digital age has create age has created a standard for fonts, eg comic sans, ariel

its a way of communicating

it keeps us safe through road signs and maps

it helps us make decisions through menus, leaflets etc

typography can convey different messages, eg if its cluttered it will be hard to read etc

Cover art by Laura Michelle. I hope you're doing well in splendid isolation. It's been giving me time to dig deeper into a semi-nostalgic project I've been undertaking: looking back at the recording sessions for Elastic No-No Band's big double-CD, Fustercluck!!! Released a decade ago, but recorded in dozens of sessions from October 2007 to October 2009, Fustercluck!!! was envisioned as a mega-magnum opus that showed the best and strangest aspects of what turned out to be the definitive line-up of our band (Doug Johnson, John Mulcahy, Herb Scher, Preston Spurlock, me), as well as a showcase for me as a performer and songwriter -- as well as a guest-star-loaded tribute to all the kickass people I met in the Anti-Folk scene. A statement. A multi-tiered project. A time capsule. Well, now I'm digging up the time capsule. And a lot of it delights me. And some of it... well... I want to say preemptively that I don't think anyone did bad work on the record (except for me occasionally... but I digress). Any weird feelings I have about songs or performances all stem from that moment in time. In many ways, a record is like an open diary. And some of those diary entries make me cringe, and some just make me sad. As such, it's kind of hard for me to get through Fustercluck!!! And not just 'cause it's a long record. In certain moments, I don't recognize the dude who made it. So, as an exercise, I decided to look at the songs of Fustercluck!!! and see which ones mean the most to me now. And I only picked from the songs I wrote or were written by my friends (even though some of those covers from the record turned out great). Without thinking, I just filled a playlist. I listened to those 25 tracks (out of an original 45), and I liked the experience a lot. It was nostalgic, but it also offered something new. For instance, in my exercise, I put "Oh Magali" right at the start, because I've come to consider it one of the best songs we ever did; originally this song didn't even appear until disc 2. And by doing that, the album kind of came into focus. I realized that, at its core, this silly record is melancholy and romantic -- or more succinctly: horny-sad. Not everything is a horny song or a sad song, but that mood informs everything, I think. And in its new redux -- or "re-fuster-dux," if you will -- I think that comes across even more strongly. So yeah, without expelling too many more words, that's what Decayed: A Re-Fuster-Dux Deluxe is. I'm not going to go all Ozzy Osbourne or George Lucas on these songs, and try to scrub the originals out of existence. But I think this is a better record. I would like you to hear it. It features great performances by the band, as well as some fairweather bandmates and guest stars like Debe Dalton, Toby Goodshank, Brook Pridemore, Ariel Bitran, Thomas Patrick Maguire, Octavio Lafuentes, Chris Andersen, Joe Crow Ryan, Arthur Bea, and Patrick Trejchel. I remixed and re-edited 2 tracks that have stuck in my craw over the years ("Making Out at Work [Don't Work]," "You Make Me Sick"), and as I described in a previous post, I completed an abandoned session outtake for a song I've always liked, "Exception to the Rule." Then I contacted the main producer on the original record, Major Matt Mason USA, and asked him if he thought there was any value in remastering the songs I didn't remix. He thought it was worth a shot, and I'm glad he took the time. "Loudness" is an ongoing issue in digital music, with audio technicians doing their damnedest to make songs pop out of tinier and tinier speakers. On the other hand, Major Matt's new masters are more nuanced and balanced than the originals. You can better hear the interplay between the musicians and the craft that went into the mix. It sounds great. So... please, experience these decade-old songs in a way that feels new and relevant to me -- and hopefully, for you too. I'm not done digging into the Fustercluck!!! vaults. I've got some interesting ephemera that I want to share soon. And I like Major Matt's remasters so much that eventually I might have him remaster the full Fustercluck!!! double-CD. We’ll see.

Entonces, mientras una arena finita y tibia se me escurría sobre los empeines, mientras el mar me mostraba a dieciseis de todos sus verdes y los transformaba en espuma, mientras una mujer de demasiadas bellezas avanzaba altiva por la playa autorizándole sólo al aire que le atrapara las caderas, entonces, definitivamente entonces, admití ante mi propia conciencia, ante mi propia memoria y ante mi propio corazón que llevaba décadas equivocado. Equivocado quiere decir lo que todo el mundo entiende. Equivocado como un delantero que se enceguece y patea al arco cuando, en realidad, las puertas del gol se hubieran abierto si le pasaba la pelota a un compañero, equivocado como un hincha rabioso que persiste en insultar a un jugador que hace rato salió de la cancha, equivocado como un hombre cualquiera que deja correr el tiempo sin advertir que la vida no es más que una aventura fugaz. Equivocado había estado a través de los años al sostener como si fuera una verdad algo que la arena finita y tibia, el mar de los dieciseis verdes y la mujer de demasiadas bellezas me desmoronaban en ese instante y de un mazazo perfecto.
