"Who will be my new master, though, sensei?" you inquire, unable to contain your curiosity. Your sensei names a person that you frankly didn't even think was real. "The Ancient One, of course." The sound of approaching footsteps shattered the quiet, the floorboards creaking under a calm gait, jolting her frozen heart back into beating, and her body into responding.

She found what she sought, as shaking fingers closed around the little pistol tucked between her ledger of shipments and her spare aprons, fumbling it as she scrambled back behind the bar, the weapon raised and her other hand wrapped protectively around her belly, just as a darkened figure appeared around the counter.

Their eyes locked, before her own widened, but she didn’t lower the pistol, too shocked to react as she stared into the ones whose colour had begun to fade from her memory, but that found her now, sharpened steel where they seized hers, huddled behind the bar, the barrel of the pistol still aimed at him.

He had his sword drawn―Makino had never seen him draw it, and even seeing him, there was a full beat where it didn’t fully register just who she was looking at.

Her eyes went to the kerchief around the hilt, the one she’d lost, but realisation was slow in hitting her, that he was the one who’d taken out the raiders, and even then it didn’t fully sink in, that he was there―that he was in her bar, not miles away on a different sea, and his promised return still years away. He was―

A big hand touched the barrel of the pistol gently, and she started, finding him kneeling in front of her, his sword sheathed so fast she hadn’t even caught it. His cloak draped from his wide shoulders like the shadows behind the counter, the dark rendering him momentarily unrecognisable, and her breath hitched as her fingers tightened around the pistol.

Shanks didn’t flinch, and the gentle brush of rough, familiar fingers against hers made her instinctively loosen her white-knuckled grip on the pistol, as he calmly took it from her trembling hand.

Makino watched as he put it atop the counter, still not convinced that what she was seeing was real, that it wasn’t just a very vivid dream that her mind had spun to life from her longing, a nightmare rescued by the thought of him, but upon waking, reality would be just as lonely, and her bed just as cold as it had been without him.

He’d just put the pistol away when his eyes lowered to look at her, as if to check that she wasn’t hurt, when he froze.

His eyes were fixed on her belly under her hand, the pronounced curve highlighted by the high waist of her nightgown. The seriousness from before was gone from his face, his handsome features slackened with shock, leaving such an open expression, Makino could have read his thoughts right off it.

Still cowering behind the bar, her hand wrapped protectively around her stomach where their unborn child was kicking furiously, she couldn’t muster her voice to speak.

“Garp called,” Shanks said then. His voice seized her breath, nearly dragging a sob from her lips, but then it was the first time she’d heard it in months, although the roughness in it scraped it clean of the good humour she remembered. His eyes were still fastened on her belly. “He said you needed to talk to me.”

Still reeling from everything that had happened, and dizzy from fear and adrenaline, Makino could only stare at him.

Footsteps sounded on her porch then, a quick, fleeting gait, before a familiar voice called in, “Finished sweeping the village, Boss! Did you find her?”

Yasopp’s face appeared above the counter, a grin lifting his mouth at the sight of them. “Behind the bar already? Jesus, guys, we haven’t even been back ten minutes and you’re already mid-reunion. I know it’s been seven months but you know there’s a pirate raid—”

His smile fell, and Makino watched as those keen eyes did an almost comical drop downwards, to her belly where she cradled it in her hand.

She watched as they widened, although where she might have expected a smart-assed reply, when he opened his mouth, nothing came out.

For his part, Shanks didn’t have anything more articulate to offer.

“Boss?”

Lucky’s voice reached them from outside, followed by the bat-wing doors swinging before he appeared next to Yasopp, along with Ben, and if she hadn’t been so terrified, Makino might have found it a little funny, watching their reactions play out across their faces, Lucky’s eyes rounding behind his glasses, and the slack line of Ben’s mouth, the most animated she’d ever seen it.

She was searching for something to say when thundering footsteps across her porch beat her to it, their voices rushing across her floorboards like the tide as the doors swung open loudly, the sound she’d longed for so fiercely, it took her breath now, but she was barely allowed the chance to realise that they’d come back to her before they were all there, their faces appearing above the counter and their grins brightening at the sight of her.

“Makino!”

“You’re okay!”

“We saw the fire coming in, but it looks like we got here in time!”

“Cleared out the raiders, too!”

“Are you―”

The speaker stopped, and she didn’t need to see his eyes lowering to know what had done it. And it was like a collective realisation, as all their gazes seemed to simultaneously zero in on the same thing.

Suddenly aware of herself, she shifted. And while it wasn’t the first time they’d seen her in nothing but her nightdress, it wasn’t her state of undress that made her self-conscious now, her hand cupped under the weight of her belly, although it wasn’t like there was anywhere to hide it.

Shanks hadn’t taken his eyes off it, and all her months of worrying about his reaction all came rushing back, the long weeks where she’d thought about how she would tell him, and how he might respond, every single alternative inspected carefully from all angles—anger and disappointment, and the one she’d barely dared hope for, happiness—and yet faced with it now, Makino had no idea what to brace for.

Beneath her palms, the baby was kicking. And she managed to locate her elusive voice, although heard how it shivered,

“What did Garp tell you, exactly?”
