Summary: When Jack gets a call from an old friend, Matty Webber, telling him about a job opportunity with an organization called ‘DXS’, he isn’t sure what to expect. What he doesn't expect is being hired as the partner of the top agent - also the son of Director James MacGyver. Jack navigates getting to the bottom of what’s going on with his new partner when it seems like what looked like arrogance and nepotism might be something more dangerous. Along the way Riley and Bozer are brought in to Operation Investigate Our Boss to try and get to the bottom of what’s wrong and DXS and who is to blame.

“Can’t ya just— not meet them? I mean I ain’t gonna force ya to go, and you certainly don’t need to force yerself to go. It’s yer life man, do whatcha want. Don’t let no one tell what ya can and can’t do.” Jack had been sitting on the couch while Mac had been pacing back and forth in the living room. “I mean, follow the law and whatever, but ya know.”

“I don’t know. It’s just not the same.” Mac answered. “It’s not their fault and everything is already set up and I don’t have any contact information to cancel it and I know my dad will freak out if I do anything to get out of it. I can’t just not go.”

“Ya could though. Yer dad set all this up without consulting ya. He’s not doin this for yer satisfaction, only his own. It ain’t on you if ya don’t show.”

“I can’t do that!”

Jack raised a brow then his hands in defeat at Mac’s raised voice. He didn’t reply, instead just watched as Mac continues to pace, apparently not caring about Jack’s reaction.

He knew Mac was stressed about everything, but that seemed to be a different kind of stress than what was normally experienced. It was greater, like something else was underlying it.

“What if ya just—”

“Stop! I don’t need your input for this! What’s done is done and I can’t change that! Stop trying to control what you have no control over!”

Jack went stoic after that. Just because he knew Mac didn’t mean anything, didn’t mean that it didn’t hurt.

“Alright hoss.” He stood up. “I’ll see ya later then.” He turned, not bothering to look at Mac, and walked to the front door and left.

You keep talking about the origins of AO3 as this group effort by an actual group of people who were friends and who spent time discussing this with each other in person. It's kind of blowing my mind. Is there a post or a journal somewhere that specifically keeps record of this?

No, that's mean, I know you're serious. It's just flabbergasting how much fandom has expanded and how much there isn't a direct link to the past.

Astolat and Cesperanza floated the idea at Vividcon and various places, I think, though I wasn't going to cons in that era. We were all on LJ in those days, and Astolat made a big post nailing her theses to the door. Discussion in the comments was instant and prolonged.

A LJ com was set up to discuss. It was later renamed to otw_news, but if you go all the way back to the beginning, you can see brainstorming mess instead of official news posts.

Fun fact, we never intended to call it AO3. There was a whole call for name suggestions, but nothing was as evocative as astolat's original post title referencing Virginia Woolf. (For those who haven't thought about it, AO3's name is a reference to A Room of One's Own.)

That's how many people cared at the time: a few hundred. Maybe a thousand if you count lurkers, but frankly, that community was not as lurkery as now. It wasn't just ten friends. It was a community effort. But what "our" community looked like at the time was vastly different. It was six degrees of Kevin Bacon astolat, not a vast sea of strangers like fic fandom on AO3 is now.

Here's an early post suggesting we ban the under 18s from the site entirely. Pity we didn't do so, given the rise of antis.

Here's the invite to a fundraising party at astolat's in NYC that following Halloween. I dressed as Amanda from Highlander, not very well.

You can tell we knew each other by looking at those comments on astolat's initial post. You can also tell how discussion-based that part of fandom was back in 2007.

The way my tumblr is now with a ton of text, back and forth, and hopping around between threads of conversation, all featuring a consistent set of faces, is very much like LJ. Most of tumblr is not.

#I was never in the fandoms mentioned #but 20 years ago I would go to cons and hang out with my fandom writer friends #our big one was DragonCon #I would spend a couple months making costumes #it was so exciting to find some person IRL who I'd been chatting with or writing with or admiring online #fandom today has changed a lot #and not always in good ways #there was more of a community feel when people knew each other in person #even the people who irritated the heck out of me online were usually nice enough at cons #maybe on boards you could argue viciously with them while they were in their obnoxious Ayn Rand phase #but at cons they were part of Your People #because you were in the same fandom #wearing your fandom's type of custumes #bumping shoulders together while wading through a sea of Other Fandoms people you didn't know
