Horror Genius: Ari Aster
November 12th, 2023 (Blog #5)
One of the modern horror geniuses, Ari Aster had an incredible breakout in 2011. He had previously released other short films, but this one, The Strange Thing About the Johnsons (2011), went viral. No one knew his name, but everyone was talking about this, for lack of a better word, insane family drama. There isn’t much you can say about it without spoiling it, so I’ll leave it at that (but you should absolutely watch it, its on YouTube and its only 29 minutes long). So, even though the public didn’t really know who he was after this, people knew about what he had created. This film was actually his thesis project for graduate school at AFI Conservatory, and he went on to make a few more before his feature length debut in 2018 with Hereditary.
Saying that Hereditary was a massive success would be an understatement. This film, aside from thrusting Aster into the mainstream, was extremely monetarily successful (it was actually the highest worldwide grossing film ever released by A24 in 2018 until it was replaced in 2022 by Everything Everywhere All At Once), and it became a horror staple almost overnight. For many horror enthusiasts, Hereditary was like a breath of fresh air. Many (including myself) consider it to be a work of genius: rather than the cheap jump scares that modern horror is known for, this is a slow, deep, dark film with horrifying visuals and a traumatizing backstory. It makes you question the intentions of those around you, and leaves you feeling anxious after every viewing. It is filled with the tiniest details that relay a story with years upon years of careful planning. It is, even now, Aster’s magnum opus (to me).
The most popular of his works, though, is probably Midsommar (2019). He had his entire life to plan out Hereditary, a film instantly loved by horror enthusiasts everywhere, so following up with another incredible horror film only one year later was no easy feat. This one also proved to be a slow burn horror, but Aster decided to flip the expectations of horror viewers even more than he had with Hereditary: this one was bright. Can you name a single other horror movie where nearly all of the scares occur in broad daylight, in an open space? It is truly incredible that he could take a beautiful, bright, open field and make it the setting for unearthly horrors. Though Midsommar is not a perfect 5 stars to me, it is still an incredible work of art that deserves to be seen (multiple times at that). Hereditary is still the better movie in my opinion, but I feel that Midsommar is more impressive for what it accomplished.
This year, Aster released another long-awaited feature length film, Beau is Afraid. Aster had actually been formulating this work since his short film days with The Strange Thing About the Johnsons. He released a short simply titled Beau in 2011 which ended up being adapted into a sequence in the feature film. This film, which has been described by Aster as the “Jewish Lord of the Rings”, follows the title character, a shy man with anxiety issues, through a day in his life (and a visit with his mother). It is more of an anxiety-inducing dark comedy than a horror, but it is terrifying enough that I believe it fits as a horror in Aster’s trilogy so far. This is probably my least favorite of his films so far, but it is quite literally nightmare fuel, and deserves your attention!
Ari Aster has been creating films for over a decade now, and I cannot wait for him to release more. Everything he releases has this inherent sense of anxiety that sticks with the viewer long after their viewing. I don’t think a single movie of the 2010’s affected me to the extent that Hereditary did, and Midsommar is right behind it. His films are genuine works of art, and I hope he keeps getting the funding to create the same insane projects he has been making with A24 for years to come.

The Best Film Schools in the US
Tumblr media
If you want to work in the film industry, there are over 300 four-year colleges and institutions in the United States that offer degrees in film. Since no school is the same, and different schools have their strengths, the ideal option for an emerging filmmaker is to be somewhat different from the finest schools for filmmaking or animations.
The colleges below all have strong cinematic arts programs, as well as extremely successful graduates and a brilliant faculty. Their facilities have followed up with the industry’s rapid technological changes, and the institutions have the valuable network to aid their students to achieve success after college. Many of the top institutions are in or around Los Angeles and New York City, which are two of the country’s most active film and television hubs.
California Institute of the Arts CalArts was founded by Walt Disney and has a longstanding commitment to excellence in animation. Brenda Chapman, who co-directed Brave, Adrian Molina, who won an Oscar for co-directing Coco, and Tim Burton, the well-known writer, director, producer, and artist, are all alumni of the Institution. The REDCAT, Roy, and Edna Disney CalArts Theater, and Walt Disney Concert Hall are all situated on campus.
CalArts has six schools that provide bachelor’s and master’s degree programs in Art, Critical Studies, Dance, Film/Video, Music, and Theater. Students can choose from over 70-degree programs, including scene design, technical directing, and character animation.
American Film Institute The American Film Institute Conservatory, or AFI, is consistently ranked at the top of the country’s film schools. The institution offers MFA programs in cinematography, directing, editing, producing, production design, and screenwriting and is located just above Hollywood in Los Angeles. Students collaborate in groups to develop, produce, create, direct, film and edit a variety of films during the two-year curriculum. The application procedure is extremely tough, and a substantial portfolio of creative work is expected for you to be accepted.
The AFI Awards, AFI Fest, and other arts festivals are held on the dynamic campus.
New York University New York University, located in Greenwich Village, Manhattan, is perfect for students passionate about the arts. The Village is home to a wide range of theaters and performing spaces, in addition to great campus facilities. The Tisch School of the Arts at New York University often ranks among the top five film schools in the country. Billy Crystal, Vince Gilligan, and Martin Scorsese are just a few of the well-known figures on the alumni list, which also includes a long list of famous directors, producers, and creators. Spike Lee earned his MFA from Tisch School of the Arts, where he is now a university professor.
Hundreds of students graduate each year from the undergraduate Film and Television program, and the uni’s commitment to “learning by doing” is much more than a tagline as its students, staff, and instructors generate more than 5,000 films yearly.
Columbia University Columbia University, a private university in New York, is a member of the elite Ivy League. Columbia has a diverse set of strengths and is considered one of the best colleges in the country. Its School of the Arts regularly ranks among the top ten film schools in the country. MFA degrees in Film, Theater, Visual Arts, and Writing, and an MA in Film and Media Studies, and an interdisciplinary degree in Sound Art, are all offered at the institution. Columbia’s location on Manhattan’s Upper West Side will appeal to those seeking a cosmopolitan college experience.

DOUGLAS FLYING SELF PORTRAIT, 1975
Douglas KIRKLAND
Douglas flying self portrait, 1975
Original photography
Pigment print on archival paper
Signed, numbered and titled on the back by the artist
50,8 x 61 cm / 20 x 24 inch, edition of 24
Douglas KIRKLAND was born in 1934 in Toronto. Child, he has been amazed by Photography and his kith and kin became his very first models. Douglas KIRKLAND still does not know that during the next years, the most prominent Hollywood celebrities will pose in front of his camera.
In the early stages of his career Douglas KIRKLAND worked in a small photo studio, in Richmond (Virginia). Thanks to his meetings, he discovered the photographs of Irving PENN. That was a revelation. Douglas KIRKLAND was fond of it, he sent several letters to the famous photographer and succeeded in becoming Irving PENN’s assistant. He is a quick learner but the meager salary was not enough and Irving PENN refused to increase his wage. We were in 1957, Douglas gave himself one year to carve out a place as photographer by his own mean. The road had been a bit longer. He constructed his portfolio step by step through collaborations with small publications. Then, Douglas KIRKLAND started to work with LOOK magazine. The same year, he learnt French in the contact of Coco CHANEL and, just before that, in June 1961, he was appointed to portrait Elizabeth TAYLOR.
Elizabeth TAYLOR had accepted an interview for LOOK, not a photo shoot. The young Douglas KIRKLAND explained her, what would the opportunity to have a photo session with her represent for him. Elizabeth TAYLOR gave her agreement and, thanks to that, launched Douglas KIRKLAND’s career. In this same 1961 year, Douglas KIRKLAND photographed Marilyn MONROE. The session happened around a king size bed, a bottle of champagne and a Frank SINATRA’s record. The beautiful pictures of Marilyn MONROE, with splendid pastel tones, let have a glimpse of the good vibes between both of them. “She was not like the Marilyn I expected, she was easy and light, and almost playful, and very disarming for me” explained Douglas KIRKLAND in an interview for CBS.
Douglas KIRKLAND became the photographer of the celebrities
Charlie CHAPLIN, Audrey HEPBURN, Jack NICHOLSON, John TRAVOLTA, Michael JACKSON, Brigitte BARDOT, Andy WARHOL or Marilyn MONROE are among the numerous personalities he portrayed. While photographing actors and film directors in the intimacy of the studio, Douglas KIRKLAND has also done film set photography including 2001: A Space Odyssey, Sophie's Choice, Out of Africa, Butch Cassidy and the Kid, Romancing the Stone, Titanic, The Great Gatsby and Moulin Rouge. Thus, Douglas KIRKLAND’s photo archives reflect the different sides of the world of cinema.
Of course portraits have a special place in Douglas KIRKLAND’s photos, but he also worked on various subjects such as Astronomy in Chile, The Trans Siberian Railroad or fashion in Bali. Douglas KIRKLAND has taught at the Smithsonian Institution, the AFI Conservatory in Hawaii and Los Angeles, the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena and the Kodak centers Hong Kong, Singapore and Taiwan. His career has been worth him a wide recognition. He kept on photographing the world of film and to conduct his own projects, like a work on his archives to publish a new book, on his black and white photos, called “When We Were Young”.
