“I mean… I still kinda regret doin’ this anyway, to a degree. But as a shark, ye typically go after the slowest seal— often the weak or injured, or inexperienced. I don’t actively hunt nowadays but this happened when I was just a teenager—”

“When I finally caught up to the sea lion, I immediately realized something was… very wrong about them. They were still a pup but exhausted compared to others of their age. They seemed to have trouble breathing, and couldn’t keep their head above the water. In fact, they were already choking on water when I got close.

“I had heard about this sort of thing taking a toll on sea lion pups, with most of ‘em dyin’ of starvation, or choking to death. Some sort of disease in the brain that causes it and can kill over half a colony’s pups in one season.

“I watched the sea lion struggle to breathe, but harsh, raspy noises came out instead. I couldn’t bear to see ‘em like that.

“So I made it quick. And hopefully as painless as possible.”

Hey bruce, did you know human scientists discovered a omnivorous shark called a bonnethead shark? Who knows, if you ever meet one you can get some diet advice

“Aye! I’ve ‘eard of ‘em on the East-side of the Pacific! Quite an amazin’ thing to actually find a shark that could potentially live an almost fish-free lifestyle (save for crustaceans)!

“Unfortunately, other sharks like us great whites don’t get the same sorta energy from sea grass as bonnetheads do. They can digest sea grass easily; great whites… not so much. We don’t get any benefits from plants, makin’ complete herbivory near impossible for someone like me… much to my own chagrin.”

Do you think it's wrong to eat other fish, or just not for you?

“I think it’s the best way to change the image of sharks. Sharks have a reputation of bein’ mindless eatin’ machines and eatin’ every fish they meet. A good way to stop this image is to not eat every fish ye meet! Not to mention that plenty of fish turn out to be the best kinds of friends.”

“Durin’ my younger years as a teenager, I almost lost faith that I would ever have a friend. I tried to embrace the fact that maybe I was just never meant to have friends and that befriendin’ prey was a waste of time.

“As much as I hate to say it, I became somethin’ of a terror back then. I tried not to feel. Tried not to feel any guilt as I chewed through schools of fish or families of seals. I tried to push my true self into the back of my mind. I thought that maybe if I didn’t feel anythin’, it was better than feelin’ lonely. That maybe I ought’a be the monster everyone said I was.

“It didn’t last. After some years, I broke down durin’ a hunt and I stopped tryin’ to deny my own nature. Befriendin’ prey was my nature. Feelin’ sympathy for them— seein’ how similar we are— that was what made me different. And maybe that was a good thing.

Bruce’s claws are webbed, with three fingers per foot. At the ends of each finger is an eight to ten-inch long talon, which more closer resembles osprey talons than reptile claws. They curve inward like meathooks; designed to easily pierce through flesh like a hot knife through butter.

The bottom of Bruce’s claws have callouses— a bit more than others of his kind— due to how frequently he ventures into the shore and inland, curious about the world beyond the ocean. His claws are heavy and muscular like a grizzly bear’s claws and carry enough power to deliver the same potential injury— even though Bruce would much rather flee or talk his way out than fight. And hold a— usually tinier— friend gently in his claws than tear flesh apart.

"You are giant, man!! That's so epic!!" you have acquired feral son boy

It wasn't really everyday that a stranger-- much less, a stranger smaller than himself-- approached Bruce without any sense of fear towards the towering sea beast. And the rarity of it all would have nearly caught Bruce off guard, had it not amused him so.

Bruce's classic chainsaw smile spread wide across his scarred lips-- if the stranger had any second thoughts, such a toothy grin would have likely caused them to resurface. If they had second thoughts, of course. A deep, rumbling laugh-- albeit blood-chilling to anyone who didn't know Bruce any better-- bellowed from the Cetus.

"Well, hello, lil' bite! And who might you be, eh?"

Definitely Marlin. Bruce admires Marlin both for his unwavering dedication as a father, but the lengths to which the clownfish would go to keep Nemo safe. 

Even in the movie, Bruce is immediately brought to tears at not only the thought of the little child be frightened and alone, but also the pure unconditional parental love Marlin has for Nemo— something Bruce never experienced from his own father.

Have you had much interaction with humans? I know they can be skittish about sharks.

He could only blink, baffled. “Why should they be skittish ‘round us? It isn’t sharks who fin humans and fish ‘em just for the hell of it,” Bruce said, his tone a mixture of fear and bitterness. “Gotta mighty fine scar on my belly from a run-with a fishermen when I was just a pup.”

Bruce paused a moment before giving a sigh. “But I mostly just ‘ave problems with finners and fishermen. Divers and tourists’re nosy and loud but… often that’s just the worse they are, thankfully.”

20. I wouldn’t quite ship Bruce and Destiny together just on the basis that they’re both sharks. If there’s chemistry written between them sure, but beyond that, it seems shallow— with that same logic, why not ship Chum or Anchor with Bruce (why not)? At least canonically, one can see how they interacted with him.

21. For better or worse, Bruce isn’t popular enough to have a designated ship in the fandom, to my knowledge. Which kinda works to my benefit so I can approach potential ships with a ‘clean slate’, and no outside pressure, so to speak.
