@gatesofsummerexchange’s gift reveal for @greyelven  ↳ Everyone in Middle-Earth is Brown [100/?]: High King Gil-Galad
From Imladris they crossed the Misty Mountains by many passes and marched down the River Anduin, and so came at last upon the host of Sauron on Dagorlad, the Battle Plain, which lies before the gate of the Black Land. All living things were divided in that day, and some of every kind, even of beasts and birds, were found in either host, save the Elves only. They alone were undivided and followed Gil-galad.

Fingon the Valiant
“ Of all the children of Finwe he is justly most renowned: for his valour was as a fire and yet as steadfast as the hills of stone; wise he was and skilled in voice and hand; troth and justice he loved and bore good will to all, both Elves and Men, hating Morgoth only; he sought not his own, neither power nor glory, and death was his reward.”

I got a bunch of wonderful requests and ideas to kill my artblock and I chose precisely 0 (zero) of them in favour of blacking out from 9pm to 6am, regaining consciousness only to discover Fingon the Valiant in full ridiculous armour on my screen so. Here!

After peeking at the survey this afternoon (May 15, 2022), we’re overjoyed to report that we’re almost halfway to the number of respondents we were hoping to hear from about race and racial diversity in Tolkien fan art, particularly regarding Black Fingon. Thank you all so much for taking our survey and sharing it! And if you haven’t taken it yet, or need a link to share, here it is! We would greatly appreciate your thoughts as we work on a book chapter regarding Tolkien fan art.

russingon + 1970s ⭐ requested by @arofili
Long before, in the bliss of Valinor, before Melkor was unchained, or lies came between them, Fingon had been close in friendship with Maedhros and though he knew not yet that Maedhros had not forgotten him at the burning of the ships, the thought of their ancient friendship stung his heart. Therefore he dared a deed which is justly renowned among the feats of the princes of the Noldor: alone, and without the counsel of any, he set forth in search of Maedhros
- J.R.R. Tolkien, The Silmarillion, “Of the Return of the Noldor”
[ID: A picspam, consisting of 12 images, for Maedhros and Fingon. The images are in shades of blue and gold. Here’s what they depict:
The head of a brown bird of prey
A painting of a sky with golden clouds
A statue of two people, kissing
A blue field with text on it reading “Maedhros & Fingon”
Ice crystals
Black text on white background reading “History has its eyes on you”
Two hands holding each other
A closeup on a golden chandelier
Text on a blue field reading “leaders of the Noldor”
A neon sign reading “Golden Tragedy” with only the letters spelling “Golden Age” turned on
Golden stars on a garland
A mountain shrouded in mist
End ID]

Calling Tolkien Fan Artists!
(And enjoyers of Tolkien fan art!)
Utúlie’n aurë! Do you interact with or create fan art based on the work of J.R.R. Tolkien, particularly his Silmarillion? If you do, then we’d love to hear from you!
We are working on a book chapter about racial diversity and racebending in Tolkien fan art, and we are hoping to hear from fans and creators directly through this survey.
Who can participate?
Anyone who interacts with (i.e., likes, reblogs, comments on) and/or creates Tolkien fan art, and is over 18 years of age, is welcome to take this survey.
How can I participate?
If you fit those criteria above and want to participate, awesome! This survey will ask some broad questions about Tolkien fan art and racially diverse depictions of Tolkien characters. Some questions are multiple choice, and some are open answer; most are completely optional. For those open questions, you can share as much or as little as you choose to.
How long will it take?
This survey is entirely online and includes about 15 questions (the exact number you’ll see depends on which parts of Tolkien fandom you’re most active in). It should take about 20 minutes to complete, dependent on how much detail you want to share. No identifying or contact information is collected. You can skip most questions you don’t want to answer or quit the survey at any time if you choose to.
Who is running this survey?
Both researchers, Megan B. Abrahamson and Maria K. Alberto, are Tolkien and fan studies scholars (plus Tolkien fans!). We are conducting this survey as part of our work on a chapter for a forthcoming collection on race and Tolkien’s work.
