Madcap England Retro Print Suit + Style With a Smile Link Up
You may remember seeing this Madcap England retro print suit before; I featured it in this post in July. On that occasion I teamed it with a white shirt and yellow bag. This time I’ve added more colour with a bright green top and bag. Even though it’s not the same shade of green in the suit’s floral print, I’ve made it work by doubling up with the bag. As I wore this for work I chose trainers…

Skyfall is a good movie. Frankly, all the Daniel Craig bond films leading up to it were good movies. Pivoting from the 06 Casino Royale’s re-contextualization of spies in the post-9/11 geopolitical landscape, Skyfall is about the consequences of the wars we fought before and the mistakes that came back to haunt us following the actions we took in those wars.
Skyfall was released in 2012, 11 years after the twin towers fell and 9 years after the 03 invasion of Iraq. We’d killed Bin Laden and now had to deal with ISIL, who’d not yet bombed the Ariana Grande concert but had at this point grown in power as a result of the US invasion in 03. Setting up the villain of the film (and his horrific disfigurement) as directly the result of MI6 decisionmaking only for him to come back and blow up MI6′s iconic HQ is evidence enough that Skyfall is a retrospective on a decade of war on terror that seems to have done nothing.
There are no better ways to show how tired and old Bond (and the empire he represents) is than to have him fail his fitness tests while in Winston Churchill’s old bunker. A waning icon of a waning empire in the decrepit remains of said empire. It’s a perfect exploration of the intersection of postcolonialism and the war on terror.
Given that the last Daniel Craig film I’d seen before starting Skyfall was Glass Onion, I watched Skyfall with the “I’m so glad that Craig stopped playing Bond so that now he can dress in sweaters in fun movies” criticisms in mind and frankly, I found they fell flat. For one thing, Bond does wear sweaters in this (very fun!) movie (as well as a cute blue adidas tracksuit with matching shoes!), but on top of that I’m starting to realize this criticism of the modern bond franchise (and other films like these) comes from the sort of people who still use the word “grimdark” for their media criticism. Just like those who unironically use “dudebro,” their contributions to serious discussion are limited. Doubly so for Skyfall because this movie is fantastic and balances tone elegantly.
I will admit that Skyfall takes a serious tone when addressing things like “the fall of the 20th century western imperialist old guard” and “thematic explorations of the war on terror and the mistakes of those gambling with the lives of millions” (If you were to try and write those into something finally similar to Trolls 2 it’d be difficult though not impossible) but I will argue that the movie is still self aware enough to understand itself as a pulpy adventure film.
This isn’t Moonraker or anything, but Skyfall is self aware enough to know what beats to hit. The villain monologues and then challenges Bond to a flintlock pistol shooting match. They keep the main bad guy in a dorky sci-fi glass prison cell. The action finale has goons (did I mention that there are goons?) showing up in a helicopter to attack a castle. They even pull the old DB5 out of mothballs so Bond can threaten the ejection seat trick. Bond fights off an evil lizard in a casino at one point. Imagine the movie in 60s Technicolor and the bones of the plot are just as camp as Goldfinger.
The movie is clearly self-aware and plays into the campier story conventions of a genre the franchise it belongs to basically started. It just doesn’t have characters shrug and go “*gulp* he’s behind me isn’t he?” Instead of lampshading the more ridiculous aspects of pulp characters from the 60s and 70s, Skyfall is so darn earnest about how cool these are. It’s self aware yet charming in its seriousness! (Jots down “James Bond Skyfall = Solarpunk?” into margin of notebook and is never heard from again)
Movies like Captain Marvel can’t say the same, and only half of that is because you can’t write a critique of Bush and Obama era imperialism while also shilling for the USAF. It’s because they can’t be serious in their ridiculousness that they end up being less campy (ashamed of truly trying) and less adult (too silly to take seriously) and ultimately less fun than movies like Skyfall.
That’s ultimately what Skyfall is. A Pulpy country-hopping spy flick about modern spies operating in shadows that are getting more cynical with every conflict. It’s not Dr. No but it’s immense fun that explores themes few other franchises are tackling these days. That’s worth a lot more than whatever Ryan Reynolds/The Rock spy film is dealing these days. And Daniel Craig got to wear a dark powder blue tracksuit too.

AWAY DAYS
90's adidas GAZELLE

4. BRAIN DEAD

5. KITH
Kith was established in 2011 by Ronnie Fieg, who aims to give shoppers a unique experience and change the current fashion landscape so that customers receive more than what they pay for. Celebrities like Justin and Hailey Bieber are often seen sporting the brand. Kith is known for its extensive list of collaborations with other brands, which includes Levi's, Adidas, Columbia, Coca-Cola, Tommy Hilfiger, and many more.
Photo A: Justin Bieber was photographed sporting a KITH x Versace hoodie (2018).
Photo B: KITH x Cap'n Crunch (2016).
What these brands have in common is their exclusivity appeal and creative collaborations with other brands. Having limited and exclusive drops creates hype for these brands, which is what we see when brands collab with childhood favorites such as the McDonalds happy meal or Cap'n Crunch cereal. These brands have proven to be major players in the streetwear community. Check back next week to see more streetwear related content!

Subcultures in Bournemouth
Looking for further design inspiration I wanted to look into subcultures within the youth of Bournemouth. Initially I looked at the surfing culture as the pier is one of the best spots here to surf at and is a key part of Bournemouth.
Bournemouth pier has long been a well-known surf spot, "first being surfed early in the 60’s by quite a few ‘radical dudes,’ the whole of the Dorset coast was then explored for new waves (which there were plenty of)."
Whilst many non-locals may not see Bournemouth as a surf spot, the pier offers sheltered along with a consistent break, attracting many local surfers.
Looking at how visual communication has been influenced by surf culture is a good starting point for how I can draw inspiration from this and put it into my own work.
A good point of inspiration is surfer David Carson. "He is the world’s most imitated graphic designer, at least among magazines that do “hip” and “edge” and who like to break every typographic rule there is while straight-jacketing themselves to another set of strictures".
Taking inspiration from surf and the ocean being wild and unexpected "six years ago, Carson designed, at BeachGrit‘s behest, 151 new logos for the WSL.
The existing logo, he said, “has no soul. The logo just doesn’t represent the sport very well. It’s pedestrian, unoriginal, forgettable, safe, gentrified and corporate. All things surfing is NOT, at least to me.”
His creative style is clear in his designs and reflects his views on surfing culture and is something that could provide inspiration for my own designs and the way Bournemouth should be viewed.
Another notable subculture within Bournemouth is the "healthy growing skate scene with multiple cliques made of older OG's and a load of young rippers that can usually be found in any of the relatively okay skateparks surrounding our small seaside town".
"In the early days of skateboarding, skateboarders had to be resourceful and creative. They used DIY techniques to create their own custom boards and designs, which often involved repurposing old skateboards or other materials. This DIY ethos also extended to skateboard graphics, which were often hand-drawn or spray-painted onto the bottom of the boards. These early skateboard graphics were heavily influenced by surf culture, featuring waves, palm trees, and other beach motifs.
As skateboarding gained popularity in the 70s and 80s, it began to influence art movements like punk, street art, and graffiti. Skateboarders and artists began to collaborate, with skateboard companies commissioning artists to create graphics for their boards. The skateboarding industry also began to attract artists who were drawn to its rebellious spirit and DIY aesthetic. Skateboard graphics became more sophisticated, featuring intricate designs and bold colors that reflected the energy and attitude of skateboarding culture."
"One of the most influential skateboard artists of this era was Jim Phillips, who designed graphics for Santa Cruz Skateboards. Phillips' bold and colorful designs featured skeletons, monsters, and other irreverent imagery that became synonymous with the skateboarding subculture. Other prominent skateboard artists of this era included Vernon Courtlandt Johnson, who designed graphics for Powell-Peralta Skateboards, and Pushead, who worked with Zorlac Skateboards."
