The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences can go stuff itself, Andrea Riseborough
Who better to call attention to the absence of attention, for deserving work, than the lucky few who made the A-list? Kate Winslet, Jane Fonda, Charlize Theron, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Amy Adams have contributed mightily to the acting profession. They are brand-names. They have reached out to their not-nearly-so-well-known sister, Andrea Riseborough, and offered her a hand to the next level. This is what workers do. They look out for one another and show kindness. They unite against the bosses. They welcome into their midst the indie. They fight the system. Brava!

At the heart of the film is an indelible scene…
Navalny had got an FSB agent to confess on camera and describe how he’d been part of the clean-up gang, sent in to remove any traces of novichok from Navalny’s clothes.
Navalny does not blink or miss a beat. He just piles on the pressure and insists on more details. “On which piece of cloth was your focus on? Which garment had the highest risk factor?” he asks. And the answer comes back: “The underpants.”
The FSB had tried to kill him with his own underpants.
“Navalny, from being an anti-corruption investigator/blogger, managed to create the biggest opposition organisation that was independent from the Kremlin. And he managed to do this by recruiting and training a lot of people. He was innovative in crowdfunding and he made a very important move from blogging to YouTube which made his anti-corruption content more and more readily available and in an entertaining form. It’s a political party created off the back of a media organisation.”
Above all, he was entertaining. Navalny relentlessly, simply and endlessly took the piss. His refusal to take Putin seriously is at least part of the reason he’s now in a maximum-security prison.

Doug Liman v. Brett Kavanaugh: Justice was made in secrecy over the last year, with NDAs signed by everyone involved. The project was self-funded by Liman, making his documentary debut. He told the Hollywood Reporter that the supreme court holds “special meaning” to him, his father having been a lawyer and activist and his brother a federal judge. He was frustrated by the FBI investigation into Kavanaugh that “never happened,” and sought the help of renowned documentary producers Liz Garbus and Amy Herdy, both with specialised experience of films about sexual assault allegations, to do the work that he saw as unfinished, if barely started at all.
This, she says, brought her into the orbit of Kavanaugh, who came from a privileged family and was known as a heavy drinker at the time (he is referred to in the film as someone who was usually “more drunk than everyone else”). Ramirez recounts the alleged event, when she was intoxicated and, she says, made, without her consent, to touch Kavanaugh’s penis, which he had placed near her face.

Because Hollywood loves to costume itself as IRL.
To Leslie, which co-stars Marc Maron, Owen Teague, Allison Janney and Stephen Root, is the type of gritty, poverty-adjacent indie drama that draws critical praise and awards attention but struggles to find distribution and audience… Riseborough’s committed performance … is in a recognizable awards genre of, for lack of a better term, “going ugly” or poor.

The China Film Administration has never explained why Marvel films have been blocked since mid-2019. Film industry analysts have raised several potential reasons over the years, including the presence of LGBTQ+ characters and symbols of US patriotism, like the Statue of Liberty…

Worst Movie 2022: The Banshees of Inisherin. Because of the donkey, what happens to the donkey, and Martin McDonagh’s loathsome opinion of human nature in general. EO seems a balm.
"Donkeys are prey animals who have learned to mask signs of pain to not alert potential predators of their vulnerability. To the untrained eye, donkeys may seem to plod along without much feeling, but people who care for them know better."

OUR FOOLISH OBSESSION WITH SERIAL KILLERS: "I ask whether killing people within the wide swath of humanity that the police don’t care about actually means you’re smart."
The serial killer media industrial complex rages on, but what has it taught us? Very little about the crimes in question, and much more about ourselves.
After all this killing, which is the only way headline writers are allowed to express that Kraft Singles saw a 1.6 percent decline in sales in 2018, it’s remarkable that there was anything left to destroy. But somehow, we managed. ARE AMERICAN SERIAL KILLERS A DYING BREED? a Guardian headline wondered in 2018, and to me, the answer was clear.

Don DeLillo wrote White Noise in 1983–84 in Bronxville, New York. Today the posh "bedroom community" is famous as the home of NFL kingpin Roger Goodell. Bronxville is also where humanity formally surrendered to the sports utility vehicle. Bronxville's "public face" on 31 December 2022 is mostly parking lots, acres of gray. DeLillo said this would happen. He said many other things about America, mostly with unnerving accuracy.
White Noise might not be "unfilmable." But we will never know it if this important book — read White Noise alongside DeLillo's Mao II (1991) — is entrusted to movie directors whose technical incompetence is matched only by their self-satisfaction. Noah Baumbach's insipid, play-stagey White Noise isn't even a cartoon of what might have been. The oversharing trailer is all you need to know. At least you are not confused, American.

There is no forgiving The Forgiven — the worst movie of 2022 is also one of the worst movies of all time. Nor will I forgive anyone who writes shyte like: "How many people have seen The Forgiven? Not nearly enough." Only as a perfect example of botched novel-to-film might The Forgiven be of cautionary interest to young filmmakers: This is what the very old (and the very oligarchy) believe a movie should look and sound like in 2022. Do the very opposite.
