her main priority, he was taking the blame for her on a murder, she couldn’t think about anything else.
“I know you’re in there, kid.” John was still outside. Arden fought back the urge to groan in annoyance, clearly he didn’t know how to take a hint. “Look, I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t important, just let me in.”
She didn’t get much of a chance to respond, what with John almost immediately unlocking the door himself. Arden’s actions spoke louder than anything and he was quickly greeted with a rifle aimed at his face - the same one she’d used to kill the guard. “Get the fuck out of my house.” She ordered in a low tone, she wasn’t sure whether she wanted to kill someone else today, but she was on edge and having an intruder wasn’t helping.
John didn’t have much choice but to lift his hands up in surrender, although he seemed more adamant on getting her to drop the weapon. “Woah, relax, the key was under the mat.” He explained briefly, slowly tossing the spare key to her feet, a soft jangle filling the room as it hit the floor. “I wanted to get here before security did.”
Rolling her eyes, Arden placed the rifle down on the table. He was harmless, really, probably still coming down from his last high - she knew his kind after all. “Well, I don’t even know you, McDonough.” She pointed out, “So what’s so important that you had to break in to tell me?”
He let out a sigh, “It’s about your dad.”
This piqued her interest. David had been gone for about an hour now and between pacing up and down the house, Arden had half been considering going out to see where he was. “Just tell me how long they’re gonna keep him in jail for.” She assumed his confession of murder was past the point of him having a bail now. She didn’t mind fending for herself for a few days, she was capable and Dad knew that, but when it was her that should’ve been going to confess for the crime she committed? She couldn’t help but feel a little guilty.
The look on John’s face said enough, but she didn’t want to believe it - she couldn’t. “Arden, you, uh . . You might wanna sit down for this.” He suggested hesitantly and she could tell he wanted to avoid this as much as she did. “They didn’t arrest your dad. Between the murder and refusing to leave town, Guy said he’d done too much to harm the city. He was executed.”
No. He had to be lying, he had to be.
“Fuck you.” The words flew out of Arden’s mouth before she could fully comprehend what she’d been told. Her dad was all she had in the world and she refused to believe it would end like this, not when it was her fault that guard was dead, not when she’d been such a terrible daughter. “You’re a liar, you and your brother both.”
He was taken aback by her reaction, understandably so, he hadn’t expected telling her to go down this way. “I wouldn’t lie to you about that.” He insisted, almost offended she’d even consider him capable of something like that. “I’m sorry, I really am, but he’s gone.”
Arden knew he was right, of course she knew he was right. As much as she wanted to deny the truth, it was painfully clear that this wasn’t something she could push to the side. It was strange, for someone who’d already lived such a tragic life, to realise but she’d never really lost someone she’d loved before and she hated how it made her feel.
She’d never been the type of child to cry when things didn’t go her way, she’d never been allowed to cry growing up and if anything, she wasn’t sure she knew how. It was another thing she had Amara to thank for.
But if she was still with her mother and the rest of the gang now, would this have even happened? Her childhood as a raider had been a blur of blood and chems, but there was a part of her deep down, one that betrayed her late father’s morals, that dared to question if that life had been better for them. Maybe the bruises and scars would’ve been worth it, if she hadn’t known anything else, like she did now.
“So what? I’m next, is that it?” Arden shot back, her voice filled with nothing but bitterness and spite. It was better than giving anyone the satisfaction of her heartbreak, of the irreparable pain that threatened to consume her, “I can’t stay here.”
She hadn’t mentioned it to her father at the time, but Arden was certain they wouldn’t be sticking around Diamond City for much longer. David Flores had always been an optimist, the only thing Arden had ever irked Arden when it came to him, convinced they wouldn’t really be torn from their home; what good that blinding optimism had done for him now.
For a while, she’d been secretly putting her things together, to save time when the day inevitably came around - it was that day now.
John seemed taken aback by her words, as though he couldn’t imagine his brother was really a killer, he was in denial and so was she. She couldn’t shake the feeling that she’d make it to the gate and Dad would be waiting for her, it was the only thing keeping her somewhat sane.
“I know a place you can go, ain’t far from here. It’s not.. Well, it’s not as big or protected as here, but it’s the next best settlement in the area, if you ask me.” John informed her, perhaps the first bit of good news she’d heard all day, not that retreating to life in a city sounded appealing to her, but she needed somewhere for now. “The other ghouls that got kicked out? They’re there too.”
Arden slung her bag over her shoulder, she didn’t have much to bring with her but that didn’t really bother her. After all, most of the stuff in her house belonged to her father. He’d been the one who’d wanted to settle down, as for Arden? She always felt this was too good to be true. “Fine, just give me a map and I can figure it out myself.” She stated, holding her hand out.
He shook his head, much to her dismay, “You’re not gonna need a map.” John clarified, causing her to arch an eyebrow at him until he continued, “I’m going too.”
“You’ve got to be kidding me.” Arden let out a scoff, crossing her arms. It was hard to have patience towards the brother of the man who’d killed your father, “I’m not your problem, I don’t need you to hold my hand. Give me a map and fuck off, I’ll go by myself.”
John was fed up already, she could tell and she hoped it meant he’d give in and leave her alone. “I’m going there anyway, you might as well come with me.” He insisted, although Arden wasn’t entirely sure that she bought it. “I could use someone watching my back.”
It was a pathetic attempt at convincing her, yet she had nowhere else to go and nobody to turn to - in a strange sense, it worked. Arden rolled her eyes, “What? Your brother taking up too much space in the Upper Stands?” She remarked.
“He’s not my brother anymore.” John responded shortly, he sighed almost inaudibly. A part of Arden was still almost hoping he’d give up trying to help her, “Let’s just go before it gets dark, alright? I don’t feel like taking my chances against a bunch of mutants if I can’t see them.”
She took one final glance around the only place she’d ever called home. For somewhere she’d claimed to hate so much, she was really going to miss Diamond City. Perhaps that stability her father had seemed to thrive in wasn’t so bad after all, maybe with more time, Arden could’ve called the Great Green Jewel home. But she had no plans of ever returning, even if McDonough let her stay, she couldn’t spend the rest of her life blessing a green wall that hadn’t protected her father.
Arden nodded, “Fine, lead the way.”

Ahh im so happy to find a blog that writes new vegas! I got into it recently and its so fun! Sometimes i get tired of hearing the radio especially if im travelling way too much, so i just start singing any song that pops into my head or talk to the companions like they're real pfft
im also way too cheery for my own good lmao, game devs knew what they were doing when there was no push button for running, you know how many times i ran into mines and kept running 🧍🏽
I kinda wanna know how the companions would react to that? A Courier who practically bounces as they walk and if its not the radio or them talking to fill the silence, its them singing as they shoot radscorpions !! Couriers not half bad at singing either! They mostly sing quietly while walking the mojave for obvious reasons but on a night they feel especially safe, they'll be singing so well people will wonder why they're not making holotapes for mr new vegas to play (esp if they say the radio gets annoying at times)im sorry this is long im just excited to see a new vegas writer that hasnt left their blog 🤧
I'm SO late to this one, I'm so sorry! But I'm so glad you're enjoying New Vegas! It's tied with Red Dead Redemption 2 as one of my favourite video games! And I'm exactly the same when I play New Vegas, the radio's never off and I have no spatial awareness. I hope this was worth the wait!! (Sorry again lmao)

Companions React to a Loud/Chatty Courier (Includes: Arcade, Boone, Cass, Lily, Raul and Veronica)
Arcade Gannon Admittedly, he's a little intimidated at first. He agrees to go with the Courier since there's no point in him sticking around Freeside where he's not helping anyone. He just doesn't realise he's taken up with the most obnoxious person in the West. He's not annoyed by any means, in fact, the singing is actually quite a nice change from the radio. The constant talking is a little overwhelming for him at first though, as someone whose trying his best to keep his past with the Enclave a secret. He knows the Courier means no harm, and he feels a little guilty having to shut down their questions about him, knowing that they only mean well. They do bring out a different side to him he didn't know he had and he sometimes finds himself humming along to either the radio or Six's singing.
Craig Boone At first, he's annoyed by the Courier, but it's not like he has anything better to do. They're his best chance at wiping out the Legion, even if their incessant talking and singing is a little too much for him. He doesn't have a problem with them, but he prefers silence to having to begrudgingly answer someone who talks at a million miles per hour. The only time he'll really voice his complaints is when he actually needs them to be quiet, such as if they're trying to stealthily take out enemies, thankfully the Courier seems to know when to turn off their radio and stop singing. Eventually, the constant chatter and the singing - that he'll never admit is actually enough to rival the radio songs - become background noise he learns to appreciate. He'll never join in with the Courier's singing, but he tries his best to answer their questions and respond to their comments.
Rose of Sharon Cassidy Cass is another one who can't stand the Courier's chatter and singing at first, however, she's more than willing to voice this. A few times, she actually hid the Courier's Pip-Boy while they slept, unfortunately for Cass, they'd already memorised all the lyrics to Johnny Guitar and sung that on repeat for most of the day. It was starting to reach the point where Cass was certain they were doing it on purpose. The singing she hated, but the talking? She didn't mind the talking. In fact, Cass actually looked forward to the talking, she often struggled to make friends, considering her problems with whiskey, so it was nice to just make conversation sometimes. Sure, she'd still keep trying to put an end to the singing, no matter how good it was, but the talking Cass could live with.
Lily Bowen The first time Lily started travelling with the Courier, she was thrilled. Everyone in Jacobstown took life a little too seriously and being with the Courier was a refreshing change for her. Unlike most of the other companions, Lily actually loves the singing and the talking. She'll even suggest that the Courier tries their hand at singing on the Strip, the Tops and the Atomic Wrangler are always looking for new acts after all. Lily will even try and sing along with them, before realising her voice doesn't exactly compliment or rival the Courier's, but so long as they encourage to join in, she always will. The talking is just as lovely for her, it's nice to know that the Courier still cares about their grandma, even if they are growing up so fast.
Raul Tejada Never in all his years of being alive has he met someone like the Courier. It was one thing that they managed to deal with Tabitha, but the fact that they did it with Radio New Vegas playing on full blast from their Pip-Boy? Raul wasn't sure whether to be impressed or absolutely terrified. He leans more towards the latter once he starts travelling with them, struggling to keep up with the Courier constantly asking him questions about where he's from and what his life was like before the war and how he turned ghoul. Like Arcade, Raul finds it overwhelming and eventually asks politely if the Courier can calm down a little with all the questions, thankful when they actually oblige. He learns to love the Courier in spite of their loud habits, even being happy to fix their Pip-Boy when it stops letting them connect to the radio stations. It's against his better judgement, but they seem grateful for it.
Veronica Santangelo She immediately bonds with the Courier over their love for Radio New Vegas. Veronica wishes she had her own Pip-Boy so she could listen to the radio in her own free time, since lugging a radio around the Mojave Desert doesn't seem like the best idea. She absolutely loves the Courier's singing too, insisting that they don't forget her once they make it big in some bar in New Reno. She also tries her best to be the Courier's backup singer when wandering the wasteland, however, she accidentally stumbles up on a lot of her lyrics and trying to pronounce "Agua Fria" at the start of Big Iron quickly becomes the bane of her existence. Veronica also loves to gossip with the Courier, about her love life - and the Courier's if they're willing to disclose it - and all her least favourite things about her commanding officers in the Brotherhood. Whenever she travels with Six, Veronica manages to get a lot of off her chest

mr. house with a pre-war courier? (idfk how it would work, maybe another cryo vault on the west coast.(maybe the courier is an business exc too??))
Okay, this is making me wanna boot up New Vegas and start a Mr. House playthrough (I'm ngl I've only ever completed the game with the NCR, but I'm working on a Yes Man game atm LMAO)
//
Mr. House Meets a Pre-War Courier (Robert House x GN!Courier - can be platonic or romantic)
House had thought he'd recognised the Courier's name, but he could never have been too sure.
After all, 200 years had passed, everyone he'd known before the war was either a ghoul or dead.
He'd heard the Courier's name before though, recalling that once one belonging to an old business executive.
Surely that was just a coincidence though, if there was still someone alive who'd had almost as much influence as him before the war, he would've known already.
Then the time came for him to meet the Courier and for the first time in his life, Robert House was left speechless.
Of course, his first question - asides from wanting to know the location of the Platinum Chip - is how the Courier managed to survive the bombs and not age the last 200 years.
The answer leaves him even more confused and almost embarrassed, wondering how there'd been a cryo-vault on the West Coast without him knowing.
Once he's done discussing business matters, House is somewhat willing to make conversation about life before the war.
It's not like he has anyone else to talk to it about, so even though he'd rather keep things professional, it's nice to reminisce on the past, even if just for a moment.
Not only that, but he and the Courier worked in similar professions, so being able to relate in that sense is nice too.
It only makes him want the Courier on his side even more. Not that it would be difficult to dispose of them if it came down to it, but he'd rather keep them around.
Besides, he liked the company. He couldn't deny that, even with his Securitrons, his life felt quite isolating.
So he plans to keep the Courier around for as long as he can, hoping they don't give him a reason not to trust them.

Hey, could I have some reactions to the male companions *coughValentinecough* reactions to seeing a female Sole Survivor outside of their radiation suits for the first time?
This is actually a really cool idea!! and I'm loving the appreciation that Nick's getting right now (Bethesda make him romanceable NOW)
//
Male Companions React to Seeing Sole Outside Her Radiation Suit
(Includes: Danse, Deacon, Hancock, MacCready, Nick and Preston)
Paladin Danse He can relate to always wearing a suit that hides most of his appearance. However, Sole has seen Danse out of his power armour a fair few times while they've been travelling together, he's never seen Sole in anything but her radiation suit. He won't say anything at first, wanting to keep their relationship strictly professional, but Sole may catch him staring for a little too long from time to time, before snapping out of it and pretending nothing had happened.
Deacon He'd definitely already made his guesses on what Sole looks like outside of the suit. His personal favourite theory - that Glory and Tom got sick of hearing about - was that Sole had six heads and fourteen arms coming out of her stomach. Still, he can't deny that he's somewhat taken aback when Sole eventually does take her radiation suit off. He'll make a comment on how he's relieved she has a normal amount of limbs, to which he'll refuse to elaborate on. If they're in Railroad HQ, Glory will definitely smack him across the head.
Hancock While he never would've openly admitted, despite a few passing comments about Sole's 'interesting get up', Hancock was so curious about what Sole actually looked like under her suit. He would've never outright asked though, not wanting to come off as weird. When Sole does take her suit off around him, depending on how close they are, Hancock might mention how he prefers them without the suit. He won't want to make Sole feel uncomfortable though, especially if they're not very close, so he'll leave it at that.
MacCready He has no idea why Sole insists on wearing her radiation suit everywhere. The Glowing Sea, sure. Boston Commons, maybe. But Diamond City? If MacCready ever brings up Sole's suit, it'll be more about how he doesn't understand why they wear it everywhere. When Sole finally takes off her suit in his presence, he's initially just relieved it doesn't look like he's travelling the Commonwealth with an alien, then he realises how beautiful Sole actually is. It makes travelling with her afterwards a little more awkward - for him - often finding himself quite flustered around her. He just hopes that Sole hasn't caught on yet, or that she ever will.
Nick Valentine With his own get up being rather unconventional - how often do you see a synth detective? - Nick actually appreciates that Sole only ever goes around in a radiation suit. It somehow balances out how unusual they both appear alone and makes him feel just a little less abnormal. Admittedly, he is quite curious as to what Sole actually looks like, but he'd never outright ask or make her feel like she had to show him. When Sole does take her suit off, he's pleasantly surprised, but he won't mention it, wanting to avoid making her uncomfortable, even if he does think Sole's a sight for sore eyes. Whether Sole decides to keep the suit off or she puts it back on right after, Nick won't mind either way, he's just happy to have the company.
Preston Garvey When Preston first met Sole outside the Museum of Freedom, he was almost dead certain she was an alien, seeing her take down all those raiders in her radiation suit. He's only ever mentioned Sole's choice in clothing a few times, mainly wondering how she got into that power armour when she took on the Deathclaw. He'd never actually ask Sole to take her suit off, worrying she might not feel comfortable enough to, so when she finally does, he's relieved that she trusts him enough to take it off around him. Sure, her beauty is a bonus, but he decides to keep that part to himself for now.
