I'm somewhat familiar with Chromedome and Rewind but are there any more important LGBT characters?
A fine question to ask for National Coming Out Day, well done!
IDW’s approach to Transformers - which is to say that female Transformers have not existed on Cybertron in statistically significant quantity for millions of years - means that, in fact, the whole planet is a “homonormative” society where male bots loving male bots is the standard. In addition to the breakout case of Chromedome and Rewind, other notable ‘bots have included Needlenose and Horri-Bull:

Brainstorm, who had an unrequited crush on Quark:
Tumblr media
And Blast Off, revealed to harbour love for his commander Onslaught, who was recently mentally manipulated into returning that affection:

The introduction of Cybertron’s colony worlds, on which female Transformers widely exist, hasn’t changed this any. Same-sex couples are common on colony worlds too, including Knock Out and Breakdown, canonizing the popular fan interpretation of the Transformers Prime characters’ relationship:

And the colonies have opened up the door to female/female couples too, like Greenlight and Lancer:
Tumblr media
and Jumpstream and Dustup:
Tumblr media
Special mention has to Lug and Anode, a pair of assigned-male-at-birth Transformers from Cybertron who ventured out into the universe and gained a new understanding of gender through their encounters with other alien species. Deciding that “female” fit them better, they transitioned to become the first transgender lesbian Transformers couple.

Now, this isn’t a complete list - there are other minor characters, some from further back in Transformers history who are…. llllllets say, less-enlightened depictions of LGBTQ individuals. We once made a post about that history, and you can also check our Transformer romance article for a more complete list of relationships.

I love Transformers very, very much, but if you didn’t grow up with it, it can be a daunting series to get into. There are dozens of cartoons, hundreds of issues of comics, and a bunch of distinct universes to worry about. To an outsider, how do you even start?
That’s why I threw this together! This is a compilation of most of the best, most noteworthy, and easiest to get into Transformers series. I neglected to mention plot details and stuff to keep the word count from getting higher, and instead tried to focus on the style of each series to help you figure out which you might want to look into if you’re interested
I also put together a reading order for More Than Meets the Eye, because it’s my favorite and I really, really want more people to read it. It builds off of several years of comics that preceded it, but it was design to be the perfect jumping on point for new readers, so you don’t have to read much outside of the main series! The only big exception is the Dark Cybertron crossover event between “seasons,” which is important for IDW’s Transformers continuity as a whole but, honestly, isn’t all that mandatory for MTMTE readers
I hope this helps!

We just received an ask about canonically LGBTQ characters in Transformers cartoons, but unfortunately, Tumblr crashed and ate it when we tried to post our response. Hopefully the question asker will see this as we post it again!
The pickings are not great, unfortunately - they tend to be found only in Japanese Transformers media, and are largely stereotypical depictions, even offensively so. If you want some good examples of LGBTQ representation in Transformers, look instead to IDW’s current comics, like “More than Meets the Eye” and “Windblade” – but we’re guessing you know about those already, and you ARE asking about cartoons specifically! So, then:
Tumblr media
The earliest examples tend to be the kind of campy, effeminate villain you see in a lot of anime - I don’t know if you’d really count that, or even want to. In this group, there’s Beast Wars II Starscream (who was kinda-sorta maybe implied to be “partners” with his big buddy BB - maybe we’ll have a better picture of that when the long-awaited fansub of the series is finally released by Karyuudo Fansubs in the near future)…
Tumblr media
…Beast Wars Neo Archadis, who was originally designed to be a female character…
Tumblr media
…and Car Robots Gas Skunk. In his case, that aspect of his personality did not survive to the English dub of the series, in which he was more of a coarsely-voiced, mookish type.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
More overtly, there was Energon Mirage, who had a crush on his leader, Galvatron. He had an immobile face (it WAS the Energon cartoon, after all, almost everyone did), but often clasped his hands and held them beside his tilted head as a way of “swooning” when Galvatron did something cool. At one point, he even pirouettes and is surrounding by a glowing pink heart. His romantic inclination was really only part of the Japanese version of the series, but the dub was so incompetent that it’s hard to attribute the erasure of his orientation in the English version to any kind of conscious effort.
Tumblr media
Japanese dubs of American Transformers cartoons also changed the orientations of a few characters; by switching Airazor from female to male for the Japanese-language version of the show, the dub of Beast Wars turned their relationship with Tigatron from a straight to gay one. At first, the dub skirted the issue by reframing their relationship as if they were a samurai and his ward, but by the time they were openly displaying affection toward one another in the show’s second season, it couldn’t be ignored. As this sudden shift to the romantic seemed rather sudden to Japanese viewers, a Japanese Beast Wars magazine addressed the issue thusly:
Question: “If Tigatron and Airazor are both boys, how come they were flirting when the Aliens abducted them?” Answer: “Even among humans there are boys who both love (like) each other. In the case of Tigatron and Airazor, they had been fighting together for a long time and as their emotions increased, their friendship turned to feelings of love.”
Tumblr media
Less favourably, there’s the case of Beast Machines Nightscream, who was turned by the Japanese dub of the series into an extreme caricature of a gay man.  He incorporated the catchphrase of then-popular Japanese comedian Masaki Sumitani and his “Hard Gay” persona into his dialogue as a vocal tic (”Fuu!”), he was obsessed with fashion and style, called Rattrap “Aunty,” and because he spent a lot of time with Silverbolt (since both were fliers), the pair were even derisively referred to as “homo-tachi” (”gay boys”) by Blackarachnia. Not a pretty picture.
Tumblr media
It gets worse: in 2016, most of these characters were grouped together by the Transformers Legends gag manga and shown working at a “little brother” cafe (the male equivalent of Japan’s “maid cafes”).
That’s about all that come to mind. As you can see, it’s not an impressive list, but we hope this helps in some way!
