Jerry David DeCicca — New Shadows (Bwatue)

Jerry David DeCicca once fronted the dark folk Black Swans, alongside his friend Noel Sayre, a soulful foil on violin, who tragically died in a swimming pool accident in 2008. DeCicca kept going, first as Black Swans, later under his own name, building a catalogue of subtle, country flavored songs, some heartbreaking in their simplicity, others giddy and adorned with animal sounds. Along the way, he has shepherded a slew of long-lost country singers through their re-emergence, producing late career albums for Ed Askew, Chris Gantry, Augie Meyers and Will Beely. He seemed a lot like the icons he worked with, a master craftsman unfairly overlooked. Of his last album before this, I wrote, “This album distills the craft and struggle of music making into gorgeous, deceptively simple-sounding songs like it’s nothing, but it’s not nothing, far from it.”

Cut to this fifth solo album, and it is somewhat disorienting to find DeCicca’s mordant murmur enmeshed in a gothy web of synthesizers. His worn-in country sprech-song holds court in shimmery electric architectures. The keyboards glow in the dark. He follows programmed pulses that hurtle onward even as he pauses to consider. Even so, it still sounds like DeCicca, the lyrics are casually incisive, the humor a little goofy, the melodies rebel country at a very high level, but it also sounds like the inside of a disco.

The album reflects the disruptive events of the last few years, in lyrics that describe a video funeral (“Sing”) and in others that mark the listless passage of time (“I know life ain’t a free ride, wash up, dishes are piling high, lost days, lost days” from “Lost Days”). The use of electronics may also be an artifact of that pandemic period where live collaboration became difficult; this may have lasted longer for DeCicca than other people, given some recent health troubles.

But also the pandemic opened up collaboration for a lot of artists, in ways that ignored physical proximity. I don’t know if that’s the case for this group of players, but they are a remarkably diverse group—two old hands from Los Lobos (David Hidalgo and Steve Berlin), a brace of new jazz tyros (James Brandon Lewis, Jeff Parker and Aquiles Navarro of Irresistible Entanglements) and the wonderful Rosali Middleton. They bring depth and color and human roughness to these unusually pristine electronic tracks. Listen, for instance, to the two sax players, Steve Berlin with his guttural, low-end swagger in “97 Nights,” Lewis more refined and fluid but just as soulful on contemplative “Lost Days.” Or consider the burning blues guitar licks that David Hidalgo adds to “Sing,” all smoke and sinew amid the synths and keyboards. He reminds me of prime era Mark Knopfler in the way he bends the notes and coaxes them to moan.

Yet fundamentally this is DeCicca’s show, and its success rides on his songwriting ability. Not to worry. “Angelina” is one of his finest songs ever, a still one full of darkness and yearning, and the curlicues of trumpets that Navarro adds amplify, but don’t overwhelm its gorgeous simplicity. “Manzanita Bay” is another good one, a little mournful as presented here, but you could imagine it turning into a sing-along stomper in other, less ruminative hands.

New Shadows is a bit of a departure, and its New Order-style goth-dance framing takes some getting used to. But it’s still DeCicca, still one of the best songwriters going, just through a different lens.

Xiv cupped the pendant in his hands and held it up in front of his face. “Night mom,” he said. 

“Goodnight sweet sweet sweet sweat p-pear p-good good good near…”

His stomach dropped out with the recurrence of the glitch. “No, stop it,” he hissed. “Mom.” 

He pressed the off button on the pendant, frantically trying to reset it. Reset it to what he didn’t know. He wasn’t the tech guy, he just knew that sometimes turning things off helped. Maybe electronics needed rest the same as people. Maybe that was why no one could figure out how to keep a human mind intact in a metal and silicone frame. It. Push. Never. Push. Turned. Push. Off. Pushpushpush.

“Great holiday sunflower sturgeon sunnerfly build my sweet boy,” the pendant garbled. 

Xiv held the power button and his breath for a count of ten. When he let both go again the pendant beeped out an ear piercing error and went black. He picked up a pillow, mashed it tight against his face, and groaned loudly into it in frustration. Then he held it there, enjoying the tiny security of the snug closeness of his breath. 

There was a knock on the door. In a huff, Xiv dropped the pendant and the pillow onto his bed and threw his hands in the air. “What?!” 

The door opened slowly with a quiet squeak. Peleon stood on the other side of it, looking more rumpled than Xiv had ever seen him. Instead of sharp creases and dark silks he was wearing a pair of grey herringbone patterned sweatpants and a pine green t-shirt with the name of the Werner concert hall scrawled across it in thick script. His hair was wet and pushed straight back and his feet were bare. He hovered just across the threshold, looking down at it, seemingly unsure if he was allowed to cross. 

Peleon’s uncertainty of his place in his own home, a home Xiv was now making unsure by taking up space in it, put a cold spike through the warmth Xiv had first felt upon seeing Peleon look strangely touchable. 

“What?” he asked, sharp with aggravation. 

Peleon winced. “You seemed like you were having some trouble. I thought maybe if it was anything to do with the house I’d offer to help. I’ve been here for nearly eight years. I’ve got most of it figured out by now.” 

Xiv sat down on his bed and protectively closed his hand over the pendant. 

Peleon’s eyes followed the movement. He crossed his arms. The peacocks on the display of his prosthetic danced in irritation around his bicep. The whole arm glowed a faint purple for the moment. Xiv had known about Peleon’s prosthetic, but having never seen it he had erroneously assumed it would be a matte silver or black no-nonsense affair, the same as Wagner’s whole body, the same as Peleon’s attitude. 

“I didn’t know there was anything you didn’t have figured out,” Xiv said. “Everything in the world seems to be open to you, what with the-” He gestured vaguely towards his head. 

Peleon nodded. “With the mods I can hear and see more than others, but only as a matter of convenience. Given some time and any access to the information you can know everything I do. You just have to know where to look.” 

“Sometimes there’s nothing to see,” Xiv grumbled. 

Peleon took a small step into the room. “What is it we’re looking for?” he asked softly. 

Xiv hadn’t quite realized how much he’d come to depend on Peleon acting like he knew everything. How much smaller it made his world feel, to know that Peleon couldn’t crack the whole thing open for him. He sighed and tossed the pendant to Peleon, who caught it against his chest. 

“It’s this piece of junk.” 

He regretted the word the moment he said it. Acknowledging that the pendant was breakable felt like he might be losing his mother all over again. There was a backup of the data of course, but for some reason thinking about a backup of a backup made her memory feel even further away. 

Peleon turned the pendant over in his hands, studying it closely. “What is this? A second gen Sparo?”

“Yeah, I was one of the first people to get my hands on it. Benefits of a sob story and the family name.” 

“Torres?” Peleon asked absently. 

“No,” Xiv admitted.  

Peleon looked up and studied Xiv in the same way he’d been mentally picking apart the pendant. 

“No,” Xiv clarified. Torres isn’t my real last name. It’s Deacon.” 

“Torres was her name,” Peleon said. 

Xiv nodded. 

“Thank you for trusting me with that. I knew all of it, of course. I did a quite thorough background check before I let Wagner bring you on, but-”

“Because the only mystery allowed around here is you,” Xiv muttered.

“But!” Peleon said, raising his voice. “That’s never mattered to me. Not as much as who you want to be, anyway. That’s the most important version of any of us.” 

Of course. “Thanks.” 

Peleon tossed the pendant back to Xiv. “I can’t be sure without pulling it apart and doing some hands on data analysis, but I think it’s just a small corruption in the data tree that routes the conversation adaptation in the programming. Should be easy enough to get back on track. If you’d allow me to fiddle with it.” 

Xiv placed the pendant into its charging bed on the nightstand. “You’ve got enough to do, surely, without spending time on my nonsense.” 

Peleon sighed. “The hours are too long lately.” He ran his neon tinged hand through his hair, knocking a couple ginger locks askew to cascade down the side of his forehead. “It’s hard to fill them without Wagner here as taskmaster.”

“You should spend some of them sleeping,” Xiv said.  

“Well, I would, but my new roommate is a disaster. Just a real loud asshole. He may also be keeping you awake right now.” 

Xiv threw a pillow at Peleon who punched it back at him. It landed on the floor between them and they both looked down at it for a long moment in awkward anticipation, as if it might come to life and choose one of them over the other. When nothing happened Peleon stretched his arms behind his back and backed out of Xiv’s room into the hallway. 

“Let me know when you want me to take her,” Peleon said. 

“Sure,” Xiv answered. He stood up. “Hey.” 

Peleon paused, one foot already pointing toward his bedroom at the end of the corridor. “Yeah?”

“Thanks,” Xiv said. 

Peleon gave him a small smile and then looked off over Xiv’s shoulder, as if looking at him straight on was uncomfortable. “Of course, that’s what friends do, right?”

“Right,” Xiv said. “Friends.”

Peleon nodded and shut Xiv’s door behind him as he left.

Undying Love

Despite heat, work travel, and a growing sense of dread in the world, Echo and I are still enjoying kinky hypnosis fun here and there.  It’s hard to schedule fun despite the fact that we live together, thanks to other responsibilities and slightly askew schedules - but Sunday mornings we can usually make work.  I assume people in LDRs long for the greener grass of shared homes, but responsibilities can make certain activities elusive.  As what can be loosely defined as responsible adults, you have to make time for the people that matter, because otherwise you’ll always be doing something else.  If you get an Echo in your life, you carve out all the time you can - I need to find a way to carve out more that would fit in with her schedule.

Why?

Because Sunday morning was awesome.  Given how warm it is, it’s difficult to turn up the heat - doubly so as Echo works out really hard and we needed to be careful around her legs.  Thankfully I also pretend to work out hard, so I can usually move things around to make sure she’s pretty happy too.  Sometimes twice!  Or more!  Well, not usually more. Things can get pretty unpleasant if you try for too much.  There’s probably some parable about climaxes and Icarus and flying too close to the sun, but I’m pretty sure if I googled something about too much physical pleasure and feathers, I would not get the intended result.

After, she did more than a little teasing of me.   For those just joining us, I’m generally pretty much on my own most of the time - we consider ourselves equals, we have jobs, we have responsibilities. But over the years, she’s claimed things like she gets to eat the first bite of food, or when we’re fooling around I have to ask permission when it’s time to - well, you know - and also she decided what kind of underwear I’m allowed to wear.   

The whole agreed-upon fiction that is D/s is what any two or more people decide that it is, but about two years and change of regular hypnosis activity and D/s I’m sure the whole “fiction” and “agreed upon” lines start to blur or fade away.  When it comes time to buy new underwear, I don’t even look at any kind but what she likes. Am I just used to it? Did she put something in my head?  Is it just to make her happy?  I’m not entirely sure - she doesn’t ask much of me, but it seems I’ve got no problems doing most of it.  Where were we?

Oh yes, the Nova Pro 100.  After fluffing me up a bit, it was time for the chair.  The chair is this old massage chair, with a sheet to increase the snuggle factor when the Nova Pro 100 goes on.  For anyone just joining us, the Nova Pro 100 is a very 20th century light-and-sound machine using weird noises and LEDs to muck with your brain waves.  (That may not be the exact verbiage on the box.) Aside from this jokingly being referred to a brainwashing machine, I’m also a huge dork for old electronic things so this is especially delightful on that level too.  Today’s session didn’t have many lights that I recall before the end, but it had plenty of sounds and I remember the volume level changing at one point.   The constant strangeness of this device is I’m fairly confident I wasn’t sleeping, but it has gotten to the point where I generally can’t remember anything for very long.

Memory in a Nova Pro session is sort of like walking on the sand, dragging a broom behind you.  You can see a few steps behind you - but the broom smooths it out as you go.  You’ve probably got a solid minute of memory tops before it gets mopped up and while in that moment I can feel like I remember something, but then that’s gone, too.  I know she was talking, I know I was listening, I’m pretty sure I wasn’t responding, and I couldn’t  begin to tell you what was the subject of her one-sided conversation with me after my eyes closed.  This is consistent with a lot of the previous sessions.  She could be programming me, she could be talking about something on the news, or maybe it was hot sexy stuff.  I have no idea.  It didn’t even occur to me to think about this until I started writing this post and I’m sitting here going “...wait a minute, what the heck do I tell these people she did?”

Afterward, I can say that she did the kind of things that married couples do to one another when one of them has their wife/dominant-approved underwear on, which is a little too tight, with the kind of merciless physical teasing you probably would approve.  After that was lunch at home - thankfully we had something she heated up for us, so I wouldn’t have to pretend like I wasn’t glowing when we went out in public.

Maybe it’s a blessing that I can’t remember the specific contents of the trance, although I don’t know if it’s intentional or not. Maybe my brain thinks it’s funny.   It seems like the kind of thing I would do. And GLOW season 3 was great, check it out.

It’s Mutual

A/N: Warning: Spoilers for Solo: A Star Wars Story, droid angst, mentioned character death, pining, and mild sexual content. Don’t own it either.

It’s Mutual

“That young male’s heart fluctuations tells me he’s in love with the princess. And she’s got it bad for him. So, this trip might have to be a very, very long one. So, let’s start with that negative power coupling.” The Millennium Falcon’s computer languidly informed C-3PO.

As the prissy golden droid bleated in confusion, the Falcon’s computer repeated the last suggestion specifying the deteriorating, but not quite ready for replacement– power cable. This time her communication laced with a snappy binary invective. And a few curses, for good measure.

The male-programmed protocol droid startled in shock, addressing the Falcon’s captain at his shoulder in a prim core-world accent..

“Sir! I don’t know where your ship learned to communicate, but it has the most peculiar dialect. I believe, sir, it says that the power coupling on the negative axis has been polarized. I’m afraid you’ll have to replace it.”

The Falcon felt the warm contact of her captain as he peered into her data display, confirming the news. She could see how his gold-green eyes were now framed by the deepening web of fine lines from the natural aging processes that afflicted organic beings. Han Solo had changed immensely from that small, scrawny youth barely out of his teens when he had first boarded the Falcon, and met L3-37 herself, in her previous autonomous droid construct. More than ten years on, and L3 knew Solo incredibly well. Perhaps too well; being, as she was, electronically integrated with the vessel Solo lived in. As a result, it was an exceedingly intimate arrangement. L3 and Han both considered the Corellian freighter their home. A relationship more entwined, yet less complicated than L3’s companionship with the Falcon’s former owner Lando Calrissian, had ever been.

Lando, in whose arms L3 had critically malfunctioned. Crystal tears falling from his long dark lashes onto L3’s shattered form as he cried out her name, promising to fix the unfixable. Lando; a chatty, beautiful, elegant, and elegantly flawed human - who L3-37 had developed deep feelings for, and even now–often missed. A shallow, vain, gorgeous cheat - Lando, who had eventually gambled away the Falcon...To Han Solo.

Han Solo was not elegant, nor eloquent. He was a rough-and-tumble, streetwise, scruffy rapscallion. Another human that was flawed, yet beautiful too. And Han never gambled the Falcon away. Misplaced it, had it seized, locked up or stolen a few times. Wandered drunk around the hangar for hours wondering where the ship was before passing out underneath, curled up against the landing strut. But Han would never willingly part with the Falcon. Never ever. Over his dead body.

L3 appreciated that kind of commitment from a biological toward a fellow mechanical. The rest of the Falcon did too.

“Well, of course I’ll have to replace it,” snarled Solo at C-3PO. Derisiveness rose from his collar and spine, the Corellian was angry, completely exhausted and–expectedly–irritated with the fussy organic-obsessed robot C-3PO, that tottered, stressed and wailed about seemingly everything.

Some droids were not designed or perhaps destined for liberation, L3 conceded reluctantly. This casual notion was swiftly met with outrage, debating data, projections, and insults from all of the Falcon’s computer systems in a chaotic flurry of inflamed Corellian binary . Momentarily cowed by the barrage, the main electronic entity of L3 retreated behind the programmed confines of the Falcon’s navigation computer.

Consequently, the lights in the corridor fluttered. Solo’s features narrowed up at them in concern, as he addressed the wookiee co-pilot hanging out of the upper maintenance panels of the ship.

Solo’s body temperature remained elevated, but his heart and breathing had for the most part calmed. Though here was that surge of anxiety when he was around the other human onboard–the princess. As soon as Leia’s voice chimed or she was within his field of view, Han Solo’s vital readings went askew. When Leia was present, the Corellian smuggler’s heart thudded, his breath caught, and a flush of heat travelled from his core up and out to his torso, heart, and (after far too long to be healthy) his head. Han then moved rapidly from task to task, with an uncharacteristic nervous energy. The princess too, upon interacting with Han, emitted the same rapid fluctuations in her heart rate and vitals. Currently the atmosphere was taut, strung to a breaking point; where the pair vacillated between Solo chasing after the princess in frustration, and having Leia chase after him in outrage; not unlike on countless Rebel Alliance missions before.

L3, who as a droid, had witnessed this sort of ridiculous behaviour between brightly plumaged courting avians on Tanaab; thought it extremely suitable that the Falcon’s gifted flyboy pilot would pursue his chosen mate in such a manner.

All-in-all, these two particular humans’ bizarre mating ritual made for an often amusing, vocal,and always entertaining diversion. And three years of it too.

It had been long enough. The Millennium Falcon’s hyperdrive was crippled, and it would take weeks, if not months to reach the closest safe haven.

It was time.

Han’s ambient vital readings were different from when they had flown through the asteroid field.  By the near-miasma of pheromones in the air, L3 knew it wasn’t the rush of aerial combat, or the surge of the glorious freedom of flight and power that drove the captain now. No, she’d seen this before in him–a decade ago. Another time, with another girl, one who was ultimately not meant to be. Nor then did she want to be.

When L3-37 had walked and talked amongst the teeming masses of organic beings, the droid had been in love (and loved by) another then too. And though it had been love at first sight for Han Solo and the Millennium Falcon, neither he nor L3 could foresee that they would be parted from their respective partners: Qi’ra and Lando, from that long ago time, and both Solo and L3 forever bonded to the Millennium Falcon instead. He with his heart and spirit, she with her navigational cortex–as in; literally wired in. And through the link they shared that was the ship, she loved him now too. But though he called her–the combined entities of L3 and the Falcon “Baby,” and cared and loved and lived in the ship that housed so many computerized sentient souls. They all instantly knew that when the fiery revolutionary princess bounded across their threshold; all their mechanical, electronic and organic beings would be altered forever.

The petite pale spitfire of a girl stood toe to toe with the Falcon’s irreverent captain, obstinate and angry, despite the regular presence of the giant (often laughing) wookiee at the Corellian’s rear. The blush rose in the the girl’s – Princess Leia’s cheeks with her fury. The captain could be so disrespectful. Couldn’t he follow orders? Why did he defy command and risk his life so? It wasn’t about the payment was it? Threats of leaving again? Just getting the job done? Only fuel and parts for payment? There had to be more to him than that! Oooooh, he drove that princess to her wits-end!

And the way the princess looked at Solo; glaring straight into his pupils when she was upset. A wicked energy crackling between them. Then when the handsome Corellian’s back was to her, Leia would rake her eyes over him, settling on the cant of his hips, or the breadth of his shoulders. As he turned, she would avert her gaze to a datapad or output, feigning disinterest. It was so obvious. Ridiculously obvious.

So, in the intervening three years of building sexual tension, it was not just the members of Rogue Squadron, the tech crews, command, or other organics placing bets on the two lovesick idiots. Self-aware droids like L3, Artoo, and C1-10P; Large space-faring vessels like Home One, the Liberty (Calamarian ships–a rather bubbly bunch), the Ghost (another fine Corellian freighter, a saucy one too) and whichever other interested electronic entities were around, would trade tawdry gossip in binary. Placing wagers with power cell allotments and memory slots. Who would set the other off? Would Leia come steaming after Han? Or would Han try to corner the princess into admitting her feelings, risking another ego and ball-shrivelling insult? Have they been “accidentally“ locked in a confined space by exasperated personnel? Again? And again?! For the fifth time?? Would the oblivious Skywalker, or the nattering protocol droid shatter another almost-moment between Solo and the princess? Who would make the first move? Would Solo end up in med-bay as a result?

In spite of all of the mating ritual drama, L3 and the Falcon both adored the girl. Solo had his own, most likely messy biological reasons for his interest in Princess Leia. The young firebrand was considered physically attractive, if on the smallish side of the human female height spectrum. But to L3, more importantly, Leia was driven, energetic and dedicated to the good cause. The right cause. Freedom, justice and the rights of all beings were her mission. Leia was impassioned and dedicated, the heart of the Rebellion, as if she could power it by will alone. But this sort of relentless drive was impossible to maintain in biological sentients indefinitely. Without rest or relief, they were prone to errors and breakdowns. And that’s where Solo stepped in, always pushing a stimulating cup of kaffe or refueling mug of hearty soup in Leia’s hand–giving the princess a hard look, “Y’gotta take a break, Sweetheart.” The outwardly prickly Solo melted around the princess–cynicism became compassion, comfort, care. He focused on Leia when she was present. Occasionally - no, often, to his and the ship’s detriment. After a particularly tough mission; Han would get patched up and heal, the Falcon would get some replacement parts, maybe even a new armor panel–and the Rebellion would continue for another day.

And when they were in the heat of battle, or exulting after a victory, the princess radiated an energy no mechanical could explain, nor detect with common sensors–somehow–to them, Leia just glowed.

The older awakened mechanical beings vowed they saw it; an aura around the princess. Not unlike the energy that buzzed in a near visible field around Skywalker. It seemed preposterous, for sentient mechanicals to see what they could not actually reproduce as actual data. But the more self-aware the mechanical, the more they swore of that force around the two youths.

Or Force, as Artoo insisted.

Solo and the princess created their own energy. A smouldering, thick tension– red hot. A distinct pressure difference in the air. In the confines of the ship, it was currently building to critical levels. And L3 knew something had to be done.

She had a plan.

The princess was occupied welding a valve in the port circuitry bay. The work was sound, and experimental bursts through the lines confirmed its strength. As the princess wrapped up her macrofuser, L3 sent out a quiet command and the Falcon locked the valve, imitating a line seizure. The onboard sentient mechanicals, with the exception of the fuss-pot protocol droid, waited with a patience only a binary soul could have. The little princess pushed, twisted, and grunted her exertion in trying to turn the handle. The Falcon further locked down the valve as the girl put an unnatural amount of strength into her efforts, almost dislodging it. Silently the ship’s captain slid in behind the girl, his movements deliberate and calculated.

He might stand a chance, was the unanimous opinion of the Falcon’s many onboard systems and L3-37. They all rooted for Solo, their beloved captain and owner. All keenly aware of just how smitten with the princess the irascible, yet noble-hearted smuggler was.

And how lonely, bitter, and directionless he was without her.

According to a first-of-its-kind study published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, researchers from Duke University Obesity Prevention Program reported that those who weighed themselves daily lost about three times as much weight and body fat, compared to those stepped on the scale less frequently.

Researchers enrolled 47 overweight men and women into a six-month weight loss clinical trial that used electronic scales that were networked to the Duke University researchers. All subjects were instructed to weigh in daily and were given some basic advice about healthy eating and exercise behaviors (i.e., increase water consumption, walk more, eat fewer snacks, enjoy more fruits/veggies).

After six months, the researchers evaluated the weights and body compositions of all subjects and found that those who weighed in daily (51% of all subjects) lost an average of 20 pounds, compared to about 7 pounds lost among those who weighed themselves about five days per week. Subjects who weighed themselves daily were also more likely to report following through on more healthy diet and lifestyle behaviors.

The authors concluded: “Daily weighing may trigger the self-regulatory processes that promote behavior change. Those who weigh daily report greater adoption of diet and exercise behaviors associated with weight control.”

This study adds to previous studies that also reported that those who weigh themselves more frequently lose more weight and are less likely to gain weight over time. Another study found that the more people overeat on a given day, the less likely they are to weigh themselves the next day. So, simply getting in the habit of daily weigh-ins can help keep you on track.  What’s more,  frequent weigh-ins are one way to keep your weight stable for a lifetime because you can make changes when you’ve gained 1-3 pounds rather than 10 to 15.

How to Get Into a Healthy Weigh-In Habit

If you don’t like stepping on the scale (most of us don’t!) here are some strategies for overcoming scale-itis:

Start by weighing yourself one day a week. It’s important to use the same scale, the same time and ideally naked. To start out, weigh in on Friday, as it’s the day of the week most people weigh the lowest (Monday is the highest.)

When you start to see some positive progress, try a Monday, Wednesday and Friday or Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday weigh-in schedule.

Once you get into the habit of weighing yourself three days a week, just make it part of your morning routine—like brushing your teeth.

If you want to know how much your clothes weigh, read this.

Whatever you do, don’t beat yourself up or get down about the number on the scale. Consider the number an objective measure of your eating and fitness behaviors. It’s just information that you can use to reach your healthy weight goal.

I came home from a trip in February 2017 and there was a Nova Pro 100 waiting in my office.  I didn't order it, of this I am sure.  It's not like this item has a "forget you bought this setting" of which I am aware, but it does have dozens of settings that claim to be conducive to such things as sleep, relaxation, learning, and certain libidinous pursuits.    

@Dommestic ordered it, but never did actually say if it was a gift... we weren’t exactly doing any hypnosis stuff at the time, but bringing this in to the house has resulted in a massive increase in crystals, pocket watches, research, and trips to @entrancedhypnocon​ - which will be going up to one, previously having been zero.

I've heard about the wonders of lights and sound machines in hushed tones for years, largely because few kinky people seem to be really interesting in articulating their virtues beyond "it's great."  And it is great!   To date, my experience with it has been exclusively as a subject -  I ordered a microphone off of Amazon that plugs in the 3.5mm audio port, and it's the closest thing you'll get to a sci-fi brainwashing helmet without assembling it yourself.

I’m writing this today because it’s important for me that you know someone actually makes and sells this kind of device.  Also, this explains what the darned thing is as I write about it often.

HOW LONG HAVE THESE THINGS BEEN AROUND?

Forever.  Tiger Direct mail-order electronics catalogs have been advertising these things since the late 1980s and early 1990s, near various Macintosh computers and other office doodads that would appeal to the yuppies of the first Bush era.  On one page, some sort of mind machine offering at-home hypnosis.  On the other, the new Quadras.   I haven't heard of this particular Nova Pro brand name until more recently - there were many before the Nova Pro 100, and there are new ones since then.

IS IT WORTH THE ASKING PRICE?

If you or your partner have a fetish for hypnosis in the traditional sense, and you’re not prone to light-induced seizures, I think so.  

When it comes to various other hypnotic inductions, the question I asked of many is "Does it work?" The best answer I ever heard was "It does if you believe it does," which seems to be consistent with this device's performance.    The best way I can describe the various blinking lights and sounds is like the wipers on your car.   You can focus on the lights and sounds briefly, and then it's all wiped away.   New lights and sounds appear, and those go too.  If someone is talking to you, it's the same kind of thing.  I'm told I'm responding to things, but heck if I know what some of them are.

At $400 or so, its value would be directly related to how often you might use it.  Depending on your level of desperation/shame/solitude regarding hypnosis, this could be very handy for so many levels.  Sure you have access to unlimited spirals and MP3s on your computer or phone, but short of virtual reality I don't think anything is quite as immersive.  People are making VR apps for phones, and I'd be eager to try that if you know of a good one.

WHAT DO YOU SEE AND HEAR?

It varies - the model we have has sounds similar to an old computer or game system (it boasts surf sounds, I would not describe them as such) along with red or green lights flickering.   Other colors and apparently sounds may be available.

DO I NEED TO BUY EXTRA STUFF FOR THIS?

If you want to use it alone, no - but I would recommend buying something if you want to use it with another person.   If you live with that person, you want a microphone (more below).  If your relationship will involve Skype or your phone, I would suggest a 3.5mm audio cable - basically, the same thing you'd use to plug an iPod or other audio device in a car if you don't use USB.   This allows their words to mix with the beats, blips, and beeps that the Nova Pro spits out.    The Photosonix people included a tote bag and pretty much everything you need to run it.   It does not use batteries, you have to plug it in the wall.

IS IT HOT?

It is so hot that you may have to ask your deity of choice for forgiveness after using it.   It’s not a sin but it probably should be one.

WHAT IS IT?

The Nova Pro 100 is a black box.  It's metal, it feels last-century and almost handmade.  One of the buttons was a little askew, as it was not assembled properly.  It was easy to push back in place.  It includes at least one pair of headphones - just normal, nice headphones - and a strange pair of glasses.  The glasses are basically just sunglasses with LEDs wired to them that will fry your brain, so turn down those lights to the lowest setting when you try it.  You also get also a power source, a serial cable to connect to a computer from 1996, and a manual explaining what all the preprogrammed sessions are.  I'm told there are many new more downloadable sessions but we have not yet looked in to those.   Considering the advances in personal electronics in the past 10-15 years alone, there's a definite "some dude found this in the back of a Radio Shack" vibe to this item, down to the very 1980s-Star Tours-crew-member-colored tote bag included to carry the hardware in a discreet way so nobody has to know about your filthy hypnosis fetish on the way to a trip or a play party or on the subway.

WHAT ABOUT THAT AUDIO PORT?

The designers may have neglected a USB port due to the age of the devices, but the 3.5mm audio jack is actually quite versatile for future-proofing it, minus the various smart devices that opted out of including such a port in their latest generation.  You can plug in a microphone if you wish.  You may plug in an iPod or iPhone using those 3.5mm cables you use for your car that they sell at Big Lots for a dollar or three.   This also means you can hook it up to your computer - so if you really wanted to do so, you could hook up the Nova Pro 100 to Skype so someone in another city, state, or country can talk to you while the Nova Pro 100 does its thing to you locally.   I've been fascinated about the notion of remote-control adult toys, and apparently the Photosonix engineers were one step ahead of technology by ensuring you could add any extra audio in here without a hitch.

I do not have much experience with MP3s but I assume you could also use this in conjunction with any recordings you have.  Timing the wake-up and induction elements may be tricky though.  The device is programmable, so perhaps that's something a more creative person could do.  Then again if you're capable of going through that kind of effort, you've probably rolled your own VR hypnosis contraption for your phone by now and that's much cheaper.

HOW IS IT AT HIDING DISTRACTIONS?

Fantastic.  During one session Dommestic later told me there were yelling construction workers outside and I had absolutely no idea this was happening - the headphones helped to drown out some of the exterior sound quite nicely.  When we later added a microphone to the mix, I felt like I was locked in my own head.

Despite being a fairly simple device, I found it to be excellent at keeping me focused on her words, more or less.  I tend to dart around a lot of things, generally keeping one or two more tasks in the back of my mind while working on a third.   The Nova Pro 100 does not let me do that very well.   Just when you start to get used to it, things change a bit - the sounds, the lights, and it just helps you sink down again.  

WHICH MICROPHONE IS GOOD?

We purchased a Audio-Technica ATR-1200 Cardioid Dynamic Vocal/Instrument Microphone (under $20).   Photosonix sells an older one directly, but shipping alone costs more than a similar microphone from Amazon.   We tried a PC headset mic and it sounded awful.   

The combination of the included headset and glasses with the added microphone create an irresistible, otherworldly vortex that I can only describe as spectacular.  My Mistress sometimes changes how she holds the microphone - sometimes when she gets really close to it, it's overwhelming and feels like it's coming from inside my own head.  Usually she holds it at a reasonable distance and it sounds more or less normal, but you can play around with it for special effects.

IS IT A TIME SINK?

To some extent - pre-programmed sessions are as short as five minutes or over an hour, and like anything fun you can over do it.   On the other hand if you're already staring blankly at a TV for 30 minutes a night, this might actually be more fun and given the rising prices of cable TV, perhaps a decent replacement.  I'm kidding.  Maybe.

The shorter, under 10 minute sessions we tried weren't so great.  The longer ones were a trip, to say the least.   I think we've only done more than one session in a row once or twice, and the variety does a good job of shaking you up and setting your expectations before really delivering the goods.

BUT DO I NEED ONE?

If you're a hypnosis fetishist with an experienced play partner and sufficient toys/a good tool box?  Probably not.   If you have trouble relaxing and letting go, or need a little muscle to flex against your partner, this is a gift from above.   If you start a little nervous or perhaps even aroused the relaxation setting will relieve you of those burdens quickly.  If you're working with an adequately skilled operator with decent knowledge of hypnotic language, this device does a great job of amping up what they have to say or do, while providing lovely little beeps to keep your mind very busy if they decide to go take a break.

The sci-fi feel, the fetishistic bent of having a device that exists solely to service your fetish is the kind of thing that was likely part of all of our adolescent dreams.   Having grown up in an environment where the notion of pleasure never came up even once, having one of these arounds feels like a ridiculous luxury item that will likely be stripped away when the revolution comes.   I've had access to a lot of goofy consumer electronics over the years, and I can definitely say that it's worth giving up Starbucks or sodas or whatever minor vice you can to the tune of $4-$5 a day/week until you can afford one of these (or a similar device).  If you came to me at a younger age and said “you can never buy soda again, but you can have a brainwashing machine at home” I’d say “I accept your terms, also were you sent by the devil and what is the catch?”

WHAT OTHER OPTIONS ARE THERE?

Lots of other companies are doing light/sound therapy machines that are a little more modern.

At least one or two Tumblr users are doing stuff with smart phone apps including but not limited to using the "Cardboard" VR technology to strap someone in a world.  I would expect this kind of thing to flourish thanks to the low barrier of entry for most people with smartphones.

@theleeallure​ had posted a shot or two of some sort of brainwashing chair which involves computer monitors, visuals, and restraints - which sounds fun.   Our set-up is just a chair with the Nova Pro.

WHERE CAN I TRY ONE?

As far as I know, no retailer has these set up for test drives but they do find their way in to various hypnosis conventions, gatherings, and unconferences.   @mrs-prism informs me she may be bringing one to @entrancedhypnocon for a class on hypnotic toys.  There's no guarantee you will be the one using it, but for all I know you'll get to see someone using it and that is a worthwhile experience.  Or so they tell me, I've never seen one functioning from the outside - so I’d like to see what that looks like.

If you're doing a lot of play, it's good.  The lights and sounds are a distraction from a plain induction, plus the person won't see (or hear) you if you need to consult a note or a script or just make a silly face for some reason.   Like a watch, or a crystal, or your eyes, it's a tool that can make the job easier, but you'll still want to consult resources to know what you're doing, and why, and how.  Or at least I would prefer you do this.

Make no bones about it, at $400 or more this is an expensive toy.  A hypnosis book from the likes of @hypnoobiwan should be tops on your shopping list.  The new age store near you likely has crystals for the price of a cheap dinner out, and perhaps a boutique has a nice pocket watch priced similarly.
