Does the way I wear my hair make me a better person?
Does the way I wear my hair make me a better friend?
Does the way I wear my hair determine my integrity?
I am expressing my creativity…

I am the soul that lives within.

Monday, November 23: Skyclad, “Gammadion Seed”

Prince of the Poverty Line was the album that firmly established folk metal as its own sound, though Skyclad at that point was still largely rooted in thrash.  To be sure, tracks like “Gammadion Seed” weren’t quite as frenzied and raw as Wayward Sons of Mother Earth, but Cath Howell’s violin wasn’t quite fully integrated into the mix just yet.  But the thing about Skyclad was that they were on their own trip from day one, and the combined talents of Martin Walkyier, Graeme English and Steve Ramsey resulted in something that, while having bits of Sabbat and Satan (which would’ve been exciting in itself), was quite unique to metal at the time.  So with “Gammadion Seed”, there was Walkyier’s unparalleled snarl and thoughtful lyrics, a propulsive backbeat and aggressive riffing that was thrash in its underpinning but also traveling in newer directions, while the fiddles added a bit of flair in the back.  Over their next couple records, Skyclad would firmly lock down their sound, though Prince of the Poverty Line remained a key record in the foundation of folk metal.

“Everybody, put up your hands. Say, ‘I don’t wanna be in love. I don’t wanna be in love.’ Feel the beat now. If you’ve got nothing left, say, ‘I don’t wanna be in love. I don’t wanna be in love.’ Back it up now. You’ve got a reason to live. Say, ‘I don’t wanna be in love. I don’t wanna be in love.’ Feelin’ good now. Don’t be afraid to get down. Say, ‘I don’t wanna be in love. I don’t wanna be in love.’”
