just so it’s established, i AM keeping will’s birthday as march 22nd— the duffers opened that door themselves and i’m simply refusing to let them close it now
i understand that it might be out of character for a lot of them to forget about this, so i’m leaving whether or not this IS addressed up to the portrayal if it ever does come up in interactions, but by default the events we see still do happen at least. this, of course, contributes to the multiple reasons why will was so dejected at the roller rink, exacerbating the painful feeling of drifting away from his friends even more.
one thing i would never buy is joyce disregarding this, though, so i’m going with will’s birthday probably getting a little lost between the shock and desperation of finding out about hopper, and i would bet my LIFE on her promising to make it up to him and planning on fully explaining when she returns, which will would be understanding of immediately of course

HEADCANONS: Stranger Things characters (any), made to attend a hay ride or corn maze. :P
Omg, thank you. Thank you. I’ve just gotten into this show and I seriously love it. I binged all of it in two days time, actually. Now I’m just patiently waiting on it to start back up. So thank you for this ask! Also a huge thanks for sending me fall because AHHHH I love spooky season so so so much.
I’m gonna do a few different characters. Mostly my bois and maybe a few of the younger characters. So this is gonna stay mostly clean. Kids, ya’ll can stay.
TAG SQUAD
There’s nobody on this particular tag list, but I know @rampagewriting enjoys the show and I think that maybe @chasingeverybreakingwave likes it. So for now I’ll tag the two of them.
[ tag doc - where you need to go if you want to be tagged \ masterlist \ about page - read before sending things maybe? ]
Under a read more because this is going to be long and I don’t want to stretch anybody’s dash out.
- billy hargrove -

⥂  It was his idea to go. “C’mon.. are you scared, darling? You know I’ll hold you.”
-- you were torn between annoyed and intrigued by the offer. even though you’ve always hated corn mazes and hayrides, you found yourself giving in before you even really thought about it.
⥂ The entire hayride consisted of Billy poking fun at ‘podunk little cow towns’ and pointing out the flaws in the costumes and choice of scares used. And you couldn’t help but laugh because honestly, he was right.
-- the most important take away from this is that despite the things people said about him all the time... He did not once allow you to feel afraid. he was right there with you the whole time. Yeah, he teased the shit out of you when you encountered something scary and you tensed up and coiled into him, but... he was actually sweet and kept you laughing.
⥂  The end of the night saw you two sitting on the hood of his trans am, sharing a bag of candy corn he took off Max and laughing while looking at the stars and moon.
- Jonathan Byers -
Tumblr media
⥂  It was Nancy’s idea to go on the hayride. Since she was your friend and you knew she wouldn’t leave you alone, you agreed. You warned her that you weren’t there for the jump scares and the bullshit, but she just kind of gave that mysterious shrug and told you “Trust me. You’ll be glad you came tonight.”
-- She wasn’t lying either. When she showed up with Steve and you realized that Jonathan apparently wasn’t her date for the night, you were secretly jumping for joy. When it became clear that she was playing matchmaker, you were intrigued by it.
⥂ “If you get scared, I’m right here.” His breath was warm against your ear, it smelled like the cocoa you’d all four been drinking in copious amounts to keep warm while you waited on the ride to start. You smiled at him and tried to play it cool.
-- Tried until a hockey masked person came running out of the woods with one of those cheap prop axes raised over their heads. You wound up burying your face in his chest and swearing about jump scares. He chuckled and his hands rubbed at your back until you calmed down.
⥂  It was a spider that got you sitting in his lap though when the ride started. He tried to find it and kill it, but when you’d swatted it away, you sent it scattering for parts unknown. “My hero.” you teased, making him give you that cute little grin.
⥂  Steve and Nancy deserted ya’ll to go to a haunted house in town at the end of the ride. You and Jonathan wound up riding around until at least 12. Then you wound up back at the Byers house, cozied up on the couch together with Will and Mike and Eleven, watching some horror movie marathon while sharing candy.
- Steve Harrington -
Tumblr media
⥂ What could go wrong doing a corn maze with Steve and Robin and the Party, right? Well..
-- First of all, it was a HAUNTED corn maze. Yeah.. with clowns and ghosts and illusions and jump scares. Before you’d even gotten into the maze fully, you were practically climbing Steve like a goddamn tree because a giant mechanical spider came racing right for your ankles. Steve just laughed and let you wrap around him and hide your face. “It’s not even that scary, babe.” he was trying to comfort you, smoothing those hands over your hair. Robin was giggling and both Dustin and Mike agreed that you had “one hell of a scream.” because of course, the party all ran off ahead of you and Robin and Steve. When you looked up from the little moment, Robin was giving you a wink and you quickly realized what your best friend was up to.
⥂ You got to see Steve’s lightning quick reflexes in action and you came away with no doubt in your mind that if you were ever in danger, he’d do everything in his power to keep you safe. A person dressed as a zombie chased you guys at one point and he picked you up, taking off at a run, laughing the whole time.
⥂  Things wrapped up with Steve going around and dropping off all the kiddos and then letting Robin out at her girlfriends. You two had to help her sneak up to said girlfriend’s dorm room. Then, to your susrprise, he grabbed hold of your hand and looked you in the eyes. “I had a good time tonight.. Do you wanna ride around? Maybe split some of this candy Dustin gave me?”
-- Of course you said yes. You two wound up driving around. Stopping at a diner in town because it was still open and they had what Steve claimed was the best hot cocoa.

it took a minute but now I finally have put together my headcanons for Nancy and Kali, aka the power couple that deserves more love then they get, so please enjoy this mess
the first time they meet is when the Byers/Hopper family is invited over to dinner at the Wheeler’s; Nancy is kind of curious to meet the new sister who Mike said was “scary beyond all reason”, and finds herself oddly intrigued by this girl with her heavy boots, wild hair and sharp eyes that gave away to all the dark she’s seen; Kali isn’t all that interested until she lays eyes on Nancy and sees just how completely beautiful she is, totally throwing her off to the point where she can’t even approach her; Nancy tries to do it herself, all smiles with a hand outstretched, but Kali barely makes a reply back before she slips away and avoids Nancy like the plague, and Nancy mopes with the thoughts of what the hell she possibly did; it becomes more helpful for Kali though, when she finds out that she’s this good-girl, straight-A type, with her patient smiles and primed skirts, she can just roll her eyes at another push-over cookie-cut out.
until, Jonathan tells her that it was Nancy who helped him trap the monster that took Will, that she cut open her palm and wielded that gun like it was no one’s business, and then when Barb’s death still wasn’t laid to rest, went on an all-out man hunt for the men responsible for it and pretty much toppled the Hawkins’s Lab by exposing them all, and then goddammit she’s really fucked now because not only is this girl beautiful, smart, but also a complete badass who went out and exposed corrupt gov men and made them bend to her doing and now she’s so fucking screwed christ shit –
Nancy still hasn’t given up on the idea of Kali either; she gets some info from El during their tutoring sessions, where El dispels her visit (minus more ugly details) and how Kali took down men who were responsible for all these wrongdoings and god, Nancy is much more interested now, and makes it a mission to get Kali to like her.
Kali continues running circles around Nancy because she’d rather just keep avoiding then addressing her feelings, ignoring every approach except the ones she can’t, where she just throws sarcastic remarks and low smirks at Nancy just to see the bright girl get all huffy; but Nancy rises to the challenge and hits back with her own remarks; and El watches these interactions, trying to figure out if it’s fighting or not.
it keeps escalating until Nancy just flat-out gets fed up and confronts Kali, demanding to know why she doesn’t like her, prompting a full-out fight; there’s shouting and verbal digs, Kali yelling that Nancy’s too annoying for her own good and Nancy tells her off for acting like she was too cool for anyone, all until one of them grabs the other and then whoops they’re kissing.
“Maybe I don’t hate you..” Kali will confess afterwards “Actually, I think your zero tolerance for mistreatment, for..bullshit, is pretty cool..” “Cool.” Nancy will smile “Me too.” and this time they both smile into the kiss.
they can’t really tell anyone, but the Byers family, being the infinitely kind people they are, are pretty cool with it and let the couple use the house as a safe space, and Hopper can’t really pretend like he has any control over what Kali does anyway, and El is just ecstatic that her big sister figures like each other so much.
they like to go down to the drugstore and just spend hours in the make-up isle, picking out individual items for one other and colours they think will suit the other (sometimes they take El and Max too, and occasionally Will so him and El can paint each other’s nails later).
Kali is a pack rat, and a bit of a thief; she just likes to steal Nancy’s sweaters and shirts to hoard, and slowly Nancy notices her clothes just straight up start to go missing and wonders what the hell is going on until she visits her girlfriend and finds all her things she thought she lost just strewn everywhere amongst Kali and El’s room.
even though Kali isn’t really all that upset about it, Nancy is still sad that she’s missed out on practically every cheesy relationship staple, like dances and Valentine’s dates, so she decides to go all out even though Kali keeps telling her she doesn’t have to (in fact, she’d rather she wouldn’t, but Nancy doesn’t listen); instead she takes her to drive-in movie dates and lives it up for Valentines with the roses and chocolates and every cliché under the sun; one date in particular, where Kali’s only instruction is to show up at the Wheeler house dressed her very best, she walks into the basement later to find Nancy has completely decked it out, with fairy lights strung everywhere and quiet, smaltzy music playing off a nearby record player, and there is Nancy in her petite, knee high pink dress grinning up at her in excitement (“you never had the school dance experience, so I thought we’d do a little reenactment..”); Nancy teaches her how slow dance, the night full of stepped-on-toes and low laughter (“so tell me Nancy Wheeler, how do you dance at a school event?” “Well first, you have to have really clammy hands and we have to be too nervous to stand within more then a foot of one another..”); Kali will pretend to complain about it all and roll her eyes till the cows come home but she’s falling more and more in love with Nancy every time she does it and shows just how big her heart is.
both Wheeler siblings are actually trying to do all they can to make it up to their girlfriends for what they missed; Hopper is still skeptical about letting El out on her own, so Kali often gets stuck having to watch over her on her dates with Mike, so Nancy comes along to keep her company; usually this just accumulates into watching over for some time and then going to make out in the car, but when Mike wants to take El for her first time to the fair, Nancy is jumping at the chance to take Kali too; they chaperon their siblings and their friends for most of the night, but then later Nancy drags Kali onto the ferris wheel so they can see the lights over the city, and while they snuggle up on the ride, Kali still complains about how cheesy it is and that it’s cold up here anyway so Nancy just cuts her off with a kiss, and, well, it really wasn’t that bad..
they also have a competition at the stall with the fake guns and targets, spending all their tokens seeing who could shoot the 100 bullseye; Nancy ends up winning and Kali grumbles, taking the giant, 6 foot teddy bear with a red face, which she later gives to a delighted El.
they have joking arguments in defense of their siblings against the other’s (“I’m sorry, what’s wrong with my baby brother?!” “Nothing, other then the fact that I once saw him trip over his own shoelaces three different times within the span of twenty minutes.” “Mike told me El lost at Monopoly the other day and nearly threw her piece into Dustin’s eye.”), but they both know that Nancy loves El like she was her very own little sister and Kali has never seen someone care as deeply about another as Mike does towards El.
also occasionally stealing their siblings radios to talk in the middle of the night, whispers and quiet grins.
they don’t really do pet names, although Nancy likes to pretend to use them just to get a rise out of Kali (“sweet cheeks?” “Wheeler..” “Honey darling?” “STOP IT.”); but Kali does like to call Nancy her sharpshooter, usually accompanied with a fond grin, and she can’t help but love it.
since she didn’t get to go to school, Nancy also offers up her tutoring services to give Kali what she couldn’t learn off of stolen public library books; she’s a fast learner and enjoys it, but half the time she’s throwing flirty remarks at Nancy and trying to slide her hand under her skirt, which just leads them to making out on the bed, so Nancy starts lumping her lessons in with El’s so Kali can actually retain something and that so she’s not leaving trying to cover up hickies (she is, though, forced to watch their sibling bickering with her head in her hands as Kali calls El a teacher’s pet for being eager to answer first and El saying the only reason Kali doesn’t know it is because she’s too busy making puppy eyes at Nancy, forcing her to literally have to pull them apart sometimes).
in return of the favour, Kali teaches Nancy how to properly fight (”you can’t rely on those vast gun skills all the time..”) which she picked up from her time on the streets; it goes well and Nancy proves again how scrappy she was, until she over-exerts herself and ends up giving Kali a blackeye, ending up with a mess of her nearly crying and Kali trying to let her down by telling her I’m fine Nance, christ, just stop crying, it’s just bruising –, despite the fact that she can’t really open her left eye now and it takes Nancy about a week of convincing afterwards to step back up to the plate (but she does master it and they do have good practices, though it doesn’t take long for these mock fights to get heated fast that then escalate onto other things).
Kali doesn’t talk about it much but Nancy knows she’s not as indestructible as she considers herself to be, and on those times when trauma is at it’s worst and Kali can barely get out of bed or eat or really do anything but sleep, Nancy is there right away; Kali often refuses to let her see her in this stage but Nancy worms her way in anyway, armed with her mother’s homemade soup and kind touches as Kali sinks her heavy body into Nancy’s welcoming side.
it isn’t just then either, Nancy sees Kali has a hard time opening up, risking herself when she has walls down, even when she knows the other person has no ill intentions; despite her nature of wandering hands and sultry promises whispered in Nancy’s ear, she was actually fairly nervous in being open like that, vulnerable in her bare skin and the many scars she bore, whispering that she’d hate for anyone to pity her when they saw the physical marks of what she’d been through; Nancy traces over every deep burn and jagged line and smiles gently and says that she could never – “pity you? The strongest and most powerful person I know? No way..” “No way…?” “No. They aren’t pity marks, I think..they show how strong you are..” – and god, Kali just loves her more for it.
and Kali returns it, listening as Nancy curls into her side, holding her close and gently playing with her hair, and she tells her all about Barb, about their countless sleepovers and how smart she was and all the colleges she planned on applying to and when her 10-year-old self spilled spoiled milk into Andrea Davis’s backpack because she made fun of Barb’s freckles and bright hair enough to make her cry (“so you were always a badass then..?”) and when she helped Nancy make a secret valentine for her crush in 7th grade and giggled as they watched him open it from afar; “she sounds like she was really cool..” “yeah..” Nancy smiled even though her lips trembled “..she would’ve thought you were crazy though..”; that at least they can laugh now but Nancy’s still trying not to cry as Kali carefully swipes the tears out from under her eyes, because she knows just as good as anyone what it’s like to feel crushed under the great weight of losing someone.
Kali knows the issues Nancy has with her parents, so sometimes she just likes to mess with them for their collective amusement (because sometimes even she’s amazed two people can be so incredibly disengaged); Karen is always kind and invites her to dinner along with El, but Kali can still see the eyebrow raises and odd looks she gives to this girl with her leather jackets and half-shaved head and stand-offish ways; and Kali loves to just live it up sometimes, exaggerating stories of her heathen lifestyle in Chicago all while smiling nicely, grinning more at how pale the suburban, soccer mom gets, and at Nancy who’s trying to swallow her laughter by drinking her Pepsi.
it’s Ted who’s even worse and Kali is sure the man wouldn’t even know it if there was an earth quake happening around him; it’s him she likes to mess with the most, grinning as she makes his Laz-y Boy disappear before his very eyes and he fumbles about trying to figure out where the hell it went, or think the t.v isn’t turning on because all he can see is a black screen when in reality he’s just turning it on and off and yelling that the stupid thing isn’t working again, or making him see thousands of anti-Reagan signs planted on the lawn; all this to the point where he’s screaming to Karen that he must be losing his mind, and Kali’s smirking and Nancy’s grinning with a hand over her mouth, leaning into her side with shoulders shaking because she’s laughing so hard.
much like El, Kali doesn’t show much, but Nancy loves it on those rare occasions when she lights up with a smile; but it doesn’t happen as much as she’d like, so Nancy starts doing whatever she can to get a laugh or a smile from her, like goofy dances along to the hits on the radio or telling terrible jokes or kissing her on the nose/top of head; Kali usually just gives her her signature pointed look with a raised eyebrow, but every now and then she’ll break and she’ll grin away and it makes Nancy’s whole heart feel light.
Kali has severe short-person-complex, and is always low-key pissed that Nancy is taller, pretending like it didn’t even matter because it was only about three inches anyway; however Nancy brings this up whenever possible, making a show of pushing Kali out of the way to reach something from the cupboard because she can’t reach it from her height, and demanding that she has to be the big spoon all the time, just to watch Kali get super flustered and angry over it, making threats that Nancy was going to pay for these jokes later (but never actually fulfilling them).
Kali knows full and well that Nancy can take care of herself, a fact she loves, it still doesn’t mean anyone can go around trying to insult her girl; like when Nancy hounds Mr. Simpson that they need to have authors like Woolf and Plath added to the lessons, and when he dismisses her by saying that they needn’t be bothered with that “unimportant frilly, girly stuff” and Nancy tells him what made droning on about all these supposed great male author’s sad attempts to woo women so crucial for them to learn, she’s sent to the principal’s office and has to do detention as a lesson for “speaking out of place”, of which Kali catches wind of, so when Nancy comes in the next day, she finds both the principal’s office and Simpson’s car sprayed entirely with hot pink paint (“how..I mean how did –” “I have to have some secrets Wheeler..”)
on that respect, Nancy is also ready to throw down the second anyone tries to insult Kali; 1980’s small town Indiana isn’t the most diverse place of course, so it’s not uncommon that when they’re out and about, people will pass by them and hiss unpleasantries under their breath about dark skin and going back to your own country; Kali could easily make them regret it, but it’s always Nancy who whips around first with a stone voice asking them speak up because she couldn’t her what they said, tugging them back when they tried to slink away, “oh no, I’m sure it was really important, please tell us”, until they’re ducking their heads and muttering an apology as they skulk away, Kali grinning at her; it never really gets violent until one day when they go to the regular fast-food joint and when trying to order, the guy behind the counter looks Kali dead on and says, with words condescendingly slowed down like he was speaking to a toddler, that they don’t serve people like her who probably couldn’t even read the words off the menu anyway, and then, an hour later, it’s Kali who has to explain to Hopper why there’s a man with a broken nose and a very disgruntled Nancy Wheeler with bruised knuckles sitting in his office.
kissing the other when they’re mid-rant; when Nancy’s on about how this is all bullshit and this is too, or Kali’s deep in talk of this injustice verses the next, one will just straight up kiss the other, if nothing for pure amusement, but also because their girl is utterly attractive when storming with her righteous anger.
in a way, Kali represents all the freedom and exhilarence Nancy wishes she could make a part of herself; they both know she’s not built for small-town confinements (”if I turn out like my mom, I want somebody to shoot me.” “you are not your mother Nancy Wheeler; a brain that sharp and a heart that fierce can’t be as ignorantly unaware.”), so Kali takes her hand and says she has a car and no ropes to tie her down, and Nancy quickly jumps on that; they drive and drive, passing over state lines and create adventures of their own, with the wind whistling through Nancy’s short hair when she leans out the window and screaming along to cassette tape after cassette tape; they drive to the beach edges at sunset and Kali sneaks them over the chain-link gates to music shows, and these become Nancy’s favourite memories (she also the sap who keeps the seashells they found and the “greetings from _!” postcards of the various states); they talk and talk and Nancy loves to hear about all the ways Kali sees the world and the many turbulent stories of her reckless youth, which are very different to hers and make her kind of grateful for her after school piano lessons and family dinners, though not in a pitiful way; how she’s so wild and free and unbelievably herself that for once Nancy feels like the burden of trying to reach perfect standards lifts from her shoulders; that around her, she doesn’t have to be the perfect daughter or sister or get the best grades because Kali couldn’t care if she got the highest GPA or flunked to the bottom, because she loves her just as, and with her, Nancy can be just that - just as; just Nancy Wheeler, free to mold herself however she wants and Kali was going to call her brilliant everytime.
and for Kali, Nancy represents the gentle love and something steady; she might be a whirlwind herself but her life has been nothing if not a mess she was still desperately trying to patch together; so even if they like to run wild, she finds she likes the slow moments just as much; like when Nancy is showing her how to make the special Wheeler chocolate chip cookie recipe and her words are patient and the lights are soft and the whole kitchen smells sweet, Kali’s too busy watching Nancy fold the dough and tuck back her hair repeatedly and she’s smiling before she knows it, later moving towards laughter when Nancy tries to flick dough onto her cheek; when they cuddle up for movie night with just so many fluffy blankets, and Nancy is pretending not to be scared by the slasher movie Kali picked out, but her startled peeps are adorable, and it’s actually her that falls asleep first, because it was impossible not to with the warm body next to her and the light trace of the vanilla lotion Nancy wears and a sense of security that she’s never felt; ‘cause Kali’s had love, ones that were consuming and storming and that shook her to her core but this is new territory to her, sweetness and gentle touches; she’s never had a love that stood by so steadily and really cared without expecting something in return for it, and with it, Kali finds falling in love with Nancy Wheeler is one of the easiest and loveliest things she’s ever done, so simple she doesn’t even notice she’s standing in the middle of it until she’s watching her smile and realizing all the things she’d lay down for this one girl.
they both are really different, but somehow the very same too, and that makes it as weird as it does wonderful, finding, within their powerful storms and bright sparks, a welcoming home.
