its not diagnosed but based off the symptoms and their severity i am 99% sure i suffer from dermatillomania (excoriation disorder), and have since seventh grade.

this is to say, i know it's bad, and i have tried many times to stop and haven't been able to for more than two weeks, and it's fucked up my fingertips and fingernails.

but. and this is gonna sound stupid probably. there's something almost healing and poetic? or maybe symbolic, rather, about finally pulling off a tough, smooth callous that formed over a particularly bad wound as it healed, and revealing the soft, new pink skin underneath, and finally being able to feel things clearly instead of having them be faint and muted. and you have to be careful of course because if you pull too hard or too fast you'll go too deep and you'll bleed, and sometimes you do anyway no matter how careful you are and you have to let those little spots heal again, but for the most part the skin is healthy and new.

and so i feel like that's representative of mental health, and trauma. its gonna be a big wound, and its gonna take a long time to heal and theres gonna be a big wall between it and the world around you, the things you're supposed to experience, because you're protecting yourself, but then eventually you'll be able to pull that away and feel things the way you're supposed to again even if some spots are still left a little raw and sore.

that said. if you can help it dont pick at your skin it fucking sucks dude
