This is in no way exclusive to Superhero media. but one of the things I notice the most from that side of things is that there is this almost universal sense of confusion as to "why do [X]? Mainstream audiences never heard of [X]". whenever any non-top-tier character is given the spotlight.

Like, for all the problems "Marvel's The Avengers" had, "Have the most succesful new character we have had in a decade, who we also have been expanding to other media be the main character" is like, at the bottom of the list.
