There's a balance. Are you sick? Don't go to practice. Do you just not feel like it? Maybe. Maybe go to practice. I think a big problem is that kids and teens think that it's all or nothing, and what you mention is a place in between they don't even realise is there
Can we normalize doing nothing, please?
I work with kids. These kids are at my program before and after school, and then some of them have sports/dance/music sometimes all of the above before they finally go home, eat dinner, and go to sleep. Then rinse and repeat everyday, and games and more classes on the weekend, etc.
I’m all for extracurriculars, but this turns into the teen who is not only in the school play, but they’re on the newspaper, the football team, and seven different clubs. In college they take double the courseloads, and then once they graduate…what?
They work themselves raw because they arent used to downtime. They’ve been told they can always be doing something, and they don’t know how to relax. This turns into the adult that has anxiety because there’s nothing left to clean, the adult that desperately wants to watch that TV show but can’t force themselves to sit long enough for it.
Then they turn into the moms and dads who spend all their free time ferrying their kids to extracurriculars.
Like, these kids don’t know what downtime is? I told a kid I did nothing last weekend, and he looked at me like I was crazy. He asked what I was doing this weekend and I said “Probably sleeping, mostly,” and he actually gasped. Then he rattled off a bunch of things I could do, to which I had to stop him.
“No, you don’t understand. I plan on sleeping. I’m booked.”
“But you could–”
“Nah. I’m just gonna rest.”
It was as if I had said a bad word or something. I asked what he does when he gets sick, and he says he goes to practice anyway. I asked him what he does if he doesn’t feel like going, and he said he goes anyway. I asked when he takes time to rest, and he said when he sleeps at night.
Bring back lazy Sundays. Bring back Saturday morning cartoons. Bring back the idea of relaxing and soaking in your day before moving into the next thing. Bring back the right to breathe, the right to rest.
Bring back mental health days, and taking a break. Bring back taking a walk or watching a show or setting a timer to remind yourself to stop cleaning and relax.
If you’re running at 100% all the time with no time to recharge, then your battery is going to die spectacularly, and probably at the worst possible time.

Okay, but what are you actually doing? Because solidarity doesn't kill cancer. (I'll be honest, I know nothing about if Ibm donates money/funds research anyway). But make my day, tell me what you do

1 in 8 women in the US will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. To show our solidarity with all those affected by this illness, we’ve turned the IBM logo pink for the month of October.

I definitely hear what you're saying. In my mind, it's not a one quick fix, it's a much bigger problem of careers that are fully respectable not getting paid enough (teachers, authors, most careers?), while professional athletes get paid tons. It also makes you wonder if there's that big of a discrepancy between music and reading, because it feels like so many more artists can support themselves via music yet places like spotify and pandora provide tons of music for little to no cost. Kinda like a library. (It's also worth noting that I'm 17, and therefore frequently forget about little details like the economy. Oops). I kinda didn't answer any questions there, I just created more. Sorry!
So I was reading a thing that argued for authors to be paid higher, and the other person compared authors to surgeons, and for a second I thought, okay, yeah, doctors save lives. That’s more important. But then I realized: reading built me. A surgeon might one day save my life, but reading literally gave me. It gave me the imagination and creativity I have. It made me a stronger student to my core. It made me articulate, or enough to at least get my point across. It’s given me ways to connect to hundreds of different people, in so many ways. All the potential I have as a young, “smart” student, comes from the little girl my parents read to. My health is important, but reading? Gave me everything.

Protect Bisexuals who have to deal with people saying “ Why is everyone suddenly bi?”
Protect Bisexuals who get told that “Everyone is a bit bi”
Protect Bisexuals who get told that they “eventually will pick a side”
Protect Bisexuals from people shutting them down when they talk about their love for boys and girls
Protect Bisexuals who have a hard time being out because of everyday biphobia and closeted Bisexuals who are scared to come out for these reasons

so for my art project we had to fake a death/murder. for mine I did someone who had jumped off a building. when I was laying down while the picture was being taken, 7 people came running up to me asking if I was okay and if I needed an ambulance etc. I’ve been suicidal for a very long time, and the thoughts of jumping off buildings and ending my life have gone through my mind a thousand times. But the fact that people actually stopped and came running over to see if I was alright made me see that people do care, strangers care. so many people looked and walked past, but these 7 people some how took these suicidal feelings away… weird huh? But the moral of this story is that people do care about you, even people who don’t know who you are.
