*Author’s note: Hey! I’m back to writing after a month. Happy Halloween, everyone! To celebrate Halloween, I decided to write a one-shot with probably the creepiest character in Danganronpa, Korekiyo Shinguji. This is my first attempt at a horror-romance genre of writing, so sorry if it’s cringe. Please note that if this story comes across as me romanticizing something, that isn’t my intention. I’m just wanting to make that clear before we start! I am not intending to romanticize anything in this story. If any of the triggers above upset you or trigger you, then this story may not be your thing, so please don’t risk your mental health. Also, I would also like to point out that Korekiyo in this story has a different backstory that I written up a while back because nobody likes the incest that was in his original one! With that out of the way, grab some snacks and enjoy this Halloween special!*
Y/N didn't understand what this guy's deal was...
Ever since he had walked into the small floral shop a month ago, their eyes had been latched onto him like a rabbit just noticing a wolf standing behind the bushes. His tall, slim figure resembling the beauty of a Japanese maple. The long flowing ocean green hair fanning out and brushing against his branch-like arms and legs. Those mysterious golden eyes curiously observing all the plants and people that were scattered around the shop. Y/N remembered their cheeks immediately flushing when he made eye-contact with them, and they've been kind of smitten ever since.
Y/N would notice him hanging around the florist shop and would always keep an eye on him whenever they noticed him. Their eyes would literally feast on this man as he took note of all the different arrangements displayed against the mint walls. He was definitely one of the most attractive men that they had ever seen, and it immediately perked their interest. Sure, they were always curious about their customers, but, this time, their curiosity felt less...innocent. It made them want to rip off the zippered mask that covered the bottom-half of his face, at the least.
Though, they did notice that he never seemed to buy anything. He never approached them to ask any questions about the arrangements being displayed or what's popular at the moment. Hell, he never seemed to talk with any of the customers that were exploring the shop. All he did was just...stare at the people and plants inside. Y/N could've sworn that just last week, he was staring at them for a good thirty minutes before turning his attention away. Maybe most people may have felt creeped out, but, for some reason, Y/N never felt that way. It made their heart pound and their cheeks flush at the idea that this good-looking man was staring right at them of all people. They never had people staring at them before.
Honestly, they weren't too sure of what the man's intentions were for hanging around the shop. Was he just shy and too nervous to talk to anyone? Was he introverted and preferred to figure things out on his own without the help of others? Or was he like them and just enjoyed flowers and plant-life?
At the back of their mind, Y/N could imagine one final possibility. It was possible that he was intending on committing a crime any day now? That was a very low possibility, Y/N had rationalized. He hadn't shown any suspicious behaviors aside from just being creepy and staring, and he could even not be meaning to come off that way. It could be who he is. Besides, the mystery surrounding him kind of made Y/N's crush on him all the more exciting.
Still, Y/N kept an eye on this man, studying him for any suspicious behaviors. It wasn't like they thought he was dangerous or anything. It was just better to be safe than sorry. Besides, it was the perfect excuse to have him as their eye candy.
So, this cycle went on for the month that he hung out in the floral shop. Y/N nervously interacts with the customers that approach them in the shop, takes their arrangement orders, and organizes them. All while keeping an eye on this strange man. And, so far, nothing had happened. He just continues lurking around the shop and quietly staring at plants and people. As a result, Y/N grew used to this person and felt like there was nothing to worry so much about, so they continued on with their business.
"Okay, so you want an Autumn Night arrangement as a centerpiece for a dinner party, right?" they quietly asked as they wrote down the order.
"Yes, dear," the woman standing in front of them nodded. "I'm wanting something autumn-themed to match with the decorations."
Y/N glanced up from their notepad with a sweet smile. "Okay then. It'll cost 5907 yen, please. I'll try to have it ready by tomorrow, and you can come by to pick it up and pay for it then."
The woman smiled. "Alrighty then! Thank you so much! You're such a kind person, sweetheart."
Y/N blushed and starting waving their hands. "O-oh no! Thanks, but I'm just doing my job, ma'am."
"That may be true, but you're the Ultimate Florist. You undoubtedly have far more important orders to tend to than mine."
Y/N shook their head. "Th-that's not true! Flowers are meant to be loved by and shared with everyone! Nobody's arrangement is more important than someone else's. As the Ultimate Florist, my job is just to spread the emotions and beauty that the flowers capture through the arrangements."
After they finished speaking, they looked up at the woman and felt their cheeks turn red. They shyly looked down and mumbled, "At least, that's what I think..."
The woman just gave a fond laugh in response. "I see. Sorry for assuming, Y/N. I suppose flowers don't discriminate!"
Y/N looked up and let out a small giggle. Suddenly, they felt eyes blazing right though them. They glanced up to meet piercing golden eyes as the man in the mask stared right at them. Y/N felt their knees tremble as the man made no effort to avert his leering gaze. The mask prevented them to be able to read his expression, so they had no idea what he was even thinking. Subconsciously, Y/N fiddled with their hat, suddenly worried about how they looked as shivers traveled down their spine. Shakily peaking out from under the brim of their hat, they saw that he still hasn't stopped staring, studying them. They suddenly became aware of the nervousness intensifying the longer they stood there.
Y/N forced their gaze away from the man and turned to the lady. "Uh...I'll go work on your order now..."
With no other words, Y/N dashed towards the back of the counter and swung open the wooden door that separated the customers from the workers and blocked that metallic gaze. As the door shut behind them, the sudden need for air caused Y/N to gasp for breath. It feels so much safer in here.
However, now they were safe and away from his petrifying eyes, Y/N wanted to kick themselves. Why did they run away?! He must've thought that they were really weird now. What kind of shop owner runs away from a customer staring at them. UGH! They were so bad at this.
But still...excitement was bubbling inside their chest as they thought about the attractive man staring at them, giving them their full attention. They placed their hands over their heart as their cheeks flushed. He really was staring at them. Did that mean he was interested? Or did he just wanted to ask a question about the arrangements after so long? He was a customer after all, so the staring could be just him needing something from them. Still, if he was going to ask a question, it still meant he wanted to talk to them. Y/N's heart did a tap dance inside their chest. They felt like a giddy high school student romanticizing a simple "hi" that their crush gave. It just was so exciting to have this crush and fantasize about the possible interactions between them and this guy.
"Uh...Y/N? You do know that you're kneeling on the floor, right? And why are you so sweaty? Are you okay?"
Y/N was snapped out of their fantasies to see their assistant, Kanae, looking down at them, a worried expression etching their gentle features. Y/N felt their cheeks flush as they quickly stood up and brushed the dust off their apron. "Uh...yeah. I'm fine. Just...have a lot to do. That's all. Could you please look after the shop while I'm back here?"
"Um....okay...?" Kanae didn't look exactly convinced, but, regardless, she walked by Y/N and placed her hand on the door knob. As she opened the door, they caught a glance of her phone's screen and there was an article on it. Just from a quick glance of the article, there was a phrase that caught Y/N's attention. "October deaths?" they read.
Kanae turned her head around to look at Y/N and quietly closed the door again. "Oh yeah. It's just an old legend that's been in our town and I've been curious about. It talks about how a lot of people-mainly girls-had suddenly died every year on October 31st, one by one."
"October 31st?" Y/N repeated. "But, that's tomorrow."
"Exactly!" Kanae nodded. "A body would be found every year on the October 31st, seemingly dying a little bit before midnight of that exact same day. The weirdest part is that nobody has any idea of how these people died. Every autopsy report that has been done on each of the bodies had no results of what killed them."
"H-how is that even possible?!" Y/N questioned. "Even if something was done to sabotage the reports, there would've been, at least, some clue to how they've died!"
A small smirk crossed Kanae's face as she placed a finger to her chin. Y/N immediately grew nervous as soon as they saw the expression on their face. "Well, I have a theory...that a ghost is the one that's causing all these mysterious deaths..."
Y/N paled. "A g-g-ghost?! That can't be!"
"Why not?" Kanae had a wide, creepy, smile on her face as she tilted her head at Y/N. "The only way that multiple autopsy report would have no results is if something supernatural was the one causing the deaths. Doesn't it explain how people are suddenly dropping dead with no trace to what killed them? Besides that...did I mention that the bodies were discovered near the entrance gates of a graveyard that's not too far from here?" Kanae giggled creepily. "Sounds like the dead is adding to their numbers..."
Y/N felt chills travel down their spine as their knees buckled. Sweat dripped down their forehead as they stared at Kanae's terrifying smirk, unable to find their voice.
Suddenly, Kanae's mood quickly shifted back to her gentle and bubbly self as she rubbed Y/N's shoulders. "I'm playing, Y/N! I'm playing! You can relax."
Y/N took a deep breath and crossed their arms while glaring at Kanae. "D-don't joke around like that! You nearly gave me a heart attack!"
"I'm sorry," Kanae apologized, rubbing their hand. "I just couldn't resist the opportunity to scare you."
Y/N huffed and flicked Kanae's forehead, which only made her laugh. "You're just the worst, you know that? Now, go to the front and do your job. I have some arrangements to make back here."
Kanae nodded as she opened the door, laughing. "Alright, alright! I got what I deserved." With that, she skipped out of the door, her bubbly laughter being the last thing Y/N heard before the door closed.
They sighed as they walked towards a desk near the side of the room, attempting to calm themselves. 'Should've known that Kanae was pulling one of her usual weird jokes', they thought as they opened one of the desk's drawers and grabbed their knives. 'After all, ghosts weren't real. Those deaths must've just been real bad luck or happened from something else. No way it was a ghost.'
Still, Y/N could feel their hands trembling as they pushed their floral foam knife through the block of foam in front of them, cutting it into three pieces. They couldn't help but wonder about the possibilities of it really being a ghost that was causing all these deaths. Something had to have caused those people to suddenly die and for their autopsy reports to have been screwed up with. Could someone alive really be capable of doing all of that each year on the same exact day?
'Wait, why am I immediately assuming that all of these things are true?' Y/N wondered to themselves. 'Kanae said that it was only a legend, right? So...there's a chance that those deaths may have never happened and it's all meant to just be a spooky myth.'
With that thought comforting them slightly, Y/N focused all their attention on the arrangement, going to the greenhouse at the back of the shop to pick the flowers they needed first before working on the order. Planning the way that the arrangement would look on paper, using their floral knife to thin the stems of the flowers, and poking green wire into the calyxes of the plants, Y/N meticulously worked in their office all day. They had placed so much, if not all, of their focus on their arrangement to the point that, soon enough, they had forgotten all about the mysterious death legend. Time flew by as they worked and by the time they were almost done with the arrangement, the sun had set long ago and all the customers of the shop had already left.
"Nothing really interesting happened today," Kanae reported as she pinned up each order note on the bulletin board hanging over the desk. "Just had some weirdo in a mask making people uncomfortable, but he didn't really do anything suspicious. I just kept an eye on him."
Y/N knew better than to mention to Kanae about their attraction to the "weirdo in the mask", so they just nodded. "Well, as long as the other costumers are safe, we don't have to worry too much. If we see him again, then I'll try to talk to him..."
"Uh...you? Sweetie, you get nervous just having your order taken. You sure you can talk to that guy?"
Y/N blushed. "I-I don't get nervous! And yes, I'm absolutely a hundred percent sure!"
Kanae raised her hands in defeat as she smiled. "Alright then. I'll let you try to talk to him if we get any complaints about him again. Well, I'm off. Got some homework to do tonight. I've already organized the register and cleaned up everything, so you don't have to worry about that."
Y/N nodded. "Thank you. I'm almost done with this arrangement, so I'll be here a little bit longer. Have a good night, Kanae."
Kanae waved goodbye to them and left the office with a final "Night, Y/N." They could hear the gentle ringing of the small bells hung above the door as Kanae had left the floral shop. Y/N sighed and continued to add some final finishing touches to their arrangement before finally getting up and stepping back to admire their work.
Black dahlias in the center to draw the viewer's eyes to darkness, some orange begonias and daffodils surrounding it for that autumn feeling, lily of the valley peaking through for some added flair, and finally, some frosty dusty miller for the greenery. Y/N definitely thought that this captured the autumn night picture that they were looking for.
After making sure that the arrangement covered the wires and tape used to keep the floral foam in the some container, a yawn escaped Y/N's throat as exhaustion weighed down their muscles. They took a glance up at the clock that rested over on the left wall. 11 o'clock. They leaned back and stretched slightly, feeling the tension leave their muscles from being hunched over their work all day.
Satisfied with their arrangement, Y/N began to place all the tools they used back in their respective drawers and spots before grabbing a spray bottle and leaving the office, making their way to the front of the shop.
It was completely pitch-black in the small flower shop aside from some small rays of moonlight peeking through the windows. Leaves, blossoms, and plants that weren't standing straight loomed over to where the moonlight hit them, creating lurking shadows that creepily hung over Y/N in the night. The mint-colored walls seemed to be grey in the darkness and the only sounds that could be heard were the gentle taps of Y/N's shoes. It seemed like the usual cute charm of the florist shop in the day was sucked out and replaced with a nighttime creepiness.
Unaffected by the spooky atmosphere, Y/N simply just grabbed a flashlight from under the counter and made their way towards each plant with their spray bottle raised before pressing the nozzle. Gentle water droplets danced on the blooms and leaves and hydrated the plants. Y/N hummed softly to themselves and carefully stroked the flowers and leaves as they took care of their beloved plants.
After finishing watering an arrangement of roses near the windows, Y/N stepped back from the pot and glanced at a window for a split second. In the second that they looked at the window, they saw a tall, figure-like shadow standing just near the wall behind them. Their eyes widened and their heart pounded as the feeling of someone watching them suddenly flooding their body. They froze as the figure, clearly noticing that they saw them, took a step closer.
Panicking, Y/N spun around and hurled the flashlight right at the intruder's face before sprinting towards the door, mind racing with terrifying ideas of what the intruder was doing in the shop. But, just before they could reach it, they felt a hand grab their arm. Y/N glanced behind them to see a bandaged hand gripping onto their wrist, and they quickly turned around to try to swipe at the door in vain. They were about to scream when suddenly....
"Khehe…throwing a flashlight at my face?" the person grabbing onto them questioned, his calm and coarse voice whispering in their ear. "Quite an unusual way to attack intruder, I must say, though I don't suppose you have many weapons on you."
"P-please don't hurt me..." A quiet shaky voice escaped Y/N's lips as they tried pull themselves free of the stranger's grip, but it was constricting, refusing to let them escape. "Please! I'll do anything you want. J-just...let me go."
"Oh, do not worry," the man reassured. "I wasn't planning on causing harm to you."
"Y-you weren't...?" Y/N felt the hand letting go of its grip on their wrist, releasing them from its constriction. They turned around to see a similar-looking bandaged hand holding out their flashlight to them.
"I believe this is yours?" Y/N quickly took the flashlight out of the stranger's hand and shone it on his face. Immediately, they recognized the masked face of the mysterious golden-eyed stranger they've been eyeing for the past month.
“I-It’s you…” Y/N gasped, cheeks flushing at the reminder of how close they were to him. “You’re the guy that only comes here to observe the plants and people here.”
The man let out a soft, scratching laugh. "Yes, that is correct. I do apologize if I have unnerved you or anyone else during my observations. You see, I am not from around here, and I was intending on looking around and becoming familiar with the customs. I have heard that this florist shop was quite popular and my curiosity led me to coming here to see for myself."
"Uh...if you don't mind me asking, what got you curious about my shop?"
"Well, for starters, I have heard that the Ultimate Florist themselves was the owner. Naturally, that would immediately draw any fellow Ultimate student to investigate. Besides that, my field of study can involve observing the relationships between people and plants. So, I was also given the opportunity to research this."
The way he spoke reminded Y/N of a sophisticated university professor. He seemed dignified as he spoke with a slightly complicated vocabulary than most people would've and his dialect stroke Y/N as being kind of old. Regardless, they were intrigued even more than they already were.
"I guess that makes sense. Well, I am Y/N L/N, the Ultimate Florist. You said that you're an Ultimate, too?"
"That is correct," the man nodded. "My name is Korekiyo Shinguji. I am called the Ultimate Anthropologist."
"Anthropologist?" Y/N repeated. "So, you basically study people, or societies, or cultures. At least, that's what I remember anthropology being. Sorry, I'm not exactly an expert."
"That's quite alright," Korekiyo's golden eyes seemed to glow with a calm passion. "I'm always happy to teach. Anthropology is, like you said, the study of human societies and cultures. However, it is far deeper than simply just that. It is a study that examines the thought behind culture, faith, and customs. I study custom legends, folk tales, songs, and human behavior. I often rigorously analyze these customs to shed light on their origins and what made these customs so popular today."
"Wow!" Y/N gasped, placing a hand over their mouth. "That sounds like a lot of work, Shinguji. So, you were trying to study the relationships of people and plants?"
Korekiyo nodded. "Plants and flowers do tend to influence and affect many human behaviors. In fact, ethnobotany is the study of the interrelationships between cultures and plant-life. It's a connection between two different fields of study-botany and anthropology. Now, I'm no ethnobotanist myself, and I must admit that it's a field of study that's not exactly a part of my expertise. However, I figured that it would be worth observing this florist shop to possibly get more experience with the field. It's not something that I would normally consider researching, but learning more about it would prove to beneficial to me and my studies."
"Really, how?" Y/N asked, tilting their head like a curious puppy.
"Well, one must be willing to expand their knowledge past their experienced fields if they wish to be more well-informed. However, that's not my only goal for studying this field..." While the mask covered his face, Y/N could see the small smile forming in his eyes. "I simply wish to study the extend of humanity's beauty."
"Humanity's beauty?" Y/N probably should've felt creeped out by this, but the way that this guy talked so passionately about anthropology drew them in and got them curious to learn more. Like a moth drawn to a flame.
Korekiyo nodded, gliding over to one of the flower displays near the wall. "I have a pet theory that all aspects of humanity, even the ugly parts, can be considered beautiful. In every situation, every reaction, every culture, even through every hardship. I wish to study and witness all these aspects of humanity in person and relish in its beauty. I figured that a florist's shop would contain much of that beauty within the emotions and nature that is kept here."
He plucked a stem from a butterfly weed plant from the arrangement and turned to face Y/N, who followed right behind him. Korekiyo presented the butterfly weed stem to them. "There was also the chance to speak with the Ultimate Florist, and I couldn't simply pass down that opportunity, could I? I was actually wishing to speak with you sooner, but I didn't wish to pester you when you looked so preoccupied. Again, I do apologize for the conditions. I didn't mean to startle you, but I can say that I do not regret the chance to finally converse with you."
Y/N felt their face heat up as they stared at the bunches of small orange flowers in his hands and then up at his shimmering golden eyes. He...wanted to talk to them? Logically, they should've been creeped out, or terrified out of their wits, or hesitant, or even unsure of what to say. But...they felt like they didn't feel any of those things. Instead, their heart pounded in their chest as they took the bundle of orange flowers, bashfully looking away from his eyes. A warm and fuzzy feeling of flattery spread through their bones. Only one thought danced in their head: 'He wanted to talk to ME of all people...'
Y/N shyly walked past him and carefully placed the butterfly weed back in its arrangement. "Um...please don't pick flowers out of their arrangements...but thank you. I'm honored that you wanted to talk to me. Just, try to approach me next time instead of staring at me from across the room."
Korekiyo nodded. "Of course. Forgive me if I unnerved you."
"I-It's fine, really!" Y/N reassured before swiftly changing the subject. "So, you said that flowers were related to different cultures?"
The excited and passionate fire in Korekiyo's eyes returned as he began another lesson. "Yes. I'm sure you most likely are aware of this, but many societies around the world have assigned associations upon different flowers and plants. Depending on the symbolism of each one, these flowers are used for different occasions and to convey different messages."
He walked away from them and gracefully moved towards an arrangement near the door that had a couple of marigolds decorating it. “For instance, marigolds, or tagetes as they’re scientifically called. I assume you’re already aware, but marigolds are often associated with the sun, and thus, they were seen as symbols of power, strength, or warmth. Quite fitting, don’t you agree? However, they have a darker meaning to them. They are often called the ‘flower of death.’ In fact, in Mexico, they are an important symbol for their festivities during-”
“THE DAY OF THE DEAD!” Y/N blurted out. “Marigolds are believed to attract and guide souls to the altars that were placed to honor deceased family members in Mexico. During the Day of the Dead, their bright colors often encourage families to celebrate life instead of feeling bitter about death, especially since the holiday is about honoring the dead and being with loved ones that have already passed in spirit!”
After letting out their outburst, Y/N quickly realized that Korekiyo was staring right at them. They felt their cheeks heat up uncomfortably and quickly looked away. “At least…that’s what I know. I haven’t done a lot of research into it aside from the floral aspect…heck I can’t even pronounce the name in Spanish…”
"Dias de los Muertos." Y/N glanced up to see Korekiyo walking up to them with an amused eyebrow raised. “I believe that is what it’s called in Spanish. But, yes, you are correct in every other regard. I don’t think you should be so hard on yourself for your outburst.”
Y/N nervously played with a lock of their hair. “R-really, it’s nothing…I just had some orders from some Mexicans for the holiday that required marigolds.”
“It doesn’t make you less intelligent. In fact, I would consider you to be far more informed about plants than I am. It’s rather refreshing to have someone know what I am speaking about actually.” His whisper-like laugh escaped from his lips as Y/N’s rosy cheeks spread their color across their entire face. “Now, if I may continue…”
He walked over to a bouquet of roses that were near the register. “If I’m not mistaken, roses are the most common flower purchased here, correct?”
Y/N nodded eagerly. “Yes! They’re considered the most romantic flowers after all. Symbolizing love, beauty, passion, and, of course, romance! We have a lot of people buying them as gifts for their partners.”
Korekiyo nodded. “Correct. There are many stories in multiple cultures and discuss the origins of the rose. One example is in Greek mythology, where the rose is a symbol of the goddess of love, Aphrodite. She had fallen in love with a mortal man named Adonis, but, one day, he was murdered by a wild boar while out hunting. As he held to death in the goddess’s arms, her tears and his blood mixed onto the soil, producing the red blossom that would be later known as the rose.”
Y/N nodded. “Yeah, I actually heard that story before. It’s probably one of the most popular myths about the rose. I’m not really someone who’s interested in mythology, but my assistant showed me that myth and it did interest me.”
“Then I believe it may please you to know that there are other myths about the origins of flowers around the world. If you wish, I can tell you some of them.”
Y/N immediately nodded. “Yes, please! This stuff is really interesting. I definitely don’t know all the myths out there, so I’ll love to learn.”
“Khehe…I’m glad to hear. Most feel like my teachings can be far too long and lose interest about halfway through. So, it is enjoyable to have someone be curious and interested in what I have to say.”
Y/N giggled softly. “I find it hard to believe that people grow bored of your lectures. This is actually one of the most interesting conversations I had.”
Korekiyo closed his eyes for a moment. “I’m glad I can capture your interest. Now then, there are other myths about the origin of roses. Such as in Arabic mythology-”
Y/N listened to Korekiyo talk about the myth, captured by every word he said. He really was one of the most interesting people they had ever met. Sure, he was a little creepy and they were nervous about talking with them before, but, now, all their nervousness seemed to have faded away. Instead, a shock of energy traveled through their bones as they stared and listened. Korekiyo looked…really beautiful as he talked. His nimble, bandaged fingers moving gracefully as he gestured to the roses and made motions with his hands. His long, ocean-green hair gracefully falling over his shoulders and brushing against his hips. His golden eyes glowing with passionate intelligence. It all was so entrancing and Y/N felt themselves getting more and more pulled in with every word that was spoken in his gentle whisper.
There are most likely other myths that address the origins of these flowers, but those are the ones that I can currently think of. I could glance back at my notes and search for others if you’re still interested. Or perhaps, I could continue on another topic that you’re interested in learning about.”
“I’m happy with either!” Y/N smiled. “I’m just…having fun just talking with you. Or…with you teaching me about these myths and cultures. Either way, I want to keep talking and spending time with you. Is it weird to say that about someone I just met?”
Korekiyo didn’t say anything for a moment before shaking his head. Y/N felt a hungry delight in their chest once they saw his rose-tinted cheeks through his mask. “Not at all…I’m enjoying this night as well. Like, I’ve mentioned, it’s quite rare to have someone be this invested in anthropology and what I have to say. However, I do think the night must come to a close. It’s getting quite late and I imagine that you have to go home now.”
Y/N’s eyes widened as they looked at the time. 11:45 pm. Did time really go by so fast? Their shoulders slumped as they went to unlock the door with their key in hand. ‘Well…at least I could see him in the shop again tomorrow…’ they thought as they turned the lock.
However, the moment that Y/N glanced up to see Korekiyo walking towards the door, the idea of having to wait in their cold and lonely apartment until they get to see him again suddenly felt like torture. It grew worse the moment that Korekiyo walked by them and a strand of his teal hair brushed against Y/N’s cheek. Desire began to cause their entire body to ache, and it felt like a switch turned on in their head that already decided something.
Now that they had met Korekiyo Shinguji, they didn’t want to spend tonight alone without him.
“H-hey, Shinguji!” Y/N called, quickly locking the door and running after him. “I-it can be very dangerous in these parts at night…so, wouldn’t it be a good idea if we walked home together? You know…for safety reasons.”
Korekiyo raised an eyebrow upon noticing Y/N’ averting their gaze away from him and their red face, but he nodded regardless. “Of course. That would be wise…”
Y/N couldn't stop the massive grin that appeared on their face as they walked away from the flower shop into the night. They suddenly were hyper aware of Korekiyo’s fingers brushing against their own, noticing how close he was…once again, their desire took over and they boldly intertwined their fingers with his, confidence brewing up inside. If Korekiyo noticed the spontaneous decision, he didn’t comment on it.
They continued walking under the moon’s gentle silver light. The cold wind brushed against Y/N’s face and clothes as they continued walking, but they hardly noticed. Instead, they could only pay attention to the blazing fire that was burning in their chest as they walked closer and closer to their apartment. However, at the back of their mind, there was a little voice nagging at the back of their mind, saying, ‘This is weird…first, this guy suddenly appears in the shop at night and now you’re walking home with him? This may be dangerous…’ However, Y/N ignored the voice.
After a bit more walking, they approached a small graveyard that rested halfway of the path to Y/N’s apartment. With every step that they took, Y/N’s desire grew and grew until it was an uncontrolled inferno. They couldn’t take it anymore. They felt like they had to make the first move right at that moment. The remaining bit of logic that was left in Y/N’s brain screamed at them that something was wrong. It yelled as it tried to remind them of the dangers of the graveyard. What was it again…? Y/N didn’t know, but, at the moment, they didn’t care as they pushed the voice away.
Suddenly, they stopped walking, preventing Korekiyo from continuing to walk forward. “Y/N? Are you alright?”
Korekiyo’s voice drowned the subconscious screams echoing in their head. They smiled sweetly and grabbed both of Korekiyo’s hands, their doe-like eyes filled with lust as they stared up at him. “Never better! I just…feel like we should stop for a bit….”
A small hidden smile crept upon Korekiyo’s face as soon as he heard their answer. He removed one of his hands from the florist’s affectionate grasp, and lifted it up to caress their cheek before resting gently underneath their chin. They felt their cheeks turn pink the moment that his slender fingers brushed their chin gently. Was…he going to do what they thought he was going to?
‘STOP!’’ Their subconscious yelled. ‘GET OUT OF THERE! RUN! THIS IS DANGEROUS! YOU’VE JUST MET HIM. THIS-’
Y/N tuned out the annoying voice buzzing around in their brain. It needed to shut up. Didn’t it understand that it wasn’t every day a handsome, intelligent, and fascinating person wanted to kiss them of all people? They couldn’t let this opportunity pass by. Besides, this wasn’t threatening. This wasn’t fear. It was the thrill and excitement that bubbled inside them from this budding romance. This was…love.
“Close your eyes,” Korekiyo requested politely, calm as he patiently waited for the florist’s response. With no hesitation, Y/N did so and leaned in closer to him. He sighed in disappointment. He had really hoped that they weren’t going to end up having the same fate as all the others. Oh well…he supposed…it couldn’t be helped. Korekiyo removed his hand from their chin for a moment to lower his mask and leaned in, his eyes fluttering shut.
The gentle warmth of his lips enveloping theirs caused them to gasp slightly. Cold shivers ran down their entire body and assisted in cooling their fire, freezing them in place. Korekiyo, taking the lead, wrapped an arm around their shoulders and pulled them closer. For a moment, they had no idea how to respond. What…was this? They never had anyone kiss them like this before, and yet…it felt amazing. Their heart pounded as they felt the butterflies dance in the stomach. The kiss had every muscle tingling at this newfound spark that ignited. They quickly reacted as they stood on their toes to reach his height and returned the kiss, adding more to the thrill of kissing a complete stranger. They knew that they barely knew who this guy was, but…kissing him felt so right. At least, for a moment…
The florist’s hands reached up to hold his face in their hands, but…his cheeks felt wet alongside the warmth. Like there was something dripping down from his cheeks. And…there was something odd about the way his cheeks felt…their fingers felt like they were tracing the outline of a jack-o-lanturn’s mouth. Squishing sounds filled their ears as their fingers investigated, and they immediately pulled away in shock. “What in the-”
They never got a chance to finish their sentence. Sudden pain stabbed at them, causing them to clutch their chest as they suddenly began to gag and cough violently. Scarlet splashed onto the gray concrete sidewalk as it dripped from the florist’s lips. They dropped to their knees, unable to stop the boiling sensation in their throat and the pounding in their head as they attempted to gasp for breath. All they could see were Korekiyo’s black boots as they stood over them.
“W-what….are you…” Their vision slowly grew blurry as the boots only became a black fuzzy blur. They forced themselves to themselves to look up at the figure standing over them. What is happening? They must be delusional or something because even with their blurry vision, they could see that…Korekiyo was transparent?
“I was hoping to spare you…” Korekiyo sighed, remorse painting his voice. “You were probably one of the most charming people that I have met, my dear, and your beauty was some of the finest that humanity had to offer. Just like the most beautiful lily. However…my curse isn’t something that can be beaten that easily. What a shame. Well, I suppose that humanity didn’t deserve your beauty anyways. This is a much better fate for someone as lovely as yourself.”
The florist glared at Korekiyo with a look as venomous as the poison flowing through their body. “Y-you…wicked…son of a-”
They couldn’t even finish their sentence as they collapsed on their side, feeling like they were having their energy sucked out of them. They…wanted to sleep. Sleep and make all this pain go away. Yeah…sleeping sounded amazing right now. Just…sleep…
….and never wake up.
Before they gave into the temptation to fall into a deep deep sleep, Y/N forced themselves to glance up at the face that they had spent their final moments with. The mask had completely fallen to the ground and was lying next to their weak body, revealing Korekiyo’s face. As their vision cleared to look upon Korekiyo’s face one last time, they saw something that would haunt them for their entire afterlife…
Beneath the mask was a massive gash running across his face, carving his mouth to a wide ear-to-ear grin. His skin was ripped apart from around the gash, revealing the tissue that the weapon tore apart. Scarlet blood dripped down from the scar, falling down his chin and staining his lips with a bright red that clashed with his definitely transparent body. The florist could’ve sworn they saw his natural mouth giving them a terrifying smile as he looked upon their pitiful state.
The ghost of Korekiyo Shinguji knelt down to the florist and used one hand to gently caress their cheek. “Humanity is truly beautiful, isn’t it? Even the death of a soul as pure as yours is beautiful. I’m pleased to see that you’ve died as graceful as you lived, my love.”
His smile widened as he looked upon them, causing the massive scar to grow even wider and become even more grotesque. Before everything went black, a final question was asked to the florist. One that they would never be able to answer.
“What about me…am I beautiful as well?”

Komanami Week Day 5: Talent-Swap
Summary | Nagito Komaeda is finally allowed to leave the walls of his castle and attend Hope’s Peak Academy. But, there’s a price. To make sure that he’s protected while at the academy, he is assigned a bodyguard to be by his side during his studies. Luckily for him, his bodyguard just happens to be a very cute girl…
❥ Pairing | Nagito Komaeda x Chiaki Nanami
★ Word Count | 3,913 words
@c0rrupted-mov
*So…I kinda broke my promise about this being out right after Day 4, and I’m really sorry about that! I ended up getting sick and I didn't have the motivation at the time to write. The universe really doesn’t want me to do this, huh? Well, fuck you illness! I’ve made a commitment and I’m going to see it through! So, this is Day 5 of Komanami Week where I chose Talent-Swap, instead I didn’t switch Nagito’s and Chiaki’s talents. I swapped everyone’s talents! So, now we have an Ultimate Swordswoman Chiaki Nanami and an Ultimate Prince Nagito Komaeda! Why? Because I like the idea of Nagito simping while Chiaki kicks ass. I personally think I made Nagito have a bit of Adrien Agreste and Makoto vibes in this one, but it’s fine! He does have a completely different talent after all. So, yeah, without further ado, grab some snacks and enjoy! And again, sorry for errors.*
“Lady Tsurugi, may I speak with  you?” a boy with hair as white as snow asked, approaching from the grand stone hallway of the palace. He was fidgeting slightly as he kept his gray eyes on the royal advisor, biting his lip.
“Prince Nagito, please stop biting your lip,” Tsurugi said. “You’re going to draw blood. But, of course. What is it you wish to speak with me about?”
Nagito immediately stopped doing so, and stood up straight as he took a deep breath. “It’s about my request, Lady Tsurugi. The Hope’s Peak Academy entry letter.”
“Ah…” Tsurugi nodded. “You’re wishing to know what I say about it now that I’ve had some time to think, yes?”
Nagito nodded eagerly. “If that’s not a problem. Have you made your decision about allowing me to attend school there?”
Tsurugi sighed. “Yes, I have. I know you’ve been in the palace for the majority of your life, Your Highness. I can tell that you’re desperate for a chance to leave and gain a bit of independence.”
“Y-Yes…but I understand if you’re not going to allow me to go,” Nagito said, eyes darting away from her face as he messed with the sash around his torso. “In case…something happens while I’m studying and you can’t protect me…”
“On the contrary,” Tsurugi smiled. “I’ve decided that I will allow you to go to Hope’s Peak Academy.”
“Ah…” Nagito’s eyes widened. He was completely prepared to bargain and beg for the chance to go to the prestigious academy. He wasn’t expecting it to be this easy! “R-really? Are you sure, Lady Tsurugi?”
Tsurugi nodded, a warm smile on her face. “Yes…I’ve thought about it and I decided that it would be healthy for you to be able to communicate with others your own age. And considering that the students of Hope’s Peak are at the same social standing as you, I figured that this is a perfect opportunity.”
Nagito just stood there, his jaw dropping for a moment before speaking again. “Forgive me. I’m utterly grateful for your generosity, Lady Tsurugi, but…I thought you claimed that you’re not going to do anything that you feel disrupts my safety. I thought that you were going to definitely refuse to let me go.”
“Well, let’s say I found a compromise for us,” she said, turning her attention to a computer in front of her. “I could send one of the maids to travel with you and live with you to make sure that you’re not living by yourself. As for school, I’ve found someone who can act as your bodyguard when at Hope’s Peak.”
“A bodyguard?”
Tsurugi nodded. “She got into Hope’s Peak as the Ultimate Swordswoman and has experience with guarding the most important people in Japan. So, I spoke with her family and requested that she accompany you when at school.”
“The Ultimate Swordswoman?” Nagito rested his chin on his hand. “She sounds like she’s rather experienced…what’s her name?”
“Chiaki Nanami. She’s apparently a rather quiet girl and her family is worried about her being able to fit in with her classmates. So, they’re grateful that you’ll be there with her. You two could possibly become friends. So, I’ll allow you to go to Hope’s Peak Academy as long as you find this girl and allow her to work as your bodyguard. Does that sound like a fair trade, Your HIghness?”
Nagito nodded immediately. “Absolutely! To spend time with such a talented swordswoman! Why, someone as lowly as me doesn’t deserve the honor!”
Tsurugi deadpanned at him. “Your Highness…you’re literally the future king of an entire kingdom…but, I’m pleased to see you being so agreeable with my terms.” A small smile appeared on the royal advisor’s face as the prince happily skipped away to prepare.
…
Nagito smiled as he recalled how Lady Tsurugi was generous enough to allow him to attend Hope’s Peak Academy and finally be able to go to school like any normal teenager. It was just too kind of her! And now…he was here. Standing in front of the door to his new classroom. His smile widened as he felt his heart pounding in his chest. He couldn’t believe it! He was actually here! Behind this door…was his new class with a bunch of talented teenagers that were going to be his classmates. He could hardly wait.
He brushed the dust off of his black tailcoat vest before reaching towards the door, sliding it open with one movement of his hand. He walked inside and…
“Ah!” A girl with red hair wearing a green kimono turned towards the door as soon as Nagito entered. “Another new student!”
Nagito felt heads turn towards him as he walked into the room. Most of the students that were sitting in the classroom wore the brown Hope Peak’s school uniform although there were a few exceptions such as the girl in the kimono. Some of the students had done something similar to Nagito where they added their own personal touches to the uniform, such as a brown-haired boy wearing an olive green jacket and headphones. Nagito looked around at all the students in the room. They seemed to be full of talent and radiated a powerful aura of hope that almost seemed intimidating. It made Nagito eager to talk to all of them.
The teacher, an orange-haired woman wearing a tank top underneath a long blue coat, smiled at Nagito. “Hello there! Are you one of my new students?”
Nagito nodded. “Yes. My name is Nagito Komaeda. It’s a pleasure to meet you.”
The woman gave him a warm smile. “Pleasure to meet you too, Komaeda. I’m your teacher, Miss Yukizome. Let’s see…where to put you. Ah! Why not sit over at the empty desk in front of Hinata?” Miss Yukizome gestured over to a desk in front of the boy with the headphones, who was currently absorbed in the video game he had in his hand.
Nagito nodded. “Very well then.” With that, he walked over towards the desk at the back of the classroom and sat down. With a friendly smile, he turned around to the boy with the headphones. “Hello. It’s very nice to meet you. You’re, Hinata, right?”
The boy lifted his head up to look at him before nodding. “Yep. I’m Hajime Hinata. The Ultimate Gamer. Uh, Komaeda, right?”
Nagito nodded before bowing his head slightly. “Yes, I’m Nagito Komaeda, the Ultimate Prince! I do hope that we’re able to become good friends.”
Hajime nodded slowly, staring at Nagito with a blank expression. “Yeah, that would be nice. But…there’s no need to bow…”
“Oh!” Nagito immediately lifted his head up, his cheeks turning a pale pink. “My apologies.”
“Oh!” Nagito immediately lifted his head up, his cheeks turning a pale pink. “My apologies.”
“Okay…” Miss Yukizome suddenly called out, looking down at a clipboard. “Looks like nearly everyone is here. Let’s see…all we have left is Chiaki Nanami.”
Nagito immediately turned around when he heard that name, like a hound dog when food arrives. The Ultimate Swordswoman. The girl that’s supposed to protect him. When is she going to come into the classroom? Nagito began to stare intensely at the door, waiting for it to open.
“Oh, I ran into Nanami earlier!” A girl with multi-colored streaks in her hair and a leotard under her blazer said. “She was totally in the zone! Even a massive bomb falling out of a sky wouldn’t break her focus! It’s so cool!!”
Miss Yukizome sighed. “Well, I suppose I’ll have to go and get her then,” she said, but before she could even leave from the podium, Nagito raised his hand.
“If you want, Miss Yukizome, I can find Nanami for you,” Nagito said. “After all, we wouldn’t want to delay class any further than necessary. So, it may be easier if I go get her myself.”
She considered it for a moment before nodding. “Well, alright. Try not to take too long now, okay?”
“Of course,” he nodded as he stood up and left the classroom. The previously bustling hallways were now nearly empty with most of the students already in their classrooms. With the help of a map of the layout of the academy, Nagito made his way to the school’s dojo, heart fluttering in excitement as he tried to picture what Chiaki Nanami was like. Was she cool and serious? Aggressive and bloodthirsty? Noble and daring? Millions of possibilities danced in his head as he approached the dojo and opened the door.
The walls and floor of the dojo was made out of dark wood that seemed to give the room a mysterious and traditional feel to it. Nagito could feel the floorboards creaking underneath his feet as he stepped inside the dimly lit room. Painted on a screen near the back was a beautiful scene of a dark night sky with gentle sakura trees standing on the sides of a stone-textured sidewalk, their gentle petals falling and covering it. And that’s where she was, wearing a white kendo uniform.
She knelt in front of the screen, her back facing Nagito. She didn’t even seem to notice him as she faced straight ahead, deep in her concentration. Nagito took a cautious step towards the mysterious girl. As he got even closer, suddenly, like an animal sending danger, she spun around. Nagito felt something long and wooden jab the air right beside him, barely missing his head by mere inches.
He looked down at the petite girl, who was studying him with a curious look on her face. Her  pale mauve hair that was tied into a bun with two strands framing her face. Holding her bun in place was a hot pink ribbon that was tied into a bow at the back of her head. Her sleepy-looking pale pink eyes observed him with a quiet tranquility, as if she didn’t have a bamboo sword nearly pressing against his neck.
There was an awkward silence for a few moments, with Nagito keeping a close eye on the bamboo sword at the edge of his neck. Until finally, the girl put her sword down and spoke in a soft voice. “Sorry…you scared me.”
‘You were scared?’ he thought. She didn’t look that scared when she nearly attacked him, but he decided to not comment about it. Instead he smiled awkwardly and rubbed his head. “It’s alright. I’m just simply glad that I didn’t lose my head. Uh, I take it you are Chiaki Nanami?”
She nodded. “That’s right. And you are?”
Nagito bowed. “I’m Nagito Komaeda. The Ultimate Prince. It’s an honor to finally meet you, Lady Nanami.”
Chiaki stared at him with a blank expression on her face and stayed silent for several moments. Nagito felt his face burning up. ‘Goddammit, all to hell! She’s not saying anything! Why did I do the bowing thing again?! She must be thinking that I’m acting really odd right now! This is mortifying…’
He quickly got up and placed his hands firmly to his side. “Er, apologies for that! I’m…not really used to interacting with people my age.”
Chiaki shrugged. “It’s alright. I figured as much. Sorry for not responding…I’m just not really used to people bowing for me…so, you’re the prince that I’m supposed to be guarding?”
Nagito rubbed his head. “Y-yes…sorry for inconveniencing you with this task.”
She shook her head and smiled. “No worries. It’s actually quite an honor to be protecting a prince. I’ve actually never done that before. Besides, most of the people I protect are older than me, so it’s nice to actually be the bodyguard of someone my own age.”
“Is that so?” Nagito smiled. “Well then, I hope we get along. Ah, by the way, class had already started. I was sent by our teacher to come and get you.”
“Oh…” Chiaki looked surprised before she lowered her head. “My apologies. I tend to lose track of time when meditating. I’ll go get changed and we can head to the classroom.”
He nodded as Chiaki walked by him. “Very well then. I shall wait here until you’re ready.”
She went into the locker rooms to change. Meanwhile, Nagito placed a hand on his heart, sighing in relief. Thank goodness that his first meeting with Chiaki went well despite him bowing to her. He smiled to himself. She seemed like a lovely girl, and he hoped that they could become good friends in the future.
After a few moments of waiting, Chiaki came out of the locker rooms wearing her school uniform except instead of wearing the blazer, she wore a black shawl with a pink stripe on the bottom that matched her ribbon. Black fingerless gloves rested on her hands while tall black boots encased her legs. On her back, there was a pink sheath-like bag with a white ribbon tied at the end, which is most likely where she kept her sword.
“I see you like the color pink,” Nagito said, attempting to start up a conversation.
“Yeah,” Chiaki nodded. “I think it’s a pretty color though…people sometimes get surprised when I tell them. I guess it’s because pink’s not a color typically associated with a swordswoman.”
“Honestly, that’s a shame,” Nagito said, sighing. “I don’t understand how people can be shocked by someone liking a color because it doesn’t seem to “fit” them, whatever that’s supposed to mean. I think it’s a pleasant-looking color. It looks nice on you, Lady Nanami.”
“…thanks…” Chiaki said after a moment's hesitation before walking towards the classroom. Nagito followed after her, mentally facepalming at what he had just said. He was coming off as creepy, wasn’t he? Why was talking to people so hard?
“I-I apologize for my comment…” he said. “I’m just realizing that it may have sounded really…awkward…”
“Don’t worry about it,” she said, shaking her head. “It just caught me off guard. That’s all. Besides, it was sweet of you to compliment me, and I know you weren’t being weird when you said it. Try not to be so hard on yourself, Your Highness.”
“Y-your Highness?” Nagito repeated, his voice cracking slightly.
“Yeah…?” Chiaki turned around, tilting her head slightly. “You’re a prince, right? So, if I’m going to be working for you then I should respect your status.”
“N-no!” Nagito shook his head. “Please, no need for formalities. I would much prefer you calling me Komaeda. I’m a regular student just like you, so I would like to be treated like one.”
Chiaki nodded. “Understood. Sorry, Komaeda.”
With that, the two arrived at the classroom and went inside. Miss Yukizome looked up from what she was writing on the board and smiled at them. “Ah, you must be Nanami! Welcome! I’m your new teacher, Miss Yukizome. It’s a pleasure to meet you.”
“Hi,” Chiaki waved. “It’s nice to meet you, too.”
Miss Yukizome nodded and turned to Nagito. “Thank you for bringing her here, Komaeda. Okay, there should be an empty seat next to Tsumiki. You can sit there, Nanami.”
Chiaki nodded and went over to sit next to a girl with choppy plum hair and some hamsters on her shoulders. Nagito made his way back to his seat in front of Hajime and the lesson began.
Nagito found himself being engaged throughout the whole day. He couldn’t understand why some of his classmates were complaining about some of the topics that they were learning. He found them extremely interesting, but perhaps it’s because he never had an experience like this, unlike the rest of his classmates. For the majority of the day, Nagito alternated his time between Hajime and Chiaki, wanting to learn more about them. During their conversations, Nagito learned about how the two each got their Ultimate titles. Apparently, Hajime got his Ultimate title due to a gaming competition he won when he was in elementary and Chiaki got hers from being able to beat multiple grown men in kendo matches. As they explained their stories, Nagito found himself hooked on every word, unable to believe that such amazing and talented people were talking to him.
Eventually, the school day ended and Nagito grabbed his bag and began to leave the classroom. As he walked towards the door, he heard a familiar soft voice from behind him. “Komaeda…”
He turned around to see Chiaki walking towards him. “Yes? Do you need something, Nanami?”
Chiaki shook her head. “I was just wondering if you wanted to walk home together. If my job is to be your bodyguard, then shouldn't I be by your side most of the time? Besides, this also gives us the opportunity to learn a bit more about each other.”
Nagito didn’t even hesitate before nodding his head. “Of course. It would be an honor to walk home with you, Lady Nanami.”
“Why are you calling me ‘Lady Nanami?’” Chiaki asked as they began to walk out of the classroom.
“Hm?” Nagito glanced at her. “Why, it’s a sign of respect. You’re a student of this prestigious academy after all, so I should address you accordingly. Besides, I address many of the high-ranking women in my kingdom as ‘Lady.’”
Chiaki crossed her arms and frowned. “So, you get to call me ‘Lady’, but I can’t call you ‘Your Highness.’ Seems a little hypocritical, Komaeda.”
Nagito chuckled. “Why, it isn’t hypocritical at all. You got into this academy for being such a talented swordswoman, after all. You proved yourself worthy of the title of the Ultimate Swordswoman, and the school addressed your amazing skills. I would consider that deserving of high respect. Meanwhile, with me…I only got into Hope’s Peak because I was a prince. There wasn’t any talent or work put into me being here.” Nagito frowned slightly and moved his gaze to his walking feet. “You’re far more deserving of being a student here than I am, so I want to show you the respect that you deserve, Lady Nanami. The only respect that I received is because I’m a prince, which is an insult towards you. That’s all.”
Chiaki stayed silent for a moment, seemingly deep in thought. As he opened the academy’s doors, Nagito wondered if she was now taking in what he had said and was now deciding to spend her time with people that are just like her. Who got into Hope’s Peak because they proved that they deserved to be called the most talented people in Japan.
“Komaeda, I-” Before Chiaki could even finish her sentence, they could hear yelling up ahead. They looked over at the entrance gates of Hope’s Peak. Two guys were yelling at each other, arguing as they shoved at each other.
“Huh? What’s going on?” Nagito asked as his eyes widened at the scene before him.
“They’re having a fight…” Chiaki replied, pointing out the obvious.
“I can see that, but why?” Nagito quickly ran over to where the boys were fighting. “Hey! What are you two doing?”
The two guys stopped arguing for a moment and turned to glare at Nagito. “None of your damn business!” One of them scowled. “Run along and forget you saw anything!”
Nagito felt his knees tremble slightly as the guy glared down at him. His muscular frame completely cast a shadow over Nagito’s skinny one. His eyes leered down at him, like a predator eyeing its prey before it pounced. Nagito gulped, but he stood his ground and continued talking.
“W-well…you shouldn’t be fighting in front of the school’s entrance. Someone could get hurt! Please, isn’t there a way we could peacefully solve the issue at hand?”
“What are you? Some kind of pick-me who thinks that their presence alone can easily get anyone to listen?” The other guy snarled, rolling his eyes.
“N-no! That’s not-“ Nagito couldn’t even finish his sentence as he felt the first guy grab his vest and pulled him close to his face.
“Looks like someone needs to learn to mind his own business,” he grinned maniacally. “And I’m glad to be the teacher…”
Nagito felt cold sweat dripping down his forehead as he stared into those bloodthirsty eyes. He was petrified as he watched the guy clench his fist, ready to punch his lights out. Nagito shut his eyes, bracing himself for the impact of the fist to meet his pale face.
“Let him go.” Nagito gasped as the soft voice of Chiaki Nanami spoke from behind him. He opened his eyes and glanced back to see Chiaki holding her bamboo sword with a calm yet baleful gaze. “He has nothing to do with your fight, so please let him go.”
The second guy snorted. “What? You expect me to listen to you, sweetheart? You may look cute and all with your little sword, but you don’t scare me.”
Chiaki’s gaze hardened. “Let him go…I would rather not have to knock someone out.”
Both of the boys looked at each other before bursting out into laughter. “Or else what?” The first asked.
“You really think you could knock us out?!” The second guy taunted. “I’d like to see you try.”
Chiaki closed her eyes and remained silent for a moment. Her hair cast a shadow over her face, so Nagito couldn’t properly read her expression. Finally, after moments of the only sound being the two guys laughing, a small smirk appeared on her face.
“I tried to warn you…”
And just like that, Chiaki leapt at the two guys. Nagito couldn’t even see when she had striked. One minute, he was being held in the air by the first guy and the next, he was on the ground, staring at the sight in front of him. The two guys fell to the ground, knocked unconscious as Chiaki stood over them, placing her bamboo sword in her sheath. Nagito was left speechless as he knelt on the ground, trying to process what happened.
Chiaki smiled sweetly as she looked down at the two unconscious boys. “No fighting on school grounds.” She then bent over and grabbed each of their left arms before looking up at Nagito.
“Best not to be so naive next time, Your Highness,” she said, a teasing look in her eyes. “I can’t be knocking people out each time you try to stop a fight.”
Nagito didn’t say anything. Instead, he just stared at Chiaki, his jaw dropping. She walked past him, dragging the two guys behind her with zero struggle, as if they weighed nothing to her. “I’ll go take these two to the nurse’s office now. It would be cruel to leave them out here after I knocked them out. Please wait for me, Your Highness.”
With that, Chiaki left, leaving Nagito on the ground like an idiot. He could feel his heart racing as he thought back to how Chiaki looked standing over the two boys she knocked out. The graceful way her hair, shawl, and skirt fluttered against the wind. The confident way she stood, making her seem taller than she really was. The way that she balanced herself by gently stepping on one of the guy’s backs, careful not to hurt him any further. He felt his whole body heat up as he came to the realization…that was attractive…really attractive. Nagito was suddenly glad that Chiaki had left because she couldn’t see the heavily infatuated grin that was now resting on his face.
He made a mental note to heavily thank Lady Tsurugi for this whole arrangement when he got back…

Komanami Week Day 4: In-game
Summary | When separating to go explore the Funhouse, Nagito wishes to go exploring with Chiaki. She decides to use this opportunity to try to get to understand him. However...he proves to be able to bring out so many emotions in her..
❥ Pairing | Nagito Komaeda x Chiaki Nanami
★ Word Count | 4,217 words
@c0rrupted-mov
*Wooo! I finally have Day 4 out! I'm so sorry this was late! Like I said, school is really trying to prevent me from posting these, but I made a commitment and I'm sticking to it. Now then, this entry is based on the interaction in the game where Nagito wants to explore the Funhouse with Chiaki in Chapter 4 since I found that there's potential for it. Hopefully, Day 5 would be up by tomorrow if I'm lucky. But, for now, grab some snacks and enjoy! And sorry if there's any errors.*
'This is competing with the Despair Disease for the weirdest motive ever...I think,' Chiaki thought as she stared the tacky strawberry-patterned walls of the funhouse. Yep, that's right. Funhouse. For some reason, Monokuma decided that the fourth motive for murder was to place them all in some sort of weird funhouse with the ugliest decor ever. Chiaki was now wondering if he was just simply having fun with his motives or if he was going insane. Then again, he was probably always insane. Regardless, they were trapped here now and everyone was making groups to go and explore the house.
“Well Miss Sonia, I guess it’s time we also…” Kazuichi called out to her. Chiaki turned towards him with a deadpanning expression on her face. For some reason...she had a feeling that he wasn't going to get what he wanted.
“Sonia already left with Tanaka,” Mechamaru said, deciding to immediately break it to him. Yep, she was right. Now, to see how badly Kazuichi takes this.
“...huh?” Kazuichi gasped, slumping with wide eyes.
“Awww, you got dumped,” Nagito teased with an awkward chuckle. A bead of sweat dripped down from Chiaki’s forehead. She doesn’t think dumped was the right way to describe it. To be dumped meant that Kazuichi had to be in a relationship with Sonia in the first place. But, she wasn’t going to point that out.
“I-idiot! I didn’t get dumped! Why would I get dumped?! In fact, I’m really popular!” Kazuichi yelled, deep in denial. Chiaki sighed. Yep. He didn’t really take this too well. She was starting to feel bad for him at this point. She made a mental note to try to talk to him and have him deal with his “Sonia issues” later.
“Now then, I think it’s time for me to get going too, so…” Nagito’s voice trailed off for a second as he turned his head to Chiaki. “Nanami, would you like to go together?”
“....Me?” She questioned, tilting her head. This was…unexpected to say the least. She definitely wasn’t the first person that she would’ve expected Nagito to want to team up with. She wondered if he had some sort of secret reason for wanting to go with her specifically. Maybe he trusted that she could find clues quickly or maybe he wanted to try to figure out what her “hope” is? She doesn’t want to immediately jump to the conclusion that he was already planning something, but she knew that Nagito’s reasons were probably not that simple. After all, he has shown time and time again that he can be a very cunning and calculating guy, and his motivations are never that simple…
“I haven’t really had the chance to talk to you, so I thought this was a great opportunity…” he told her, answering her internal questions as if he could sense them..
‘…or his reason could be as straightforwardly innocent as that,’ Chiaki thought, suddenly feeling like a huge idiot. She supposed it was her karma for immediately assuming that he was up to something.. Well, she supposed it wouldn’t be that bad to explore with him. Yes, she may have to keep her guard up, but she doubts that he’ll try something immediately. So, there was no harm in giving him a bit of her trust.
Chiaki smiled slightly as she played with her hair. Plus…it was slightly flattering to know that Nagito wants to spend time with her…While a part of her is a little embarrassed to admit it, her heart was practically fluttering at all the possibilities that spending some time with Nagito could bring. Of course, she was mostly looking forward to a chance to possibly be able to understand Nagito, but still…she couldn’t help but be weirdly excited to explore the funhouse alone with him!
“Then…take me with you, too,” Kazuichi interrupted her thoughts, knocking all the possibilities to the water. “Three people is okay, right?”
Chiaki snapped herself out of her imagination by facepalming. ‘Get it together, Chiaki…you have more important things to worry about now.’ Although…she would be lying if she said that a small frown didn’t find its way to her face when Kazuichi made his suggestion.
“Huh? That’s fine, but…” Tension began to fill the air the moment that Nagito made his next sentence with a gentle smile. “Oh I get it! Soda’s trying to avoid Hinata!”
After Nagito let those troublesome rumor-like words escape his lips, hell broke loose. Chiaki felt her blood turn cold as she witnessed Hajime and Kazuichi arguing over the former’s trustworthiness. Kazuichi was saying stuff about them not knowing the real Hajime and how his personality could easily shift if or when he revealed himself as the traitor, like Mikan’s did in the previous trial. Hajime seemed so hurt by Kazuichi’s lack of trust in him, and Chiaki felt a wave of guilt wash over her as the topic of the traitor was brought up again. However, all she could do was watch.
“I’m sorry Hajime…I really do want to trust you…” Kazuichi said before turning away from him. “...But I just can’t yet. That’s why I’m going with Nanami...It’s not like…I want to go with Komaeda either.”
Hajime didn’t say anything to do that, and, instead, just glared at the ground. Kazuichi walked over to where Nagito and Chiaki were standing.
“If that’s the case, it is what it is,” Nagito shrugged. “Why don’t you come along with us, Soda?”
“Ah, but…” Chiaki shot Hajiime a concerned look as her sentence died down in her throat.
“It’s fine, Nanami…” he reassured, though his tone didn’t really convey that message. “Just go…”
Once again, guilt spread across Chiaki’s body as she looked at the depressed look on Hajime’s face. She knew that Hajime wasn’t the traitor…she knew who it actually was. But, the truth was caught in her throat. She wanted to scream that she was the traitor and explain everything, but…she couldn’t. All she could do was give Hajime a look of sympathy as the key to getting everyone to trust each other clogged itself in her voice…
“Ok…” she finally said. “I’ll see you later.” She left Hajime standing there with Mechamaru as she, Nagito, and Kazuichi went down the stairs into the first floor. And once again…Chiaki was met with more tacky strawberry-patterned red walls that burned her eyes. Somebody really needed to teach Monokuma about interior design.
“Well, I suppose we better start looking around,” Nagito said cheerfully as he swept the floor. Chiaki didn’t say anything. She didn’t really feel like talking to neither him nor Kazuichi right now. Her eyes narrowed as she glared up at the hideous red walls of the funhouse. She couldn’t believe what happened earlier. Did Kazuichi really find it hard to trust Hajime? After everything they've been through as a team? Logically, she understands why he’s so hesitant. After all, they were, unfortunately, in an environment where even placing an ounce of trust in the wrong person could get you killed. Plus, after what happened with Mikan the last trial…it would be hard to trust anyone after that. But still…it was frustrating to see Kazuichi immediately fall for the idea that Hajime couldn’t be trusted. Didn’t anyone understand that they needed to work together to get out of here?
And Nagito…what was even the point of bringing it up? There was no reason for him to benefit from suggesting that Hajime was the traitor, so why did he? Did he…really believe it? Or was he just trying to stir up trouble? Chiaki could feel her fists clenching just from trying to figure out how his confusing head works. The moment she thinks she is starting to peg down his logic patterns and figure him out, he plays another card and leaves her back at level 1. It was a constant cycle! And on top of that…Chiaki was being reminded of those weird feelings that she felt when Nagito first asked her to go with him. That fluttering of her heart. Being flattered. That excitement from the idea of being alone with him. It all added to the equation of confusion.
Well, at least, she supposed that it was good that she and Nagito weren’t alone together. Things may have been really awkward then…though…she was still disappointed that Kazuichi was with them.
Chiaki sighed, rubbing her temple. Nagito Komaeda really brought out a lot of her emotions, didn’t he?
“Hey, Nanami, did I make you upset?” A raspy voice whispered in her ear, sending shivers down her spine. She jumped slightly and turned around to see Nagito right behind her, a curious expression on her face. Speaking of the devil…
“You didn’t have to make people distrust Hinata by saying he’s the traitor,” Chiaki told him, crossing her arms. “Because it’s not true.”
“How do you know that?” Nagito questioned, smiling slightly. “When it comes to pre-existing information about him, there’s hardly any to dig into. We don’t even know about his Ultimate Talent. Surely, that has to be suspicious, right?”
‘I know because I’m the traitor…’ Instead of saying that, Chiaki just shook her head. “There’s no solid evidence of Hinata being the traitor. I think suspicion isn’t the same as certainty. So, considering that he’s my friend, I’m going to choose to trust him.”
Nagito didn’t say anything and, instead, turned away from Chiaki to observe the wall some more. Was it just her imagination…or was his usually carefree face looking a little sour right now?
“Well, I didn’t ask to partner with you to talk about whether or not Hinata’s the traitor,” Nagito said, forcefully changing the subject. “I want to get to know you, Nanami! Soda’s moved to another part of the first floor to find Sonia-I mean-explore! So, we have time to ourselves.”
Chiaki played with the sleeve of her jacket, her heart pounding. So, much for being grateful about not being alone with Nagito. Still, she shouldn’t let things get awkward. She looked up and nodded. “There’s a lot of things that I want to know about you, Komaeda. So, I guess there won’t be any harm in talking.”
Nagito grinned, keeping steady eye contact with her. “That’s what I like to hear, Nanami.”
Chiaki felt her pulse quicken slightly as Nagito’s gray eyes bore into her own pink ones, but she forced her expression to remain neutral. If she wanted to get any information out of Nagito, she had to remain calm. Not let any opportunities for him to catch her off guard slip in.
“There was something that I was wondering for a while now, Komaeda…” Chiaki said, walking away as she continued investigating. “You keep talking about wanting to side with hope whenever we’re in trials, but I’ve never really understood what that meant. One moment you would be helping us find the killer, and then the next, we find out that you were involved with the case somehow. So…what exactly do you get by playing double-agent?”
Nagito grinned at her, clearly showing excitement towards her curiosity. “Well…it’s rather complicated to explain, Nanami. So, it would be better if I just…described how important hope is to me. Nanami, would you describe it as a positive feeling? I mean, it allows us to be motivated to achieve so much more. When we have hope, we’re able to reach happiness, our goals, and it’s the moving factor that gets us through the darkest despair. That’s true, right?”
“Um…yes?” Chiaki raised an eyebrow. She definitely thought that Nagito was kind of exaggerating a bit, but she did admit that he kind of had a point. But…where is he going with this?
“Well, wouldn’t you agree that someone who does something in the name of hope, even murder, deserves some sort of praise?” His eyes darkened as he circled her like a panther surrounding its prey, that massive grin still resting on his face. “After all, the person who did that clearly was exhibiting it. They were willing to risk everything they had in order to hold on to the possibility of achieving their goal in the end. Their hope was so strong that they never gave up. And in the end, if they work hard enough, hope wins, like it always does. I just find that so admirable and amazing!”
Chiaki’s eyes widened as she stared at Nagito with a baffled look on her face. He seemed to notice her silence because he stopped circling her, instead gliding over to stand in front of her. “So…adding onto what I said, there are constant clashes between where a stronger hope devours the weaker hope. It’s like a fighting game. One hope is up against others and each is trying to win the match. Each hope is constantly giving everything they got to crush the others, using whatever attacks they have access to. However…only one can make it to the top. So, one hope is constantly leveling up and getting stronger by defeating despair while the others are getting crushed by it. Eventually, that hope wins, proving itself to be worthy of becoming an absolute hope that can overcome any despair. Do you follow?”
Chiaki was silent for a moment as she processed what Nagito was saying. Honestly, she was grateful that he used a video game analogy to try to explain his weird beliefs because if he didn’t, she probably wouldn’t have been able to understand it as easily. Could it be that he predicted that she needed help figuring out what he was saying? Regardless, it helped her wrap her head around the insane concept slightly.
“So…if I’m getting this right,” Chiaki glanced up with a thoughtful hand on the bottom of her chin. “You’re saying that you just want to help someone’s hope become as strong as it can possibly be…and you don’t care if they’re the blackened or not…because you just want to see their hope shine so brightly to the point of defeating despair? And…if I take this theory further…you’re trying to cause despair to see who can overcome it?”
Nagito smiled brightly. “Wow! That’s exactly it! I didn’t expect anyone to finally understand what I’m getting at. You’re clearly a sharp person, Nanami, worthy of becoming a Symbol of Hope.”
Chiaki held a hand up to stop him. “I didn’t say I understood you. I just translated what you were saying to something that was more understandable. Actually, I personally think there are a few flaws in your logic.”
“Oh?” Nagito raised his eyebrow as he tilted his head playfully at her. “Well, I’m always interested in hearing what you have to say, Nanami, so go ahead!”
Chiaki nodded. “Firstly, what you’re describing to me…it’s making me think that you’re looking for the wrong hope. What kind of hope is one that involves hurting others? If anything, the hope you’re seeking almost sounds like some sort of evil version of it…I think.”
Nagito sighed. “I didn’t expect someone to sympathize with trash like me, but you have to at least see how full of hope, say, Hanamura was. He was so desperate to see his mother and diner again, and his hope was clearly burning inside him. Even if he was attempting to deny our situation, I could sense it. So…I decided to set up a little trap for him to pursue it…though it didn’t go exactly as I planned since Hanamura clearly wasn’t worthy of being a Symbol of Hope. What a shame...Anyways, to answer your question, I don’t think there’s a difference between a good hope or an evil one. It’s still hope that I want to help someone grow and become strong enough to be considered the Ultimate Hope, no matter who they are!”
“Ultimate Hope?” Chiaki questioned, her mind spinning as she listened to him. “What do you mean by that?”
A small sly smile crept onto Nagito’s face. “Why, it’s the title for whoever has the strongest hope. The hope that’s powerful enough to accomplish anything that they want to achieve and is worthy of defeating any kind of despair out there! That’s what I’m hoping to find! There’s a person out there that’s worthy of that title, and I want to help them achieve it!”
As he talked, Nagito’s eyes seemed to twist with his insane and corrupt ideologies. They swirled like spirals as he grinned at Chiaki, his gaze making her want to run away. His eyes…they looked the same as they did back in the first trial. Like a cruel mix of hope and despair…
Still, Chiaki wouldn’t run. She’s finally getting Nagito to open up slightly about his motivations and she wasn’t about to give up because she was intimidated by him. She gripped on the straps of her backpack tightly as she formed her next sentence.
“You have a passion towards this subject, I see…” she said, hesitation creeping into her voice. “But…for someone who loves hope so much, you’re pretty ignorant about the hopes of the rest of us.”
This seemed to catch Nagito off guard slightly as he gasped and leaned forward, interested. “Oh? What do you mean by that, Nanami?”
Normally, Chiaki would’ve probably backed up. But…this time was different. This time…she was so close to getting answers. So, instead, she stepped forward, causing her face to now be just inches away from his. “Do you even know what my hope was?”
“Huh?” Nagito seemed to be caught off guard with her question, but he quickly shook it off as he smiled. “Not yet…but I’m hoping to find out…”
“Don’t worry,” Chiaki said, her smile as sweet as the strawberries on the wall. “My hope…was for us to all leave together. As friends. But…”
Her voice faded away for a moment as images of each death flashed in her mind. She wrapped her arms around her and stared at the ground, avoid looking Nagito in the eye. “…I couldn’t achieve it. So many people have already died here, Komaeda….I wanted to try to keep everyone alive after Togami and Hanamura died. I didn’t want any more murders to happen, and I promised myself that I wouldn’t let it happen…but…”
Her body shook slightly. She hadn’t really let it sink in until now, but…seven people are dead. They’re gone. And they’re never returning to them. Chiaki felt her lip quiver as her body seemed to want to fall onto the floor. Seven people…dead…and she couldn’t do anything to stop it. Despite her goals and her reasons for being here, she couldn’t stop them from dying. She felt useless, being trapped in this funhouse until someone dies…unable to do anything. And even worse, her friends were fighting amongst themselves because of her…because she won’t reveal herself as the traitor…it was all her fault…
“N-Nanami…” Nagito’s voice grew soft, full of concern. He gently placed his hands on her shoulders. “Are you…crying?”
For a moment, she had forgotten where she was, what she was doing, and who was standing in front of her. She hadn’t even realized it until now, but with a touch of her cheek, she could feel the wetness against her skin. Huh..guess she was feeling more emotional than she initially thought. Those deaths must’ve had a toll on her after all. She smiled slightly. So much for keeping calm…
“Sorry,” she quickly wiped her eyes. “I lost myself there. What I’m trying to say is that…my hope is now crushed. Doesn’t that go against everything you’re for?”
Nagito glanced over to the side, not saying anything for a few minutes. Chiaki was pleased to see that she got him thinking…at least slightly. That must mean…maybe there’s hope for Nagito after all. Maybe he isn’t as twisted as he portrays himself as?
Nagito chuckled slightly. “I’m sorry, Nanami…that scum like me has crushed your hope. I never wanted to do that. But, I think it’s good. For you to be feeling some despair right now. After all, the despair will be-”
“A stepping stone to my hope,” Chiaki finished, glaring at him. “Yeah, I know what you’re going to say. And I don’t really want to hear it right now. So please…be quiet.”
While her voice still had the same soft tone that it always had, there seemed to be venom dripping down from her words. A silent anger directed at Nagito, one that wanted to poison him. To strike him down that very moment as revenge for crushing her hope. It wasn’t even what she intended to sound like, but she felt angry that, for a split second, she thought that he cared… And once he started saying all that stuff, her emotions seeped through her actions. It was weird for her and not following her usual behavior.
However, that silent anger seemed to have its benefits as Nagito immediately stopped talking. He immediately got his hands off her shoulder and just crossed his arms as he watched her finish wiping the tears off her face. The air was tense as the silence filled the whole room, and nobody made a sound for what felt like hours. Until finally…
“Are…you okay?” A soft voice came out of Nagito as he reached a hesitating hand towards her.
Chiaki finished wiping her tears away and faced him with her usual aloof expression. “Yeah. I’m fine. Sorry, I just let my emotions get the better of me for a minute.”
Nagito chuckled. “Well…despite you getting angry at me, I can’t help but feel that this experience has made you stronger…But, I am sorry for all of this, Nanami. I can tell that, despite the fact that you hardly show your despair, you are truly heartbroken by their deaths. And..I’m sorry for that.”
Chiaki shrugged it off, ignoring the throbbing pain that had suddenly bruised her heart. “It’s fine…I’m trying to keep going for them after all. Because…if we can’t all escape the island together, then I want to, at least, keep going and protect everyone else for the sake of the people who died…”
“So…that’s your new hope?”
She paused for a moment, slumping slightly as she considered what Nagito said. Then, she gave a slight nod. “I suppose…it hurts…but it would hurt more if I spent all my time crying instead of trying to escape.”
Nagito smiled, placing his hand back on her shoulder. “Then our talk was a success. You still have so much hope shining inside. That’s all I want, Nanami! But…if you want my advice…” He gazed into her eyes, and, for the first time, Chiaki noticed that they were filled with concern and…maybe guilt? “Allow yourself to grieve and don’t try to bottle up all those emotions…we wouldn’t want that hope inside burning up, would we?”
Chiaki remained silent, moving her eyes away from Nagito’s. He seemed to notice her discomfort because he then backed up. “Heh, it seems like you’re still angry. I apologize for touching you and causing you to cry in the presence of trash like me. To make up for it…if I’m able to…I’ll try to assist you in achieving your hope. I can’t make any promises that I’ll be able to do much, but I’ll try.”
For the first time since they started investigating together, Chiaki smiled. “I…appreciate that, Komaeda. You know…despite the fact that your ideas of hope are clearly corrupt…I don’t think you’re a bad person.”
Nagito’s eyes widened. “What?”
“I think…you do bad things. But…I wonder if this is because of this killing game, and if you are a different person in a different situation. So…I’m choosing to believe that deep down inside, you’re a good person. A good person with corrupt morals…but I think you have a reason for your beliefs…”
“That’s…” Nagito hesitated for a moment, allowing Chiaki to continue.
“You don’t have to tell me right now if you don’t want to…but, maybe I can find out one day.” She shrugged. “For now, I’m going to try to protect you, too, and find your hope. Because…you’re definitely not trash, Komaeda. Just because you have a talent that you don’t think is as good as ours doesn’t mean that you’re worthless. Besides, being the Ultimate Lucky Student is a good talent even if talent did matter. So, you’re just as important as the rest of us.”
For a moment, Nagito was rendered silent, staring at Chiaki with eyes as wide as the strawberries on the wall. Then, he laughed, but it wasn’t one of those maniacal laughs he gave when talking about hope. It was…gentle. More human. Like he was laughing at a joke she made.
“You truly are a naive person, Chiaki Nanami. Kind…yet naive. It’s honestly cute..”
Chiaki felt her cheeks heat up at his cute comment, but she crossed her arms and gave him a knowing look. “Maybe you’re right. Maybe I am naive. But, I’m able to hold on to hope because I try to be positive. I’m able to solve the class trials because I want to believe in others.” She walked over to him, placing a hand on his arm. “And because I'm “kind yet naive,” I’m able to understand you better.”
With that, Chiaki left to finally get back to investigating the funhouse, leaving Nagito standing there, stunned, with his face burning a bright scarlet red.

*This is a repost of my previous entry because it kinda flopped, and I want to repost it. This is also a chance to say that Day 4 is going to be late. I wasn’t happy with the result of it cause I messed up with the prompt, and school is kicking my ass. So this is a way to say that I did post something. Sorry for the inconvenience!*
The night felt colder than it usually did. Like all the usual warmth of the nights of Jabberwock island have been sucked out of the air, leaving a freezing, hopeless wind instead. That very biting wind howled against the starless sky as Nagito sat outside on the beach, sinking into the sand. He was lucky that he was wearing a jacket because it felt like it was winter instead of a beautiful summer night. Then again…if it were a warm night, it might’ve made things even more difficult for him.
The ocean's water felt cold as ice as it crashed against Nagito's shoes, soaking his feet. Combined with the cold air, the icy water made him shiver. Multiple specks of sand were poured over his long dark green jacket, dirtying it with its grainy substance. However, despite all of the uncomfortable circumstances of the beach, he found it hard to focus on anything. Besides...despair-full trash like him didn't deserve to complain about inconveniences like this.
Instead, Nagito was focusing on an item that rested in between the fingers of his right hand. A small familiar-looking white hair clip. It was shaped like a pixelated spaceship from a video game. What was it called again?
"Galaga!" Her voice rang in his head as he found the answer. "It's from Galaga! It's a fixed shooter arcade game where you're controlling a spaceship and you have to shoot down the Galaga forces while trying to avoid enemies and projectiles. I actually got this hair clip from a competition that I won in middle school. I was up against a lot of adults and guys, and everyone thought that I was going to lose the first round. But, I proved them wrong! I got the highest score and broke a new record. Ever since then, people began to call me the Ultimate Gamer."
Nagito could still remember the way she sounded so excited as she described the game and explained how she earned her Ultimate title to him. Her pale pink eyes seemed to shin with so much nostalgia and joy. So much so that it was almost contagious. He remembered her turning to him, an embarrassed smile on her face as she played with a strand of her hair. "Oh...sorry, Komaeda. I was rambling a bit there. It's just...it's so rare for me to actually talk about this to anyone. It made me a little excited!"
Her giggle, sweet-sounding as little bells, still played in Nagito's head as he stared off into the ocean. He held his knees close to his chest as he stared at the hair clip in his hand. How he longed to hear her gentle voice again.
"Come on, Komaeda. Please come with me to the arcade. I promise it'll be fun." He recalled her hands resting on his desk as she tried to convince him to hang out with her.
"I really couldn't, Nanami. I doubt you'll have fun with lowly scum like me. You should ask one of the other Ultimates If they want to come. I'm sure Mioda or Tsumiki or Soda or even Kuzuryu would be happy to come and play video games with you."
She shook her head stubbornly. "If I wanted to invite them to the arcade, I would've asked them. But, right now, I'm asking you, Komaeda."
"Which, I think, is practically insane of you," he countered, laughing. "I mean, come on, Nanami. They're Ultimates! They're super talented with colorful personalities, and they're truly worthy of becoming Symbols of Hope. Meanwhile...I'm just lucky. I'm not at the same level as them. It's insulting that you want to play with lucky scum like me instead of symbols of hope that are just like you."
Her expression shifted into a small pout as she reached over to the table and grabbed his hand. "Don't say that about yourself! I think being the Ultimate Lucky Student is still a great talent even if you don't think so. Besides, you're still a classmate of ours and you are attending Hope's Peak after all. So...surely, you must be just as amazing as everyone else here. At least, that's what I think."
"But...even in some insane logic that your luck isn't considered a talent," she continued. "That doesn't matter. I know that you're still a great guy, Komaeda, even if everyone else doesn't really agree. And, I want to go to the arcade with you. Not with Soda. Not with Mioda. With you. So...please! Would you come with me?"
She leaned in close to him, still having a hold on his hand. Nagito didn't understand it at the time, but he could feel his cheeks heating up as he stared into those beautiful blossom-pink eyes that now held a rare determined spark. Suddenly, as if realizing how close she was, she leaned back and let go of his hand. Her cheeks were flushed with a pale pink.
"Um...sorry. I didn't realize I was getting so close." She sighed in defeat, finally deciding to give up in her attempts. "Well, I guess if you don't want to go, I won't force you. So...I'll just go now..."
She was about to leave before Nagito grabbed her arm. "Wait!"
As she turned around, she was met with a gentle smile on his face. "I changed my mind. Going to the arcade with you will be my greatest pleasure, Nanami. After all, spending time with the Ultimate Gamer is truly an honor!"
Her cheeks were still a rosy pink as she flashed him her signature gentle smile. "I'm glad."
Nagito could never forget that smile. It was always full of a gentle kindness that was directed to everyone she was able to talk to. It was always beaming with such great hope and joy once she had started opening up to everyone in their class. That smile...she directed it at him with so much affection. Love that made him feel like he was actually worth something. That he was worthy of being called an Ultimate. That he was worthy of her...
It was probably the only recognizable feature of her bloodied corpse...
The memory of Chiaki Nanami is always playing in his mind. Everything about her still haunts him to this day. Her gentle pink eyes. Her bouncy mauve hair. Her kindness. Her tranquility. Her passion for video games. Her awkwardness. Her bluntness. Her aloofness. Everything! Every time he looks at her former hair clip, or remembers a trait of hers, or sees something that reminded him of her...he felt a hot stabbing pain in his heart. Like a knife that was dipped in fire was attempting to push through it, desperate to kill him. It was torture!
Sometimes, Nagito would find himself laying awake at night, being reminded of that day. One of the worst days of his life. Blood would paint his dreams as he remembered the cursed video that he was forced to watch and the bitch who made him watch it.
That day won’t leave his mind as if it was refusing to. The day that the embodiment of despair took away the only person who ever smiled at him. The she-devil herself. The representation of everything he despised. Nagito could never forget the gorgeous yet punchable face of Junko Enoshima. Chiaki Nanami’s murderer.
He felt hot tears filling his eyes as remembered Chiaki’s fate. He…still couldn’t believe it was real. He didn’t want to believe it was real. That Chiaki…the girl who was always kind to everyone. Who always saw the best in people. Who often slept during Ms. Yukizome’s lectures. The girl who stole his heart and made him fall in love with her. He didn’t want to believe that she was really gone.
‘Love….’ He thought back to that word. It felt so…foreign to him. Like he was on a different planet than that concept. Love. When was the last time he was given that? Possibly when his parents were alive, but it was difficult to remember. But, aside from that, he can’t really say that he had ever felt someone truly give him affection or comfort.
Until she arrived. Nagito had always remembered feeling special around her. He supposed it was because she had that effect on people. Even though she could bluntly say the wrong thing at the wrong time, she still treated everyone with compassion. And for some reason, he was never the exception. He still found her kind of weird for not making him an exception.
But, it never bothered him. He had gotten addicted to the affection, comfort, and love that she gave him, even if it was only platonic. Whenever she grabbed his hand, it always felt so gentle and soft against his, and it made him so glad that she actually wanted to touch him. Whenever she hugged him, he felt like nothing could ever hurt him anymore. There was a sense of safety and a comforting aura that she gave whenever he was in her arms. He remembered a time where she fell asleep on his shoulder after staying up the night before gaming. It drove him practically crazy when he felt her head on his shoulder.
It had taken him a while to realize how much he craved her. He craved her touch, her hugs, her warmth. It felt so freeing to realize that he was capable of feeling that way towards another person, and it filled him with so much hope. Of course, he was never intending on revealing those feelings, but, at least, he had someone who felt some sort of affection towards him.
And now…she’s gone. And he’s alone again. The one person who liked him…was pierced by multiple spears that claimed her life. And he couldn’t do anything but watch it all happen. For once, his luck didn’t save him. It couldn’t save her. It didn’t grant him what he wanted. No hope had come out of the despair that filled his eyes. And after that…it was a blur. All he knew was that he was another servant of Junko Enoshima, the twisted murderer who had brainwashed him and his whole class into falling into despair.
He still wanted to throw up every time he was reminded of the disgustingly vile feelings that she implanted into him. He still couldn’t believe that his heart, that was so devoted to hope, would love someone as full of despair as Junko. No, calling those feelings “love”….comparing them with his feelings for Chiaki….was an insult. It deserved to be called a word that was as sinful as those feelings, like obsession. He could never love Junko Enoshima. In fact, he despises her with every miserable part of his body. He still wishes she was alive so he could finally kill her himself!
Nagito took his eyes off the white hair clip in his hand and glared at the robotic hand that replaced the red-clawed hand that he previously had placed on his own arm. At least he finally got red of her awful hand, but the scars were still there. This metal hand that Kazuichi made him was a souvenir of what he had done and of the dead feelings he had towards Junko.
The tears that were swelling in his eyes began to slowly flow down his cheeks as he recalled everything that happened. Even though it was years ago, it still felt like it was only yesterday. “Forgive me, Nanami…please forgive me for giving into despair. Please…”
“Komaeda?” A voice called out from behind him. Nagito gasped as he lifted up his head and turned around. And there she was. Standing right there as if she’d never left. The same short mauve hair, the same gentle pink eyes, the same warm smile. It was her! She was alive! And standing right behind him!
“NANAMI!” He quickly got up and ran towards her, pulling her into an embrace. He shut his eyes tightly as tears fell onto her chest. “I’m so glad that you’re still alive! You’re still here! She didn’t kill you. Nanami, I never-”
“Komaeda…open your eyes…” The voice that interrupted him was different now. The soft voice of Chiaki Nanami had left.
Nagito followed the voice’s instructions and his heart was shattered as soon as he looked up at the heterochromic-eyed face of Hajime Hinata.
“W-what? B-but…she was right there! I saw her! She was…” Nagito’s voice faded away into nothingness as he realized what happened. That his protests were just as useless as his mind.
Hajime couldn’t look Nagito in the face as he snapped him back to reality, a sad expression on his face. “It was just your imagination, Komaeda…”
Nagito was silent for a moment, running a hand through his hair. Then…he let out a small hiccup-like laugh. “I…I really thought that Nanami was standing there. How delusional can I be? There’s…no way she’s alive. I saw her body…I went back to see it. And…”
Images of her corpse erupted in his mind. The multiple deep wounds that were scattered across her body, indicating where the spears had pierced her. The pool of blood that rested below her and painted the floor. Her glassy eyes…no longer having the usual warmth that they had always had.
Nagito fell to his knees, his expression unreadable. “Heh…forgive me, Hinata. I guess my useless mind was attempting to trick me with illusions of what I wanted to see. I apologize. Please, go back to what you were doing beforehand.”
“Actually, I came to check on you,” Hajime said, sitting right besides him. “Koizumi said that she saw you out there in the cold, and I was worried that you were…going to hurt yourself…”
Nagito let out a sour chuckle as he stared out into the ocean. “That’s not a bad idea, actually.” He got on his knees and began to crawl towards the freezing waters. As soon as his hands touched the water, he felt like ice was traveling across his whole body, trying to freeze him to death. “Maybe then…I can die peacefully and repay for everything that I’ve done….”
Hajime grabbed Nagito’s waist and pulled him away from the water. “Komaeda! Don’t do anything reckless! Please…she wouldn’t want you to do this. She wouldn’t want you to take your own life because of her. She…would want you to continue moving forward and try to be happy-”
“How can I do that, Hinata?!” Hajime immediately let go of Nagito the moment that he suddenly raised his voice at him. His eyes were widened as he saw Nagito glaring daggers at him, his usual carefree smile replaced with a desperate and mournful expression.
“You don’t understand how important she was to me! She knew how much of a lowly, talentless, worthless person I was! And yet…s-she still always smiled at me. She always was kind to me and gave me affection. I’ve never felt as strongly about anyone as I did with her! I’ve…never had someone love me like she did…”
Nagito looked down at the hairpin in between his pale fingers, more tears filling his sorrow-filled gray eyes. “And now…she’s gone. Enoshima killed her. And…I still feel like it’s my fault. I shouldn’t have left her side down there. I shouldn’t have let her get killed. It…should’ve been me.”
Hajime placed two comforting hand on his shoulders, moving Nagito’s body to face him. “Komaeda, if you had died instead, she would’ve been heartbroken. She would’ve became a Remnant of Despair in your place. No good would’ve came out of it. Besides…you can’t blame yourself for what what Enoshima….what I…did.”
Nagito looked up at Hajime, who was looking at the sea. That’s right…before Chiaki had died, Hajime had been transformed into Izuru Kamukura. He was assisting Junko when she was carrying out her plan to bring the world to despair. He supposed that Hajime must’ve been feeling just as guilty-no, even more guilty- for Chiaki’s death.
“I don’t know how exactly you’re feeling right now, Komaeda,” Hajime admitted. “I’m not you. I don’t process things the same way you do, so there’s no way for me to know how exactly you’re feeling. But…she was important to me, too.” He smiled slightly. “She gave me her kindness as well. Even though I was just a Reserve Course Student. I…still don’t know why she did…”
Nagito let out a hiccup of laughter. “I’ve always thought that it was because she was just weird like that. I even said that to her once. She was so offended by that and gave me a whole five minutes of silent treatment.”
Hajime chuckled slightly at that, and for a moment, things felt lighthearted for a brief moment. But then, Hajime’s face fell into a saddened expression, tears filling his eyes. “She didn’t deserve to die…”
“Of course she didn’t…” Nagito agreed, looking down at the sand. “It feels like the world always takes the kindest or most hopeful people like her. I wish that my luck could do something about it. Turn back time or something, I dunno. I just…want her back…”
Tears rolled down Hajime’s cheeks. “Me too…”
“Actually…” Nagito held the hair clip up and traced it with his thumb, a sad smile resting on his face. “I never actually got a chance to tell her how I felt about her…I always told myself that I should keep it a secret. That trash like me didn’t deserve to confess my love to her and that she would never feel the same way. And before…I was okay with that. But, now…I regret it…so much. I should've just told her and taken a chance for our relationship to become something more. It’s one of the main things that I would’ve changed.”
For a while, there was nothing but silence. Though, Nagito didn’t mind, or even notice. He just stared at the white hairclip in his hand, reminiscing on his past mistakes. He didn’t mind the silence. It allowed for him to think. He was so focused on his own thoughts that he didn’t even notice the torn expression that Hajime worn.
“Actually, Komaeda…about that…” Hajime finally said, hesitating slightly. Nagito looked up from the hairclip to look at his friend, but he avoided his eyes as he stared up at the night sky. “Before Nanami died, she told me something while we were hanging out. She told me that…she had a crush on you.”
Nagito’s eyes widened as he tried to process what Hajime told him. “...what?”
Hajime nodded. “She felt the same way. She was planning on confessing soon, but…she never got the chance.”
Nagito didn’t know what to think. He didn’t even know how to feel about this. Chiaki shared the same feelings for him…he normally would’ve felt happy about this. But…she was gone. Nothing could ever be done about this.
And knowing that damning fact…finally broke the dam. Nagito buried his head in Hajime’s shoulder and broke down, sobbing heavily. Rivers and rivers of tears flowed down his cheek and soaked Hajime’s shirt. He couldn’t hold it back anymore. He couldn’t say anything. He couldn’t even think. All he could do was cry in his grief, gripping Hajime’s shirt tightly as he sobbed.
Hajime listened to Nagito’s desperate gasps of breath as he cried, surprised at how he took it. It was the first time that he had ever seen Nagito cry before, let alone full-on sob. Instead of saying anything, he took the hair clip that Chiaki always wore out of Nagito’s hand and placed it in his white hair. He then hugged Nagito tightly, joining in his grief as he recalled the memory. Of how Chiaki’s cheeks were a pale pink and her voice seemed sort of dreamy as she talked about her crush on Nagito. She looked so happy…and now…she was gone. Multiple tears dropped onto the sand as both of them wept through the night.

Komanami Week Day 2: First Kiss/Gaming Together
Summary | Nagito and Chiaki are hanging out and playing video games (Mario Party) at Hajime's place. With Chiaki's skills and Nagito's luck, things are getting pretty neck and neck. Well, what methods do they take to try to win when Hajime leaves the room?
❥ Pairing | Nagito Komaeda x Chiaki Nanami (Ft. Hajime Hinata, SHSL Third Wheel)
◆ Warnings | My awful attempt at a kissing scene because I'm very inexperienced with writing them (Don't worry, nothing too spicy)
★ Word Count | 3,643 words
@c0rrupted-mov
*I'm combining the two prompts for day two. Fair warning for the next entries for Komanami week, they're probably going to be either late or a little messy. School is more despairful than even Junko is, and homework may keep me from writing these entries. Regardless, I hope they're still decent! Again, sorry if there are any errors or if anyone is out of character! Also, sorry if this is a little cringy. Now, grab some snacks, and I hope you enjoy!*
"AH!" Nagito gasped when the screen displayed him being in second place. "Amazing, Nanami! Even though I won the last minigame, you're still in first place. Truly expected of a talented gamer like you!"
Chiaki let out a sigh of relief. "That was close. I was worried that you were about to overtake me. Your luck really makes things hard."
"Now you get why I decided to stop playing?" Hajime asked as he sat at a table nearby, looking up from his homework. "I would've been in last place for hours. Plus, Komaeda's luck would have definitely gotten me to strangle him."
"Aw, really?" Nagito smiled. "Now I really wish you kept playing then."
"Implying...?" Hajime turned around to face Nagito, his his face holding a slightly concerned expression.
Nagito shrugged. "Ah, don't immediately assume the worst, Hinata. I was thinking that it would funny to see you acting like a sore loser."
"I'M SORRY, WHAT PART OF ANYTHING I SAID IMPLIED THAT I WAS A SORE LOSER?!"
"The fact that you said that my luck would've gotten you to strangle me," Nagito answered with a gentle smile, like it was obvious. "Surely, someone who isn't a sore loser wouldn't be so angry about losing just because of my luck. So, this clearly shows that you're a sore loser."
That little explanation of his earned him a pillow thrown at his smiling face. "Fuck off, Komaeda," Hajime snapped. "I meant that your lucky ass is annoying as hell to deal with."
Nagito removed the pillow to reveal him trying-and failing- to fight the grin that was creeping onto his face. Small snorts of laughter could be heard as he tried to keep his expression neutral. Hajime crossed his arms.
"Oh, ha ha! You're really funny. You could be a comedian considering how big of a clown you are!"
"I-I'm just-pfft-teasing, Hinata," Nagito let out, still failing at fighting off his laughter.
"Leave him alone, Komaeda," Chiaki said, turning away from the game for a moment to give her boyfriend a scolding look. "If Hinata doesn't want to play, he doesn't have to. Stop teasing him."
Nagito let out another snort of laughter before raising his hands up in defeat. "Alright, alright! I'll leave him alone. I'm sorry, Hinata."
Hajime smiled. "Thank you. Nanami, you're really my lifesaver."
Chiaki turned to him with a blank expression. "I stopped him because I didn't want him to get distracted from the game."
Hajime's jaw dropped. "SERIOUSLY?! Komaeda, stop laughing!"
Nagito was practically laughing his ass off as he wrapped an arm around Chiaki. "Oh my god...Nanami!"
Chiaki nuzzled her head against his shoulder. "What? This game is becoming extremely interesting right now. It's a battle between skill and luck! I need you to be focused so it could be fair for the winner." There was an unusual fire burning behind her blossom eyes as she stared at the screen. Nagito had dealt with this look before since she mainly got this when she's really invested in a video game.
"Oh come on, Nanami! Don't be ridiculous. There's no way that someone as lowly as me could even have a chance to defeat an amazing gamer like you. Besides, you're basically asking me to try and crush your hope. There's no way I would even dream of doing that."
"Don't talk like that," Chiaki said. "I wouldn't be upset if you win, Komaeda. I'm just having fun playing with you. But..."
She turned away from the screen to give him a rare glare. "You'll be crushing my hope by not even trying to win. So, please be quiet and continue playing with me."
"Yes, ma'am!" He quickly replied. This time it was Hajime's turn to stifle his laughter as Nagito immediately turned his attention back to the screen.
He rolled his dice block and moved 10 steps forward...and landed on a dash forward space that made him move another five steps forward and skip a lot of dangerous spaces. Chiaki gritted her teeth as an NPC went next. As much as she loved her boyfriend, she did have to somewhat agree with Hajime. Nagito's luck can be a major factor of who wins in a video game, especially in Mario Party. It really keeps her on her toes, which is actually refreshing.
After a while, Hajime got up and walked towards the kitchen. "Hey, I'm going to go to the bathroom and get us some snacks. My brain hurts from those stupid equations."
"Take your time," Chiaki said before Hajime left. Her eyes didn't shift away from the screen as she rolled her dice block and moved 3 spaces, landing on a VS space. "Another minigame. And it's a 4-player minigame as well. Guess I'm up against your luck again."
Nagito smiled, resting his chin on top of her shoulder. "I'm sure you'll win this one, too."
"Hey, I thought you were going to try to beat me," Chiaki complained. "I want you to have fun instead of letting me win."
He smiled. "Who says I'm not having fun? I enjoy myself whenever we play together, regardless if I'm winning or losing. As long as I'm in your presence, then I'm having a good time."
Chiaki smiled and gave Nagito a peck on the cheek. "Thanks...but seriously, don't make this easy for me. This is probably one of the most challenging games that I've played, and I'm determined to win fairly, with you giving it your all as well!"
He chuckled. It really was rare to see Chiaki get so fired up like this. She was usually so calm and passive. Then again, he supposed that it was expected for a pro gamer like her to act differently when it comes to a heated and passionate game. Honestly, he wasn't complaining. He liked seeing this side of her.
"Alright, I'll do my best for you, Nanami," Nagito said before smiling awkwardly. "Honestly, it's weird to even imagine someone like me to get competitive with you, but, just for now, I'll try not to think about it too much."
His smile then shifted to a smirk. "However, don't get too upset when my luck proves to be superior."
"It's on!" Chiaki's eyes had narrowed slightly as she returned his smug expression with a smile. She pressed the A button on her Joy-Con to get the randomizer to pick the minigame. When it stopped, it landed on a minigame that basically needed them to take turns petting a giant sleeping caterpillar until it wakes up and the player who woke it up loses.
An arrow moved rapidly in between each of the four characters and landed on the second NPC. The screen moved to the caterpillar and the NPC began to rapidly pet it several times before the 5-second timer ran out and it was Chiaki's turn. She waved her Joy-Con gently in the air, carefully watching the caterpillar for any sign of it waking up.
"You're being really careful about this, Nanami," Nagito smiled. "And you're earning a lot of points as well! Amazing!"
Chiaki's turn ended and she sighed in relief as Nagito went next. He wasn't nearly as careful as she was when swinging the Joy-Con around to pet the caterpillar. Despite that, however, it didn't wake up. In fact, it didn't even open an eye or jerk its head.
"Good job," Chiaki said. "It didn't even show any signs of waking up."
Nagito chuckled. "Honestly, it was just my luck."
The two NPCs went up next and earned some more points. Chiaki noticed how the caterpillar was beginning to open an eye more often. She also took note of how it jerked its head away during the second NPC's turn, a small vein popping on its head as it did so.
'It's going to wake up soon,' she realized as she held out her Joy-Con, ready for her turn.
Meanwhile, beside her, Nagito was also noticing the signs of the minigame being over soon. He took a look at the amount of points each player had gotten. Chiaki had six points while he had five. Looks like there was a good chance of her winning this minigame.
'That's great!' Nagito thought. 'She's going to win. As expected from her.'
But...then he thought back to what Chiaki had said earlier.
"I don't want you to take it easy on me..."
He glanced over at Chiaki, who was now waving her controller carefully, taking extra caution when noticing the violent way the caterpillar jerked its head. Her face was scrunched up slightly as she bit her lip, concentrating on the minigame. Nagito felt his heart fluttering as he took in the sight. Then...a mischievous smirk crossed his face as he thought of something. She did want him to win, right? So...what if he made things a little interesting...?
Chiaki waved her controller once more. 'That's enough. It's extremely close to waking up, so I should stop petting it-'
Suddenly, she felt arms wrap around her waist and pull her to the left. She yelped, waving the controller in surprise as she felt Nagito kiss her cheek. She glanced up at the screen to see that the game had taken her waving the controller as a command to pet the caterpillar again. Her heartbeat felt like it almost stopped for a second. But, thankfully, all that happened was the caterpillar opened one of its eyes.
She sighed in relief before turning towards Nagito, who was looking away from her with an innocent expression. "Komaeda, why did you do that?"
"You said for me to not make it easy for you," he shrugged.
"Not like that," she sighed while crossing her arms.
"Oh well, it's not like my plan succeeded anyways," he responded nonchalantly, a smug grin on his face. Chiaki frowned. He really did try to sabotage her by distracting her with a kiss. And he wasn't even feeling guilty about it as he gave her a charming self-satisfied grin. He's lucky that he's pretty.
Chiaki took a deep breath and allowed for a calm smile to cross his face. He wants to play that game, huh? Fine. He just has to know that she plays any game. And wins.
Nagito waved his Joy-Con to pet the caterpillar. This time, however, he was far more careful, keeping a watchful eye on any agitated sign that it made. Chiaki watched patiently as Nagito got three pets in before going through with her little revenge. Just as he was moving his controller back down, she grabbed his face and pulled him towards her. Nagito waved his controller violently in surprise as she quickly brushed her lips against his.
His eyes were as wide as plates when Chiaki let him go with a small smile on his face. What...was that? Did she...just kiss him? Nagito couldn't believe it. Sure, it wasn't really that much of a kiss more so than her just barely touching his lips, but still. They had never kissed on the lips before. They only shared cheek kisses, or hand kisses, or head kisses. Never on the lips. Nagito couldn't even wrap his head around why Chiaki would want to even place her gentle lips on his. His heart was pounding in his chest...
"I won," she said in a soft voice.
"Huh?" Nagito was snapped out of his thoughts as she pointed at the screen. He turned to see his character being chased by the now awakened, and very angry, caterpillar. Chiaki's character was cheering as it was announced as the winner.
“What?” Nagito whipped his head back towards her. “What just happened? Did you…seriously?”
She giggled, and Nagito could hear a playful note in her tone. “Yep. You decided to try to sabotage me with a kiss, so I decided to try to do it to you. How does it feel to lose at your own game, Komaeda?”
Nagito’s jaw dropped. “Chiaki Nanami…you really succeeded in making me lose by using my own trick. I can’t believe it…”
She stuck her tongue out. “Well, you decided to pull that trick with me, but I guess I got lucky and didn’t lose the minigame. So, you can’t really complain about me doing it to you, or else, you’ll be a hypocrite.”
Nagito chuckled. “Oh, I’m not planning on complaining. I know what I did deserved some kind of karma thrown back at me, but I just didn’t expect you to really kiss me back…” He looked down at the cushions of the sofa and touched his lips with his fingers. “And I lost because of it…”
This let out another small laugh from Chiaki as she hugged him. "I'm sorry. I just wanted to one-up you in your own game and get a little revenge. Although...I'm a little surprised. I was expecting your luck to keep you from losing."
Nagito was silent for a moment, staring at the couch with a small frown. Seconds passed and he still didn't respond to her, instead just touching his lips. Was he thinking about something?
"Komaeda...?" She called. "Are you okay?"
As soon as she called his name, Nagito looked up and smiled. "Oh! Forgive me, Nanami! I was just thinking about something. It was about my luck...you remember how it works, right?"
Chiaki nodded. “You said every time something bad happened to you, something good would happen in response to that. It’s kinda like a trade of sorts."
“Exactly! Wasn’t expecting you to remember that. So…to answer why I lost despite my luck, I think it was because, for once, the opposite happened."
Chiaki tilted her head slightly. "What do you mean by that?"
Nagito turned towards her and hummed slightly, but didn't respond. Chiaki could practically see the gears turning in his head as he debated on whether or not to tell her. However, he just shook his head. "Never mind that. Let's continue playing, shall we?"
He reached for his Joy-Con, but Chiaki quickly grabbed his wrist. He turned towards her, raising his eyebrow slightly. "What are you doing, Nanami? Don't you want to keep playing?"
“You’re saying that because you got good luck, you had bad luck in order to balance it out, right?” Chiaki clarified, ignoring his question. “That's what the opposite of your luck means. So, are you saying that me kissing you was the good luck and you losing was the bad luck?”
Nagito was silent for a moment before laughing. “Wow. I should’ve expected you to immediately understand, Nanami. I guess there was no point in me attempting to hide it.”
“But…why didn’t you want to tell me?” she continued to question. “There isn’t any harm in me knowing, so it doesn’t make sense.”
“Uh…” Nagito tried to form a response, but Chiaki quickly interrupted him.
“Is it because you want me to kiss you again?” she asked him. “And you didn’t want me to know that because you felt like you were going to bother me with one of your ‘selfish desires?’” She made finger quotations.
'How did she immediately understand it?!' Nagito tried to keep his expression neutral, but his mind was screaming right now. He opened his mouth to respond, but, instead of saying anything, he quickly shut it and looked away. His pale cheeks were tinted with a rosy pink.
"So, I'm right," Chiaki nodded, understanding what his silence meant. "It's fine if you want me to, Komaeda. That kiss I gave you wasn't really so much of a kiss, so I want to have my proper first kiss with you and be able to enjoy it. So, if you want..."
Nagito continued to remain silent, but now, his heart was pounding as he considered her offer. He looked back to see her waiting for an answer, leaning slightly closer with a small smile.
“I-I couldn’t ask you to grant my selfish desires, Nanami. I don’t deserve that kind of happiness that you being my first kiss would bring, especially after what I pulled-”
"You do deserve it," Chiaki immediately said, brushing his hair out of his face. "Unless, you don't want me to kiss you?"
“I…well, of course I do, but-”
"Then, there's no problem," she said, leaning even closer to his face. Nagito froze up as there was hardly any distance between them left. Her face was inches away from his, and he couldn't believe that she would even want to kiss his disgusting lips. He could feel his heart beating faster and his palms sweating as a battle went on in his head; one side telling him to give in to the temptation and the other telling him that he didn't even deserve to be touching her. He took another look at Chiaki's face, her eyes fluttering shut as she anticipated for him to close the distance between them. He gulped.
And just went for it.
Or tried to. He closed his eyes and tried to remove the distance between them, but felt himself completely missing Chiaki's lips. His nose collided with hers and he felt a throbbing pain form there.
"Ow!" He groaned, holding his nose. How the hell were people able to kiss perfectly with their eyes closed?! Chiaki burst out laughing at Nagito’s failed attempt and cupped his face with her hands.
"Forgive me, Nanami," he apologized. "I've...never done this before."
She shrugged. "Neither have I. But...I think you're supposed to aim for the lips." With that teasing sentence being the last spoken, she closed her eyes and held his face still as she finally closed the distance between them. Nagito felt her lips perfectly pressing against his, hitting their target. He took a sharp breath in as he felt the softness of her lips envelope his in a loving embrace.
He froze for a moment, unsure of what to do. His hands stayed firmly to his side, not knowing where to go or what was okay to touch. All he could do was relish the soft warmness of her lips against his cold, chapped ones. Chiaki, meanwhile, clumsily wrapped her arms around his neck, tangling her fingers through his messy, long white hair. He felt sparks flow down from his neck through his entire body, exciting him and thawing through his hesitation. He could practically hear her heartbeat matching his, and it was more hopeful than anything his luck had ever given him. There was a feeling of comfort and affection being poured into the kiss, and it made Nagito intoxicated on that feeling. Why was he preventing himself from this warmth and love? He knows that he didn’t deserve it, but it still felt so good to have it spread towards him from this kind-hearted gamer.
And he wanted more. He was ready to snake his hands around Chiaki and pull her even closer to him, drunk on the feelings that she was giving him.
“Hey, guys, sorry it took me a while, but-WHAT THE HECK?!”
Nagito and Chiaki quickly separated and turned to see Hajime standing at the edge of the hallway, staring right at them with his jaw dropping. Nagito felt his face heat up an uncomfortably burning red. When did Hajime get in the house?! Was he always here?! Wait, who’s place was this again?
“Well, this is awkward,” Chiaki said blankly, but she felt like an idiot for completely forgetting about the chances of Hajime walking in while they were kissing. She supposed it was because she was so caught up in the moment that she wasn’t thinking clearly. Her cheeks turned red as she looked down at the cushions of the couch. Could she kick herself right now?
Hajime shook his head, rubbing his temple. "Okay, what the fuck did I just walk in on? I know that you two are a couple, and I'm happy about that. But, did you forget that we're hanging out and this is my place? Honestly, the moment I leave the room, you two seriously are making out on my couch-"
“Actually, we weren’t making out,” Chiaki corrected. “We didn’t even use tongue-”
“ONE! I DON’T NEED TO KNOW THE DETAILS, NANAMI! TWO! HOW THE HELL DO YOU KNOW WHAT EXACTLY MAKING OUT IS-YOU KNOW WHAT, NEVER MIND, NOT IMPORTANT!”
Hajime’s face was red as he shook his head violently. "Could you two PLEASE save this crap for when you're not hanging out with me at my place-or with anyone at anyone's place? Seriously, it's really awkward to walk in on you guys."
Nagito grinned slightly. “Well, it’s not our fault that you took forever, Hinata. What were you even taking so long for anyways?”
“Well, I’m sorry that Soda called me, but don’t change the subject! I know that you’re trying to hide your embarrassment from being caught by taking the opportunity to tease me. Listen, I’m not mad, but I would appreciate it if you didn’t do this kind of shit when we’re hanging out together.”
“Why? Are you upset that you’re the third wheel, Hinata? You don’t have someone to do this stuff with, so you’re taking out your jealousy towards me and Nanami,” Nagito teased.
Hajime rolled his eyes and threw a bag of chips at Nagito. “At least, I don’t have to worry about being caught, Komaeda! That’s an advantage of being a third-wheel. WAIT, I DON'T MEAN IT LIKE THAT! I’M NOT A THIRD WHEEL!”
Nagito burst out laughing as the chip bag hit the sofa cushion next to him. “You just admitted it!”
Chiaki giggled as well. "Hinata, are you or are you not a third-wheel? Which is it?"
“Shut up! And stop laughing! You know what, give me a Joy-Con when you’re done with this party. I’m going to kick both of your asses for this.”
“Good luck,” Chiaki giggled. Hajime glared at his two friends for another moment before his face softened into a slight smile. He tossed the other snacks towards them. For the rest of the day, the three continued to play video games and have fun, with some light teasing being thrown here and there.
As she was playing however, Chiaki thought back to the kiss that she and Nagito shared earlier. She giggled, her cheeks turning pink as she thought about how amazing it was and remembering the butterflies in her stomach as they kissed. Despite the awkwardness that came afterwards...she could safely say that her first kiss was perfect.

@c0rrupted-mov
*Sorry for being late and if there any mistakes or errors. I was busy this week, so I didn't get a chance to properly edit this. Also, sorry if anyone is out of character. I'm not used to writing Danganronpa characters yet. Also, this is quite long, so grab some snacks and read if you have a lot of time. With that out of the way, I hope you enjoy!*
“Miss Sonia! I can carry your bag for you if you want!”
“Ah, no thank you, Soda-”
“PLEASE! I INSIST!”
Nagito stared at the scene playing out in front of his desk. Sonia had just walked into the classroom, and Kazuichi was immediately all over her. It was nothing new. This kind of stuff happened every minute of every day, and yet, Kazuichi was never any closer to winning Sonia’s affections. Still, he was just so full of hope that Nagito had to respect his determination. After all, he was truly worthy of being called a Symbol of Hope if he refuses to lose hope.
Nagito rested his cheek onto the palm of his hand and sighed. Unfortunately, he didn’t have Kazuichi’s hope when it comes to romance. As if on cue, the door slid open and Chiaki came in the classroom with her eyes glued to her game console. Immediately, Nagito felt himself straighten up, a familiar feeling flowing into his chest.
BA-DUMP! BA-DUMP! Nagito felt the steady beat of his heart increase exceptionally as Chiaki started making her way to the desk behind him. His face grew hot and he took note of every single detail about her. Her pale mauve hair bouncing slightly as she walked. Her usually gentle pink eyes that were filled with a determined fire at the moment. The small pout that formed on her face as she mashed buttons on her console. It all caused there to be butterflies in Nagito’s stomach.
“Good morning, Nanami!” Nagito exclaimed, attempting to act like his usual self. “Today feels like a beautiful day full of hope! Wouldn’t you agree?”
Chiaki didn’t bother to lift her head up from her game to face him. “….yeah. Morning.” Without another word, she sat at her desk and continued playing her game.
Nagito sighed. “Guess my luck’s not helping with this…” he muttered. While it’s true that Chiaki didn’t talk that much in general, it seemed like, lately, she never said more than a few words when talking to him.
“H-hey, Nanami,” Mikan approached her. “I don’t mean to be bossy, but I would recommend looking up from your game every now and again. I-It’s just that I’ve noticed you hardly put it down, and that might hurt your eyes.”
Chiaki didn’t put the game down. “Don’t worry, Tsumiki. My eyes are pretty used to looking at the screen, so they hardly hurt. But, I’ll try to take care of my eyes if you’re that worried.”
“Ah!” Mikan gasped. “T-thank you for listening to my advice!”
Yep. This confirms Nagito’s suspicions. She talks way more to the others than to him.
Well, of course, Chiaki would want to talk to the other Ultimates instead of scum that only has luck. But, even though he should’ve expected and known it, Nagito couldn’t help the weird feeling in his chest. The suffocating tightness that seemed to squeeze the hope out of him every time he noticed how little Chiaki paid attention to him. It made him just want to pull Chiaki towards him and wrap his arms around her.
No. How dare trash like him even have such indecent thoughts about her. Nagito slammed his head against his desk, sighing.
“KOMAEDA!” Mikan yelped and ran over to him. “Are you okay?!”
Nagito lifted his head up to meet the Ultimate Nurse’s worried eyes. He smiled and dismissed her with a hand gesture. “Don’t worry, Tsumiki. I’m fine. Just…having a moment.”
He glanced behind him to meet pink eyes for a split second before they returned to the game. He frowned. Did she really not care whether or not he was okay? He suddenly felt a small weight pushing down on his chest, like a small boulder that couldn't crush him completely. He groaned. 'I'm not going to let this go, am I? Should've expected that from selfish scum like me.'
“Actually, Tsumiki, I do need your help…” Nagito looked down, his eyes on his desk. “But, I know that worthless trash like me is completely out of line to be asking the Ultimate Nurse for assistance. You’re completely free to refuse.”
“N-no! I'm completely happy to be needed!" Mikan reassured. “Thank you! I w-will do my best!"
Nagito sighed with relief.  “Really? Thank you, Tsumiki. We can talk about it during lunch if you don’t mind.”
“O-of course!” With an excited skip in her step, Mikan went over to her desk with a beaming expression.
The rest of the day went pretty uneventfully. Well, as uneventfully as it can be when you’re in a class full of Ultimate students with energy to kill. But, the “crazy” events went about as normal. Akane challenging Nekomaru, Hiyoko being a bitch to Mikan, Kazuichi being jealous of Gundham and Sonia’s “friendship”, and Ms. Yukizome trying to handle everyone. However, even amongst the normal chaos, Nagito found it oddly difficult to chime into the conversations or even rant about hope. His mind couldn’t stop bringing up Chiaki and he felt himself slumping in his seat more and more throughout the day.
Thankfully, lunchtime finally rolled around and he walked over to Mikan. “Is there anywhere we can speak privately, Tsumiki?” he asked. “I’m sorry for being demanding, but I’d don't want to be overheard.”
‘Especially not by Nanami,’ he thought as he looked over his shoulder to see Chiaki discussing something with Ms. Yukizome.
"D-don't worry about it!" Mikan quickly reassured.  “There’s an empty classroom on the second floor that’s p-pretty empty. N-nobody usually goes there.”
“Sounds great!” Nagito nodded, and with that, the two made their way towards the classroom. “I’m really grateful for your help, Tsumiki. I was struggling with this for a while now, and you asking if I was okay persuaded me to finally find the hope I needed in order to confront this problem. So, thank you.”
“There’s n-no need to thank me, Komaeda! I was j-just nervous about your health!”
“As expected from the Ultimate Nurse!” Nagito smiled as they approached the classroom door. He slid the door open casually and walked inside, Mikan following right behind him and closing the door.
“Um…so, what do you need h-help with, Komaeda?” she asked. “Is there something bothering you?”
“There is, actually…” Nagito crossed his arms. “Lately, I’ve been feeling weird…around Nanami.”
Mikan tilted her head. “Weird? Around Nanami? How?”
“Well, before, I saw Nanami the same as everyone else. She’s another Symbol of Hope like the rest of you Ultimates, and I admired her and her kindness. I would’ve loved to be considered as her friend, but…I know that’s too much for scum like me to even ask. But, regardless, I just saw her as a great person who always, strangely, was always nice to me. But lately…things have been changing…”
“I’ve been seeing her in a different light lately. I’m beginning to find myself paying attention to every single detail about her. Like, every time Nanami’s awoken from one of her naps, she usually rubs her eyes and gives the person who wakes her up this cute angry expression.” Nagito felt his cheeks flush and his heart doing a happy little dance as the image flashed in his mind. “And…it makes my heart skip a beat. Honestly, so does everything else about her. The way she talks. The way she walks. Her small habits. Her flaws. Things that I’ve seen multiple times before and didn’t care about would now drive me crazy. Every time I’m near her, I find myself being even more happy and blushing. It’s honestly a little scary-”
“Komaeda! I think you’re in l-love with Nanami!” Mikan interrupted in an outburst. Nagito stopped speaking and looked up at her with a blank expression. He had been so caught up in his rambling that he had almost forgotten that she was in the room with him. He didn’t say anything as he took in what she just said.
Mikan began to tear up slightly. “AH! I-I’m sorry! Please forgive me for being so rude and interrupting you like that! I will take the p-punishment. J-just-”
"I know."
“Huh?” Mikan stopped apologizing to be met with a smile from Nagito. But…this smile was different from all the other smiles she’d seen. Nagito’s smiles were usually polite, small, and full of genuine appreciation. He never was the type to grin, and his smiles were usually as calm as he was. But, the smile he held…it was bigger than all the other smiles that crossed his face. It wasn’t a grin per say, but it still was a lot less gentle than his usual ones. His pale cheeks were flushed a bright red and his eyes held a soft, dreamy expression as he looked at the ground. Mikan wouldn’t be surprised if hearts formed in his eyes because the smile that Nagito had right now could best be described as…love-struck.
“I know that I’m in love with Nanami. I lay awake at night even more now because of it. Honestly, my luck can be so cruel sometimes. Of course my love for you Ultimates couldn’t stay in the admiring sense like I wanted it to be. I had to take advantage of that love to develop indecent feelings for Nanami. How selfish can I get?”
“Komaeda, calm down!” Mikan waved her arms in a panic. “Y-you can’t control how you feel.”
“But, even so,” Nagito ignored her as he looked up at the ceiling. “Nanami wants nothing to do with scum like me. It’s clear that she can’t even stand talking to me. She only says at most a few words whenever she does. Meanwhile, she says far more whenever she talks to the rest of you. We hardly spend any time together anymore. Not as much as we used to. She despises me and I don’t blame her. Who would ever want to spend time with trash? I just wish my heart could understand that.”
Nagito sighed as he turned to Mikan, his expression softening back to his normal tranquility. “That’s why I wanted to talk to you, Tsumiki. I need some advice about this. How can I stop myself from feeling this way? I don’t want to be jealous of you or anyone else when she pays attention to you. It’s completely outrageous of me to be jealous of you Ultimates just because I’m selfish enough to prevent Nanami from being happy.”
“Um…” Mikan had no idea what to even say to that. “I, uhhh…don’t know about stopping your feelings. B-But, I think I have an idea of helping you cope with them. M-maybe you should try talking to Nanami about this?”
“Huh?” Nagito furrowed his brow. “Talk to Nanami…? How would that help?”
“W-well…maybe it would help if you knew why she’s not talking that much with you. I don’t think she actually hates you, Komaeda. She may have something going on or other reasons for not talking to you. S-so, maybe knowing those reasons could help. Also, I know I have no right to say this, but…m-maybe you should confess to her?”
“Someone as lowly as me? Confess to Nanami?” Nagito stepped back. “That’s insane for you to even suggest, Tsumiki! I can’t just tell someone as amazing as Nanami about my selfish feelings towards her. She’ll reject me anyway.”
"Y-you don't know that!" Mikan balled her hands into fists in front of her. "I know it's hard for you to believe, but there is a possibility of her liking you back, too. You don't know what she thinks or what's going on in her head. B-But, I'm sure that she isn't unhappy when she spends time with you! You just think that way! B-besides, aren't you the one who always advocates for hope? Isn't it hypocritical of you to say that and then be so sure that you're going to get rejected?"
Mikan took a step forward and gave Nagito a determined glare as she pointed a finger at him. "So, go on! Confess to Nanami! H-hold on to hope!"
Nagito didn't say anything. He just stared at the finger that was pointed directly at his face with slightly widened eyes. But, this time, he was rendered speechless.
Mikan's expression softened slightly as she looked at the finger she was pointing, almost like she was noticing it for the first time. The realization of what she just did began to sink in, and she screamed.
“I-I-I’m sorry! I’m sorry for being so…tactless! I’ll take any kind of punishment! Y-you could draw on my arms if you wish-”
“No, no,” Nagito shook his head. “There’s no need to be sorry. I was just surprised at your sudden boldness, Tsumiki. I’ve never seen anything like it before.”
“P-please forgive me!”
Nagito chuckled. “I never said I had a problem with it. It’s actually quite refreshing to be scolded by you.” He paused for a second before nodding. “In fact, out of respect for you and your boost of confidence, I’ll talk to Nanami.”
“Huh?” Mikan gasped. “R-really?”
“Yep! I doubt that she’ll feel the same, but surely, with my luck, it won’t end too horribly. Besides, you’re probably right. Maybe figuring out why she doesn’t talk to me anymore will help.” He smiled at her. “Thank you, Tsumiki.”
“Of course, Komaeda!” Mikan bowed before smiling. “A-anything to help a friend.”
“A friend?” Nagito’s eyes widened slightly as he stared at Mikan.
Mikan’s eyes widened and she immediately began to backtrack, freaking out. “ I’m sorry! I d-didn’t mean to assume that you even wanted to be my f-friend in the first place.”
Then, Nagito did something that surprised Mikan. He smiled at her. “I’m glad an Ultimate like you actually considers me as a friend, Tsumiki. It’s an honor.”
Mikan’s teary eyes were as wide as dinner plates before she giggled. “Thanks!”
With that friendly end to the conversation, Mikan and Nagito returned to class a few minutes later and immediately were pestered by Teruteru and Kazuichi asking what they’ve been doing. After denying that they were doing anything suspicious, Nagito glanced over to where Chiaki was sitting. She had her eyes out her console-for once-and a small frown on her face as she stared at Nagito and Mikan.
He walked by Teruteru, ignoring his perverted theories, and went over to Chiaki’s desk. She seemed to realize that he caught her staring because she immediately darted her eyes away and back to her game, her cheeks slightly pink. Nagito had to fight back the urge to laugh at the adorable action and stood next to her desk.
“Hey Nanami, can I ask you something?”
Chiaki kept her eyes glued to her game, silent for a moment before answering. “Go ahead.”
“W-well…” Nagito heard a slight crack in his voice as he formed his question. He could feel his heartbeat grow faster and faster as each second passed. He tried to mentally tell himself to calm down as he took in a breath and let the question out.
“Is it alright if I talk to you after school? Near the fountain? There’s something that I want to tell you.”
Nagito’s tone was a lot calmer than he was feeling right. He can thank his luck for that. Chiaki didn’t answer for a moment, but her fingers had stopped pressing the buttons on her console. Seconds felt like minutes as Nagito waited for an answer before finally, she spoke.
“Sure…”
He smiled. “Great! I’ll see you after class then!”
He walked back to his desk, letting out a sigh of relief. He looked up to see Mikan giving him an encouraging smile that he quickly returned. So far, things were going well. He just has to hope that it’ll go the same way when he actually confesses.
Meanwhile, behind him, he didn’t notice that Chiaki had placed her console down and was staring at him. She felt her cheeks flush as she played with the sleeve on her blazer, thinking back to his question.
‘What…does he want to ask me? Did he notice….?’
When lunch ended and class started again, it felt like time was going six miles an hour. Nagito kept staring at the clock every five minutes, hoping for a slight change in time. In the meanwhile, he could feel his stomach doing backflips as he tried to distract himself by his classmates’ usual antics. But, eventually, the bell finally rang and everyone left the classroom after saying bye to Ms. Yukizome.
Nagito immediately made his way towards the fountain, his heart pounding rapidly in his chest. For a rare moment in his life, he could feel his palms getting sweaty and his body trembling as he finally approached the stone fountain. The waters flowed gently down to the bottom basin of the fountain, like smooth, tranquil, waterfalls that surrounded the space in between the basins. He knew that Chiaki often spent her time after school hanging out with a friend playing video games, so this place was most likely a comfort to her. And he could definitely understand why.
He sighed as he approached the fountain and placed his hand under the falling stream. The water felt cool against his warm hand and he felt the tension in his muscles fading slightly as the water soothed him. He took a deep breath and looked up to see a familiar plum-haired face peeking out of the bushes. Mikan gave him a weak smile and a trembling thumbs up. He smiled at her. At least he had some moral support with him as he went through this.
“So…why did you want to meet me?” a quiet voice asked from behind him. Nagito jumped slightly and turned around to see Chiaki standing there, looking at him with curious expression.
“Oh! Nanami! I didn’t expect you to come so quickly.”
She shrugged, eyes avoiding his. “Well…if it’s important then I figured I should be here as fast as possible.”
“R-right.” Once again, the crack in Nagito’s voice returned as he searched for the words to say. This was…surprisingly difficult. He had never done something like this before. Normally, he just tried to avoid this kind of stuff. But…he was here now…and Chiaki was standing right in front of him. So…he has to do it!
“I don't want to poke my nose in your business, Nanami, but...something's been bothering me lately."
“What is it?” Chiaki asked, raising an eyebrow.
Nagito gulped, taking a minute to collect himself before blurting his question out. “Why aren't you talking that much to me?”
Her eyes widened slightly. “Huh?”
"I'm sorry for having the nerve to even ask this, but...lately, I've noticed that you hardly talk to me anymore. Back at the beginning of the year, you would usually have full conversations with me. But now, you barely say more than a few words to me. Actually, this is probably the most we've talked in a while. It's making me wonder if...you hate me or something."
Nagito looked at the ground, avoiding her eyes. “I know that I shouldn’t be complaining about this. After all, I know my place. But…I can’t stop thinking about it. I miss spending time and talking with you about video games or our days or whatever. I know I’ve done something to make you treat me this way, but I don't know what!"
Chiaki didn't say anything. She just looked down and kept her eyes focused on her shoes. Nagito couldn't read her expression because of the hair that was making a shadow over her face. Regardless, he took her silence as a sign to continue.
"I know that I'm asking for a lot, Nanami. But, I need to know what I did to make you hate me. I promise I'll leave you alone after you answer. After all, this is probably the most out of line thing that I ever had the balls to do. Talking to you like I'm on the same level?" He let out a sour chuckle. "How arrogant-"
"You've got it all wrong" was the small response that came from Chiaki's lips. Nagito stopped his rambling for a minute to look down at the girl in front of him. She had raised her head up slightly, allowing him to see the small flush of pink on her cheeks and her eyes darting to the side. Like she was trying to avoid looking at him?
"I don't hate you, Komaeda. I don't know how you jumped to that conclusion so quickly." She looked up at him and quickly continued, not even giving him a chance to respond. "Wait...never mind. I shouldn't have asked. But, that's not the point. I'm sorry that you got the impression I hated you. Actually...I should be apologizing for the way I've been acting..."
"You? Apologize?" Nagito questioned.
"For not talking to you anymore," she clarified. "I didn't want or intend to distance myself from you. It's just that..." Chiaki hesitated for a moment before sighing. "Well, I guess it's time I told you."
She took a deep breath and reached for Nagito's hand before grabbing it. He felt his cheeks heating up the moment he felt them make contact. His heart fluttered slightly as he looked down at her holding his hand. It...felt comforting. Her hand felt like it fitted perfectly in his and it felt...so right.
"The reason I wasn't talking to wasn't because I hated you or was avoiding you," Chiaki explained. "It was because I was always nervous when talking to you."
"Huh? Nervous? Why would you be nervous talking to me?"
Chiaki took a moment to answer, placing a finger on her chin as she searched for the right words, like a computer searching for answers. "I wasn't sure for a while. All I knew was that whenever I talked to you, I would feel weird. My heart would beat faster every time I was near you, and I would blush every time you got close to me. I found myself staring at you more often and getting flustered every time you complimented me. I was always nervous about how you would react to things I did or say. Yet, despite everything, I found myself smiling every time I was with you. I would enjoy the time we would spent together, and I would always be excited whenever I saw you. I could've been having a really bad day, but then you talk to me about a video game, and everything felt ten times better. It was like...I couldn't be logical or think clearly whenever I was with you, and it caught me off guard. It was so confusing."
Nagito's face was as red as Mahiru's hair as he took in what Chiaki was saying. All of the things that she was describing...no! There was no way, right? He may have amazing luck, but there was no way that he was THIS lucky!
"Then...I finally realized," Chiaki smiled softly, blushing. She looked up to meet Nagito's eyes. "I like you in a romantic sense, Komaeda. I was trying to figure out how to deal with it all and tell you, and that's why I stopped talking to you. It sounds dumb and I'm sorry, but I felt I needed a little bit of time to clear my head a little. And even now, I still feel nervous and all tingly." She let out a small giggle, which sounded like music to Nagito's ears.
"Y-you...like me?" That was all Nagito could sputter out.
"That's what I said," she nodded. "Actually, I was worried when you slammed your head on your desk this morning, but I turned away before you could catch me looking...which was dumb of me."
This was a dream, right? There was no way that this was real. There was no way that Chiaki Nanami actually returned his feelings. No way a girl like her would have a crush on a guy like him.
Chiaki's expression saddened slightly as seconds passed without him saying anything. She let go of his hand. "I understand if you don't feel the same way, and I'm okay with that. I'm happy to just be your friend if that's what you want. I just wanted to get this off my chest."
She was about to turn around before Nagito grabbed both of her hands. "W-wait, Nanami!"
"Huh?"
He couldn't do it. He couldn't just stay in his place and push aside both his and Chiaki's feelings for the sake of hope. Was it wrong? Was it selfish? Was he out of line for preventing Chiaki from being with someone on her level?
He looked directly at Chiaki's face. Her pale eyes were staring up at him and her mouth was slightly open as she waited for his answer. There was a small spark in her eyes. An excited light that was dancing in them, tempting him. Reassuring him. Telling him to do it.
Nagito took Chiaki's hands in his. Even if it was selfish of him, he no longer cared.
"I feel the same way," he confessed. "I like you, too, Nanami."
The smile on her face could’ve countered any type of despair that was out there. Nagito felt her petite frame press up against him as she wrapped her arms around him. “I’m glad…”
He didn’t do anything for a moment. He just looked down at the girl as she lifted her head up towards him, his cheeks red. Then he returned her hug, and he felt everything else around him fade away into a peaceful silence. Nothing else mattered, or even existed for a few minutes. His inferior status. Despair. His awful luck cycle. It was all gone. All that mattered during that moment was the feeling of safety and comfort he got from having Chiaki in his arms. It was bliss. Until...
"Also, if we're going to be a couple, please work on your inferiority complex," Chiaki bluntly said. "You're just as important as everyone else. You're on the same level as me, and I'm not going to tolerate with you thinking otherwise."
"Uh..." All Nagito could do was stare at Chiaki with his jaw hanging. Okay, he wasn't expecting this....wait a moment...
"COUPLE?!" He yelled. "Y-you want to be a couple?"
Chiaki tilted her head. "That's what happens after a confession, right? The two people become a couple at the end. At least...that's how it works in dating simulators."
"I'm not opposed to the idea, but you're moving too quickly," Nagito said. "Besides, do you really want trash like me to be your boyfriend-"
"Yes, I do," Chiaki let go of him and placed her hands on her hips. "You're not trash and I do want you as my boyfriend. That's my choice!"
'When did she get so assertive?!' Nagito wondered as he stared with his eyes widened. 'It's kind of hot...WAIT! Don't think like that, Nagito!'
"And if you're worried about us moving too fast," Chiaki continued, thankfully snapping Nagito out of his embarrassing thoughts. "Why don't we play video games at my place this Saturday? We could go to a cafe beforehand if you want."
He smiled and nodded. "I'm completely fine with whatever you decide, Nanami."
She nodded. "Then it's settled. Our first date will be this Saturday." She glanced over at the horizon to see the sun setting below the trees that rested near the fountain. "It's getting late. We should really be heading home now. I'll see you tomorrow, Komaeda."
With that, Chiaki turned around to make her way to the gate, but she only took one step before suddenly stopping. And suddenly, before he could even realize, Nagito felt a soft pair of lips resting on his cheek.
He gasped and stared down at Nanami, who gave him a shy smile with rosy cheeks. All Nagito could do was brush his pale fingers against his cheek, the exact spot where Chiaki Nanami kissed him.
There was nothing but silence. Nagito just stared ahead at her with his hand on his cheek as he tried to wrap his head around what just happened. Chiaki must've felt awkward because she turned around and began walking away. "Good night, Komaeda!"
Nagito didn't respond. He just stood there, dumbfounded, as he watched Chiaki walk away. After a few moments, he felt his knees give out and him dropping to the ground. He didn't even realize that his knees were trembling when Chiaki kissed him.
“KOMAEDA!” Mikan ran towards him. “A-ARE YOU OKAY?! I’M HAPPY THINGS WENT WELL, BUT-OH GOD! YOUR FACE IS HEATING UP!”
Nagito just stayed there with a love-struck grin on his face. “I really am the luckiest guy ever…”

As a former shiny hunter, I would’ve strangled Nagito because what the actual fuck-
Komeada: oh gosh Chiaki I found a shiny pokemon, I've never seen one with this coloration
Chiaki staring at Komeada's entire team of shinies and then at the non-shiny pokemon he found: Ah, so this is what despair feels like

Ideas for a Danganronpa V3 Double Protagonist Game AU!
(So, I'm kind of salty about Kaede's death. I know it had kind of an important role in the story, but it still sucked to have our first female protagonist (aside from Komaru and Toko, but considering their game isn't like Trigger Happy Havoc or Goodbye Despair, I'm not counting them) be killed in the first chapter. Now, don't get me wrong. I adore Shuichi with all my heart and he's probably my second favorite protagonist. But, I feel Kaede was cheated out of being the protagonist. So, I was inspired by a Youtube comment to write some ideas double protagonist AU! I hope you enjoy)
So, to start off, in Chapter 1, Kaede will still be the only protagonist and the game goes by the same it does in canon for the most part
However, Rantaro will not be Chapter 1's first victim. I feel he died too quick, and while I would want him to die eventually, I feel he should've lived longer
Shuichi would also not find the secret door in the library until much later in the game. This is mainly to allow another opportunity for a kill to happen by someone other than Kaede.
He would still suspect there being a mastermind (probably because of some other evidence he found) and tell Kaede, which would lead to her trying to kill someone.
Obviously, in order for her to continue being the protagonist, her plan will fail without her knowing until the trial.
There's a new Chapter 1 victim and killer, but I haven't thought about who it would be
Anyways, the trial goes the same with Kaede believing she's the culprit and trying to convince Shuichi that she is and to vote for her
Shuichi is forced to believe she's the culprit as well due to all the evidence pointing towards her and nothing contradicting her claims
They're about to vote for Kaede, but Rantaro stops them and provides evidence that only he knew about that proves Kaede's innocence
For the rest of the trial, you play as Shuichi as he tries to use the evidence that Rantaro provided to find the truth and prove Kaede's innocence
In the end, the real culprit is executed and both Kaede and Shuichi are feeling incredibly guilty over what happened
Kaede feels guilty because she was basically the reason why the trial happened. She nearly killed someone innocent because of her stubborn determination to find the mastermind
Meanwhile, Shuichi feels guilty because he almost caused everyone aside from the culprit to die and was basically the reason that Kaede tried to kill the mastermind. And even then, he also was the one that exposed the culprit in the end, leading to their execution
After the first class trial, the player will unlock the ability to switch between protagonists
Now for some gameplay mechanics and how things work if you're playing this game!
OUTSIDE CLASS TRIALS
Throughout the game, you're able to change who you're playing as whether it be Kaede or Shuichi
The cutscenes are pretty much the same no matter what protagonist you're playing as
When you're doing free-time events, you only have to do the event as one protagonist to update the report card and get skills; for example, if you do Kirumi's first free-time event as Kaede then you're able to fill Kirumi's report card and get her skill if you continue playing as Kaede without Shuichi needing to talk to Kirumi
However, there are different free-time events for each protagonist and if one protagonist has already done the second free-time event, the other protagonist will still be on the first free-time event if they haven't done any with the person; for example, if Shuichi is on Kaito's second free-time event and Kaede hasn't talked to Kaito, she would still be on his first free-time event
Shuichi and Kaede also have their own free-time events for the other to experience
There are also some different conversations and cutscenes depending on who you're playing as
During certain game cutscenes and plot points, the game will force you to be a certain protagonist in order for the story to continue; an example is the game sending Kaede to bed and you continuing on as Shuichi whenever he's about to train with Kaito and Maki to move the story
Kaede and Shuichi won't be together 24/7 and will have their own friend groups or go around doing their own thing
When they are on their own, there will be moments where the game won't allow you to check out stuff as a certain protagonist and force you to wait to switch to the other; an example being the player not being able to gain access to an Ultimate's research lab as Shuichi and needing to switch to Kaede to do so
Love Suite events will be the same for both, but Shuichi now has an event, too
CLASS TRIALS
Kaede and Shuichi will have different influence bars for class trials; if Shuichi loses a heart, Kaede will still have all her hearts if you switch to her
If even one protagonist loses their hearts, the game will end and the protagonist you're currently playing as gets executed. The player will have to switch in between protagonists to prevent them from losing all their hearts
They have different truth bullets of two or three; the player will have to switch in between them to get the right bullet
The player is able to see the bullets that the protagonist you're not playing as have with them on the other side of screen as they do the Non-stop Debate
Now, there will be certain mini games that only one protagonist could play, which is why you need both of them in the trial
Both Kaede and Shuichi can do Lying/Perjury, Debate Scrum, and Hangman's Gambit
It should be noted that during Debate Scrum, Kaede and Shuichi will not always be on the same side. The player will be forced to switch to the protagonist that's on the right side of the debate if they are on different sides
Shuichi's the only one who can do Psyche Taxi and Mind Mine due to his experienced detective skills and intelligence
Kaede's the only one who can do Argument Armament and Mass Panic Debate due to her excellent hearing and sense of beat
As for the Closing Argument, they both do it together. As they're explaining everything that happens, they bounce off each other's sentences
One will talk and then the other will continue their train of thought
Once they are done with the explanation, both Kaede and Shuichi will be seen exposing the murderer for their crime
It'll go something like this each time (I'll be using Tsumugi as an example):
Shuichi: I'm sorry, but all the evidence reveals that you're the one who committed this crime...
Kaede: Do you have anything you want to say, Tsumugi Shirogane, the Ultimate Cosplayer?!
(And with that, the trial ends and so do my headcanons for this AU so far! I hope you liked them!)

This is a mood. Literally, I would be excited to see my OTP kiss in a show I’m watching, but when it comes to seeing people making out in the hallway, I’m like…
“EW! GROSS! GET A FUCKING ROOM! IT’S COVID TIME PEOPLE! STAY SIX FEET AWAY!”
Aegoromantic shipfic writer culture is being terrified at the prospect of an irl finding and reading your fanfics and thinking you might experience any of what you write about, because ew, no. It’s cute for fictional characters, but gross for me.

How Nagito, Chiaki, and Hajime first became friends:
(So, I had too many headcanons to put in one post, so I separated them. These are headcanons of how Chiaki, Nagito, and Hajime became friends in this Non-Despair AU! Think of this as a part 2)
So, it's pretty clear that Chiaki is a pretty lonely person that didn't have any friends before entering Hope's Peak
Due to her socially awkward and slightly aloof personality, she struggled with communicating with her other classmates and often just hung out at the back of the classroom
This grabbed Nagito's attention since she usually seems quite lonely for an Ultimate and not much like the symbol of hope he was really expecting
He approached her and began to strike conversation, and this excited Chiaki since she thought that he was a possible friend
The two begin talking and began to form a small friendship
Later that day, Chiaki meets and befriends Hajime the same way she did in the anime (Bumping into and talking about video games with him)
Pleased with making two new friends, Chiaki immediately introduced them to each other, but they didn't like each other that much
Nagito thought Hajime was just sucking up to the Ultimates, which irritated Hajime. Hajime, meanwhile, was creeped out by Nagito's "hopegasms" as he calls it
After this failed first meeting, Chiaki was sad that her first friends didn't get along with each other, but she had hope
Nagito had mentioned that he had a small curiosity about Hajime, and this convinced Chiaki that there was a chance for them to be friends
So, in order to hold on to that hope, Chiaki invites both boys to video game sessions and to hang out whenever she has a chance
Both are reluctant to do so, but Hajime just wanted to make Chiaki happy and Nagito wanted to see the extent of her hope. So, they sucked it up however they made it clear they didn't like it.
My god, getting these two motherfuckers to become friends was one of Chiaki's biggest pains in the ass to date
But, the two finally warm up to each other after Nagito opens up a bit about his luck and how Hajime expresses a desire to understand him better and opens up a bit about his insecurities as a regular person
Chiaki also opened up about her insecurities of feeling like an outcast due to her difficulties with communicating and making friends
A little while after that, the three formed their little friendship trio and hung out a lot whenever they had a chance
Chiaki would give herself the credit for finally getting Hajime and Nagito to become friends, but Hajime immediately shuts her down by telling her that she was just extremely lucky
Probably not going to be the last of these three because of how much I adore them, but at least I got this part 2 out there! Hope you enjoyed the headcanons!
