Caring for a Money Tree
I don’t have a money tree, but was compiling some advice about taking care of one – so now I’m sharing it with you all. Keep in mind that this isn’t from personal experience. It’s always a good idea to look around for multiple articles and blog posts when taking care of an unfamiliar plant. Light: Money trees like bright light, but can also survive in low light.  If you have a smart phone,…

August 2022: Sad state Of the Garden
August 2022: Sad state Of the Garden
My garden has been getting ready for Halloween early, and by that I mean that at least half of it has died. Even some of my willow saplings – and indeed, even my spider plant! I am not terribly surprised, unfortunately. All the plants have been through a lot of suffering this year. Unfortunately, cascading problems mean that not every plant can bounce back. Some were too young when they had to…

RandoReview: Spooky Brew Gonesh Incense
I love incense, and normally I stick with HEM incense – but I am also a huge Halloween enthusiast, so I could not resist giving Gonesh’ new ‘Spooky Brew’ a try. The art: I love a classic haunted house, and I like the simple color scheme. I am used to incense coming in much plainer packaging, so this is a fun novelty. The scent: Apple cinammon is a pretty common scent, and just as likely to be…

1/12th scale project - The Potter’s House
1/12th scale project – The Potter’s House
I have been enjoying making miniature pottery, and in general have been interested in making dollhouse miniatures. I thought it would be fun to make a little setting to showcase them, so what better than a little potter’s workshop? Since I love Rien Poortvliet’s gnomes, I decided to go with whatever scale would fit them. While David the Gnome is Swedish, gnomes live all over the world. So i…

I am still marveling at plants. I am just still stuck in moving mode, and have been since March. I’ve been way more active on Instagram with just posting photos of plants I find that I can confidently identify.
I am still hard at work trying to get started again with filming puppets and making the podcast - which is still stuck in the ‘fleshing out details’ phase.
Life is tough and I hope the best for everyone right now. ❤️

Brutal Squirrel Fights, Hummingbirds, and the Vine Maple Canopy
When I realized that apartments were now the only affordable places to rent in my price range, I assumed that I’d be lucky to even have a foot of space outside to grow something in. Somehow, that did not come to be – I found something with a perfectly sized balcony, and it just so happens to overlooks a gap above a beautiful tree-top canopy of vine maples. Now, not only can I continue to garden,…

Last day of spring
The leaves are rustling and the many birds calling out their evening songs, while the woodpeckers play percussion. I am settled in enough that I can nestle in with my container plants in the evening, enjoying the beautiful show. It’s a pretty small garden especially considering that the red shelf on the left is almost entirely houseplants for the inside. Everything else is the hardier species…

6/2/22 THE RUBUS PARADE
It’s still spring, but the air certainly feels like Summer! The leaves are all fully green now, and the grass smells sweet in the warm sun. Daytime temps in the 60s, overcast skies leading to muggy weather, but also some beautiful dry days with blue sky for miles. Early spring’s constant rains are over, so now we wait to see how hot summer and early autumn will be. I am most excited to see…

Here, have a bunch of hyacinth and rhodedendron photos! I am trying to get back into regular posting. I’ve lately been putting photos up on Instagram, but I do miss also having them here.
I’ve been getting out for walks every day, and also using this opportunity to get to know my new camera.

Seed Cataloguing Oops: Technical difficulties
Seed Cataloguing Oops: Technical difficulties
I’ve got a podcast episode recorded, and I’ve made a lot of progress in the garden that I want to talk about. But chaos being what it is, I only have time for a quick update. Since fall of last year, I’ve been working on seed cataloguing spreadsheet programs. I started with an old version of Excel, but switched over to Google Sheets because it had features I needed. I finished well before…

Pulling up a scraggly beet and mystery roots! At first I thought they were carrots or parsnips, but it turns out they are actually Swiss chard roots! They smelled earthy like beets when I snapped the end of one of the roots, so that was a major clue.

This is a tendency I have, and that I think goes unspoken, for speaking up on behalf of groups of people too. According to a certain worldview, everything needs its right to exist to be justified, especially if we want resources to be sent its way. It’s an impulse to reason with the cold, unfeeling side of humanity that will only respond to what value it can extract out of anything.
It’s a toxic impulse that comes from a place of love, a worldview conditioned by artificial deprivation. The truth is that everyone and everything is a vital part of existence, and has a natural right to exist for itself.
Saddest thing ever is reading an academic paper about a threatened or declining species where you can tell the author is really trying to come up with ways the animal could hypothetically be useful to humans in a desperate attempt to get someone to care. Nobody gives a shit about the animals that “don’t affect” us and it seriously breaks my heart
