i will never understand the people who think madoka the better genre deconstructing magical girl anime when compared to utena. utena actually engages directly with shoujo tropes that were unchallenged staples of every major shoujo/magical girl anime that had come out previously and laid bare for us to see the misogynistic roots that formed these concepts. it portrays the same types of toxic relationships that you could find being heavily romanticized on any other shoujo at the time and takes them to their logical extreme. i don't see madoka doing anything like that or as being anything deeper than just a dark and gritty take at these magical girl clichés
