The way people talk about happily ever after I used to think why do people hate it, why is it just frozen moment and if we where to continue on from that moment it would it not be so happy.

When I think of Cinderella she is the quintessential poster girl of a character who lived happily ever after. When people talk about this character they think of the Disney’s trilogy but only the first one since it was widely available. If we look at Cinderella, in the first film cinderella didn’t have courage nor bravery, because she didn’t have reason to her mother and father died. Her stepmother in her must vulnerable abused her to the point she shrunk her own existence nor allowed herself to even express those emotions which shows her mental strength. When she has the chance to see and experience more she allows herself thinking that’s all she has but when she realise that there is more for herself to live in as well she finally takes the step to do so in the most crucial moment because she finally allowed her self to have another happily ever after, not settling for that brief frozen moment. We see this later in the second film where she has more autonomy, her father in law is unhappy with her decisions she trusts herself and goes own to do what she want and not follow old patterns because she’s no longer needs to shrink herself.

I realised something a happily ever after is different for each person, we have many happily ever afters in our own lives and sometimes it’s tragic. When I refer on my life so far, I think of the tragic young girl who only knew violence in every form it could be, if someone asked such an intimate question and I answered honestly I would say, death in whatever way was possible a brief break from my life. I came to a realisation I achieved that, I was granted my happily ever after. Not in the way I thought I would, the violence stopped and I was given those small moments, I was given hope. Now if I was asked that question it would be to have my own family hopefully with children where we just explore the intricacies of life.

I think what I wish to say is that happily ever after doesn’t happen that one time. It doesn’t mean bad things stop happening but we gain the courage to be ourselves as much as possible. It’s the driver for our hope for more and our experience for more. Has we achieve one happily ever after, there is another on its way.
