Well, I have seen the new Star War. I know everyone and their dog has Big Opinions about it so nobody is obliged to read about mine but here they are under a cut.
Negatives:
- Overall, didn’t love it. Didn’t dislike it as much as TLJ, it had a couple of good moments but I was overall bugged by how fast and incoherent everything was. No scene lasted for more than 30 seconds; it felt like an exhausting, pointless gallop.
- The acting and dialogue were... quite bad? Maybe I’m too affectionate towards TFA but that movie felt like it had wit and zing and some subtlety. Everything in TROS felt like it was a beat too late and totally flat. There were so many callbacks to previous dialogue it felt more like a mashup/montage than its own film.
- WHY do they just keep adding more characters instead of actually doing something with the ones they’ve established?* General Pryde WHOMST? Why give Finn a new side-story with yer wan the ex-trooper rather than have him develop his relationship with Rose (and give Rose something to do other than stand around at rebel base frowning in consternation)? Fuck all the way off with random bounty-hunter who is one minute ‘I hate you Poe, you betrayed us’ and the next ‘anyways here have this precious macguffin and also here is some Forced Hetero Flirting.’
- I’m predictably mad about Hux’s death, it was just as anticlimactic and played for laughs as I feared it would be. I guess I’ll just never get over how the potential of that character in TFA was so squandered by the next two films. Sidebar: you will never get me to believe that the Hux of TFA would betray the First Order because of his animosity towards Kylo.
[LOOK, I get that the main theme of this was the relationship between generations. The older generation of rebels hand over to the younger one - they say ‘we can help but this is your fight and your future’, whereas the Empire just cannibalises its young (the First Order were just a placeholder for the Empire’s inevitable resurgence). I get that’s the intended lesson (with obvious parallels in modern politics), but still! I can’t help wishing that Pryde wasn’t there at all; that Hux actually had a prominent role and something meaningful could be made of his and Kylo’s power struggle. It just feels like such a missed opportunity to me. I guess this was impossible given how the movies were made, but I really would have liked to see characters and ideas properly developed, things that happened in TFA capitalised on, and not just this throwing in more and more characters and cutting 90% of plot arcs short with no resolution.]
- Man, the Knights of Ren didn’t even get to do anything cool! They just searched a village and then sucked and died.
- No triumphant return of Captain Phasma :(
Positives:
- LANDO!!!!
- Holy shit, Palpatine is fucking terrifying. I loved that strobe affect where his face kept changing between flickers
- I would die for Babu Frik.
- D-O: ‘NO THANK-YOU.’ I feel u bud.
- Adam Driver’s gently trembling face
- The maddeningly tender homoeroticism of Finn giving Poe a leg up onto a rock
- Rey calling Leia ‘master’
- Kylo saying OW
- Force-sensitive Finn CONFIRMED
- Jedistormpilot OT3 HUG!!!!
*I know the answer to this question is to sell more action figures, duh.
