Ellington “EMT” - Mini Review
You may remember Ellington Ratliff as the former drummer for pop rock band R5. Now, gone solo under just Ellington, he has released his first single titled “EMT.”
Attention-grabbing, distorted riffs and backbeat introduce the track. “Oh, no,” begins the lyrics, which, according to Ellington, are about “observing your ego and how that can drive you off the deep end.” As indicated by the significance of the distorted guitar, bass, and drum combo, the track has undeniable rock influences. Genre wise, I’m tempted to label it as a sort of crunchy pop-rock. The music video compliments the dark energy of the track; filmed at about three in the morning in what appears to be areas of a neighborhood, backyard, and house. There’s flashing lights, some greenscreen action, and even an appearance from Ellington’s pet cat, Tiki.
On a more personal note, as someone who was a loyal fan of R5 all the way through to the band’s end in 2018, I am very excited about Ellington’s new project. I genuinely enjoy his debut track and look forward to hearing more.
