you know, i've seen people in modern fandom shaming women for this a lot (especially when they're fandom elders or just older people in general) but honestly, i don't really see a problem with fangirling...? it's not creepy at all. it's just a way of showing your excitement.

like, a media or fanwork makes you so happy that it causes you to scream with pure joy, makes you stim because you get so excited, makes you blush and gush and melts your heart, gives you such an extreme rush and makes you super eager and hyperactive? like babe... that's a good thing. i'm glad something is making you so happy. there's still so much misogyny aimed towards girls in fandom, but there is absolutely no shame in squealing, screaming, and ugly sobbing, over your favorite novels, movies, fanfics, and tv shows. keep doing you. <3

I've been seeing that article from the Japanese side of fandom talking about shipcourse (link here, if you haven't seen it) and honestly? I'm glad there's an article like that.

I might be a westerner, but my native language is far from English. and a lot of the points they made about this being an American (and overall English speaking) dominated thing were pretty accurate.

for example, I didn't know what a DNI was when I first joined Tumblr. yet everybody in the fandom circles I ended up in had them and I basically copy-pasted one of them for myself at the time. it had proshippers on it, yes, but I didn't know what it all meant.

what I'm saying is: since Tumblr is predominantly used by Americans and native English speakers, there's a lot of concepts and things that will fly past the heads of those who use this language to ease communication. and antis' bs rhetoric and terminology could easily be one of them.

maybe this is a possible reason for why a lot of ex antis (such as myself) were just misinformed and, because of it, ended up at the wrong side of things.

these terms were more widespread in japanese fandom at first, but then they also became used in the west.

In a nutshell, a fujoshi is a woman/ someone who's female aligned that likes yaoi. a fudanshi is a man/ male aligned person who likes yaoi. and fudanshi is the gender neutral version of these.

alternatively, himejoshi, himedanshi and himejin are like these but for yuri fans.

since these are japanese words, they're written like this both for singular and plural.

I most likely overlooked a lot of things for the sake of simplicity, so, to anyone reading this who wants to add on more, please do!

also, these terms (specially fujoshi) have quite a lot of history to them. I recommend you read some wiki articles or Tumblr posts made about this, because it's interesting.

It's literally therapists recommending fiction as a way to cope with reality. Most therapists are pro-fiction, so long as it's not harming them. Fiction doesn't affect reality on a 1:1 basis, and any trained professional knows that.
