Welcome to the Batman Villain Story Showdown!

This showdown pits various stories (both in comics and in adaptations) against each other, seeking to find the best story for each member of the rogues' gallery. Each tournament will focus on one villain, with the end goal being to curate a list of stories that shows why each of these characters is so beloved.

The format

Every tournament will be broken into three sections - non-comics, short comics, and long comics. (There might be some edge cases, but generally this is so that stories from anthologies aren't going up against massive arcs.) Once there's a winner in each category, they'll be pitted against each other to find an ultimate favourite.

Because I intend to run a lot of these, polls will be a day long, with submissions for the next tournaments open while the current one runs. At the moment, the upcoming tournaments are Joker, Two-Face, Scarecrow, and Riddler. More tournaments may or may not be added to the lineup depending on how well this goes. I may also include bonus polls and forms as it goes on because I really like making spreadsheets.

What stories are eligible?

The character should be fairly prominent. They don't need to be the only villain, costarring is fine, but they shouldn't be a sidenote.

Despite the name of the tournament, they don't have to be the story's villain, and the story doesn't have to have Batman. The Riddler being a PI or getting his shit absolutely rocked by Impulse are both fair game, for example.

These should be reasonably self-contained, at least with regards to the character. It's fine if they take place during a larger arc, but you should be able to understand what's up with the character and their plans without having to read an entire event comic.

Similarly, neither "all of a TV show" or "out-of-context episodes of a serial" count as one story. Sorry, Gotham fans.

Sequel episodes in the various animated kids shows are fine, since they're written with the assumption that not all of the audience will have seen the previous episodes.

No fan works.

Tl;dr: you should be able to give your story to someone who's fairly new to Batman with minimal explanation needed.

Submissions

Submissions for the first tournament (character currently undecided, waiting on poll results) will be closed on June 7th. I will do my best to include every submission unless this gets wildly out of hand, though that might involve some lightning rounds to get to an appropriate number for a bracket. There will also be a number of autoincludes, which I will discuss in more detail as each character comes up.
