when I see something dated 2019 I think “oh that’s not too long ago” and then I remember that 2019 was not only five years ago but those five years have somehow contained several lifetimes

mizu is a woman who believes herself to have been conceived through violence and whose ethnicity makes her even more vulnerable than other girls, all while living in a time period of extreme sexism that severely limits her options and freedom, and so she is forced to conceal her identity for both personal safety and to be able to achieve her goals
mizu is a trans man who is wrestling with what it means to be a half-white man when he loathes and fears the white man who created him all while he attempts to find a foothold in the hyper-masculine world of samurai
mizu is a nonbinary biracial person who lives between the lines of society in all possible ways and is at constant war with the conflicting sides of themself and seeks some way to find a sense of being whole
mizu is all of them. mizu is a marginalized person and a fucking badass who a lot of people are going to relate to and see themselves reflected within and while it appears the show is going with the first option I don't think it's wrong for anyone to use the lens of the show to explore their own identity or to feel empowered
and also it's fun to explore how the story would change (or stay the same) when viewing mizu as a gender other than cis woman

so bf of taigen to recover from life threatening wounds, just so he can hike all the way to kohama village from master eiji’s forge, buy the best food you can possibly find there, hike all the way back, and then proceed to promptly plop said food right in front of mizu and watch her eat all of it. dosen’t even blink. those dumplings are a childhood nostalgia food for him and he did not eat a single one. literally recovered from his injuries just enough to leave on his own, solely so he could go get food for mizu, and only for mizu. he didn’t get dumplings for anyone else, not even himself. he hates kohama, but he’ll go walk straight into the village centre that smells like the fish on his dad’s fists, just to purchase the only good thing from his childhood in that place, proceed to enjoy none of it, and offer it all to mizu with absolutely no expectations.

Me: Mizu’s gender in Blue Eye Samurai is complex and ambiguous even to him/her/them and that’s part of the richness of the story, not a reason for the fandom to get upset at one another or especially at the show creators for saying they envisioned Mizu as a woman struggling to survive in a society hostile towards her racial background and women in general. Mizu’s upbringing was, to put it lightly, supremely fucked up and I respect the show for leaving Mizu’s gender identity and sexual preferences fairly ambiguous because I think they’re ambiguous even to Mizu, who doesn’t exactly lead a life or display an internality in which this question is any kind of priority for Mizu to answer, even if Mizu had a cultural context that gave the tools the answer it, which Mizu does not. Mizu’s relationship with all aspects of their identity, including their race, gender, sexuality is an ongoing question and dialogue being actively explored in the show itself, without a strict conclusion offered, and a conclusion might never be offered, even in later seasons, as Mizu continues to grapple with identity. In this essay, I will…
Also me: Mizu’s gender is revenge.

taigen is sooooo funny. bitchiest man i've ever seen. he fucked and ran. he's obsessed with honor. he's the only one allowed to kill his rival. he makes silly little sarcastic jokes. he endured torture because his rival "deserved better" than being killed by the men torturing him. he got a boner from homoerotic wrestling. he's pathetic and i adore him.

i can't stress it enough how crazy the love triangle situation is. mizu and akemi have a slow motion romcom first glance at each other. mizu and taigen are enemies to lovers. mizu taunts akemi about taigen while wearing his scarf. mizu imagines taigen while seeing a threesome. mizu and akemi have sex scenes juxtaposed with each other. taigen and mizu's brawl is an obvious parallel to mizu and mikio. "this isn't over" "i know". both could happen. neither could happen. all could happen all at once. and i'm watching it all like this

If my wife handed me my ass in combat and then kissed me after pointing a katana at my throat, I would recognize the gesture as the peak of romance it is and would fall even more in love with her. Rip to that guy Mizu married for like a year but I'm different.

Growing up Mormon AND with long hair that I didn’t cut because of pressure from my mom, to me the metaphor here is pretty obvious… you can read it how you want though.
