What’s this? a PSA? How unusual!
One of our followers sent us a fanmail asking about the state of the blog, specifically mentioning the askbox. So, here’s the rundown:
Sandy has lost interest in running the blog. James (that’s me!) has been busy with a new full-time job and part-time uni this year, and also his first posted fanfiction. I haven’t heard from Andrew for a good long while either.
I do want to continue the blog, as I enjoy running it. That’s what this has always been about, really - writing prompts, trying to make them concise, and open, and maybe a little funny. That whole process is fun. So I don’t begrudge the others their declining interest; If they’re not having fun then what’s the point?
We have had some submitters writing in even while we’re silent, and that’s fantastic, thank all of you. I’m going to go queue those after I finish this PSA.
Which brings us to the askbox. When Sandy and I started the blog, we didn’t ever anticipate people writing in asking for specific prompts. It was actually a couple of years before the askbox got so busy we had to institute the close-it-at-100 plan. The thing is… answering an ask is hard, somehow. It’s definitely less fun than just making up prompts. I’m not sure how to move forward with the asks - whether I should try digging up old prompts in response instead of making up new ones, close the askbox permanently (or rather, just make a policy of not answering requests for specific prompts. I do enjoy hearing about people’s works in progress though, and many of those asks are almost prompts themselves. Thoughts?
I’m gonna think about it for a while. I’ll probably end up deleting the backlog whatever my decision, though. That’s just… a huge pile of work, that I don’t think I want to do.
I have vague plans to clear up the blog a bit and get back to posting prompts regularly, but not just yet. I have one last assignment to finish for uni (due tonight, actually xD) and december is crunch-time at work, so I’ll probably get to it during the christmas holidays.
For now, though, I’m off to the queue to blow the dust off those submissions!
