Raúl Esparza is a fucking national treasure.

So right before the matinee today they came over the speaker and announced, “Raúl Esparza has a throat infection,” and paused and my heart fucking stopped, but then continued, “but he has graciously decided to perform this afternoon.”

And the whole thing was so emotional. He fought so hard to put on a good show and still did such a phenomenal job despite clearly being in pain.

But the thing that really got to us was the cast. Karen sang some of his parts for him and whenever he’d finish a number, whoever he was sitting next to would pat his knee or rub his back encouragingly. And after “Pity the Child,” which he killed despite his broken voice, the whole cast clapped for him and a lot of them were crying.

Then came the curtain call. Karen usually comes out last but I could see side stage and she kind of shoved Raúl aside a little bit and ran out before he could so that he could be last and get the recognition he deserved. He gave the cutest little embarrassed head shake at that.

So, I love him now even more than I did, which I didn’t think was possible. He knew how important the show was, he knew how many people were there to see him, and rallied so hard. It says a lot about him that he’d do that.

TL;DR: Raúl is fucking amazing and perfect.
