I really appreciate how Farscape managed to oust Captain Crais to up the ante for a bigger and scarier villain at the end of season 1 start of season 2 while still keeping him around. Also the comedy of the bad guys once again chasing John Crichton specifically because of a complete misunderstanding is really good

unpopular opinion but 4k ultra realistic graphics are such a turn off for me. either leave your graphics in late 00s/very early 10s or stylize that shit.

fallout 4 hurt my eyes and i was only playing for 30 minutes

The more I think about the more I think it’s better if fallout maintains a gameplay distance from the pre-war world

i hate all FNV mods that restore/add an option to convince Mr. House to broker a truce between himself and the Brotherhood of Steel because it's not just a symptom of a completionist, goopy goblin gamer brain that doesn't want to miss out on any of the CONTENT, but also because Mr. House's inflexibility on his desire to see the Brotherhood of Steel exterminated is such a significant character moment. Because it's a moment where this autocrat who views himself as purely rational, purely objective, and purely motivated by an altruistic desire to protect (what he thinks are) the best interests of humanity is forced to let his mask slip in front of the lackey on which he completely depends. He has zero reasonable rationale to want the Brotherhood destroyed and he knows it, he just hates them, and he hates them just because he thinks that they're just fucking lame. He, personally, finds the cultish medieval technoknight schtick obnoxious enough to justify total obliteration, and the fact that he will not back down on this is supposed to be revealing! It makes sense, too, if you understand how aesthetically driven his vision for the future of Vegas and humanity is and how badly a bunch of LARPers in power armor wandering around outside clashes with that aesthetic (he is, literally, a RETVRN guy, except he wants to "retvrn" to everybody looking like they're going to see the Rat Pack perform in concert). Mr. House's stubbornness on this issue is intentionally frustrating, especially if you're someone who up to this point may have found him otherwise agreeable! The Brotherhood of Steel is also something of a mirror, or a competitor even, to Mr. House's vision of himself as the sole worthy heir to the splendor of pre-war technology and control thereof, but that's actually far less important than the fact that he just hates their pussy

Okay so. I think the whole "Bethesda does not GET Fallout 1" is sometimes a bit exaggerated, but this was a bit that is hard not to read as "missing the point so hard"

so in short. the creative lead for Fallout 4, in response to the positive buzz the tv show was getting, decided to share what he thought was a neat tidbit of information that was not mentioned in the final product. Which was to reveal a certain unnamed background character was the Male Protagonist/Husband from Fallout 4, Nate.

This in and of itself is not uncommon. all sorts of big multimedia franchise have the writers pick up random background characters and say "okay, but what if...?" or use them to try to make the world feel connected as it grows bigger. Star wars did it, Star Trek has done it. It's nothing new, weird nor necessarily bad.

so... what's the issue?

here is the intro for the original Fallout game

In this, we see a depiction of post-annexed Canada as a soldier in POwer Armor executes someone while his companion looks. this is all through the framing device of being american military propaganda.

That companion, according to the Emil Pagliarulo, is Nate, one of the two protagonists you play in Fallout 4. he clarifies Nate did not shoot, seemingly aware of what a bad look that would be, but he obviously missed it only meant Nate was laughing his ass at the dead Canadian.

The whole scene is "Starship Troopers" levels of Satire. it is a depiction and criticism of the American militarism and authoritarianism, before showing the audience how that lead to the present day america being a shithole destroyed because of armageddon.

And look, nobody cares about Nate or his wife. they are nothing characters who you forget what their life before was the second the game stops handholding you and you can stop pretending you give a rat's ass about their missing child. But it is something weird that Pagliarulo thought this was some neat bit of continuity he was sharing with people, then was surprised when everyone took it to mean Nate was a War Criminal.

He quickly backpedalled from that one, explaining he did not mean Canon canon. and something about how everyone makes their own character. but the interesting bit, again, for me was that him further explaining that their idea was that Nate's life during the war was Hell. with that being another day.

Except, again, what we see in the scene he points out is a (theoretical) Nate who is explicitly complicit with the american military complex, celebrating and laughing when commiting horrible acts to their fellow men.

And is like, it's a minor thing really, but it's odd that the writer for that game missed the point of that scene so hard, he did not realize he was making Nate a war criminal until right after he wrote that tweet.

I've heard about this multiple times since yesterday and I'm STILL in SHOCKED disbelief #When I KNEW /NOTHING/ about Fallout one of the things I was vaguely aware of was that the original 2 were critiques of american militarism #And people didn't like that Bethesda changed that in their entries #And then I played the games and I understand. I understand SO WELL. #Like. Naturally EVERYTHING made by americans is shaped a little by 2001- that's a given I've come to accept with American media #(& it happens in Canadian media too) But. The changes? They are outright jarring and show a lack of spine and a lack of give a fuck #because the money will keep rolling in regardless #HOW. IS. THIS. THEIR. HEAD. WRITER???? There are SO many things that can be said about the male sole survivor’s canon backstory (either of them, really) but the fact that he’s a soldier is already so incredibly damning. You’ve lost at the starting point. 

I don’t care if his planned speech was radical and would have been considered treasonous. I don’t want some wishy-washy “speak truth to power” BS. Fallout 1 starts it’s intro with soldiers executing Canadians in the street while laughing in some “go get em boys!” propaganda reels. I don’t want a pre-war soldier protagonist unless he was kicked out of the military for refusing to commit war crimes and beating the shit out of his commanding officer instead, Doomguy style.

On the one-hand I think that the commonly-memed-upon detail that Elder Maxson is only 20 despite presenting himself like a battle-hardened grizzled 40-something is grounds for really rich characterization and storytelling, because it reframes many of his more over-the-top actions as the grandiose performativity of a young-adult massively in over his head and trying to playing catch-up, an exalted figurehead who's more the product of the authoritarian cult he's ostensibly leading than it's architect. On the other hand I also think there's a really excellent chance that they just weren't paying attention to how old he was supposed to be

#he's SO interesting if you're a loser who overthinks characters like I do #I've said it before but who and what Maxson is is EXTREMELY on show during Blind Betrayal (intentional writing or not) #he's SO used to being obeyed without question. To being surrounded by people who will tell him he's the best genius ever to exist #He's practically the ordianed boyking of their cult. So the TINIEST bit of pushback FLOORS him because he's NOT USED TO IT #and he is clearly a young man in over his head full of bluster and ego trying to keep it together with the weight of the WORLD on his head #I absolutely LOATHE him but like. In a pitying way. He's a tragic and sympathetic figure but also a bigot and a scourge on the Commonwealth #BUT. That second part is a result of his raising! Because the Brotherhood DEFINITELY went back to is FO1/2 roots a little when Lyons droppe #Not entirely but they slid in a very different much more authoritarian isolationist and narrow-minded way of thinking #a ''Our way or the highway NO compromises AT ALL'' way of thinking #anyways. He's VERY interesting and I feel SO sorry for him. I still prefer blowing up his fancy blimp over other endings though. #fallout #fo4

Next Gen Fallout 4 Update (PC)

The one good thing is the mod community watched the Skyrim Fishing Update happen so we can kinda prep.

Problem: The next gen update could break your mods.

Solution: Avoid the update and use F4SE.

Go to Steam Library, hit the gear icon on the Fallout 4 page. Properties > Updates > "Only update this game when I launch it."

Ensure you are launching the game via F4SE.

Result: Steam will not download background updates of Fallout 4. F4SE does not boot the game with Steam, so you have successfully bypassed any issue/mod breaking caused by the update.

Why shouldn't I update? Sounds counterintuitive not to update, but mod authors are hobbyists and regular people like you and me; it will take time for authors to "catch up" and release updates.

When to update Fallout 4 on PC again: Up to you. Many people playing Skyrim SE still play on an older version to protect the mods they have, many mod authors have released newer versions of mods to catch up with the update.

New to modding, don't use Vortex/MO2/F4SE, but you are worried about your mods? Now's the time to install F4SE! I'm not affiliated with them, but I can attest The Midnight Ride's recommendations will give you a great basegame vanilla+ experience. If anything, it sets you up with utilities and fixes that you may not already know about.

Other things you can do, not necessary but useful: Update your current modlist! Take the time to ensure things are working. It is better to have things fixed up now and workable than having an updated game and a bunch of mods that suddenly no longer work. Look into using tools like CLAS and xEdit. These can help troubleshoot and resolve conflicts.
