Alright then, to take it from the top... here’s some things I’ve done here or there for this dang game, from oldest to newest. With a big chunk of months starting with the margin Floofty there. Much is traditional and such, which is not my most practiced medium. Details on each below, just because I like over-explaining and it helps my nerves about posting.

1st: Fairly certain this Gramble is the first thing I did that was OK enough to show. Or, at least close to the first. He was one of my favorites and still is for his kindness(though he also can be really mean and paranoid, also a reason why I like him), so I wanted to get around to em. Also he’s very cute, I love my little malewife. I wanna scoop him up and hold him. Trouble is, Gramble has to have some of the most awkward proportions I’ve yet experienced while trying to draw a grumpus, I swear. That, and the more I looked at it, the more I grew to be unhappy with it. That generally applies to basically all of the drawings from last year, I find them to be “eh” at best. But it is what it is. 2nd: Second up is Flooftyyy, my most favorite. Intelligent, well-spoken, morally ambiguous, NB... and an asshole. But one with a cause they believe in that’s ultimately well intentioned, which they’ll go to self-destructive lengths to fulfill. And it’s clear they struggle to really get a grasp on how to treat people and have learned to cope with their frustration by shutting everyone out and believing them to be ignorant. While still obviously playing favorites between Eggabell and Triffany :p But by the end of the game, they’re learning that in order to really do what they want, they’ve got to really try and understand others. They’re the sort that I’d love to keep following to see their development. The awkwardness, the uncomfortable apologies and attempts at empathizing or opening up, the potential for blossoming relationships and a connection with others that, maybe, they’ve never quite experienced before. Their character is one that’s kind of close to my heart for being interesting and also quite similar to one I made and roleplayed for years. Add in the fact they’re NB and that just sealed the deal, that’s some fucking gender goddamn euphoria right there. So I had to draw them. 3rd: This one also mostly falls under the same explanation as above, except it was an effort as really figuring out grumpus bodies and proportions and stuff. Albeit in the form of solely Floofty, but my mental bandwidth for anything more than a drawing or two at a time is zilch. After that I’m spent. It was the first thing that I felt even marginally satisfied with, however.... I just feel like I’m in danger when looking at it. Like I’m gonna lose my way of things and habits I’ve built now from observing it too closely. Did keep the eyes, however. Kind of. 4th: To be real w you I just felt like drawing a Filbo after seeing a Filbo. He’s cute and I’d put a smooch on his dumb little head. Also more practice w grump stuff, but with some intentional attempts at stylization. I guess it didn’t stick, but who knows, maybe I could pick some of it back up? 5th: THE FIRST NEW DRAWING FROM A FEW DAYS AGO and it’s FLOOFTY, of course. It’s not really the first, there’s a few other things before it, but they suck so... yeah. I’d crawled out of the Bugsnax hole somewhat after a few months and failing to really do anything I actually wanted to do before, but a particular fic conked me right back 6 ft under. Piled the dirt over me and packed it in tight. So here I am again. And not only is it like that, but after binging a whole nearly 60,000 words in a night/morning, I was struck with the inspiration to actually write myself. Or try to, anyway. I have experience in RPing, but not a whole lot in actually... making a story myself. It’s not been going well, but I’ve talked plenty about that already... I’m sure it gets annoying for the whole maybe one person whose seen most of it to witness. And I’m still having fun. I’d mention the fic, but considering it’s NSFW and I’m officially tagging this... I don’t know if they’d want me advertising it as such. But surprise surprise, it’s Floofty related. And don’t get the wrong idea, while it covers explicit subject matter, that’s not entirely the point. Not a bad thing if it were, just that it’s more than that. I just like good character writing over all else, which is something liking this game to begin with heavily reinforced.... 6th: Heeeere’s Gramble, again. I’d been doing some little drawings for character profile stuff in my notebook, but I started to run into some difficulties when I got to him. This here is one of the results of the couple of little draws I did to try and understand. Again, his proportions are so *weird*. He’s just a little guy.... 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th: Here marks the first impulse draw after considering Buddy/Filbo/Beffica poly stuff. As well as the sudden Buddy drawing in general, which came as a big shock to me. These draws are suuuper rough, but I like the concepts. And goodness has this stuff been a whole ‘nother tangent... I did a fair amount of talking about it here. I’d do more, since there were TONS of details I still wanted to mentioned, but... my hands are starting to hurt. So maybe later. I realized that I kinda of messed up their design in my head bc I thought they had more similar teeth to Clumby. Whoops. That’s what I get for not using reference and same with FlooFTY’S TEETH AND THE WATCH NOOOOOOOOOO- .... *Ahem* I reckon the design is subject to change. Gotta make some little adjustment here or there, like maybe different eyes to distinct them from Floofty, but I actually rather... like the look. The hat, tie, and maybe a change to a bag on the side look nice... if totally not canon. But I will have just a little break from canon, as a treat. Otherwise it’s canon or bust. Personally, at least. I don’t really hold others to that standard unless they say they’re trying to follow canon or diverge so badly that a character is unrecognizable.

Hi! I'm curious about you figure out characterization, especially since you write a lot of minor characters and/or characters who don't get pov's? I don't quuuite have the time to go back through all the books so I always worry that my characterization is off (not that the Erins do much better sometimes lol)

blind confidence & the warriors wiki

i wish i was joking this is seriously how i do it.

so one thing is, i tend to write characters who i am interested in, which means i tend to have opinions on who they are. but the warriors wiki is Incredibly detailed my beloved never change! so when i need to go through Literally Every Single Fucking Living Cat Why Are There So Many for mtbnsof, i can do that!

i get a nice little overview of who's got a relationship to them and what notable things they've done! and then i take that and fucking Run.

for a tangible example, i had to figure out who troutstream, rushtail, mossyfoot, and hollowflight Were for medcat dovewing au. and i think...i think troutpaw and rushpaw are in mistystar's omen? they're actually somewhat important bc i think they eat kittypet food or something but! mistystar's omen isn't canon to this au bc i wanted mistystar to be the leader at the beginning so i didn't have to deal with the change in leadership bc it distracted from the story i was telling.

anyway.

so i have four apprentices and Very Little to go on. i know hollowflight trained in the dark forest, i know that his apprenticeship is really weirdly timed. well that's interesting. so i made him, i had him fail his warrior assessment the first time, and then. well that's a spoiler but i gave him another lil catalyst.

it's funny bc i decided he was the Oldest apprentice bc y'know the oots riverclan apprentices are just Shafted but i didn't really care about who he was at the time, and i liked the other three names better.

and for the other three...well, i decided troutstream was a good swimmer becuase -stream, and then i just. made the characters i needed to pad out the story.

so troutpaw was gonna b kind of impulsive very energetic and bouncy and friendly and a little overwhelming. but also very good at being a warrior.

i needed her to have someone to compete with, and i decided to give her rushpaw. i think there was a reason for this. maybe mistystar's omen? idk it's been a while. but so that meant rushpaw had to be also very athletic and good, as well as very good at getting under troutpaw's skin, but he also had to balance her out. he had to be calmer and a little more patient.

with those two nailed down, mossypaw would naturally gravitate to being dovepaw's friend, so i made her the cat who would make a good friend for dovepaw. admittedly all four of them are close, but well. you'll see.

anyway, mossypaw became...just kind of okay! not in a bad way, mind. she's a fun character. i love her.

but okay, none of those four have to be pov, so what do i do for that?

i mean the thing is these characters tend to be minor/background but central in a work i care about (whitestorm, thrushpelt, oakheart), or just not very background (blossomfall), so i think deadfoot is probably my best place to go since he doesn't have a ton of character in tallstar's revenge.

i Could Say i focused on who he was in that and the fact that he chose his son as a questing cat...but i'll be honest, it was blind confidence. this definitely ties back to the "who i need a character to be" but we also have a sense of deadfoot from a few appearances. we think of him as pretty stern, pretty serious, but we know as a kit he was excitable. all of this is pretty vague, the kind of stuff i get from skimming a wiki page.

e.g., what i did for spottedleaf, since i didn't really have a Sense of her. firepaw is super biased so i wanted to know who She Was, and i got that from her wiki page. same principle.

anyway, from there, well, i actively wrote his backstory (it's mere assignment), but if i just wanted to jump into ibtwicm, i would have probably written out a vague outline of his past. maybe not even have committed it to paper, but i would have had an Idea of it.

in some sense, i think part of writing background characters is accepting that they have little characterization, so you have to take something and run, or just make them whoever you want. i do a combo of them, and then once i know who they are, i stick to it. at least for the length of a fic, but usually, i try to stay consistent unless i'm trying to explore a new angle.

like unless i have good reason to, it's mere assignment is my formal and official deadfoot backstory. any deadfoot fic that's canon compliant going forward will be ima compliant unless i have Really Good Reason to.

and at some level...i think about? why do i like this character? what part of them is appealing?

i like deadfoot because he's just. there. the way he is. it's almost never mentioned. but i don't think. and i didn't know this as a kid but i did see cinderpaw and snowkit so i knew it couldn't be. it didn't seem Normal. and now having read tsr, they had a warrior retire early due to an injury like cinderpelt's.

(yeah fuck off erin stop covering your ass doing it twice doesn't fix it.)

anyway i liked that about him, so i sort of...he has two littermates, i killed 'em both. he...his relationship to rabbitkit is literally 0% developed but in my head i gave him the Tiniest reason to care about him more than the others. so he cares at least a Lil more. anyway anyway he also. i didn't want him to be super expressive i wanted him to clash with tallstar.

basically ig. i don't really care. which i know isn't Very helpful but when i'm writing a background character i can do whatever i want imo. and i do like i lean on the warriors wiki a lot.

i think one thing is! i just kind of lean a lot on who was born at the same time as who, that kind of thing, to build relationships. and uh i have made a lot of groups of ocs so i have an idea of the kind of dynamics i like to write. and that helps me when i'm building out background casts.

okay i kind of just rambled aimlessly for a while so if you want? if this wasn't helpful or you want clarification or idk thoughts on like a Specific Character or something? let me know. if not also that's okay no pressure i just. sometimes i just ramble and i'm not sure what the end result of it is.

(Pt 1) Ugh. Reetz. Can I just like unload how I'm feeling lately on you bc I'm 100% sure my friends are over my complaining at this point. I've been talking to this guy for awhile and he and I have mutually kept things (mostly) platonic thus far. But I have real feelings for him okay, like real real, but that part isn't important rn. I'm gonna have to make a part 2 to this bc I'm running out of room, so lookout for that 😅

(Pt 2) He's been dealing with A LOT in his personal life with family issues, so we've understandably been talking less. He texts me when he can, but I miss him so fucking much. I miss the routine we had, ya know? Like we would text/talk on the phone constantly for months, and the last few weeks we've hardly talked at all. When we do, it's like nothing has changed, but I'm so sad during the in-between parts. I just want things to get back to normal. Ugh. Thank you for reading this mess. Ily 🖤

Hmmmm this guys sounds like he’s dealing with a ton of stuff. Don’t ever feel bad about dumping stuff on me, I always have my ears (and eyes) open for my friends! I just feel bad that I didn’t see this until now.

So if you guys are (mostly) platonic but you mentioned that you two had a routine then I’m guess that you guys know each other fairly well and have spent a good amount of time together. There’s def some details missing from here that I would kill for!!!! lol like how long have you guys been hanging out/texting? how much time do you guys usually spend together? what do you do? what do you talk about? Things, details, like this make a difference.

If you are friends but you want to take a step forward and become more then I can offer you some advice for sure ( i think this is what you’re trying to say right??). So he sounds like he’s going through some tough stuff and is maybe dealing with drama and being caught in the middle of it, maybe he doesn’t know who to support or idk, a million possibilities, I don’t have the details. This guy also sounds like he needs a good hug.

If you talk face to face somewhat regularly and it’s not unusual for you guys maybe show up at his place with some food, maybe pizza or cookies or something that he really likes that isn’t off his diet (like if he’s gluten free or something like that) and just visit with him. Get him to sit down and have a conversation or go somewhere casual. Then if you get the opportunity tell him how you are feeling. BUT PLEASE KEEP IN MIND THAT HE’S ALREADY GOT A LOT ON HIS PLATE! You guys are friends, be a friend, a girlfriend or a boyfriend is still a friend. Respect what’s going on and show that you will support him and all of that cheesy stuff. I don’t want to make this post too long but please come and message me because I’d love to help you figure out what’s going on or just let you vent some more. My DMs are ALWAYS open or keep sending me msgs through my inbox.
