Meet the judges from the Pensole LEAD Final Presentation.
Twenty-five young aspiring footwear designers, coached by Edwards, presented innovative footwear design, development, marketing, sales and buying ideas at the Revere Hotel in front of a high profile crowd of city officials, nonprofit leaders and industry experts. The presentations were a culmination of a hands-on, intensive, two-week footwear master class–called PENSOLE | LEAD held at MIT. The program’s goal was to introduce a new model to close the skill gap, create employable youth by exposing them to careers they never knew existed. Along the way, the program provided these future leaders with insights on how these transferable skills could prepare them for college and open their eyes to a possible career in the footwear industry or related industries.

Leading Disruption in the Boston Design Industry
Boston-area youth engaged in a once in a lifetime opportunity to break into the footwear design business at MIT
Boston, MA. – Long-time (retired) Nike shoe designer D’Wayne Edwards was lauded by Boston Mayor Martin J. Walsh on Friday, July 11 for creating real solutions for the 21st century economy in Boston by cultivating the top footwear designers of tomorrow.
The 15-19 year olds students were hand-selected the from greater Boston area from a field of 300+ to receive scholarships provided by Mass Impact. The two week intensive product design course included visits from top designers for Reebok, New Balance, Converse, Puma, Nike and Jordan.
Four teams presented their final work to the 200 person crowd at the final event. The winning team shared a limited edition shoe designed for a millennial urban male, inspired by the city of Boston and the MBTA. Outcomes of the presentation include a network of education and community leaders who have pledged to further the dialogue for more real-world project-based learning.

Team Four’s winning footwear design
D’Wayne Edwards, a celebrated member of the global footwear community for the last 25 years, founded PENSOLE to give talented young design students—regardless of socioeconomic background—an opportunity to learn from the industry’s best, without financial barriers, and to provide the industry with a farm system for the next generation of footwear designers.
LEAD is co-sponsored by AbekaM Consulting | Foundation and is a Project of Think Big Dream Big. Additional program supporters who are working to further pathways to college and careers for Boston's youth include the Boston Foundation, Barr Foundation and Boston After School and Beyond.
With far reaching implications from the career to college pipelines, the model of PENSOLE Academy in Portland, OR has proven impacts in fostering talent and has led to design jobs at large global footwear brands. Since the first class in 2010, more than 60 Academy graduates have been placed professionally, full-time or as interns, for footwear companies worldwide, including Columbia Sportswear, Timberland, Converse, AND1, New Balance, Wolverine, Cole Haan, Under Armour, Keen, Ariat, Stride Rite, adidas, JORDAN, Kenneth Cole, Reebok and Nike.
