Series finale: Work in Progress (created by Abby McEnany, Tim Mason, 2019-2021)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I keep hearing about and, what's worse, experiencing the sophomore slump syndrome of the TV shows I like (Russian Doll, most recently). Fortunately, it's not the case of this series, which, while getting less exciting, developed in a plausible way. Abby's emotional and mental-health growth is empathetic and relatable, leading to the last episode's closure that brings back season 1's key character, whose absence bothered me though it is likely the best creative decision of its follow-up. It's a pity there's going to be no more.

That’s not what I was implying at all, I was worried that the shoe was equating trans men to women by putting them as viable romantic options for lesbians in a show? Why did you assume my ask was aggressive
hi apologies, it's hard to read tone when ppl are on anon and i get a lot of aggressive messages. thanks for clarifying your question though! i can say that the show definitely doesn't equate trans men with women/femmes. It's made clear that chris (the trans character) goes by him/they and is not framed as a woman in any way. again, this show isn't trying to represent a universal lesbian experience. it's a semi-autobiographical character exploration by Abby McEnany of her experiences so it's not a show purporting to be representing lesbians as a whole group in the same way that Rocketman (2018) is about Elton John's life as a gay man, not about gay men in general. but yeah, anyways. again, sorry i misread before ❤️

Was Justin Hartley nervous about the launch of his new drama series, Tracker, which had the honor of premiering in this year’s coveted post–Super Bowl timeslot? According to the actor formerly known as Kevin Pearson on NBC‘s This Is Us, not until the intense 49ers–Chiefs game went into overtime. “I was like, ‘Oh, so we’re asking people to tune in [to our show] at 11:15 pm?’” he says.
Thanks to what Hartley calls “the power of the Super Bowl, the power of Taylor Swift, the power of the NFL and a really great game,” those worries were short-lived, as 18.4 million live viewers stayed up for Tracker’s premiere (with multiplatform numbers, that audience has climbed to more than 33 million). Beyond that solid debut, episodes in the drama’s regular timeslot averaged a strong 7.2 million live viewers.
“All of that is a testament to how good of a show we’re putting out, and it’s just getting better,” the actor, who is also an executive producer, proudly tells TV Guide Magazine while shooting in Vancouver. “Sometimes the entertainment factor of what we do gets lost when you pay attention to numbers. The ratings for me at this point show we are entertaining a large group of people, which I love, and that’s why we’re doing it.”

Fiona Rene as Reenie Greene in Tracker Season 1 (Michael Courtney/CBS)
On the surface, Tracker—which is based on Jeffery Deaver’s bestselling novel The Never Game—resembles many of CBS’s successful procedurals, with the format of noble heroes solving mysteries and saving lives. In this case, it’s a singular savior: stoic professional tracker Colter Shaw (Hartley), who travels across the U.S. collecting cash rewards while helping citizens locate missing persons. But the familiar case-of-the-week element is where the similarities to shows like NCIS or FBI end.
“I remember the initial pitch to the studio,” says executive producer-director Ken Olin, who worked with Hartley on This Is Us and brought him Deaver’s book as their next project. “Colter’s not encumbered by the same restrictions that all these procedurals have, where there’s a base they live out of and they have to adhere to the law.” Instead, the independent contractor is his own boss, traveling to cities like St. Louis and Chicago in an Airstream trailer.
“There’s a throwback element, like The Rockford Files, with this guy going into a new world” weekly, says executive producer Elwood Reid. (Olin cites Then Came Bronsonand The Fugitive as series in the same vein of Tracker.) “This was more of a character redress of a procedural because so much of it comes from this character, what he does and the cases he takes.” Reid adds that Colter “is not a cop doing a job. He’s this guy doing this thing for his own personal reasons.”
While Hartley says Colter is “all heart” when on the job, he keeps an emotional distance. That’s in part due to his painful family drama, which viewers got a taste of in the pilot episode: Colter’s tracker-teaching father, Ashton (Lee Tergesen), ended up dead from a cliff fall—with Colter’s older brother, Russell (Matthew Nelson-Mahood), seemingly responsible. The mystery surrounding that event begins to accelerate with the May 5 episode and continues through the May 19 season finale, shaking up the recluse.

Michael Courtney / CBS
“Colter finds out some stuff that does rattle him,” teases Hartley, careful not to reveal too much. “If it happened to me, I wouldn’t be able to sleep thinking that certain people in my life lied to me or misled me intentionally. It changes his family dynamic quite a bit.”
As his past disrupts his present, there’s opportunity for the lone wolf to lean on the team who remotely help him on cases, like brainy Chicago-based techie Bobby Exley (Eric Graise) and caring married couple Teddi (Robin Weigert) and Velma (Abby McEnany), who field Colter’s assignments and provide vital intel from Denver. Then there’s brash traveling lawyer Reenie Greene (Fiona Rene), who shares a slowly simmering spark with Colter. In the April 28 episode, Reenie has a personal connection to his missing-children case in Oregon and comes in to help. “They spend a lot of that episode together, not romantically, but you see there is a relationship,” says Reid, adding, “It’s the biggest story we’ve ever done.”
WithTracker already renewed for Season 2, Hartley is “excited about the endless possibilities and the characters that we can bring in.” Could that include another appearance from wife Sofia Pernas, who played fellow reward seeker and rival Billie Matalon in Episode 6? Leave it to TV’s newest detective: “I know a guy, if we can get her!”

I was tagged by @lincolnplumbob to participate in the Fiction Depiction Challenge…thank you very much! This was a no-brainer for me because for quite some time now I have been obsessed with Abby McEnany, writer and star of the comedy Work in Progress who describes herself as a ‘40-something-year-old self-identified fat, queer dyke with depression and OCD’. And In case you’re wondering, the boxes in the screenshots above have a special significance in the show because they contain Abby’s journals, in which she has to meticulously record her life in case she forgets anything she’s ever done. This challenge was such an awesome excuse for me to recreate Abby and to have her in my game, thank you again @lincolnplumbob! Abby’s outfit is by @tripstaysnoided here.
I would like to tag @windermeresimblr @beeleyyt @shhhushhh @gaiahypothesims @igglemouse @bunnybananasims and @ratztom. Cheers, dears!

How well does work in progress handle the relationship between a trans man and a ‘lesbian’….
Hi. I've not watched it all the way through yet so I can't speak for the show personally, but it's worth noting that it was co-created by, co-written by and stars iconic butch lesbian Abby McEnany, and is inspired by her own real relationship with her ex-partner who is trans-masc. The show was produced and consulted on by trans people including non-binary actor Theo Germaine and trans director Lily Wachowski. Again I've yet to finish the show, and I'm not a lesbian. However, your question implies that famous butch lesbian Abby McEnany making an honest show about her experiences as a butch lesbian is somehow not valid lesbian rep because of her relationship with a trans person? That comes off as kinda...... Yikes 😬

ET is exclusively in Vancouver on the set of the new CBS drama, which premieres right after Super Bowl LVIII.
Justin Hartley reveals his chiseled body less than five minutes into his new CBS drama, Tracker. No complaints here. But inquiring minds want to know if the 47-year-old actor -- known for his heart-melting piercing eyes as much as he is for his washboard abs and Adonis-like physique -- planned it that way.
The short answer? No. But such is the life of Colter Shaw (Hartley), a lone-wolf survivalist who roams the country and has a knack for tracking down targets in an effort to help both private citizens and law enforcement solve all manner of mysteries while contending with his own fractured family.
Hartley's not just the star of this new CBS drama. He's also an executive producer, and ET's Deidre Behar spoke with Hartley in Vancouver on the set of Tracker to find out, among other things, if offering a shirtless scene so quickly into the pilot episode -- 4 minutes, 52 seconds, to be exact -- was merely another tease to draw in the viewer and keep them glued to the tube.
"Well, being executive producer, I get to delay that," Hartley quipped. "They wanted it at 4.3 seconds. And so, I was able to eke out another four and a half minutes. I guess that's how powerful I am."
Here being the Airstream Hartley's character travels and lives in to hunt down his targets. The new series, slated to premiere immediately following Super Bowl LVIII, is based on the best-selling Jeffery Deaver novel The Never Game, and it also stars Robin Weigert, Abby McEnany, Eric Graise, Fiona Rene and Mary McDonnell.
Tracker marks Hartley's return to TV as a series regular after starring as Kevin Pearson on the NBC drama This Is Us for six seasons, which aired its last episode in January 2022. After wrapping This Is Us, Hartley and his wife, Sofia Pernas, made a guest star appearance on Quantum Leap.
That the series will premiere immediately after the Super Bowl signals CBS' strong faith in the show becoming a major hit. And that this is Hartley's next major project following the monumental success of This Is Us could also mean Hartley's banking on the same thing. But as of right now, Hartley's not putting a time limit on how long he sees himself playing Colter Shaw.
"I'm having a blast right now because the show is so interesting. It's gripping. It's entertaining. It's thrilling. It's relevant," he tells ET. "And as long as we can do all of that and keep doing all of that then, you know, I don't have a time limit on something like that. I'm having such a good time."
For what it's worth, This Is Us also aired right after the Super Bowl in 2018. The episode was seen by nearly 27 million viewers, before the show went on to become a cultural hit. Speaking of This Is Us, Hartley joked with ET earlier this month about a possible This Is Us reunion on Tracker when he suggested the possibility of a very meta crossover episode.
But in all seriousness, Hartley appears to be coming for his co-star and TV mom, Mandy Moore.
"Mandy, I'm gonna pitch it to you first. I'm not gonna do it here on TV. I'll call you personally because I still have your number," Hartley said. "And I'm gonna pitch it to you and it'll be more than a day ... we're gonna keep you here for a bit."
Whether that pans out remains to be seen, but Hartley says there's at least one This Is Us connection this season, as Jon Huertas (who played Jack's best friend and Rebecca Pearson's second husband, Miguel Rivas) is directing one episode.
"So, that will be my first This Is Us reunion on Tracker," Hartley said.
The series premiere of Tracker airs Feb. 11 right after the Super Bowl on CBS.
