Also, and not sure if anyone's mentioned this already: but there is no rule that says your resume can only show work you were paid for.
A resume is to list skills you acquired/used while doing a project. Any project. Paid. Volunteered. Done for a cousin. If you did a project and used skills the market likes to see, list it.
You are not obligated, in the resume or the interview or ever, to disclose you weren't paid. Or how little you were paid. You did a thing, that doing shows you can do the thing, next question.
It's so weird talking to people who's view of "here's the way life is for everyone" is shattered as soon as they talk to someone with disabilities (physical, mental illness, any). Like you'll say you'll have a problem and instead of helping you they'll argue with you about how you're not actually facing that problem. Like,
Me: Hey, I'm really struggling to find a job and a part of it is my resume. I was depressed & psychotic during highschool so I didn't do anything to gain skills or achievements to put on my resume. I also don't have anyone to put as a reference. What can I do?
Them: You can add your skills, hobbies, clubs you're in, and different volunteer work you've done! You can also get your teacher as a reference.
Me: I already know what to put on a resume, my issue is that I don't have things that I can use. Also, I'm in my mid 20s so I don't know if I can put my highschool teacher as a reference.
Them: Well if you're a part of a church or an activity group, you could add that. Also, think of any projects you've worked on in the past.
Me: I already know you can put these things on a resume. I'm not looking for suggests of things I've already done, I'm looking for what I can do now if I haven't done anything.
Them: There's no way you didn't do anything during highschool?? What about some odd jobs you definitely did for extra money, like babysitting or mowing the lawn?
Me: I spent all of highschool either in modified classes or in bed doing nothing - not even hobbies, what about that do you not understand?
And then you talk to someone who's also disabled and they're like "Here's a bunch of jobs you can do from home that don't pay much but look good on a resume, here's some free online courses that also look good on a resume, here's how you can be making small amounts of money in the meantime, here's some things you can put besides a professional reference, and here are your rights if your future employer tries to take advantage of your disability - which you probably shouldn't tell them about unless you need accommodations."
And suddenly my will to continue trying returns!

Would this lamentation come before or after the part where we dig into how Star Wars' greatest sources were Joseph Campbell and Kurosawa's Hidden Fortress?
There's a tweet that's gone viral where a person laments realizing that Star Wars "ripped off" Dune, and how learning all the elements Star Wars took from its inspiration tainted it. And I think it shows how poisonous the emphasis on originality in art can be. Because yes, it's wonderful when art makes something new, but it's also wonderful seeing how art plays on what came before, and the conversations it has with its predecessors.
There's going to be a lot of people talking about how much of an impact Goku from Dragon Ball Z has made on fiction in the wake of Akira Toriyama's recent passing, and all the characters who were inspired by him and his story. But Goku himself is derivative - he's inspired by the Monkey King from Journey to the West, one of the first novels ever written. He's far from the first character inspired by the Monkey King, either, and also far from the last.
None of this makes Goku's impact any less than it is. None of this decreases how Goku's story has inspired countless imitators. Just as Toriyama created a new icon from imitating what he loved about Journey to the West, so did Toriyama inspire countless artists to make their own iconic works with his take on the Monkey King's archetype. Goku is, in many ways, the heir to a legacy that spans back to the 16th century, and likely beyond - because I doubt the original Monkey King was formed in a vacuum.
We're taught to think that originality and imitation are opposites that cannot coexist, but they're not mutually exclusive. One can follow in another's footsteps and still take a new journey with its own unique twists and turns. The great works of art are not spawned in the absence of inspiration - they are in conversation with what came before and what will come after.

These were my reactions to the first two episodes:
Peter Ho looks like he was hired for the Conan the Barbarian remake but took a left at Albuquerque on the way to the set.
I think Toriyama did the original character designs for the Immortals.
I always feel bad for female VA who have to shred their vocal chords from yelling all the time.
If it weren't in Chinese, I'd think this is a live-action version of some old-school anime.
Okay, if it wasn't Toriyama it had to have been either Kishimoto or Watsuki.
It's not even the CGI per se, it just has an overall feel of overblown late-90s character design with lots of yelling before you strike.
Also magical transformations.
Burning Flames: '80s Men Realness
As I was watching the first few minutes of Burning Flames, I kept thinking to myself why is Peter Ho and this show giving me such early '80s vibes? And then it hit me...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's giving Ricardo Montalbán in The Wrath of Khan.
The insane production design on Burning Flames is making me so nostalgic for the sci-fi/fantasy adventure movies of that era.

Actually your society is the freaks for shooting everything that moves and burning half your "nature reserves" every year so that upperclass dandies can eat leaded pheasant. North Americans are the well adjusted ones here, your country has become a desolate suburban lawn in island form

No wait I meant the other guy! Can I blame auto-correct?
What the fuck!!!!

I guess they think recouping even 1% is better than none (because let’s face it, when they turn it BG nobody in target audience will watch) but like who is the other woman?!?! I mean they made Shimei a girl so that’s one but who else? They’d have to do some weird editing and additions (not just cutting) to make Ye Wangxi into a love interest for either of the main two!
(Also, gotta love that it’s more acceptable to censors for their ML to be in love with a genocidal woman than another dude.)
Anyway, I hope it doesn’t get a permit because that’s just an abomination beyond anything. But if it does, I am blacklisting the tag and pretending it doesn’t exist.

[edited: name corrections]
I think that last point is really what matters here. Even if the story was originally written all het pairings, all the time, no sex for anyone and no more than hand-holding, I'd still bet you pizza money the original story would never see the light of day onscreen.
Take any the average ML from a mid-level wuxia. If all he ever did was say a few mean words (while meanwhile quietly doing just/kind things the rest of the time), it'll be hard to buy that any redemption is necessary. You were mean in a fight? Say sorry. You threw someone out? Groveling, probably. You spent years searching down the other lead's family and murdering each one? Now we're talking a need for redemption.
Redemption exists on a sliding scale, so when the CCP rules say no character can have a dark-to-light arc -- unless the 'dark' is no more than a medium-light-gray's worth of a single toe over the line -- the audience will revolt over any self-flagellation that follows. For those who don't know the original, the story will feel like it's dropped into parody. For those who do know, it'll be hard to stomach for different reasons. (Among others, being surrounded by unfamiliar fans incensed that this really-sweet-on-the-inside guy is forced to be punished so hard.)
But Taxian-Jun -- who starts as an undeniably all-dark character -- cannot be whitewashed per CCP rules without gutting the story. This isn't Xie Wei in SOKP, or even the neutered Tantai Jin in TTEOTM; CW starts out as a cruel and egotistic borderline-insane dictator who tortures people for entertainment. He's got about as much gray in him as Vantablack, and that's a major point of the entire story.
Softening TJ into simply 'partly bad' means the show reverses the novel. The horrific near-evil (if not fully evil) character -- who will walk that redemption path -- becomes misunderstood and mildly wrong. That change then turns the former victim into the torturer, pushing punishments all out of scale.
More than who ends up with whom or how, it's this flip that really butchers the story. The height TJ rises is in proportion to the depths he fell. And if we can't see the true depths where his story begins, we'll never grasp the full weight of how inconceivable, how audacious, it is for him to ever hope for forgiveness -- any forgiveness -- and how extraordinary it is that he's willing to try anyway.
No matter who he ends up in bed with.
What the fuck!!!!

Things Biden and the Democrats did, this week.
January 19-26 2024
The Energy Department announced its pausing all new liquefied natural gas export facilities. This puts a pause on export terminal in Louisiana which would have been the nation's largest to date. The Department will use the pause to study the climate impact of LNG exports. Environmentalists cheer this as a major win they have long pushed for.
The Transportation Department announced 5 billion dollars for new infrastructure projects. The big ticket item is 1 billion dollars to replace the 60 year old Blatnik Bridge between Superior, Wisconsin, and Duluth, Minnesota which has been dangerous failing since 2017. Other projects include $600 million to replace the 1-5 bridge between Vancouver, Washington, and Portland, Oregon, $427 million for the first offshore wind terminal on the West Coast, $372 million to replace the 90 year old Sagamore Bridge that connects Cape Cod to the mainland,$300 million for the Port of New Orleans, and $142 million to fix the I-376 corridor in Pittsburgh.
the White House Task Force on Reproductive Healthcare Access announced new guidance that requires insurance companies must cover contraceptive medications under the Affordable Care Act. The Biden Administration also took actions to make sure contraceptive medications would be covered under Medicare, Medicaid, CHIP, and Federal Employee Health Benefits Program. HHS has launched a program to educate all patients about their rights to emergency abortion medical care under the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act. This week marks 1 year since President Biden signed a Presidential Memorandum seeking to protect medication abortion and all federal agencies have reported on progress implementing it.
A deal between Democrats and Republicans to restore the expand the Child Tax Credit cleared its first step in Congress by being voted out of the House Ways and Means Committee. The Child Tax Credit would affect 16 million kids in the first year and lift 400,000 out of poverty. The Deal also includes an expansion of the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit which will lead to 200,000 new low income rental units being built, and also tax relief to people affected by natural disasters
The Senate Foreign Relations Committee voted for a bill to allow President Biden to seize $5 billion in Russian central bank assets. Biden froze the assets at the beginning of Russia's war against Ukraine, but under this new bill could distribute these funds to Ukraine, Republican Rand Paul was the only vote against.
The Senate passed the "Train More Nurses Act" seeking to address the critical national shortage of nurses. It aims to increase pathways for LPNs to become RNs as well as a review of all nursing programs nationally to see where improvements can be made
3 more Biden Judges were confirmed, bring the total number of Judges appointed by President Biden to 171. For the first time in history the majority of federal judge nominees have not been white men. Biden has also appointed Public Defenders and civil rights attorneys breaking the model of corporate lawyers usually appointed to life time federal judgeships

I'm not surprised the Hugo folks are all, oh no, it just happens to be total coincidence that the year we show up in China is the year that a bunch of works by China-critical authors just happen to be knocked off the list. Just a total coincidence.
I expect absolutely zero people on the Hugo org committee to admit anything, and less than zero people on that committee to suggest that going forward, maybe the Hugos should avoid bids from countries with strong censorship rules.
Bribery or threats, though given it's CCP, the latter is more likely.
That took less time than I thought it would...
