The battleground of Uttar Pradesh's Lok Sabha elections is heating up, with major players like the BJP-led NDA and the Samajwadi Party-Congress INDIA bloc gearing up for a fierce contest. However, amidst the political juggernauts, the emergence of a new 'front' comprising smaller parties, including AIMIM and Apna Dal (K), has the potential to reshape the state's political landscape.
This newly formed alliance, named the 'PDM Nyay Morcha', aims to represent the marginalized sections of society, posing a direct challenge to the SP's PDA (Pichchde, Dalit, Alpsankhyak) pitch. Led by AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi and Apna Dal (K) leader Pallavi Patel, the alliance aims to capitalize on the sentiments of the Muslim-Yadav vote bank, traditionally aligned with the SP.

Citizenship Act CAA Unconstitutional? 237 Petitions Before Top Court Today
Amid the row over the Centre's move to implement the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) weeks before Lok Sabha election, the Supreme Court will hear today a batch of 237 petitions challenging the law. A bench led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and comprising Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Misra will hear the matter.
Among the petitioners are Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), a political party primarily based in Kerala, and Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), Congress leader Jairam Ramesh, Trinamool leader Mahua Moitra and AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi.
The day after the Centre notified CAA rules, the two organisations approached the Supreme Court, seeking a pause on the implementation of the law. They termed CAA "discriminatory" against the Muslim community.
Back in 2019, when the Citizenship Amendment Bill cleared the Parliament, multiple petitions had been filed against it. But the court had not paused its implementation because the rules had not been notified. On Friday, Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal told the court that there was no question of a pause back then since the rules were not notified. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta then said that the fact that the rules were notified before the elections was irrelevant.
Under this law, non-Muslim migrants from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan fleeing religious persecution can seek Indian citizenship. Persons from Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi or Christian communities from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh, who entered India on or before December 31, 2014, are eligible to seek citizenship under CAA.
The Opposition has slammed the Narendra Modi government over the timing of the law's implementation - four years after it cleared the Parliament. The move is "evidently designed to polarise the elections, especially in West Bengal and Assam", party leader Jairam Ramesh has said.
Trinamool Congress chief and Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has said she doubts the legality of CAA and alleged a conspiracy to "snatch citizenship rights". "BJP leaders say CAA gives you rights. But the moment you apply for citizenship, you become illegal migrants and you will lose your rights. You will lose rights and be taken to detention camps. Please think before you apply," she said.
The Centre has trashed the Opposition's allegations. Stressing that the CAA is not "unconstitutional", Home Minister Amit Shah has accused the Opposition of resorting to the "politics of lies". On the timing of the law's implementation, he said, "BJP made it clear in its 2019 manifesto that it will bring CAA and provide Indian citizenship to refugees (from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan). BJP has a clear agenda and under that promise, the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill was passed in both houses of Parliament in 2019. It got delayed due to Covid."
He has also said that minorities of the country "need not be afraid because CAA has no provision to take back the rights of any citizen".

Following the issuance of this notification, it signifies a pivotal moment for individuals belonging to the Non-Muslim communities from Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh, which are neighboring countries of India. These individuals, compelled by religious persecution, sought refuge in India prior to December 31, 2014. Through this notification, the Indian government has made a decisive move, extending the promise of citizenship to these migrants. This announcement represents a significant gesture of inclusivity and compassion, acknowledging the plight of those who have faced persecution based on their religious beliefs. It marks a step towards ensuring that those who have sought sanctuary in India find not just refuge but also a sense of belonging and security within the nation's borders.
The rules have been significantly relaxed such as lesser documentation, an online portal, and lower residency requirements! This Act would remove the legal barriers to citizenship while giving a dignified life to these refugees!!
However, not everyone is happy.
- Congress has slammed the government’s timing on the matter while calling it BJP’s attempt at ‘divisive politics’ and ‘designed to polarise the elections’.
- West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee has announced that the TMC will be opposing the Act since it ‘infringes upon people’s rights’!
- AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi claimed that CAA was divisive, ‘based on Godse’s thought’, and ‘wanted to reduce Muslims to second-class citizens’!!
- Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan has announced that the Act would not be implemented in Kerala!!

Exit Polls analysis
The just concluded State Assembly Elections to Chattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Mizoram, Rajasthan, and Telangana have thrown a confusing trend for analysts. Most of the exit pollsters are a confused lot along with most television channels. Tomorrow, 3rd December 2023 will tell how accurate these agencies & TV chanels who conducted the exit polls.
About 2 to 3 months back, no one expected BJP to make any kind of come back to power in Chattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh. Rajasthan was the only state, where BJP have a definite edge because they decided not to project former CM Vasundhara Raje as the Chief Ministerial candidate because of which they lost the 2018 elections to the state assembly.
On 30th November, 2023 Telangana went to polls, and which was the day when Exit poll results allowed. All the exit pollsters looked a confused lot. Their estimates clearly tell that they are not telling the truth or they are confused. Most of them put out a wide range for BJP and INC, two main contenders for power.
Chattisgarh is a closely contested election with INC having a decisive edge about a month back. As the second phase of the elections started, BJP seems to have caught up with them and now the final numbers will be so close that it is a close call for both parties. BJP will win around 39 seats (+/- 3) and INC 47 seats (+/_ 5).
In Madhya Pradesh, BJP initially was lagging behind. Once the election bugle was sounded Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan took the opposition party, INC head on and now they seem to be in the driver's seat. Here too the election is very closely contested. The final tally for BJP is around 120-126 seats and INC 97-103. The possibility of BJP ending with a higher tally is extremely high.
In Rajasthan, BJP will win 120 or more. Voters have decided to teach INC a lesson of their lifetime. INC may end up with 65-70 seats. Here BJP is getting a clear mandate.
Telangana BRS holds the key as they are in power and have a key ally in AIMIM who will not ditch them. INC has made big inroads into BRS's muslim vote bank. That is a worrying factor for AIMIM who has no influence outside Hyderabad. AIMIM will remain a 3% vote share party, not beyond it. BJP is a minor player who increased its vote share to 14% from 2018's 7%. This should worry BRS. If BRS wins 50-55 seats, then they have to reach out to BJP apart from AIMIM who is their traditional ally since the formation of Telangana state in 2013. Wondering how BJP & AIMIM will be part of the same alliance? Will AIMIM walk out of the alliance with BRS? Anything can happen.
In MP and Rajasthan, exit pollsters gave a wide range of 20-30 seats. That means either they are confused or they did not do their work diligently. In Mizoram, they have projected a 6 seats range for the local party in an assembly of 40 seats. That is ridiculous.
BJP will win Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. In Rajasthan, they will win hands down, and in Madhya Pradesh, it is a closely contested fight with BJP having a big edge now. Chattisgarh turned into a nail-biting contest; it can go either way. Telangana is also a closely contested election with BRS losing a lot but staking claim to power with the support of other two parties - AIMIM & BJP. INC gained a lot in this election, bringing them close to power in the state after 10 long years.
