tumblr tuesday: animal allies
Here are the animals that live in your homes and have declared themselves allies. Give it up for Yuki, Toby, Mick, Rigel, Io, and Zendaya. Hear Yuki and obey. Yuki lives on a bird blog for birds, but we assume nice humans are allowed:
Tumblr media
This is Toby. Toby is a cat. He lives with his human artist and supports lesbians:
Tumblr media
Mick the Dick is a retired rat. We don’t know how he got his name but do not be fooled. Although retired, Mick is in fact still a rat:
Tumblr media
These proud little piggies are called Rigel and Io. Rigel and Io have two mums, and they are pretty stoked about that:
Tumblr media
Zendaya the cat knows that love is love. Her human likes MCU and writing fanfic. And Zendaya, we presume.

Biyaya ng Lupa (Blessings of the Land)
Tumblr media
A film by Manuel Silos
A young married couple, Maria and Jose (Rosa Rosal and Tony Santos) start life together creating a lanzones orchard in the countryside. They have four children - Miguel (Leroy Salvador), Arturo (Carlos Padilla Jr), Angelita (Marita Zobel), and Lito (Danilo Jurado). The eldest, Miguel, is a deaf-mute. Life is good to them and the children grow up and bring joy to the community. But trouble enters their lives when Jose makes an enemy of Bruno (Joseph de Cordova). Bruno, a widower, is much feared in the village, for it is rumored that he caused the death of his wife. And yet he wants to remarry and is courting Choleng (Mila Ocampo), Jose's niece. But Choleng avoids Bruno and one day, in trying to get away from him, she slips and falls off a cliff and dies. The village is outraged and Bruno hides in the mountains. There, he plots his revenge on the village, particularly on Jose's family.

Biyaya ng Lupa (1959) is a film about family and their life struggles in the province. I am not a big fan of classic black and white films as I tend to get bored easily. But, upon watching some classic old films from Hollywood, I became more appreciative of black and white films especially since it took a lot of blood, sweat and tears to produce one. Considering the equipment used during the 1950's and the editing process, it must be hard to cut and paste film strips together to create transition. Thinking about it, this film probably had the same amount of effort and process.
At first it felt kind of boring to watch since for me it took too long to introduce the conflict of the story but it got interesting as it goes when they finally introduced Bruno, the main antagonist in the film. It's a typical plot for a Filipino film about family. There's the father who's strong and is always there to defend his family, the mother who's caring and supports her husband and children, and their children in which has their own unique attributes. Miguel who has a disability and his duo Lito who helps him pursue Gloria, then there's Arturo who wishes to experience the luxurious life in Manila only to regret about it thereafter, and Angelita which truly defines a 'dalagang pilipina' character. The film told the story of each character well, so the audience will really get to know each persona.
As I watch the film it made me realize the power that 'chismis' holds. A single gossip can lead to another person's demise. The fact that someone can twist truth and pass it on to another person who would also twist the truth made me question that what if what we learn in school about history aren't really the truth, because the stories have been passed on and who knows who twisted the story and who knows what the truth really is. Aside from that, the film also made me think about the hardships they must've encounter in the province.
Since the film was produced in the 1950's and it showed the provincial life of a family, it is worth to ponder what must have been like to live in that era.
I like that the film showcased what a family must be especially for us Filipinos who in our tradition, it is typical that we value family first, supporting them and helping them as much as we can. I like that it also showed what a community will be if they work together as one. It goes to show that a community working together as one can be very powerful and fearsome if they fight about the same thing.
Compared to Filipino films produced nowadays, I saw a big change not only on the technical aspect but also in the storyline. Usually, mainstream media produces story concepts about love and relationships because it is easy to cater a romantic/drama film to the audience as it doesn't need that much budget compared to action films.
I recommend that people watch this film and classic black and white films like this especially classic Filipino films as they could learn about the life during those era and they could gather new knowledge too. I didn't know that it takes so long to grow a Lanzones tree until I watched the film. The film also tells you a lesson, about how bending a story accusing someone is dangerous, being blinded by the riches and luxury of someone, and that gossips and rumors isn't a basis to accuse someone of something, it is better to hear their side first and be open minded about it.
Overall, it was a fun experience watching this film as I gathered a lot of lessons and realized a lot of things. I truly appreciate classic old films as it also shows how technology and film has evolved through time and it is very interesting to know the difference of film back then and film now.

Hintayan ng Langit (Heaven's Waiting)
Tumblr media
A film written by Juan Miguel Severo and directed by Dan Villegas
Lisang is two years late. After dying from a complication of diabetes in her 60's, Lisang has overstayed in her waiting room in purgatory, occasionally causing other souls trouble for her own entertainment. But today her waiting ends. Today, she is finally set to crossover and her room is to be leased to a new tenant: Manolo, her newly deceased ex-boyfriend.
Tumblr media
As a person who enjoys watching love stories with a tragic sequence, even though I know for sure that I will be sulking in my own puddle of tears right after, I'll never deny that Hintayan ng Langit (2018) has brought me the same emotions when I watched it the first time and it will always bring me back to that feeling even though I've watched it for several times. The film itself is very heartwarming with a hint of comedy.
The plot revolves around Lisang (Gina Pereño) and Manolo (Eddie Garcia) who were assigned in the same room together in the purgatory or a place where the souls of the dead of those who sinned and had regrets in life atone their sins or guilt before going to heaven. The mere fact that these veteran actors are the lead actors of the film makes it worth the while to watch. The actors executed their characters well which truly deserves recognition.
In addition to that, Juan Miguel Severo is also the person responsible for the screenplay of the film which made it more interesting to watch because I have loved his works ever since his spoken poetry days. I got to admit that the film's brilliant throw of lines captivated me into watching it several times considering that Juan Miguel Severo wrote it. A line that stuck with me the most is when Lisang called her husband from heaven and told him "Alam mo ba kung bakit sigurado akong mahal kita? Dahil araw araw kitang pinili", because it tells a deep thought about love and relationships that even though Lisang loved Manolo exceedingly, she chose her husband 'til death do they part.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Not only that, but the production design of the film makes it more fascinating. I've always appreciated the set design of various films because not only will the audience be occupied to watch the actors in the film but they will also lay their eyes on the actors' surroundings hence the term called Mise-en-scène which means 'placing on stage'. It is a term where every aspect of a film is seen in one frame. I got mesmerized by the production design because the things that were used looked vintage but fancy, thus when I was watching it, it felt like I traveled through time and traveled to another world. It made me wonder if a purgatory really looks like what was in the film because if it was then I'd rather stay there. Jokes aside, it also made me wonder how much did the production cost to execute such an amazing film production wise.
Looking at the film's cinematography, they captured the essence of the genre romantic slice-of-life drama. The overall color tone of the film is warm and pleasing to the eyes. The editing was also great although to be frank, I didn't focus much on it technical aspect but I focus more on its well-written storyline and execution. As a writer who also loves to write romantic tragedy kind of stories, I was genuinely enthralled by its plot. The first time I watched it I said to myself that I wouldn't watch it again because I found myself sobbing as the film roll its credits.
I have watched a hefty amount of Filipino films, ever since my childhood I was exposed to FPJ's films and other comedy films such as Dolphy's, because these two people are my grandpa's favorite actors so I get to watch them all the time even though I couldn't understand the story back then. As time goes by I've stopped watching Filipino films and went ahead to watch international films but recently I got to watch Filipino films like Batch '81 directed by Mike de Leon which is also one of my favorite Filipino film and Lino Brocka's Maynila sa mga Kuko ng Liwanag. I wouldn't have known about films made by them if it wasn't for my professor during my freshman days in college. Despite all the compilation of Filipino films that I've watched, Hintayan ng Langit always stayed close to my heart ever since I've watched it. It has a great storyline, great cinematography, well-written plot, and great casting. The film truly is enchanting and you'll undoubtedly be pulled by its storyline and get encaptivated by the character's lines.

“masters”
Tumblr media
SPOILERS AHEAD!!
Batch 81′ is a Filipino film directed by Mike De Leon and it is about neophytes who wants to join a fraternity Alpha Kappa Omega. The were humiliated, abused and harrassed by their so called “masters”. Their masters are the ones they obey, the harrassment and abuse are part of their initiation to be able to join the fraternity. This movie for me has a lot of symbolisms about the Martial Law during the 1970′s which made the movie interesting. Although it has a lot of fighting scenes and it showed a lot of violence which is not suitable for young audiences. Even though this film showed a lot of violence it is still a good film because of its narrative and because it really showed the brotherhood of a fraternity despite the abuse that they got and despite the loss of some of the neophytes in the film. I’m not saying I like the film and I’m not saying I don’t like it but from my opinion it is ‘okay’. I think people who enjoys watching films that tells a story from a perspective of a man will enjoy this movie but overall for me it is ‘okay’.

work to live, live to work
Tumblr media
Yield is about a story of 9 children each with different struggles in life. It showcases the life of those less unfortunate. It shows their struggles as they have jobs in order to help support their family and to pay for their needs while two children have physical deficiencies. I think this documentary is very heartwarming because their parents have used them to work fro the needs of their family. I learned that they only raise children because they expect their children to work for them since they aren’t successful. The cinematography was good because of the vibrant colors and it brought out the beauty of nature in the video. What I like more about this documentary is that you get to know the story of each children in the video, although it didn’t have interviews but it is pretty much understood. This documentary really warms my heart because I love children and the fact that it opened my eyes to be more thankful for what I have today because there are people like those children that has to work at an early age in order for them to help feed their family. I say this is a very well made documentary.

In the City Lights of Maynila
Tumblr media
Setting the Cinematography aside and focusing on the narrative, Maynila: sa mga kuko ng Liwanag is a film that will make you understand the situation of the Philippines during the year 1970′s. The narrative itself makes you want to watch it because it has a lot of symbolisms and hidden messages about the Martial Law and about the struggles of poverty during that time. Life lessons were also told in this film, which would make you realize how thankful you are with the riches and needs that you have. In this film, it tackles societal issues and poverty, it shows the cruel side of superiority of those who have power and the inferiority of those who are penurious. Aside from its narrative, the actors did a great job at portraying each role given to them. Overall, the film is a must watch especially for people who loves watching classic Filipino films and films that has a lot of symbolisms.

the sound of The Jazz Singer
Tumblr media
Mesmerized by the fact that The Jazz Singer (1927) by Alan Crosland was the very first film that used a talkie, not only did it show the evolution of technology in film but it showcased a different way for film to tell stories. with the use of sound in film it was much more exciting to watch a movie in the theaters. I’ve read that it adds emotion to the film with the use of sounds because when you hear a suspense music it makes you nervous and when you hear the sound of birds it makes you calm. but going back to the film itself, all I can say is that The Jazz Singer is a must watch because the narrative itself is good and very heartwarming, the songs that Al Jolson sang in the movie makes you love jazz music. The enthusiastic and exaggerated portrayal of Al Jolson in his character makes it more exciting to watch the movie. I recommend watching the movie.

a time for HUGO
Tumblr media
As I sit down and relax to watch Martin Scorcese’s 2011 film Hugo, I think about all the little details of the movie including its narrative and the cinematography. the cinematography itself is great, the lighting and the color matches every mood of the character and the movie showcased the beauty of Paris during the 1930′s. Scorcese really did a great job to make this movie, not only was I amazed about the film’s cinematography but the narrative itself is great and I learned something regarding the history of film and the life of a french filmmaker George Melies. I really recommend watching he movie specially for future filmmakers to give you a little glimpse about the history of film.

Maybe that's why a broken machine always makes me a little sad, because it isn't able to do what it was meant to do. Maybe it's the same with people, if you lose your purpose its like you're broken
