My absolute hottest take is that, from a culturally relative perspective, no food is bad. None of it. It's an expression of culture, art, history, ecology, material conditions, subjective taste. It's all inedible pap to somebody and the taste of childhood for someone else. Americans be eating cheesed burger. Pea wet is as good as gravy in Wigan. The French eat snails and the Inuit eat seal, the Germans eat sauerkraut and the Russians drink kvass, the Inca ate cavy and the Romans ate flamingo. People around the world have been eagerly awaiting their serving of simple bread or thin porridge or fermented milk product or pickled whatever-the-fuck since we learned to cook food over fire. We all love the slop we grew up eating. Food is a reflection of millennia of culture and loving human artistic expression. Attempting to extrapolate largely harmless online food banter into actual serious comparative rankings or half-baked critical analyses of cultures based on how much you subjectively don't like what they eat is a miserable way to live. Live a little. Peace and love on the only planet with food.
I do think the reason why “take things slow” breaks so quickly (though I am not of the opinion that Calypso’s Birthday immediately follows that conversation) is because they both realize that taking things slow almost meant that they never made love at all and that they both nearly died without experiencing that with each other. It’s not heat of the moment but “I almost lost you without ever knowing what you felt like.”
And that’s a facet of the life they were living and yet another reason why they both needed to stop. Would it have been better if they’d been able to wait, especially since Ed was so terrified Stede was going to leave again and badly needed to know that he wasn’t? Yes. But they also realized that waiting almost meant never.
No, y'know what? I love Season 2. I thought there was nothing wrong with Season 2 until I saw folks on here complaining about Season 2. I don't even care about the changes they might or might not have had to make, or the occasional pacing issues (Season 1 has pacing issues too, in places, but it's still great!).
THIS was the season that changed me. THIS was the one that made me go "huh, I need to think more about who I am."
Really tired of all the various caveats of "if only..." and "well, if Max hadn't..." and "this plot would've worked better..."
No. I love it. If it has to end there, I'm glad that's where it ends. I'd love to have more, but this worked so fucking well.
It's been a hectic year, but I'm really proud of what I've accomplished. Couldn't even reasonably fit in all my treats from this year into this video, hope I didn't miss anyone's favorite!
Thanks to everyone who's followed along with my experiments, I appreciate your support so much and I hope I've made your year a little sweeter 🥹💕 Here's to more fun creations in 2024!
Y’know what does drive me crazy about the whole “Izzy has a redemption arc and then they kill him off!” thing? He is very much not sorry until the end. He does not attempt to redress any of his past behavior with the crew or with Stede or with Ed until the very very end. The closest he comes is to tell Stede that he “gets” Stede and Ed’s relationship (which is another narcissistic centralizing of himself, as though he’s offering Stede permission to be with Ed). Even, sorry, his dressing up and singing is centralizing him and his healing, not what he has done to others.
Meanwhile, Ed DOES try to make amends. In the gravy basket, we see him grappling with what he knows he’s done and how he thinks that makes him a monster. He tries to apologize later - confusedly, imperfectly, and inadequately, but he badly wants to make things better if he can. He asks Stede for guidance in what to do next, because he never apologized when he was captain and he doesn’t really know how. He listens to Fang. He tries to give Lucius catharsis. He’s explicitly trying to give back to the crew with Calypso’s Birthday.
Izzy doesn’t redeem himself because until the end he refuses to face the fact that he might need redemption. He does heal. He does try to do better, but at no point is he really truly sorry until he dies, and maybe not even then.
It’s actually pretty realistic to them both, but it very much needs to be discussed more because this is not just an interpretation. The text absolutely structures it like this.
Okay but imagine the whiplash Zheng went through. All she knew about Ed all season was that he's Stede's man and he was in some dark shit at the start. Tries to insult Stede by calling him his "serial killer boyfriend." Probably knew of him only from the Blackbeard legend.
And then she gets to meet him and at first he's this cool guy on the battlefield. She has to fight for her fucking life while he kisses his boyfriend for a WHILE. Turns out he's a fun giggly guy and they have a nice time complimenting each other. And then he calls Stede zaddy in front of the entire crowded room. Super loudly. Entirely shameless. And all this happens in the span of like two hours.
Like what kind of impression can you even have of someone after all that
Hey is there a shot of Stede’s hair while he’s lying on his side? Only time I can think of is in bed with Mary, but he’s wearing his wee willy winkie hat.
