scandalous beauty: josephine baker - an analysis
“Surely the day will come when color means nothing more than the skin tone, when religion is seen uniquely as a way to speak one's soul, when birth places have the weight of a throw of the dice and all men are born free, when understanding breeds love and brotherhood.” - Josephine Baker
She was an American-born French entertainer, French Resistance agent, and civil rights activist. Her career was centered primarily in Europe, mostly in her adopted France. She was the first black woman to star in a major motion picture, the 1927 silent film Siren of the Tropics. And late last year, she became the first black woman honoured in the Panthéon in Paris. Before she had all these accolades and firsts, Josephine Baker was just another singer, dancer, and entertainer. Frustrated and fed up by the discrimination she experienced in America, she fled to France and hit it big. At her peak of popularity, Josephine rivaled actresses Gloria Swanson and Mary Pickford as the most photographed woman in the world, and by the time her first film hit, she earned more than any entertainer in Europe. She was a symbol of the vitality and beauty of African-American culture in France during the '20s. She ardently fought against the rise of fascism in Europe and was one of the main figures speaking against racism in the United States in the '50s and '60s. Ernest Hemingway called her "the most sensational woman anyone ever saw". Dubbed the "Black Venus", the "Black Pearl", the "Bronze Venus", and the "Creole Goddess", she was and still is an inspiration for black and other entertainers and showgirls everywhere.
Tumblr media
Josephine Baker, according to astrotheme, was a Gemini sun and Libra moon. She was born Freda Josephine McDonald in St. Louis, Missouri. Her mother Carrie, was adopted in Little Rock, Arkansas, in 1886 by Richard and Elvira McDonald, both of whom were former slaves of African and Native American descent. The identity of her father is disputed; some sources identify vaudeville drummer Eddie Carson as her natural father, whilst other sources dispute this. Baker's foster son later concluded that Baker's father was white, and that Baker knew that Carson was not her father. Baker grew up fatherless and in poverty. Her parents, both entertainers, performed throughout the segregated Midwest often bringing her on stage during their shows. Unfortunately, their careers never took off, forcing the young Baker to look for odd jobs to survive. She was poorly dressed, hungry as a child, and developed street smarts playing in the railroad yards of Union Station. Between the ages of 8 and 10 she was out of school, helping to support her family. She took in laundry to wash to make ends meet, and at eight years old, Josephine began working as a live-in domestic for white families in St. Louis. One woman abused her, burning Josephine's hands when the young girl put too much soap in the laundry. By age 12, she had dropped out of school. At 13, ran away from home and worked as a waitress, living as a street child in the slums of St. Louis, sleeping in cardboard shelters, scavenging for food in garbage cans. She also married during this time, taking her husband’s last name and dropping her first name, becoming Josephine Baker. In her teen years she struggled to have a healthy relationship with her mother, who did not want her to become an entertainer and scolded her for not tending to her second husband, William Howard Baker, whom she married in 1921 at the age of 15.
If she was unable to find work she would often dance on the streets, collecting money from onlookers. Eventually, her routine caught the attention of an African American theatre troupe. As an adolescent she became a dancer, touring at 16 with a dance troupe from Philadelphia. In 1923 she joined the chorus in a road company performing the musical comedy Shuffle Along and then moved to New York City, where she advanced steadily through the show Chocolate Dandies on Broadway and the floor show of the Plantation Club. Baker flourished as a dancer in several vaudeville shows. She eventually moved to New York City and participated in the celebration of black life and art now known as the Harlem Renaissance. A few years later her success took her to Paris. Baker became one of the most sought-after performers due to her distinct dancing style and unique costumes. Although her audiences were mostly white, Baker’s performances followed African themes and style. In her famed show Danse Sauvage she danced across stage in a banana skirt. Baker was multi talented, known for her dancing and singing she even played in several successful major motion pictures released in Europe. In later shows in Paris, she was often accompanied on stage by her pet cheetah "Chiquita," who was adorned with a diamond collar. The cheetah frequently escaped into the orchestra pit, where it terrorized the musicians, adding another element of excitement to the show.
Although she was married four times, Baker was bisexual. Speculation exists that Baker was also involved in sexual liaisons, if not relationships, with entertainer Ada "Bricktop" Smith, French novelist Colette, and possibly Frida Kahlo. Unable to have children herself, During her participation in the Civil Rights Movement, Baker began to adopt children, forming a family which she often referred to as "The Rainbow Tribe". Baker wanted to prove that "children of different ethnicities and religions could still be brothers". She often took the children with her cross-country, and when they were at Château des Milandes, she arranged tours so visitors could walk the grounds and see how natural and happy the children were in "The Rainbow Tribe". She adopted two girls and 10 boys from various countries. In 1968, Baker lost her château owing to unpaid debts; afterwards Princess Grace of Monaco offered her an apartment in Monaco. In 1975, Baker starred in a retrospective revue at the Bobino in Paris, Joséphine à Bobino 1975, celebrating her 50 years in show business. The revue, financed by Prince Rainier, Princess Grace, and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, opened to rave reviews. Days after this performance at the age of 68, she died of a cerebral hemorrhage. The only American-born woman to receive full French military honours at her funeral, Baker's funeral was the occasion of a huge procession; 20,000 mourners attended.
Ironically, Baker forced one of her sons to leave the château and live with his adoptive father, Jo Bouillon, in Argentina, at the age of 15, after discovering that he was gay. Another son died of cancer in 1999, and another was diagnosed with schizophrenia and is in a psychiatric hospital as of 2009. In 2015, Jean-Claude Baker, author of his adoptive mother’s biography, committed suicide.
Next, I’ll cover a very controversial actor; one who, for better or worse, increased the visibility of African-Americans in film: another Gemini, Stepin Fetchit.

Overall personality snapshot: Highly civilized, charming and persuasive with a deep desire for justice, she seemed to be one of those enviably suave and confidently easy-going people who breezes through life without a care. And yet, if she looked underneath the surface polish, she often grappled with some awkward questions. When she got her act together she could be a master of diplomacy and the ‘middle way’. Just as she could usually solve her own inner conflicts with insight and clever thinking, so her breezy charm and humour, her gift for the soothing phrase and her obvious impartiality and integrity could disarm most opponents and bring understanding between bitter enemies. Although she was strongly idealistic and deeply concerned with furthering individual and social justice, she was not as altruistic as she may have appeared to be. She was likely to be well aware of her own worth, and demanded the respect and loyalty she felt she deserved. In fact, she was quite shrewd and could figure out complex situations quicker than others could, which enabled her to adjust to people and events, and to place herself advantageously. Her ambition was an adaptable and unobtrusive kind. If she was honest with herself, however, she would have liked a little bit of spotlight and challenge, and she used her a valuable counterbalance to her ever-obliging tendency to say ‘yes’ and to want to see the other person’s viewpoint, which could, if left unchecked, leave her without a life of her own.
Her appreciation of beauty and justice could have attracted her to work in areas such as the law and politics, but also to conciliation, arbitration and counseling. She was, in fact, suited to any area in which she could deploy her objectivity and her desire to connect with people and learn from many views. She also needed to use her mercurial skills for analysis, quick thinking, writing and communicating. This made her a natural negotiator and go-between. She especially enjoyed anything that involved travel, for she loved the stimulation of new faces, new landscapes and other perspectives. But she was also an explorer of ideas, and may gravitate towards scientific inquiry and information, and communication science. On the other hand, her deep appreciation of beauty drew her to the arts. Whatever the field of her work, she had a natural gift for teaching and inspiring others. She readily expressed her enthusiasm for her chosen subject. Quick to see the possibilities in things, she was good in any business that depended upon keeping alert to changing tastes and fashions. Her verbal gifts made her a natural salesperson, and she especially flourished in any area that brought her into touch with people and kept her stimulated with new ideas.
Her body was neat and wiry, and she used neat and economical movements. Her well-groomed appearance was mirrored in her cool and classic way of dressing, good posture, fine bone structure and animated expression. Physically, she possessed good stamina. She tended to look younger than she really was, all the way through into her later years. Collecting knowledge and communicating played a great part in her life, because she needed mental stimulation. Her clear logical mind loved to debate, although her opinions were changeable. She was intensely curious and had good reasoning powers. She was a talker. At her worst, she was prone to ceaseless chatter and was more talk than action. She sought knowledge but was easily attracted by anything new and interesting on the horizon. It was very important for her to know that she had the security of a guaranteed pay check coming in regularly. Although she enjoyed working outdoors, she would have been tempted to take an indoors office job for the security it offered. In either case, she tended to express her artistic side in a conventional fashion, rather than in a more radical way. She was a mentally restless person, both versatile and broad-minded. She experienced personal growth through analysis and using her intellect, although the collection and communication of facts may have been an end within itself.
It was often difficult for her to maintain her self-confidence and optimism, and she was easily discouraged. However, she was academically ambitious and very intelligent. She felt that there was no problem that couldn’t be resolved, as long as she was sufficiently informed. Although she was popular, periods of seclusion were necessary for her. She always tried to make sure that she was acting for the noblest of motives, and she had a tendency to moralize at times. She may have liked to associate with older and more experienced people, and she herself had an air of dignity and gravity to her. She belonged to a generation with a practical and materialistic frame of mind, and which was critical of standards of religion and government. As a member of this generation, she could be idealistic and zealous, even aggressive, if she was following a cause, and she welcomed change and progress. Flashes of inspiration caused her to investigate new and more exciting ways of doing things. As a member of this generation, she tried to restore order where chaos and injustice ruled, although sometimes her aims and objectives were misunderstood. Changes were also experienced in the relationships between parents and children, with the ties becoming looser. Was part of a generation known for its devastating social upheavals concerning home and family. The whole general pattern of family life experiences enormous changes and upheavals; as a Cancer Plutonian, this aspect is highlighted with Baker not knowing for sure who her father was, let alone having her father in her life, as well as her motivations behind adopting her “rainbow tribe”.
Love/sex life: She was the luckiest of the Gemini Martian lovers. Not only was she supremely knowledgeable about sex and a cool master of all the games associated with flirtation and love but she also had an emotional sensitivity, a quality of vulnerability and a capacity of empathy that added up to devastating sex appeal. This made her a lover who was very much in demand and, if she was so inclined, gave her almost unlimited access to recreational sex. Unfortunately, this combination of an intellectual approach to passion and a passionate approach to sex also made her a very unpredictable, irrational and complex lover; so complex, in fact, that even she couldn’t be sure what it is she really wanted. Her problem was that there were moments when sex was just a game to her, a game that she knew very well, and then there were other times when she responded to her partner with an emotional need that was over-whelming and completely beyond her rational control. There were moments when she seemed cold-hearted and manipulative and other times when her need for her lover was so immediate and visceral that it almost became an obsession. At her best, she learned how to combine her strengths and use her smooth, Martian skill to find and hold the emotional security she so desperately needed. At her worst she remained the glib and skillful player who won at every romantic game except the one that counted. Baker rose to fame in Paris in the 1920s and 30s because of her unique combination of athleticism, sexiness and comedy. She loved many men, quite often very rich men, but none of her infatuations matched her love for her adopted country, France, and for the numerous children of all races she adopted into her “rainbow tribe.”
minor asteroids and points:
North Node: Leo
Lilith: Gemini
Vertex: Capricorn
Fortune: Capricorn
East Point: Leo
Her North Node in Leo dictated that she needed to downplay her more anarchic and unpredictable aspects and turn her attention to developing her personal authority and allowing herself to show more warmth. Her Lilith in Gemini ensured ensured that she was a wolf, not a sheep, and proud of it. She was perfectly capable of flirting, cajoling, writing and talking her way to the top. Earnest people terrified her because she was scared that their plodding worthiness might dull the wits that she needed to survive. Her Vertex in Capricorn, 5th house indicated in her a searing need for her partner to understand and respect the trials and tribulations she’d long endured, as well as the misunderstandings from others she encountered throughout her life. Her ultimate union had elements of societal status and power, but she’d wield it in a way that has always been denied to her. If her partner met these needs, the sex was beyond anything ever imagined possible. She had a highly attuned sensitivity, particularly in social situations. She needed someone to always stand behind her through thick and thin in the role of the good and loving authoritative parent she never had. She had a childlike orientation, in all of its manifestations, toward relationships on an internal level. She had an implicit trust, or perhaps naivete, that was instilled in our childhood persists far into maturity. She had a need for fun, creativity, and excitement in a committed relationship, no matter how many years it has endured. She often have deep fears, typical of children, of abandonment, as well as a need for universal acceptance, no matter how she acted, which she needed her partner to respect and nurture, rather than rebuke, especially in adulthood.
Her Part of Fortune in Capricorn and Part of Spirit in Cancer dictated that his destiny lay in creating practical and long-lasting achievements. Success came through hard work, determination, responsibility and perseverance. Fulfillment came from observing his progress through life and seeing it take a form and structure that will outlive him. His soul’s purpose guided him towards building security in his life, both emotional and material. He felt spiritual connections and the spark of the divine within his home and family. East Point in Leo dictated that she was more likely to initially identify with the need for attention, response, admiration from the world. She was more likely to be personally acting out and expressing her need to be a star. She was the natural actress with tremendous charisma, magnetism and persuasive ability.

Globally aware, she put emphasis on her friends and acquaintances, as well as the influence of groups and societies on her life. This extended to how she manifested her creativity against the background of the community. Her innate curiosity kept her on the move.  She used her rational, intellectual mind to explore and understand her  personal world. She needed to answer the single burning question in her  mind: why? This applied to most facets of her life, from the personal to  the impersonal. This need to know sent her off to foreign countries,  where her need to explore other cultures and traditions ranked high. She  was changeable and often moody. This meant that she was often at odds  with herself—the mind demanding one thing, the heart demanding the  opposite. To someone else, this internal conflict often manifested as  two very different people. At first meeting, she seemed enigmatic, elusive. She needed roots, a place or even a state of mind that he could call her own. She needed a safe harbor, a refuge in which to retreat for solitude. She was generally gentle and kind, unless he was hurt. Then she could become vindictive and sharp-spoken. She was affectionate, passionate, and even possessive at times. She was intuitive and was perhaps even psychic. Experience flowed through her emotionally. She was often moody and always changeable; her interests and social circles shifted constantly. She was emotion distilled into its purest form. She was a discriminating, attractive, thorough, scientific, hygienic, humane, scientific, woman and had the highest standards. Her attention to detail was second to none and she had a deeply penetrative and investigative mind.
Read more about her under the cut.
Josephine Baker was born Freda Josephine McDonald in St. Louis, MO, in 1906 to Carrie McDonald, a laundress, and Eddie Carson, a musician. Her early life hinted at her future career. She first danced for the public on the streets of St. Louis for nickels and dimes. Later she became a chorus girl on the St. Louis stage. At age 15 she married Pullman porter William Howard Baker, but left him when she ran away from St. Louis at age 17, feeling there was too much racial discrimination in the city. She eventually made her way to Paris, France. Her first job in Paris was in "La revue negre". Her next significant job was at the Folies Bergere, where she was a member of the club's all-black revue. It was there, in 1925, that she first performed her famous "banana dance". She quickly became a favorite of the French, and her fame grew, but she had many ups and downs during her career. Although popular in France, during the "Red Scare" era of the 1950s, she was falsely accused of being a Communist and informed that she was no longer welcome in the US (in 1937 she had renounced her American citizenship, utterly disgusted by the blatant and official racism against blacks, and became a French citizen). In 1961 Josephine was awarded the Legion of Honor, France's highest award. In the late 1960s she began having financial difficulties, and stopped performing in 1968. Grace Kelly, who by that time had married Prince Rainier of Monaco and was now known as Princess Grace of Monaco, offered her a home in Monaco when she learned of Josephine's financial problems. At the request of Princess Grace, Josephine performed at Monaco's summer ball in 1974 and was a great success. That same year she staged a week of performances in New York City and called the show "An Evening with Josephine Baker". She had just begun a Paris revue celebrating her half-century on the stage when on April 10, 1975, she was stricken with a cerebral hemorrhage and went into a coma. She died without regaining consciousness. Her funeral was held in Paris, and she was buried in Monaco. (x)

Chapter 2
Nowadays…
After graduation he was able to move to a fabulous place in Queens, without any more instability, without any more worries about unpaid bills and all thanks to his good salary as a teacher when getting the job in the same career in which he was oriented for a better life. However, at night Larry still worked as a nightstand at the New York Museum of Natural History, because after all for his wax, metal and polyurethane friends, he is a hero so to speak.
Larry mentioned: "Follow everything as it was the last time.", walking happily as he toured his workplace.
"Not much has changed, Lawrence. Except for one detail.", Mr. Roosevelt mentioned in his peaceful voice.
Larry frowned in confusion: "I've been out of the museum for over three years due to my studies and I'm not very aware, what is it about?"
The sky razo remained the same, like all the inhabitants, revived by the magic of the table of Ahk, who walked their house going from one place to another, browsing other exhibitions than their own, in themselves continued the consistency of each of the corners of the enclosure in details, also the floating floor of warm color, waxed and always slippery as usual. What could have changed over the years?
Well, Larry's curiosity was answered by Mr. Roosevelt when he pointed to a museum space where a pretty girl with ornaments and Egyptian clothing, she was sitting on the bench in a neutral room conversing animatedly surrounded by four girls from different times, a girl Colonial, an Italian girl, a Greek girl and a Native American girl, sitting on the floor the women listened to her narrate, perhaps a funny story about her because the women laughed along with the young woman.
But not everything ended there, hidden behind a showcase with artifacts from the first African tribes, King Ahkmenrah allowed his striking eyes to be seen above a vessel at the level of his nose, observing the lady in question. It could be seen how the polychromatic orbs radically mutated from a deep tourmaline pigment to a brilliant green-water, and everything indicated that the change was connected according to their mood, making their eyes clearer, denoting joy or darker, showing absolute sadness, and in this case it seemed that the green color exposed light to all its essence.
"She is new, I hadn't seen her before I temporarily retired from here."
"She's a lovely young lady.", Teddy commented with acceptance towards her.
Larry smiled looking at the scene: "So that detail is Ahk and the Egyptian girl."
"This is Larry.", Sacajawea contributed her good eyesight being sweetly taken by the arm by Teddy. "Ahkmenrah has not skipped a day since she appeared. They are the same as two young people from this time playing to fall in love."
Sacajewea was tenderly made by the king to spend hours at random, other times too, choosing the hiding place behind the plants of Africa spying on that particular someone.
"I still remember the day the boy first saw the young woman.", Teddy smiled at the two teenagers.
**** Flash ****
It was night, and there was a little party, maybe it was the one that Larry started attending night classes to get his teaching degree.
Nothing particular happened as King Ahkmenrah came down from that balcony leaving Jed and Octavio in charge of the music.
Since Doctor McPhee already knew everything that was happening with the tablet, it was not surprising to see a figure come to life, so wandering next to one of them was not considered nonsense either.
It turned out that the aforementioned was a beautiful Egyptian girl, with light skin, hazel eyes, long brown hair, sandals, a fine long kalasiri (dress) with two straps that covered her bust made in real white linen with bows gold at his waist. She, too, was wearing a kind of short cape covering her shoulders, a two-piece cylindrical snake bracelet adorning her left arm, a small crown with a baby cobra, and a delicate pendant in the shape of a winged golden and green beetle with an ankh completing the young woman's outfit.
Ahkmenrah's face said it all, it seemed that everything happened in slow motion in his mind.
"Wow...", Ahkmenrah whispered as if he were seeing a wonder of the ancient world. "By Ra and all the gods."
Ahk's face lit up as he was dazzled by the bubbling chestnut. It was as if he were in a dream.
When he saw her speak willingly next to the Museum Director on one of the stairs, he was fascinated. No matter what she was doing, he smiled and his eyes filled with love and wonder. Ahkmenrah did not miss a single movement of the pretty girl, standing next to the desk watching her with a half-twisted smile and her gaze was as if billions of stars lit up within her eyes. The boy was indeed in love, and although not any woman managed to shake his heart as the Sheik of a harem in the past, she instantly shot him or, as the cliché is vulgarly said, love at first sight.
“I had not seen a museum more impressive than this one. It's amazing.”, she was so happy.
“I am extremely pleased that you feel comfortable, Your Highness. I will leave you with the figures of the establishment so that you can get to know the place. Miss.”, Doctor McPhee said goodbye with respect and she made a slight bow allowing her withdrawal.
Like everything an Egyptian goddess, she glamorous went down the stairs, the girl moved exploding sensuality and with a comic touch when everything happened in slow motion to the rhythm of the background music.
youtube
She ran her hair back with one hand, blinking coquettishly looking around while some exhibits threw roses at her, adoring her presence, therefore she greeted with extremely overwhelmed and gratefulness as she slid down the hall, seeming to parade like a 1999 BC model.
And to all this Ahk thought that she addressed him with that hip shake, he enlarged his smile but it was not, she followed long and the comical sound of when one track is run to another, made him raise an eyebrow reflecting a little disappointment. However, he continued absorbed in his thoughts without taking his eyes off each line of the toned and fine female figure, wandering in those curves when Mr. Roosevelt's voice made him come out of that trance.
"I don't want you to be the same as me.", Teddy spoke solemnly.
Ahkmenrah was half foolish trying to spin his answer well: "What do you mean?"
“In the sense that I have spent more than 50 years observing and not daring to say a word to my dear Sacajewea until Larry's arrival prompted me to do so. Do not hesitate or let her escape, Your Majesty.”, Teddy wisely advised as the boy sighed looking at the Egyptian girl.
The young woman with an unknown name detailed every corner and she never realized that those jade eyes did not lose sight of her.
Sac spoke very sweetly: "Teddy?", Appearing on the scene as she wrapped her arms around Mr. Roosevelt and inevitably smiled.
"He knows what he's doing, love."
It seems that the words of Mr. Roosevelt encouraged the king to arm himself with courage, inflate his chest, accommodate his deshret (crown) and approach her to relate, establish a bond, perhaps.
"This is so beautiful.", she whispered fascinated looking at the divine building and how the party continued with its magic.
"Hello.", Ahkmenrah finally said with real elegance behind her.
She gently spun on her axis as she was distracted watching the constellations form mirror balls illuminating the room in soft blue. The pretty girl greeted him with a friendly smile once they were face to face.
"Hello."
"What is your name?"
"I am Larempteh.", she introduced herself with singular elegance.
And Ahkmenrah raised an eyebrow detailing her peculiar appearance at a considerable distance, she had almost no makeup, just a little soft brown shade that accentuated her sweet eyes and bushy lashes, kohl for a discreet black liner and lipstick lipstick, privileged to possess the fleshy. Beautifull.
"High Blue Sapphire of the Nile, fourth queen of the fifth great king and sovereign of the reign of my pharaohs. It is a pleasure.", Larempteh added with graceful finesse in his speech.
She was not conceited, only that the way of presenting herself in the ancient world was that way when you were belonging to the nobility of Upper Egypt, and her voice was a caress with words for him since the girl was cordial, warm and very respectful , in addition to sweet and possessing that mix between shy and intellectual. She illuminated the whole place only with her presence.
"What a beautiful name.", Ahkmenrah recognized and she smiled, she was hypnotic and Ahk's eyes could not detach from the young woman for any reason. "Excuse me, I don't look at girls like that."
Larempteh excused him with a pleasant laugh: "Don't worry, it's fine. For that you have a view, you appreciate what you see."
"Also your English is perfect, you speak divinely, where did you learn?"
"I went to Cambridge University."
Ahkmenrah was amazed with a smile.
"Were you in Cambridge?"
"On display..."
"From the Egyptology Department?", both agreed in the sentence with surprise.
"Yes, that's right! What a coincidence!"
"Have you been there too? Wow, that's great."
"Is this your first night at the museum?"
"No, I came here in 1954 from the Giza expedition.", Larempteh said.
"How come I have never seen you before?"
"Here or Cambridge?"
"Both answers have value."
"Well, I arrived there in 1940 and have spent 14 years in my sarcophagus."
"That explains a lot."
"Yes. And here they kept me away in the warehouse until they created my showroom just around the corner from your showroom. I have had so few visitors interested in the old world that all this time I have been around my exhibition and never dared to abandon it, habit, melancholy perhaps... It is difficult to detach yourself from Cambridge once you belong 14 years."
"Indeed. It feels weird."
"It would also be due to the fame of a little docile nature that was instilled in us and I did not want to be feared by the other exhibitions. Apparently, today I took a lot of courage after 66 years being here and I left tonight finding a beautiful place."
Larempteh apparently hinted at Ahkmenrah, but Pharaoh did not catch that eulogy in the air.
"I understand you."
"I must add that it may be by fate, I would say."
"And why were we in different temples?", Ahkmenrah joked.
Larempteh found a cute shoulder: "Or maybe the gods had prepared our meeting for a suitable moment and I think it worked today."
"It is wonderful and you believe in destiny, that is fabulous."
She gave him a sweet smile with the music still playing in the background and neither she nor he stopped inspecting each other, reviewing his features, the most prestigious in her and manly in him. Larempteh decided to cut the air to get into the conversation a little more.
Larempteh said: "And, you're from around here I guess or..."
"I belonged. I am a limited time conservation."
She was stunned, Larempteh asked, "Limited time conservation?"
Ahkmenrah gave the queen a cute smile.
"Yes, I am a British museum of treasures."
She frowned and asked a little confused: "What?"
That's where the voice came into play in the king's mind.
"Great Ahk, now you will look like a clown from 4000 BC for the rest of your life."
Ahkmenrah was slow to process his own words, what he least wanted was to be an idiot in front of her and accidentally he did, he mentally reprimanded himself for the inconsistency he had just said, feeling ashamed for possibly making a bad impression within minutes of having her known.
The pharaoh spluttered trying to accommodate the correct sentence in her brain while she paid no attention to anything other than the strong blush of shame that formed from her cheeks to the bridge of her nose, therefore Larem smiled attentively at that detail. because it made her feel tender that there was still a young man like him and that she blushed in such a way, and that made him more nervous.
His throat went dry, his usej suffocated him, and Ahk swallowed thickly, omitting such awkwardness.
He adjusted his voice and said: "No, I meant that I am part of the treasures of the British Museum."
"No problem, I understood.", Larempteh laughed lightly. "And what is your name?"
"I am Ahkmenrah, the fourth king of the fourth king, the ruler of the lands of my parents and the pleasure is all mine."
Ahkmenrah showed up bowing in his presence showing Larem cordiality when he kissed the back of the queen's hand, she could not believe that that kind of young man with approximately 18 years of age, a classic conservation of 4000 years, was real. Like the man she dreamed of all her life but hearing the boy's name, she divinely opened her eyes at a certain surprise of having him face to face.
"For Isis! Are you the famous Ahkmenrah?”, Larempteh questioned with deep happiness.
Ahkmenrah frowned in confusion: "Famous?"
"Yes, in Cambridge. All the time the museum figures have talked about you, you are an icon there. By Ra! I can't believe it, I didn't think I had the chance to meet you one day and... Oh, what happiness! What an honor, son of the Sun. You must be considered a legend in the history of Egypt, not many reach one of the most remarkable and visited venues in the world as the British museum. It is a luxury that you are there then, you are very lucky.”
"Yes, I do not know if I am as important a figure in the history of Egyptian humanity as Ramses was, I knew later that he was more important than me."
"But you must have had fabulous feats to have been a part of here in the past as well."
“I suppose, although I don't entirely remember it, my memory has always been blank since I arrived. I mean, I wish they would help me a little more to understand myself and to know who I am apart from my name because all I know is that my determining home is there because my family is there. But sometimes I am only treated as a piece of archaeological piece from my Era.”
The glitter in Ahk's eyes faded slightly.
Larempteh grieved: "Oh what a shame they make you feel like this because you are a very nice boy."
Ahkmenrah analyzed the girl's words, the pharaoh blushed timidly again, his face was a poem and he frowned with a vague smile thinking that she could not not get over you by not resisting her charms.
Larempteh had a blush when reformulating his sayings: “Sorry, I didn't mean it like that, it was not my intention to bother you. I mean, you're cute in the sense of your soul.”
“You don't care, I've never been told before. It is precious that it comes from you. Thank you."
Larempteh smiled at Ahk's intense gaze, wiping a slight perspiration from her dress against her palms.
"You do not have to thank. After all, you do have a splendid shine and impressive eyes, they attract attention, they are very pretty.”
Ahkmenrah did 'the thing' with his smiling mouth, showing off his defined cheekbones.
"And maybe it must be because I just have them in the middle of my face.”, Ahkmenrah built a good sense of humor in which she laughed refinedly. "I also like your eyes, they are very warm and sweet. Since they are conspicuous and shocking to the delight of others, it would be considered a crime not to appreciate them in such a way nor are they how to be wasted.”
Queen Larempteh's eyes sparkled. An action that made her smile.
"Thank you. So your family is in the British museum, huh? It's great to have your parents nearby in one place or someone by your side to remind you of where you came from.”
“Yes, the boys made me stay close to them and it was also to keep my board safe. But don't worry, it's just a long story that I'll tell you already.”
"Okay, no inconvenience.", Larempteh said quietly.
"And where are yours?"
"I do not know. I am adrift just like you with my mind.”
"Oh I'm sorry."
"Do not worry, nothing happens. I suppose it is part of our life as museum exhibits having to find pieces of ourselves at random to feel complete. It's just a matter of divine intersession.”
"We can change the subject if you want."
"As you like."
Ahkmenrah watched her closely: "Dynasty XIX? I suppose."
"Yes, how did you know?", Larempteh cackled with sophistication.
She was charmingly curious to tuck a strand of hair behind her right ear, revealing one of her sparkling triangle-shaped hoops and elegant burgundy nail varnish.
"About the above, it is that you have an unseen face and it is impossible for you to go unnoticed. My guess is that you happen to be an old relative with proximity to Nefertari's family ancestors or perhaps it is because she has reincarnated in you."
Ahkmenrah learned to maintain his cordiality by behaving like a great nobleman, he was taught that his feelings should be fair and necessary before anyone but it seems that Larempteh appeared only to make him break the rules, disobeying his archaic teachings.
Well, Ahk always did, but Larem made it worse, like a fever with no disastrous results.
What he could never hide was a dazzled observing of her tangible beauty, he winked at her giving her a warm smile indirectly telling Larempteh how extremely beautiful she was.
Perhaps the young man hinted that the girl would be a descendant of the most important queen that Egypt had, making her an extremely attractive goddess for her taste and reach.
Larempteh thought, "No, I don't think that's the case either. Well, one knows who it comes from to reincarnate as a living human god on Earth, but one of my parents may have had the honor of belonging to the offspring of the Nefertari's lineage from the many children she had. Perhaps I am some great-granddaughter or great-great-granddaughter, as were the many siblings I had."
"The hundreds of kings who claimed your love should tell you."
Ahkmenrah guessed vehemently. And how not to do it? If she radiated sweetness and owned an exquisite exotic image; how it was not possible that the kings would not argue the hand of that venerable woman.
"No, well, yes, in part, but it was my older sister who received ninety-nine point nine percent of all these courtships.", Larempteh let out a natural laugh.
"Sister.", Ahkmenrah was not interested, rather he was unsuspecting. Shocked by the fact that her beauty is not praised.
"Yes. You see, Dad wanted two male rulers, one who was a strong pharaoh and who knew how to command the kingdom and another who was a champion in battles, especially in Kadesh. As you see, it could not be, he had my sister and me some time after that event. And considering that my father's wish was fulfilled very late, yes, he had more secondary children, but she and I were the eldest daughters of the family and for Real rules we had the privilege of direct access to lead a nation for being of pure lineage. Although something happened along the way and it was damaged or rather someone made history change its course regarding that. A long story that I will tell you.", Larempteh commented with a frown with a smile naturalizing his story.
"And why her and not you, how is that possible?", Ahkmenrah used a tone of Royal disbelief.
"It was just that she was extremely beautiful.", Larempteh just shrugged her shoulder in a cute way continuing the thread of praise. "She was so crazy though."
"I am sure she does not exceed the honey of your voice or your delicate presence.", Ahkmenrah said raising his jaw with elegant bearing.
The young queen did not know where to look, and of course, if Ahk's electric eyes did not dare to detach themselves from his youthful features.
Larempteh was intimidated by these charming courtships and tilted her face to the side a little hiding a faint blush keeping a thin smile as she tilted her head to later observe him.
"Excuse my daring but I couldn't stop watching you since I saw you. It's just that you're more beautiful than the Giza pyramids.", Ahkmenrah complimented her and the girl felt another strong blush take over her face.
In a delicate tone, Larempteh said: "How divine.", stunned with a slightly strange smile wandering her lips for all the praise she got from him.
"I spent 54 years wrapped in dirty linen bandages, locked in a sarcophagus and after waking up 66 consecutive nights to meet you, that's divine. You are a precious, beautiful creature."
Ahkmenrah after that praise, smiled sideways showing his immaculate teeth, without showing lewdness or perversion, it was like a seductive tactic in him.
The queen laughed in elegant confusion as she said: "Thank you?"
Obviously, in her time she was not very familiar with more than 100 compliments in a row due to her real beauty and so many coming from a single pharaoh, it was something intense but that was still a nice touch on her part.
"Don't be thankful since the pharaohs used to have an aggressive and unkind image. You should be suspicious.", Ahkmenrah commented regaining his posture of standing up.
Larempteh said: "I'll be careful then."
And her whispering was a little less than what's called suggestive, perhaps being eerily suggestive was a healthy seduction tactic to start the romance game.
"Although if someone stands between me and your beauty, probably the king of 4000 years ago, perhaps he will make an exception. But as long as none of that happens..."
"I knew what pharaohs were like in our time. Not tolerant, only in tiny exceptions.", Larempteh reaffirmed.
Ahkmenrah leaned down again, bringing the female hand to her lips, placing a kiss on her knuckles.
"I am kind, believe me not unless..."
The pharaoh straightened up, winking at the girl again so she smiled at him causing Ahk to wrap himself in the infinite tenderness of her beautiful grimace and lose herself in the brilliance of her precious eyes.
Maybe it was because of an attraction that burned inside her or an irrepressible instinct to want to touch her, even if it was to take something from her to remember her before returning to the darkness of her sarcophagus, extinguishing that sadness and going to 'sleep' happily and waking up a bit more alive by an obtension, and then the pharaoh felt the need to approach very slowly to Larem's face reviewing his eyes for each of its smooth details directing his lips to hers, who incidentally, looked at that mouth with reverie.
Larempteh for her part closed her eyes at the preamble of the stimulus in which her heart beat a thousand times stronger than before, announcing that perhaps she would have her first kiss under the beautiful blue light of the constellations. How romantic would it be, right?
She stood still with her eyelids hiding her pupils without startling when Ahkmenrah gently cupped a hand on her right cheek, it was such a sweet touch, he transmitted so much peace to her from the first moment.
Ahkmen closed the distance between the two more, and more, and more, and more, and more until Tilly's voice was heard as he ran to Laaa through the hall interrupting the moment.
"Laaa, no! Don't touch that! Those aren't headphones! It's a defibrillator!"
Ahkmenrah and Larempteh suddenly opened their eyes and immediately regretted the situation in which they found themselves and laughed without penalty or glory.
Larempteh said with a laugh: "How pitiful."
The queen touched her own face that burned from the strong blush, but she continued to laugh, being accompanied in good humor by the loud and manly laughter of the pharaoh.
That commotion where Tilly chased Laaa, made Rexy and Trixy freak out and make sounds minimally chasing away the crowd causing Larempteh to dodge the alpacas, the flames, the terracotta soldier and the Vikings fleeing in terror in his direction. .
There was a moment when the girl lost her balance due to their action and it was there when she fell into the arms of Ahk, who reflexively held her tight by the waist like the gentleman she is. That caused her to sink her face into the hollow of the precious and soft neck of the king, thus forming an electricity that was made at the clash of skin against skin and at that moment a spark ignited between the two upon closer inspection.
"Well, I must reaffirm it, now more than before, what divine eyes you have."
Ahkmenrah praised the color of the girl's irises that now mutated to the striking honey pigment, giving Larempteh a soft grimace on her lips as she watched him from behind her thick lashes as she smiled tenderly, with her too, of course losing herself in his eyes.

10 Reasons to read Marlie B’s ‘Novelty’
Okay, so I’m sure you’ve all already seen me posting about my good, cute, adorable, passionate, smart, sassy friend Marlie ( @hey-marlie ) and her novel - ‘Novelty.’ But I figured I’d just clue you in to some of the things you’re missing and why it’s such an important piece of literature that you should definitely at least sneak a peek at. Marlie is a really talented writer, whether she believes it or not, and I’d love to share this story with the entire world.
So, that being said, let me just Buzzfeed this bitch and tell you the Top 10 Reasons why YOU should be reading ‘Novelty’ :
1. Fallon Ford - The main character is an aspiring writer working on her senior capstone project. She’s spunky, short, affectionately called a ‘Tiny Demon’ by her ex-best friend (and total hottie). Fallon Ford is a strong and confident woman, and she may be a hot mess in her brain about her writing, but she’s got some serious power moves out there with the way she handles her work life, academic course load, friendships, and free time. Her fashion is kind of basically the cutest mix of vintage boss-ass bitch, and she’s a literal fucking ray of sunshine. We need more more strong female protagonists in our lives, and Fallon’s main goal in this novel isn’t to find a man and be happy - I mean, sure, she’s Out There and Getting It with some total hotties that I will mention later, but her main goal and aspiration is to become the best writer she can be and do her best. And that, my friends, I think is super awesome.
2. Diversity - The cast of ‘Novelty’ is super diverse and it’s not the kind of diverse that is trying to make a statement, but the kind of subtle diversity that is a part of all our lives and should be talked about more. When asked about her diverse cast of lovely characters, Marlie responded by saying: “initially i don’t really think i noticed that my ‘cast’ per say was quite diverse. my college campus is 50% international students - on a campus of less than 1,000 students - and so having extremely diverse classes, or diverse ‘friend groups’ and all that is super normal. we have a really active lgbtq community, and so that’s a huge norm in my life and so i really wasn’t questioning it until i was pinteresting and realizing that i’ve got a really good group of kiddos that i’m molding to perfection and helping them be the best versions of themselves. so i think it’s obviously important to have representation, and i think it should be second nature that we don’t have to think ‘oh i have to have a character to fill out ____ quota’ because then what’s the real reason you’re doing it, ya feel ? so yeah … definitely a diverse squad, but that’s how it should be. and i’m really happy with the characters i have so far and i’m looking forward to what’s to come ! thanks for the shout out ! it means a lot and it’s good to reflect on these things.” Her characters represent multiple members of the LGBTQ+ community, multiple POC - African American, mixed-race, Vietnamese, Bangladeshi, and Puerto Rican. Marlie also tackles body image and represents all her characters in all shapes and sizes.
3. Friendship - The friendships in ‘Novelty’ are the kind of healthy relationships with a bit of banter and tough-love that I think we can all learn lessons from. The relationship between best friends and roomies Fallon Ford and February Vale is one for the books. They are supportive of one another, basically co-habitating grannies, who help each other dress, motivate the other in their fields of study, and also find the time to hold each other accountable for their actions and emotions. There’s no judgment, no secrets, and while their friendship is a central part of the novel, it’s not something that Marlie overdoes or feels the need to include in every chapter. It’s authentic and organic, and it’s a great lesson in how a friend can be supportive in multiple situations. Honestly, they’re just super cute, and it’s nice to see how they interact with one another both in private, in public, and respect the other with utmost love and adoration.
4. The Enemy - The main plot and conflict of the novel comes in the form of a tall drink of water known as Dane Jacobs. He’s a year older than Fallon, a post-graduate teaching assistant at their university, and he and Fallon share quite the history. They’re the best friends to enemies trope wrapped up in an angst blanket that makes your heart throb whenever they’re alone together. But what sets Dane “The Enemy” Jacobs apart from other enemies to potential-lovers trope is that he’s not diminished to an abusive or degrading male who sees the female as inferior to himself. Yeah, the fall out he and Fallon had was not quite the separation many of us would ever want to feel in our lives. But Dane doesn’t put Fallon down in any way when he’s assigned to be her advisor for her project. If anything, their banter and quippy remarks to one another show the deep rooted friendship they once shared, and how their separation from one another since the breaking off of their friendship has impacted them in a more emotional way then they’d care to admit. He still supports her writing and is honest with her - sometimes a bit too honest - and only wants her to do best. He masks it by saying he wants her to do well so he can be graded fairly on his work ethic as a teaching assistant, but I think we can all agree he’s doing it because deep down, he still loves Fallon and wants to see her succeed. Plus, he has an adorable puppy named Watson who makes an appearance whenever we need him most.
5. Breaking Masculine Norms - Where the obvious pairing a lot of us are hoping for is the reunion of Fallon and Dane, there is one character that has waltzed into Fallon’s life in a big way - Lawyer Tom, the ultimate hottie. Marlie writes Tom in a very specific way - he’s not buff, or strong. He’s a freckly, unruly red-haired, tall and lanky man with bony shoulders and a nose that wrinkles when he laughs. He’s not your typical heartthrob, but he’s mouthwateringly perfect in every single way. He comes into Fallon’s life at a time where her love life is in a bit of disarray, and in the past couple chapters we’ve come to learn that Tom is the gentlemen-status all men should aspire to be. He lets Fallon stay overnight after a night out clubbing and doesn’t expect anything from her but her company over dumplings. He visits her at work when she tells him she’s nervous about getting back to her normal shift. He even finds time to make morning runs with Fallon fun by going out for breakfast quiches at a little cafe every morning. He’s quarting her platonically and it’s so goddamn adorable and quirky. Yeah, they kissed once and it was hot hot hot, but he hasn’t kissed her since and he’s letting her take the relationship at the pace she wants. She’s the one who has to ask him on dates, and he’s the one who’s always justifying her emotions and actions whenever she’s feeling down or insecure. He’s a great support system and is open about his emotions and the fact that his home life hasn’t been the absolute best in the past. He’s confident in his work, is constantly calm and at peace with his surroundings, and enters every situation with grace and poise. Not to mention he has the most amazing relationship with his younger brother Cody, and honestly, is my new ultimate hero. He’s the role model all men should be aspiring to be, and the fact that he’s being so patient and kind and wonderful with Fallon is a huge turn on.
6. Success in Art - The legendary roommate February Vale is a goddess not only casually in life, but also in the art department. I know this is only a little tiny thing, but February is also in her senior year of university and she’s already had great success in her art career. It’s not often we see characters studying art portrayed as successful, or as having a grip on their education. The concept of the “struggling artist” is romanticized and oftentimes degraded to nothing more than just a hobby. But February expresses everything that’s wonderful about art - immersing yourself in your project, applying to galleries and exhibits, and being raw with your art in a way you sometimes can’t express yourself in words. When February came out as bisexual to her parents, it wasn’t received well and she took those feelings to the canvas, winning her awards and slots in galleries all through London (the characters’ home base). Marlie also never explicitly mentions what kind of art February is most interested in or establishes as her signature, and so I think that is truly important for us as readers to depict what we consider to be successful art and know that it can not only come from a student, but a woman, and a damn wonderful and courageous one at that.
7. The Banter - One of Marlie’s greatest triumphs in writing is her dialogue. She’s taught me so much about how to find multiple voices in your characters and to embody those personalities within their conversations. The banter between all the characters - primarily the snippy and sometimes crass comments rapidly fired back and forth between Fallon and Dane - is exceptional. The characters come to life through their words and expressions, and it’s a great way to not only connect to the characters yourself, but to really feel as if you’re standing there watching these characters interact. The office scenes between Dane and Fallon are truly amazing, and the flat scenes Fallon and February bring to life are hilarious. You can tell that these characters are can portray different versions of themselves depending on whether they’re in public or in private, and I believe that’s a great attribute to the great writer behind the words.
8. Pinterest - Per a request from an anon, Marlie has constructed an entire Pinterest account dedicated to storyboarding the personas of her characters. Every outfit mentioned, every studio described, and every action played out by each individual can be found within the boards of the Novelty Pinterest, and is a great outside resource to gaining a better understanding of who these characters are and how Marlie is envisioning them. They’re super fun to scroll through, and I oftentimes find myself going back to the characters mentioned in each chapter and attempting to find the outfits they were wearing, or the coffee shop they were sitting in. Seriously, it’s the absolute most unique thing I’ve ever seen a writer do and I’m fascinated by it.
9. Updates - Marlie is extremely good at making sure the updates are on time every single week. She updates every Saturday mid-morning and provides her own thoughts on the chapter as well as some insights to her writing mind. If Marlie has received any donations to her ko-fi page that week, she works hard to make sure the updates go up faster. She’s even posted on a Wednesday before. So really, you’re always getting new content and always learning more about the characters and the story, which is really truly wonderful.
10. Marlie - Obviously I’m going to talk about my girl. Marlie has been writing for ages, but has never really shared anything with anyone in public like this before. She’s taken what little concepts I had about these characters and this world and she’s run with it. I get the most random texts from her at 3am saying she has this great idea for how to develop a specific relationship, or introduce a certain character. She thinks everything through and edits the shit out of whatever she’s written so that it’s pristine by the time it’s published. She works so hard, and she lives with these characters in her mind 24/7. The thought and care that goes into her writing after each chapter and how she interacts with her readers is so important, because she will write paragraphs depicting specific, seemingly minute moments from the previous chapter, only for your mind to be blown as you learn something that you may have missed. She’s a lovely human and cares so deeply for her writing. She’s been helping me for years, YEARS, with my own writing and the fact that she’s out here creating this whole world and community of her own now is fascinating to me. There is nothing this girl can’t do, and I am constantly in awe of each chapter and the emotions I feel even if it’s what she considers a ‘filler’ chapter. She’s a keeper, that’s for sure.
-----
SO, those are the top ten reasons why you should be out there reading ‘Novelty’ and supporting our girl Marlie B. There are so many other reasons why the novel is as amazing as it is, but I think what it all comes down to is having a writer who cares about her readers, cares about her writing, and cares enough to want everything to just make sense. I’ll put all her links below so you can explore it all you want, but let’s support some new writers on here and make sure you’re reblogging what you like. Circulating what you’re reading is so important! And this girl deserves our love for sure.
Thanks for everyone who is already out here representing our girl and for all the questions and donations you’ve provided for her! She loves it! And she’s going to kill me for posting this! But I love her so freaking much! If anyone ever wants to freak out about each chapter with me, I’m always here to fangirl. No doubt about it. Thanks for your support, everyone! Have a great weekend.

THE  DOGS  IN  SHERLOCK'S  MIND PALACE
In The Hounds of Baskerville Sherlock mentions for the first time the existance of his mind palace and the audience can watch him enter that palace consciously and on purpose. He is looking for possible meanings of the terms  ‘Liberty  In  Hound’. Browsing the word HOUND Sherlock brings to light two special breeds of dogs and 'Hound Dog’. That's a collective term for various hunting dogs and it is also the title of a very distinctive song adapted by Elvis Presley in the 50s.
Tumblr media
"There has to be something ... something ... ah, something ... something buried deep."  (Sherlock, THOB)
WOLFHOUND     RIDGEBACK     HOUND DOG
Someone made the desicion to use exactly these dog breeds and this song for Sherlock's mind palace. Which is very interesting because those choices are rather exceptional. Mostly because there are clearly other possible options for more popular hunting dogs or dogs with a closer link to the story itself .... like ...
The Setter ... THOB starts with an Irish Setter. Redbeard is of the same breed. Why not use one for the mind palace in THOB too? Would that have been to obvious?
The Foxhound ... is probably the best known British hunting dog. Considering that Jim Moriarty uses a tiepin shaped like a fox head later in the story (TRF Trial) .... now, that would have been a lovely connection.
The Greyhound ... is mentioned in Shakespeare's Henry V ... “I see you stand like greyhounds in the slips, straining upon the start!"   That passage is cited by Sherlock in TLD. Why not use the Greyhound for the mind palace instead of the Wolfhound? What would have been the difference?
The Spaniel ... Paddy, Sherlock's new puppy mentioned on Twitter, the one with the Irish name (Patrick), is an English Springer Spaniel. Additionally there exists  also a Shakespeare reference to a spaniel in Two Gentleman of Verona, Act 3, Scene 1, Launce:
"He lives not now  that knows me to be in love;                                             yet I am in love; but a  team of horse shall not pluck that from me;              nor who ’tis I love; and yet ’tis a woman;                                                       but what woman, I will not tell myself;                                                           and yet ’tis a milkmaid; yet ’tis not a maid, for she hath had gossips;           yet ’tis a maid, for she is her master’s maid, and serves for  wages.           She hath more qualities than a water-spaniel; which is much in a bare Christian."
The Basset ... Elvis Presely once performed the song 'Hound Dog' in the presence of a Basset. And Elvis is mentioned a second time in TLD ... as an example of someone who can be recognized solely by his first name, just like Napoleon or Sherlock himself.  And of course, there is Shakespeare once again ... he refers to dogs that are supposedly the ancestors of the Basset in A Midsummer Nights Dream, Act IV, Scene 1, Theseus:
“My hounds are bred out of the Spartan kind, So flewed, so sanded, and their heads are hung With ears that sweep away the morning dew, Crook-kneed, and dew-lapped like Thessalian bulls, Slow in pursuit, but matched in mouth like bells, Each under each. A cry more tunable Was never hollaed to, nor cheered with horn, In Crete, in Sparta, nor in Thessaly. Judge when you hear.”
The Bloodhound ... In ACDs story 'The sign of four' Sherlock Holmes himself is compared to a bloodhound by Dr.Watson. And exactly this quote is mentioned in TSOT (X).  Rachel Talalay gifted the crew of Sherlock BBC with a T-shirt displaying a Bloodhound and a shark, arranged very similar as the symbol of Yin and Yang. Toby the Bloodhound appears in TST. Furthermore the ancestor of the Bloodhound is the above mentioned Basset. A Bloodhound for the mind palace would have been quite a logical choice.
And what about Beagle, Pointer, Terrier, Retriever or Labrador? (Nice cameo appearance for Mark's dog  Bunsen? :)))  Really, there are a lot of possibilities and options ... yet the choice fell on Ridgeback, Wolfhound and 'Hound Dog'. Why?
Let's take a closer look at the 'dogs' of Sherlock's mind palace then.
Tumblr media
Ridgeback isn't the full name of the dog breed shown on screen. There exist two other variations of Ridgebacks but both have pointy ears, which makes it easy to classify the first dog in Sherlock's mind palace. This is .....
The Rhodesian Ridgeback
The European forebears of that breed can be traced to the early pioneers of the Cape Colony of southern Africa, who crossed their dogs with the semi-domesticated, ridged hunting dogs of the Khoikhoi. These native dogs, though described as ugly, were noted for their ferocity when acting as guard dogs. The descendents of those dogs, formerly called Boer Hounds, became the forerunners to the modern Rhodesian Ridgeback.
These imposing dogs are known to be loyal, intelligent, sensitive and athletic. Originally, Rhodesian Ridgback's were used for hunting meat, to defended the cattle herds, staff, and homesteads ... even from lions. And because of their ability to keep a lion at bay while awaiting its master's arrival to make the kill, the Rhodesian Ridgback is also known as Van Rooyen's Lion Dog or the African Lion Hound or African Lion Dog.  (X)
The African Lion Hound! What a surprise! Of all the available hunting dogs, someone decided to put exactly a Lion Hound into Sherlock's mind palace. The lion .... this big 'yellow' feline ... is closely connected to John Watson throughout the whole story. (X  X)  In the zodiac, the lion is a sun sign and the sun is also assigned to John ... Sherlock's 'conductor of light'. And similar to John, who is a soldier AND a doctor, the lioness-headed egypt goddess Sekhmet (TGG) is also a goddess of war AND healing, who bears the solar disc on her head.
A lot of 'coincidences'?  Well, on to the next dog.  :)
Tumblr media
Again .... 'Wolfhound' isn't the full name of this dog. But there is only one dog calld Wolfhound, therefore the classification is easy. This is  ...
The Irish Wolfhound
The breed is very old; there are suggestions it may have been brought to Ireland as early as 7000 BC. They originally developed from Celtic war hounds to one used for hunting and guarding. Irish Wolfhounds can be an imposing sight due to their formidable size. They are considered to be the largest dogs in the world and are also called Irish Hound, War Dog or Wolf Dog. The name Wolfhound originates from its purpose ... wolf hunting with dogs.
The character of a Wolfhound is most easily described by its historical motto, “gentle when stroked, fierce when provoked". As they are often friendly with strangers they are not very reliable as watchdogs. However, when protection is required this dog is never found wanting and displays its fearless nature.  (X)
Regarding Sherlock BBC there are two strong connections to the Irish Wolfhound.
1 - THE WOLF - the winged wolf with the roses who is tattoed onto the brest of the addict in the drugs den in HLV. Tattooed onto a man who is most likely a mirror for Sherlock. The symbolism is quite fitting in my opinion.
Tumblr media
'The way this wolf is presented doesn't convey the feeling of agression, evil or danger. Quite the contrary. It appears to be strong and calm, an expression of wisdom in ist eyes. The wolf represents our instinctive nature, basic animal instincts ... everything that is wild and free and independent. Even more so a wolf with wings. The winged wolf is able to fly .... becomes his own 'pilot' ... is able to break free and soar the skies. And the roses? Roses have been the ultimate sign for love since Aphrodite was born from the seafoam.'  (That's just my own interpretation of that tattoo.)
The wolf is also strongly connectet to the moon ... just like Sherlock himself, the 'lunatic', ... from the rooftop in PILOT/ASIP to the graveyard at the end of TFP. Originally the term 'lunatic' was used for someone who went crazy with every phase of the moon ... like a werewolf.  :)
2 - THE HOUND ... the second connection can be found on the brest of another man ... the H.O.U.N.D. symbol on Dr.Franklands garment. I never gave much attention to the ferociously snarling animal displayed there ... 'the hound' ... until I began researching the 'hounds' in Sherlock's mind palace:
Tumblr media
If I'm not very much mistaken then the canine representing H.O.U.N.D.  ,,,,, is indeed an Irish Wolfhound ... probably 'in action' and its ears flapping backwards.  (Source of pic)
H.O.U.N.D. represents the drug which stimulates fear ... Sherlock's (Henry's) very own, very deepest und most basic fear. And when that monstrous creature awakens and turns up in Dewer's Hollow, with glowing red eyes ... a man emerges out of the poisoned fog .... and Sherlock stares into the face of ... Jim Moriarty.
Tumblr media
African Lion Hound and Irish Wolfhound.  Indeed! What an interesting choice for Sherlock's mind palace! The hounds humans bred to keep lion and wolf at bay.
Is this another version of ... John or James? But this time symbolized with dogs?  Well, let's look at the third 'dog' then ... the HOUND ...
Tumblr media
The meaning of 'hound dog'
DOGS:  a dog of any of numerous hunting breeds including both scent hounds (such as the bloodhound and beagle) and sight hounds (such as the greyhound and wolfhound)
PERSONS:  someone mean or despicable who pursues like a hound, affects by persistent harassing and annoys without ceasing. Or someone who avidly seeks to collect something  (I think one could call Jim indeed rather annoying. :))
ELVIS:  he adapted the song Hound Dog in the 50s. At one time he performed it alongside with a Basset. But neither Basset nor Bloodhound turn up in Sherlock's mind palace. Instead he hears the first chord of 'Hound Dog' and the face of Elvis Presley overlays his own. Therefore I guess it is the song and not a dog which is the important bit in that deduction.
And 'Hound Dog' - performed by Elvis - has indeed an interesting history.
On the first TV performance of 'Hound Dog' (The Milton Berle Show, June 5, 1956) Elvis started the song up-tempo but after the third verse he slowed it down for a steamy, hip-pumping final verse. The kids in the crowd went wild, but so did the press in the days that followed. Television critics across the country slamed the performance for its "vulgarity" and "animalism." And for the first time Elvis was attacked in the media as "sexual exhibitionist". With 'Hound Dog' and the way Elvis performed that song, his tabloid nickname was born: 'Elvis the pelvis' ... and his performance was declared as "unfit for family viewing." From now on Elvis was filmed consequently from the waist up. In short ... the way Elvis presented Hound Dog to the audience turned the song into a highly sexually charged piece of music.
Watch that performance here if you like.  :)
But there is much more to tell about Hound Dog ....
.... because for all the silliness of it's text, there's a not-so-tame edge to the song's back story. Co-writer Jerry Lieber admitted decades later, the song's most famous line was just code for 'You ain't nothing but a m***** f*****'.
Elvis Presley made the song famous, but it wasn't actually written for him.  In 1952 Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller gave the song to the big voiced R&B artist Willie Mae "Big Mama" Thornton. Whatever Hound Dog eventually became, it was written as a conventional blues number and in the hands of Thornton, it was a thunderous and lyrically racy song about some no good hound dog of a man about to be kicked to the curb.
You ain't nothing but a hound dog Been snoopin' round my door You can wag your tail But I ain't gonna feed you no more.
Tumblr media
Thornton's recording soared to the top of the R&B charts, but it needed to be cleaned up before it would be ready for mainstream audiences of the 50s. Freddie Bell and the Bell Boys did exactly that in 1955. They replaced the racy with the ridiculous, turned a declaration of no more sex ("You can wag your tail but I ain't gonna feed you no more") into a reprimand for poor hunting skills ("Well, you ain't never caught a rabbit and you ain't no friend of mine"). It was a crowd pleaser when they performed in Las Vegas in 1956. That's where Elvis heard it, liked it, and asked if he could record it. But before the recording Elvis' test-drove' the song on the Milton Berle Show.  (X)
Isn't it interesting that Sherlock has stored precisely this song in his mind palace? Or more precisely .... that someone decided to put exactly this song in his MP .... In the MP of the man who says: "This is my hard drive, and it only makes sense to put things in there that are useful ... really useful."
Sooo .... Hound Dog apparently belongs to those things that are really, really useful for Sherlock? Looks like Hound Dog is even more important and useful than the solar system ... because Hound Dog didn't get 'deleted'.  Interesting! :))))
Hound Dog is the last thing that turns up in Sherlock's MP session at Baskerville. He stops afterwards. All the previously viewed data rushes through his mind again in quick speed - only partially visible for the audience even if you go shot by shot  (that's when I sumbled over the WATSON in Sherlock's mind palace :)))  Finally only two words remain between Sherlock's hands ...
Hound ... dog ...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And that's the moment when Sherlock draws his final conclusion ...  HOUND ..... PROJECT HOUND ....
Tumblr media
I leave you to your own deductions. Thanks @callie-ariane for the scripts.

50+ African gods names and meanings - Tuko.co.ke
Tumblr media
African communities have so many gods and goddesses, and each one has its own role to play in life. Some gods and goddesses are for wealth, war, health, healing, protection, death, evil, creation, and so on. Africans who believe in these gods consider it essential to worship and adore these gods and goddesses to have a good and smooth life.
Even though the larger religions such as Christianity and Islam have made big inroads in the African continent, the African gods and goddesses are still worshipped today. Here are the names of African gods:

Tumblr media

Oshun is typically associated with water, purity, fertility, love, and sensuality. She is considered one of the most powerful of all orishas in the Yoruba religion. She possesses human attributes such as vanity, jealousy, and spite.
There you have it. A comprehensive list of African gods' names and meanings. With the introduction of larger religions such as Islam and Christianity, the concept of African deity is slowly losing its meaning. However, some ethnic communities still believe in and worship these gods and goddesses even today.
Tuko.co.ke published an article about the list of major religions in Africa. Before the white man came to Africa, the African people had a doctrine. Little is known about the ancient African religions. However, it is a fact that all doctrines have common features such as belief in a supernatural power, the belief of life after death and the beliefs surrounding burial.
Research shows that the majority of citizens in Nigeria and Africa as a whole are devoted Christians. The African continent has a variety of religions practised across all regions. In Africa, religiosity has a big influence on arts, culture, lifestyle and traditions of its people.

ellen galagher  Dont axe me  Article :https://hazlitt.net/feature/search-black-atlantis In September 2015, Kyle Lydell Canty of Rochester, New York, travelled to British Columbia. He hadn’t planned to stay for long, but after two days in Canada, Canty decided to apply for refugee status. He appeared before the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada in October of that year with the argument that Black Americans were “being exterminated at an alarming rate.” As proof, Canty alleged that he had been harassed by the police in six states in which he held offenses, such as jaywalking and disorderly conduct, that he claimed he never committed. Although the Board ultimately rejected his candidacy on the grounds that Canty would not be subjected to “cruel and unusual punishment” upon his return, Ron Yamauchi, an IRB member, did find that the actions of the American police “raise a question about [Canty’s] subjective fear,” a fear that, according to the United Nations, is rooted in historical and racially terroristic acts, such as police killings and “state violence.”
In 1838, after a failed attempt that led to his incarceration, twenty-year-old Frederick Bailey used his nautical knowledge while working at a waterfront to disguise himself as a free Black sailor and boarded a train from Baltimore to New York where he then changed his last name to Douglass to avoid suspicion.
James Baldwin could not reconcile himself with America. He travelled and lived in places such as Istanbul and Paris in the 1960s, where, according to a 2009 essay in The New Yorker by Claudia Roth Pierpont, he would not be shamed for the color of his skin or his sexuality.  Nina Simone revealed in her autobiography I’ll Put A Spell On You why she left America for Liberia in the 1970s: “I had arrived in Liberia with no idea of how long I intended to stay; after a few hours I knew it was going to be for a long, long time—forever.” When she returned to the States for financial reasons, “I flinched at every noise, expecting terrible events that always hit me when I arrived in the country that disowned me … I … longed for Liberia …”
The desire to escape endures within many Black Americans. It manifests in literal attempts at relocation, as in Canty’s case, but also through our art. “I think to be born Black in America,” said the video and performance artist Lex Brown, “is to be fully in touch with, one, the universal existential crisis of being human, two, the crisis of carrying on the body of an un-chosen evidence of the fundamental hypocrisy of America (i.e. home of the free, land of the slaves) and three, the impossibility of escaping or delaying crisis number one because of number two.” Our perpetual lack of belonging fuels our desire to flee, but where do you turn when there seems to be nowhere to seek refuge?
*
Sarah Yerima, a Rhodes Scholar studying sociology at the University of Oxford, has been moving between countries for five or six years, from the United States to Brazil to the United Kingdom. “I’ve been trying to find some peace and it’s all terrible. No matter where I am, the anti-Blackness is pervasive. However, the arts give a kind of comfort.” In 1977, The Isley Brothers released “Voyage to Atlantis,” in which lead singer Ron Isley croons to an unnamed woman about sailing to a “paradise out beyond the sea.” That same year, DC Comics released issue #452 of the Adventure Comics series, in which Black Manta, a Baltimore native turned supervillain whose nautical and birth origins are reminiscent of those of Frederick Douglass, seeks to take Atlantis from Aquaman, a blonde-haired, white superhero, by killing his son. In a standoff, Black Manta says to Aquaman, “This city … shall … be a new empire over which I alone shall rule! … I had recruited enough of my own people to serve that purpose …”
“Your people?” Aquaman responds. “You mean … surface dwellers?”
“No,” Black Manta says, “I mean exactly what I said, ‘My people.’ Or have you never wondered why I’m called Black Manta?” Black Manta wanted to create an underwater colony in which African-Americans could rid themselves of a white-dominated surface world.
In the packaging for Outkast’s 1996 sophomore album ATLiens, the artwork features Big Boi and Andre 3000 as freedom fighters against censorship and population control; Atlanta is re-pictured as the lost city of Atlantis. These artistic renderings of a Black utopia present a hopeful future—places where we can live in all of our complexity and without oppression.
“If you think about how American planning has worked, it has always pushed towards a utopia. New York, Chicago—all major American cities—as violent as they were, were utopic visions,” says Jess M., a student and researcher of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Department of Urban Studies and Planning. In designing cities deliberately to oppress people of colour, she says, “planners believed that if Black and brown people didn’t exist, then these utopias would.”
This racism has led many Black artists to reimagine fictitious nations, such as Atlantis, or develop new mythologies altogether through Afrofuturism, a literary and cultural aesthetic that blends historical components, along with science fiction and fantasy, in order to center Black people.
The musician, philosopher, and filmmaker Sun Ra was one of its pioneers, creating what Ytasha Womack, author of Afrofuturism: The World of Black Sci-Fi and Fantasy Culture calls, “sonar sounds for the space age in the ’50s.” In the 1970s, the Afrofuturistic sound began to expand. Combined with sci-fi elements in works such as “Spaceship Lullaby” and “Africa,” in his 1974 film Space is the Place, Sun Ra, playing the protagonist, seeks to transport African-Americans to occupy a new planet in outer space he discovers with his crew, The Arkestra.
Sun Ra’s influence continues to be felt. George Clinton and the Funkadelics incorporated Afrofuturism into their works through electronic instruments, space costumes, new mythology, and mind-boggling wordplay. Janelle Monae’s android aesthetic is a direct descendent of Sun Ra’s innovation. Contemporary artists Amaryllis DeJesus Moleski and Sheena Rose depict black women as goddesses, mythical creatures, and arbiters of their universe. As Stephanie George, former curatorial fellow of New York’s Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Arts, puts it: “You have to disrupt temporality.” In order to find purpose and affirmation, a Black artist must undermine time and space as we know it to find a place for his or herself.
*
Since the 1800s, refuge and relief from racist violence and oppression has meant any number of things: escaping to the North, fleeing to a different country altogether, or staying put physically while moving forward in one’s imagination to create a world where Black people are uplifted and able to live as multidimensional human beings. Many of the greatest African-American works of art have been the products of times of oppression. Our art is a form of resistance.
So now, days away from the inauguration of a president whose platform was praised by the Ku Klux Klan, what happens to that art? Will there be a new renaissance or simply a continuation of established genres? Geraldine Inoa, a playwright at New York’s Public Theater, says that disturbing events like the Trump inauguration often inspire people to “retreat” to other artistic movements. “But because this art exists in this reality under this president, it will be different. Trump is rather unique in that he has risen during new a technological world that has changed the way art is created and shared. We will see a new renaissance based on the current reality that combines the modern tools artists have their disposal.”
Or, as the queer femme writer and editor Myles Johnson puts it, “there’s going to be a renaissance and we can’t help it. Black people have never not been creative.”

Art and ideas patchwork essay I intend to not only define what is suggested by the term 'art and ideas' but question the relationship between 'art' and its 'ideas'. Moreover when was art supposedly invented and some of the key movements such as Christianity, the Enlightenment, Romanticism, Modernism and Post-modernism. These of which shaped the cultural history we have inherited and our understanding of art. The term 'Art' is now used more loosely than ever. 'Is it art?' has been an argument starter that has been repeated for years, often by art critics, historians and art lovers. Is the question asked out of pure arrogance? Or is it there to purposely challenge the public and provoke a reaction? It is hard to argue what is and what isn't art. The phrase 'A child could do that' is constantly thrown around modern art galleys by people, who in my opinion feel excluded from the art world and are quick to question what is being displayed in our modern day galleries such as Tate Modern. This was questioned in a completely different context when a teenager placed a pair of glasses on the floor of the the San Francisco Museum of Modern art and watched the people visiting treat the object like it was art. There's one thing to be able to discuss exactly what is art but when we are deceived into thinking something is art when in reality it is just a joke, artists are embarrassed as to what our practice is becoming and start to question themselves as I know I have. But, then again are we as practitioners not able to use this now question to our advantage to deceive the people viewing our work? Not maliciously but educationally. For example when sculpture Gavin Turk made an eight edition piece called 'Trash' at first glance we see house hold trash bags. But when in reality we are deceived and these objects at first glance, worth nothing, become something of great value - eight bronze sculptures of trash bags painted black. But still, not exactly the African thirtieth and fortieth century Benin Bronzes -  The sculptures the highlight craftsmanship in Mediterranean culture. At first thought it makes me sad that Turks art doesn't resemble some sort of culture or history, but then it does something that has only started to just become a thing in the art word - question what is art. This subject matter has been put to the test in a book by Susie Hodge titled - 'Why your five year old couldn't of done that' This book tells you that to appreciate modern art you need to be able to understand it with an open mind. Hodge focuses on contextualising the work in the history of ideas so you can appreciate what motivated it. Hodge explains as to why a five-year-old could not have made each of the hundred selected artworks. Of course she is aware five year olds have the capability of smearing paint across materials but her book emphasises that an artist creates their work with a meaning taking weeks if not years of a build up to a final product. The greater part of the book comprises more general introductions to the world of Conceptual and Abstract Expressionist art. This argument then makes us as a society question the importance of art. We forget how art is used in thousands of day to day ways for example the way in which your home is decorated or the clothes you wear, the advertisements thrown into your face everywhere. So when on the timeline of art history we can point to and say when art was invented? One of the earliest recordings would be the cave paintings of El Castillo around 40,000 BCE. These paintings consisted of animals such as the Wooley Mammoth and representations of the human body cut short by only displaying the imprint of a hand. This is most breath taking as it is repeated approximately 50 times. They used tools such as handmade paintbrushes, fingers and some sort of airbrush technique. The airbrush technique for me was the most intriguing as it looks like the stencil of a human hand created by a can of spray paint. It makes me question, how did such a dated wall painting represent such a modern day technique. Also, does the modern perception of 'anything can be art' take away the original definition of art as a still in time, a way of capturing a moment. Is it sad that modern art and its no boundaries persona has made us forget that the true definition of art was to record history as it was being made? Or is this our modern day influence and our way of recreating the definition of art because we have many other ways of recording art such as the internet. This is evident in Abstract Impressionism - when painting has to do what photography cant. I begin to question can we define art to a precise moment in time? 'The invention of art: A cultural history' by Larry Shiner gives us an understanding of the invention of art and his educated opinion on its definition, a book that he spent over a decade honouring his time to. Shiner asks us to question the difference of art history and modern invention. He continues to explain how around 250 years ago in the eighteenth century art began to be for pleasure rather than capturing a memory. It started to shock people for example a nude portrait would only be found in a bedroom as a sort of soft porn representation. Not displayed for the public. "On this high cultural ground, noble and bourgeois could meet as a fine art public, rejecting both the frivolous diversions of the rich and highborn as well as the vulgar amusements of the populace." In my opinion Shiners theory is correct and is the beginning of our understanding of art in the modern world. It also gives us an explanation why art history has been so extensively important on how we experience art today. After cave paintings, cultural products such as religion, key movements and intellectual personality's began shaping our perception of art for example: Classical Antiquity. This was around the time that a piece of art is only recognised, not the artist. The Venus de Milo dated 2000 years ago in 100BCE depicts the Greek Goddess Aphrodite also know as Venus by the Romans. This sculpture was one of the key starting points for artist recognition having the sculptors name 'Alexander of Antioch' carved into the plinth.

Sensor Sweep: Hammett, Hernstrom, Heinlein, Haggard
Comic Books (Paint Monk): Copyright. Public Domain. Cease & Desist. Not the words one would normally think to associate with a battle featuring Conan of Cimmeria and yet here we are. Now that the smoke has cleared, Ablaze is finally able to deliver translated versions of French Glénat’s Conan comics. Let me see if I can sum it up succinctly. In Europe, most of Robert E. Howard’s works are in the public domain. In the United States?
Publishing (Kairos):  There’s a shortage of paper, because it comes from China. The two largest printers of magazines and books in the U.S., Quad/Graphics and LSC Communications were going to merge last summer, but something got in the way. Now, LSC Communications has filed for bankruptcy. The second largest printer, Quad, has shut its book printing facilities entirely. In some regions, major distributors have shut down or disappeared, while although others, like Ingram, are still operating, although with reduced staff.
New Releases (DMR Books): The next DMR Books release is The Eye of Sounnu, the long-awaited collection of Schuyler Hernstrom’s stories from Cirsova magazine. Today we reveal the incredible cover by Brian LeBlanc (who also did the cover for Renegade Swords.) The title of the collection is taken from the cover story, “Gift of the Ob-Men,” which previously appeared in the first issue of Cirsova, as well as the free anthology The Infernal Bargain and Other Stories.
Hard-boiled Fiction (Elgin Bleeker): The Hammett novel, which I posted about (here), is a complicated yarn of murder and political corruption. Nick Beaumont is an advisor and right-hand man to Paul Madvig, a political power broker. In the book, Hammett showed the strong ties between the men who were long-time friends. A lot of that was lost in the 1942 movie starring Alan Ladd as Nick and Brian Donlevy as Paul because the story needed to be trimmed down to fit a movie’s normal running time. (There is also a 1935 version starring George Raft and Edward Arnold, but I have not seen it.)
Pulp Science-Fiction (Adventures Fantastic): OK, I’m gonna do it.  With the exception of some of the novels, I’ll be looking at the nominees for the 1945 Retro Hugos, which are awarded for stories published in 1944.  I’m going to start with the novelettes.  I read “The Children’s Hour” earlier this week as a possibility Henry Kuttner birthday post before the Retro Hugo shortlist was announced.  Might as well tackle it while it’s fresh on my mind.
Pulp Fiction (Dark Worlds Quarterly): Edmond Hamilton was a Science Fiction writer who is loved for his Captain Future novels, his Star Kings and any number of other Pulp stories. He was an important innovator of the 1920s and early 30s, as well as one of the best writers of Superman comics in the 1940s, 50s and 60s. But there was this time when Ed wrote Mystery stories for money…Hamilton was one of the first SF writers who tried to make a living writing only Science Fiction and Fantasy. He succeeded for the most part but there were lean years in the Great Depression when he turned to Mystery fiction.
Fiction (Jon Mollison): Is now really the best time to write a post-apocalyptic novel? It is if you know what you are doing. And as a writer, let me assure you – I know what I’m doing. The sad fact is that we already live in a post-apocalyptic world. Sooner than expected, we’ll be tasked with finding a path out of the relative doom that follows the American Empire. And fiction can help us do that. If it is the right kind of fiction.
Fiction (Track of Words): Black Library’s Siege of Terra series reaches its halfway point with Saturnine by Dan Abnett, a 500+ page beast of a book in which secrets are revealed, big names start to fall, and the stakes – somehow – get even higher. Having taken Lion’s Gate spaceport, the traitor host marches on the fortifications of the Lion’s Gate itself while simultaneously driving at the Eternity Gate spaceport, stretching the loyalist defenders to breaking point. With battles raging on multiple fronts and resources dwindling, Dorn faces impossible questions of compromise and sacrifice, as he searches for a strategy that might tip the balance in his battle of wills and wits with Perturabo.
Warhammer (Warhammer Community): This is Warhammer’s biggest plastic monster yet… it towers over a regular gargant and easily stares Archaon and his three-headed mount in their many faces. It’s festooned with details that mark it as a creature of the Mortal Realms, including trinkets from across the various factions and bits of monster – presumably to snack on after battle.
D&D (Boggswood): Both before D&D was written, and long afterward, Dave Arneson stocked his dungeons randomly and he devised different methods and  applied different ways to do this.  Monsters, for example, he stocked through a random “Protection Point: system.  Gold he rolled dice for and items he created random tables for.  The best early example is his The Loch Gloomen stocking list from 1972, reprinted in his First Fantasy Campaign booklet.
History and Writers (Frontier Partisans): H. Rider Haggard, an Englishman who had worked for several years in Natal in southern Africa, created one of the the quintessential Frontier Partisan heroes of fiction — white hunter and adventurer Allan Quatermain, hero of King Solomon’s Mines and a whole series of what Deuce Richardson calls “exotic adventure fiction.”  A hunter of wild game and hidden treasures; a “Man Who Knows Indians” (or, rather, African tribesmen); an English gentleman by heritage and termperament, yet one who sought out the wild places of the earth to wander.
Fiction (NC Register): The unmistakable features of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle looked down upon me from an impressive Victorian town house. Below a larger than life portrait there was a sign; it announced: “The Sir Arthur Conan Doyle Centre.” I made a mental note, intending to visit what I assumed was a place dedicated to the memory and literary legacy of the creator of one of literature’s most famous figures: Sherlock Holmes. It was then that I noticed another sign. It offered “services” and other activities: the building was a center for spiritualism — necromancy by another name.
D&D (Jeffro’s Space Gaming Blog): I just had no interest in running a game featuring kobolds and goblins like happens so often when you run Keep on the Borderlands by the book. But you know, with three healing spells at first level for each cleric, high powered rangers and paladins holding things down, and with enough money in the game that the fighting-men can afford plate armor now… hoo boy, they can hold their own up against some pretty tough opposition. Tougher opposition means bigger payoffs– a tradeoff that seems quite satisfactory, at least when the players are winning.
New Release (Amazon): A resurrected sorcerer grants the wishes of the desperate men who have returned him to life—but in ways none of them anticipates. A prince makes a bargain with a barbarian criminal to travel into a lost world of violence and sorcery to save the life of a woman who may already be dead. Marauders who attack a city devoted to a great goddess suffer her strange curse when she answers the pleas of her dying priestess. The last survivors of an ancient continent confront evil at every step as they march beneath skies of endless darkness to reach the haven they hope will lead them to safety.
Art (DMR Books): “Legacy Circle members of the Robert E. Howard Foundation have something to look forward to: The Challenge from Beyond Drafts. In 1935, fan publisher and future DC Comics editor Julius Schwartz wanted to celebrate the third anniversary of his Fantasy Magazine. He asked five prominent science fiction authors and five prominent fantasy authors to collaborate on two stories, both to be titled ‘The Challenge from Beyond.’
Louis L’Amour (Paperback Warrior): Deemed “America’s Favorite Frontier Writer”, Louis L’Amour’s chronicle of the fictional Sackett family was a bestselling series. Beginning in 1960, the 17-book series is still held in high regard with fans of the western genre. While Barnabas’ son Jubal is mentioned in these books, it is explained to readers that he was a loner and distanced himself from his family. Jubal was obsessed with exploring the far west and walking “where no white-man had ever wandered”.
Fiction (Fantasy Literature): Of the nine books that I have read over the last year or so from Armchair Fiction’s current Lost World/Lost Race series, which runs to 24 volumes, no fewer than three of them have involved the discoveries of hitherto unknown civilizations far beneath the Earth’s surface. In Rex Stout’s truly thrilling Under the Andes (1914), three unfortunate Americans go through a hellacious experience at the hands of a lost race of Incas beneath the mountains of Peru. In S. P. Meek’s The Drums of Tapajos (1930), a quartet of American adventurers discovers the descendants of both the 10 Lost Tribes and Atlantis, uneasily coexisting both inside and beneath a mountain in the Brazilian wilderness.
Heinlein (Pulp Net): As a young science-fiction fan, I read several authors, and would often gravitate to a particular author at a time, reading almost everything they did, before I moved on. Often I wouldn’t follow on their later works. One of these authors was Robert A. Heinlein (1907-88), one of the “grandmasters” of science fiction, and sometimes referred to as the “dean of science fiction.” Like many SF authors of the time, he got his start in the pulps, and was successful in leaving the “pulp ghetto” for better-paying markets, such as The Saturday Evening Post, and original books.
