this- far too many people ignored the ghoul retcon when it was really my only issue with the series as a whole. Maybe it’ll be a placebo effect situation but honestly I doubt it.

I've been doing some thinking, and I have to confess, with all the picking and choosing from all Fallout games to make this strange patchwork lore for the series, I'm disappointed with what they did to ghouls. They've a long way from zombie-like people that'd eventually rot away to very bad burn victims to... monsters? It's all very grey but let me explain.

In the games, where everything's gone to shit and racism seems a thing of the past, people in the wasteland were shown to be very particular about ghouls, as they feared that they'd go 'feral' at any moment, that they'd stop being a rational person and turn into this generic rabid zombie that attacks anything it sees. I can't tell right now if this was ever addressed properly, but I had the understanding that going feral or not simply happened as you became a ghoul. That you are or you aren't, and it's not a matter of time. So, in a way, racism did not die... it just stopped being about skin color and became more of a skin texture thing. In Fallout 3, ghouls had their own settlement in the Underworld, in Fallout 4 they're not allowed to set foot in Diamond City, and they're one of the 'things' the Brotherhood of Steel despises on principle, without a distinction between feral or not. The series has destroyed this by making all ghouls dependant on some mystery chem to remain themselves, which suddenly makes it more reasonable to be afraid of ghouls, as they really are time-ticking bomb one missed dose away from attacking you. I'm not saying I need fantasy racism in the post-nuclear world, I'm saying that they took what amounted as very bad burn victims that were ostrasized out of unjustified fears and turned them into the monsters the games always showed us they aren't - or, at least, not any more or any less than any other person in the wasteland.
